I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail.  There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software.  I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. I don't have the original operating software disk.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your reply suggests that you have moved Mail to a different location, which (as I said) will prevent it from being properly updated. You cannot use Mail 4.5 with any recent version of Mac OS X. Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) included Mail 5 and Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) includes Mail 6. I'm assuming that you have either Lion or Mountain Lion, but if that is incorrect, you will need to provide that information.
At this point, you will need to reinstall your system. Hold down command-R at startup and reinstall the system right on top of the old one. This should not disturb any of your documents or applications, though you should have backups beforehand in case something goes wrong. And at this point, with your system in an uncertain state (I don't entirely know what you have done to it), something could go wrong.
You will also want to delete the old copy of Mail 4.5, wherever that is. You can't use it.
In the future, do not move any of the preinstalled applications. Leave them where they are.

  • Lion... Seems to be slowing my iMac Down? Tips and Tricks?

Hey everyone, this is my first post so go easy on me
I installed lion as soon as it came out. I'm really impressed so far, loving the new features (except my inverted mouse, that had to be changed pretty sharpish). My only problem is, is that it seems to have slowed my iMac down. I have seen in some posts that spotlight needs to do alot of indexing, but I generally leave my computer on for long periods so it should have finished that by now should it?? I seem to struggle with safari, however im just in the process of re-downloading and installing again.
My iMac is a 24 inch, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. My macbook air doesnt seem to have any problems so any idea why I would be struggling on the iMac??
Any tips, tricks or advise would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Thats what I thought about spotlight. If Im leaving it on for long periods that should of been done and dusted ages ago. I know what u mean about the performance, some times it flies and does what I want, but the more windows I have open on sarfari and it seems like im asking for trouble!
I thought I would be able to re-download safari from here... http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
How ever u can only get 5.1 on the apple site and u need snowleopard for that. So that idea has gone out the window.
Hmmm not sure about the apps. However u can just re-download the ones u have already paid for can't u.
    U had any joy?

  • Trouble with Software Update on my iMac

    Hello Mac Community -
I am trying to run software update on my iMac. Everything seems to be fine, the software update runs, it finds 11 updates. Then, when I hit "install items" a little box pops up asking me to restart the computer. I do so, but when I return to software update, none of the updates have been installed! They are all still listed in the software update box.
I've gone through the motions three or four times, and each time it is the same. It feels a little bit like groundhog day.
Any help would be helpful. I have Mac OS X 10.6.8
    Thanks, Angela

    it finds 11 updates.
Repair permissions and restart your computer.  Install 2-3 updates at a time.  Repair permissions & restart after each installation.
Never install more than 3 updates at a time.  Your system will thank you.

Gray screen could be any number of things, bad third party at boot kext file, a bad Apple one, a bad install/upgrade of OS X, drive corruption etc.

  • Error during software update, slow browsing speed and maximum force quits ?

I have a mac book. Today i was doing software update, it gave me an error "operation could not be completed, connection reset by peer" ? now what does that mean?
I had recently downloaded open office application which i have deleted it. Further my internet browser are so slow that i feel surfing in stone age.
Besides, i have seen my system is getting pretty slow and i have to use force quit as some operation do not respond to the request.
    What to do?

    Hello,
Regarding the error in software update: It just means you lost your internet connection, but it was the fault of something on your side, not Apple's side. Try again later, or better yet, try it somewhere else. Sounds like your internet setup (your router, modem, etc) is having problems.

  • Software Update never pulls anything down, and Network Pane is blank(!)

Hey all. I'm kind of concerned that my software update hasn't pulled anything for a while. When I do it manually, the blue bar moves about 5% of the way and just will hang forever.
I was curious if there was something going on in the Network tab that might be affecting its ability to connect - I'm on the internet with it all the time - but then there was nothing in the Network tab as well!
I dumped the preferences files, and repaired the permissions, but it still won't work. Any other suggestions?

Hi Auto and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
Have you checked the drive for available drive space lately? If not, select your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, press Command + I on your keyboard. That will prompt your Get Info window. Click the General tab so it faces down and look where it says: Capacity and Available. Rule of thumb, never allow the available drive space to fall below 15%, 20% is better.
If that's not the issue, try deleting this file: com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file to the trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
Now, go to System Preferences/Software Update and see if it works.

  • No software update on Intel iMac?

    Hi all,
Just got a new Intel iMac 20" and installed DVD Studio Pro 4 from the original DVD. Wanted to upgrade to 4.0.3 via Software Update but it doesn't show a single update available, not for Compressor, not Pro Runtime etc...
Is this because it's an Intel iMac? Will there be other updates or do I have to wait for a universal binary version? Is DVDSP not officially supported on Intel?

Without actually having an Intel mac to hand I can't be sure - but can you not go to the Apple website and manually download the update?

  • I have just updated software updates for my iMac and I am still not able to get Firefox 4 to be accepted by Snow Leopard - how can this be solved?

It appears that a number of people have had this problem, but I have not found a comprehensive location that will solve the compatibility problem between Snow Leopard and Firefox 4. Does this require the services of a tech to solve?

    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

  • Slow / Sluggish iMac after Software Update

After recently running Software Update on my iMac, every program is now running extremely slow.  My iMac is slow to start-up, and importing files into iTunes and iPhoto seemingly takes forever!  Basically any function that must access the hard drive is now acting very sluggish.
I am using an iMac with a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and 3 GB of RAM (the max for this model).  The versions of software installed are:  OS X 10.6.8, Safari 5.1, iTunes 10.4, and iPhoto '11 ver. 9.1.5.
Is there anything about these recent software updates that could explain why accessing the hard drive is now very slow?  BTW there is no indication that Spotlight is still indexing.

Please detail all you have done to resolve your issue.  Need this information so that the users can avoid the "been there, done that" scenario type responses.  This is to avoid repeating the troubleshooting you may have already tried.  Thank you.
For instance:  Did you repair permissions and restart your computer after updating?

  • Software update on iMac. Trying to update software I get message "an error has occurred. the request has been timed out" how do i know if there are updates?

Am trying to update software through "Software Update" on my iMac (latest Lion operating system).
I keep getting message "An error has occurred. The request timed out"
How do I know if there are software dates available to down load.

Two things, bushmanernie (love the name)
First what version of Lion are you running and have you downloaded any Combo updates since you installed it.
Second; I see you only have 10.6.2 in your profile.   You might like to update it.
I don't have Lion myself but I'm guessing you don't have the very latest version.  You can check what should be available through the opening Apple support page > downloads.

  • Shut down after software update - OSX Lion

Hi all, is there any option in finder to run the software update with automatic shutting down the machine when the update is finished? any special trick?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.8 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
    Cheers!

  • Latest iMac software update is not working

I finally decided to download the latest software update on my imac. I clicked "restart" to install update, and it said it will take about 3 minutes to download. It has now been about 3 hours and my imac is still "processing."  Is there any way to cancel the download, or simply interrupt the processing?

Click, "Pause" ... you can resume the download again anytime.

  • USB tethering stopped working after iMac software update.

Yesterday my Internet was slooooow so I followed a tip to repair disc permissions in disc utility, at the same time I was downloading and installing software update for the iMac. I've always tethered with a USB cord (Bluetooth has NEVER worked with the Mac and phone, but does with the iPad).  All the solutions I find one here for this issue give instructions I don't understand (where/how to do them exactly, like iPhone config utility...where?!), and how I'm supposed to download iTunes again on a mac that has no Internet because i can't tether...physically impossible. Very frustrated.  I don't understand why software updates are issued that cause problems like this, but no immediate solutions updates are issued after. One top of that, how are we supposed to fix issues when we can't tether and dont have separate Internet (I can't update my iPhone software without a special trip to a wifi hotspot....I live in Saudi Arabia...it's not easy to do that).
Sorry, so many questions. Frustrated.  I there a SIMPLE solution out there?!
