Software Updates Very Slow Reporting Compliance

We installed updates over the weekend, through Saturday. It is now Thursday and all of them have not yet reported as compliant even though they are. Slowly more have reported each day and eventually they will all but that may not be until a few more days.
Right now we have a good percentage still showing Last Enforcement Message Time as almost a week ago with Last Enforcement Status of Downloaded update(s). The updates have been downloaded, installed, and followed by a restart. Why are they taking so long?
My statesys.log doesn't show any errors either. What can I do to force them to update their status as we have the default to send state messages every 15 minutes. Please help.

What do you have for SU scan agent setting? The default is every 7 days.

  • Snow Leopard Software Update VERY slow

    I'm running snow leopard 10.6.8 server and am having some very strange problems with my software updates.
    I have all the settings set right (I believe) and I have made the adjustments to allow Lion clients to upgrade from it as well.
    The problem I'm having is that when a client running either 10.6 or 10.7 is in the "checking for updates" portion of the update process it takes a very VERY long time to get the the next screen. The clients running 10.6 will show the bar going across at a snails pace for about 10-15 minutes then give the updates report showing my correct updates server at the top of the window.
    The clients running 10.7 show the blue bar only going about 1/8-1/3 of the way in, then it stops, and sits there literally for hours before completing the check, then giving me the status and it also does show my correct update server.
    I am connected through 1GB Ethernet from my clients to the server so that's not an issues and the speed is good when doing a file transfer. I can transfer 3GB to the server in less than 40 seconds, and pull that same 3GB back to the client in about 30 seconds. I can see and ping the update server. I can access the Xserve web site on my server... and the weird thing is it didn't always do this, it's only been the last month or so.
    I have thought it might be a bad or corrupt OS so I reinstalled the OS and all services.
    The clients are not managed by Microsoft AD & GP not by the apple servers.
    As I said this used to be so much faster then using the apple servers in our organization, but now it's grossly slower then going out to the apple site.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you, Mike

    Asking for the server by IP does mean you're avoiding a DNS lookup.
    It doesn't mean that the target OS X Server box won't avoid errors due to a DNS server or network error, nor that any parallel connections that might be initiated at the client or at the server won't encounter DNS errors or network errors; whatever is going on here, and whatever is triggered by the initial IP-based access.
    One of the DNS translations that can arise - even when the client is specifying an IP address - is on the remote end of the connection, when that system performs what is called a reverse look-up; translating the client IP address to the client IP name.  If there's a reverse translation arising and and if there's a DNS error or DNS timeout or a network error, then things will (still) be slow, even if the initial access was via IP.
    If you're running a NAT'd private network, that means local DNS services are necessary and (at least to start with) no references to DNS servers off your NAT'd LAN.
    If DNS services aren't quite right, the rest of the network stack gets flaky, and DNS errors look like delays, sluggist networks, and network errors.
    There are most certainly other triggers for network slowness ranging from moisture in cables to WiFi interference to a truck that drove through the path of the WISP link, but DNS services are always a good potential culprit until proven otherwise.
    Valid DNS services have become much like IP routing; a fundamental part of a modern IP network.  This particularly as distributed security, certificate-based encryption, user authentication and access delegation become more and more important within the network environment.

  • Safari, mail, software update very slow on new imac

    Hello,
    I recently upgraded to a 21.5" i3 imac and transferred everything from my old imac (core 2 duo, os 10.4.10)
    anything involving the internet is painfully slow, safari 5.02, firefox, mail, even the software update (but once it "catches"- downloads are fast)
    I have tried the following:
    1.) Repaired disk permissions
    2.) Changed DNS
    3.) Reset Safari
    4.) Restarted computer
    5.) Disabled all plugins (only had one which was an adobe reader)
    No improvement- when I hookup my old computer- internet is fast.
    Now for the really disturbing part- when I run windows 7 inside parallels 6, internet explorer is quick!
    Help!

    Finally- the problem has been solved
    on the second call to the cable company they flashed/reset the modem and now it is working perfectly (roadrunner wideband)-
    the first time I called they just ran a diagnostic which appeared ok.
    the second time they flashed to modem.

  • Creative Cloud Software is very slow to open

    When I restart the computer, and then I start any of the Creative Cloud Software is very slow to open.
    If I close the software and I open it again, it starts fastly
    Is there anything I can do to increase the performace of the 1st opening of the creative cloud software after the pc reboot

    First let me disclose that I am not an expert nor even much less. However I used to have this slow as a turtle opening of FF until I got rid of my antivirus software which at the time was Avast. I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials and have had no problems since. FF loads in 3 to 4 seconds!

  • Software Update Server, clients report "no new software available"

    I have been running Software Update Service on my 10.5.8 (9L30) Xserve for a short time without any problems, updating about twenty 10.5.8 clients on the local network.
    Recently the clients started reporting "no new software available" when running software update (GUI or command line), but updates were available on the Xserve:
    # defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://myserve.mydomain:8088/
    # defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://myserve.mydomain:8088/
    # softwareupdate --list
    Software Update Tool
    Copyright 2002-2007 Apple
    No new software available.
    When pointing the clients back to apple for updates, the update is available:
    # defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
    # softwareupdate --list
    Software Update Tool
    Copyright 2002-2007 Apple
    Software Update found the following new or updated software:
    * iTunesX-9.0.1
    iTunes (9.0.1), 87690K [recommended]
    Clients can connect to port 8080 on the server, and the iTunes update has been downloaded to the server and is visible on the file system:

    None of the XML data seen in the Cache.db file after running against Apple's update server is present.
    Note, I did multi-home this server fairly recently to add an internal website on a different IP/URL, but I don't think that should have effected the SUS service, which is still available at the original IP/port. I am a Unix/Linux admin by training, so some of the OS X idiosyncrasies are still new to me, and I may not be aware of certain tools/commands that may be helpful in diagnosing this problem.
    Thanks for your help in advance,
    -Tom

    Apologies for responding to my own post, but I believe I have found the issue and am replying with a solution for the benefit of others.
    Upon reviewing my original post, I noticed that the curl request for the index.sucatalog was returning XML contents with URLs defined with only the hostname, not the FQDN, even though the CatalogURL was specified with a FQDN.
    # curl -s http://myhostname.mydomain:8088/index.sucatalog | grep iTunesX.tar
    <string>http://myhostname:8088/content/downloads/05/47/061-7190/xP7dtwZz6YGXLHFHcxVT7CnV 6mRdq6RnVY/iTunesX.tar</string>
    This change in URL may have arisen when multi-homing my Xserve for some reason. In my case, specifying the search domain field on the clients seems to have fixed the problem as the simple hostname in the URLs are now able to resolve without the domain.

  • Peformance its very slow Report BI 7

    Hi All,
    Very Good Morning.........
    Peformance it's very slow in Bex Report..... how to reactify the problem, please provide solutions ...
    Please provide step-by-step.
    If any possibel Enchancement of the report.
    Advance thanks........
    Bye,
    Vijaay.

    Hi Vijay,
    There is very much you can do about performance in the background (infocube level)
    But, very littile you can do in the front end (query level)
    to increase performance,
    1) create indexes on the cube - creating indexes increase the readspeed of data.
    Infocube manage -> performance tab -> create DB indexes*
    2)Roll up of data to aggregates - If aggregates are build already, you can roll up the data else you can check the option to create aggregates
    Infocube manage -> Rollup tab -> Execute.*
    3)Compression - compression is a technique where you compress all the data in to a single request hence the over head of maintaining mulotiple requests get reduced subsequently increasing the query performance.
    Infocube Manage -> collapse -> execute.
    apart from the above, you also have the option to partition the cube. a little search on cube partition in SDN can give you the details.
    Hope this helps,
    Sri...

  • Photoshop crashes, unable to perform Software Update, general slowness.

    I am writing on behalf of a colleague at work.
    He is using a brand new iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. It is running Mac OS X 10.5.5 and he is trying to update to 10.5.6 to correct some problems he's been encountering.
    He has been experiencing repeated crashes with Adobe Photoshop and Mozilla Firefox, as well as general slowness. The biggest problem happens when trying to perform a Software Update.
    "The installer encountered an unknown error that failed the install. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
    The Mac then freezes and has to be force shut down. After that it sometimes will not start again either.
    We have run a permissions verify and repair, and errors were corrected but the problem continues. We also ran a disk verify and it found errors, but when we tried to correct the errors it said that there were no errors.
    A memory test in the Apple Hardware Test showed no errors either. We are running an hour-long test now.
    We suspect there may be a hardware problem. Could anybody please advise on any other things we could try?

    The computer answered this question for us. Today it will not boot.
    It is going to be serviced, I suspect a logic board problem.

  • Mac with vpn tracker software running very slow

    Hello,
    I leave in Seattle and I use a Mac G5 running vpn tracker software tunneling into a Microsoft corporate network in San Jose, CA. My mac is plugged into a router and it is very very slow. I also have a PC with vpn tracker software which is running wireless and it is fast. Any ideas on what I need to do to make the Mac run faster. Could this be issues with my clients network? Should my Mac G5 be running wireless in order to get it running faster? Any advice would be appreciated.

    I have the same problem. It is really, really slow. Does Windows work better than the Mac in this respect?

    It is a serious problem for slow connection!

    No. Furthermore, the system requirements for Nokia Software Updater state clearly that a fast Internet connection is required. If you don't have a fast Internet connection you can always ask a Nokia Care Point to do the update for you.

    I have the new iphone 4. i'm updating to 4.01 and the progress bar is barely moving. it's 1/20 done and it's been about 45 minutes. why are these updates so slow?

    Because everyone is trying to do the same as you at the same time, thus overloading Apple's servers.

  • Lion's Software Update to slow when connecting to a Snow Leopard Server

    Hello…
    I have some problems with the Lion's Software Update.
    I try to make them by our server (10.6.8). The server's conf has been updated as explain in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4771
    After doing that the server has downloaded all Lion updates.
    When I try to connect with my Lion installed Mac Book Pro, the Software update window appears, but seem to be stuck…
    I've made the test on an Lion installed iMac 27, everything was fine. :/
    Here ars the Software Update service's logs: apparently connection is all right.

    you don't need to import users from SL server to lion if your binding to your SL OD master
    the SL OD master users and groups will show in profile manager
    lion server has to be OD master to use profile manager, you'll end up with 2 masters the SL server
    and lion. unless your planing on migrating the SL server to lion
    what I'm currently using,  lion OD master is bound  the SL OD master with out username and password
    SL server OD master users and groups also appear in WGM on lion server
    sorry I quite don't understand why you'd want to import users from SL into lion
    you'd end up with having to keep to OD's in sync with passwords and users
    which kinda defeats the purpuse of having one point for authentication??
    if you just want to test lion an a separate LAN you could try exporting users and groups computers from SL
    and importing in lion, you'd lose the user passwords
    you could still test lion proile manager without importing users just as you've done
    if you've setup everything correctly and joined the SL OD master from the lion OD master users should appear in WGM and profile manger. in my case I jioned the Lion server to the SL OD master before setting up lion profile manager, OD master etc.

  • IPhone 4 with updated software is Very slow loading, typing etc what is a next step?

    You will not lose any data resetting your phone by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes back again. But it can clear some glitches after installing ne apps or updating the iOS.
    Only if you set up your device again "as new" your phone will be wiped, but if you backed it up, you can use the backup to restore your settings and data from. iPhone and iPod touch: About backups

  • Why are Mobile phone software updates so slow Telstra?

    Looking at all this crowd support info, I seem to find quite a bit asking about device updates being so much slower than Optus and Vodafone.
    Telstra, why, why are you so slow in releasing updates. Please stop blaming the manufacturer as it's obviously not them, you're just releasing 4.4.2 for the galaxy note 3 and we're up to lollipop 5.2, seriously, you're supposed to be the leader in the telecommunications industry but always seem to be two steps behind.

    Good evening.I'm very sure indeed that Telstra doesn't need me to defend them BUT ..... I did that exact work every day for several years, and I'll answer your question. The various networks have different philosophies on testing and releasing software.It also depends on how thoroughly various networks conduct their testing, and their philosophy of allowing  a  certain degree of software bugs or software issues to be released, and patched later. In relation to Telstra, they are the dominant network operator in Australia, and in fact one of the 5 best operators in the world.   The last thing they need is a product not to fulfill their criteria, with the resultant backlash. When testing is thoroughly done, it is almost inevitable that  some issues will be found,  and that requires negotiation with the manufacturers, and then it's up to the manufacturers to fix those issues and re-release the software. Then the testing is re-done and sometimes it is again not approved by the operators.    That simply takes time.     Different networks have different philosphies as to what is acceptable to release. Also, the same generic software can display issues that often requires customisation to a degree for different networks.I hope this explains the situation to you. It is extremely complex as phones have now become a multitude of devices all in one.

  • JTextArea update VERY slow

    I have a dialog that a JTabbedPane with several tabs on it. One of the tabs contains a JTextArea that I have redirected System.out to. The JTextArea is attached to a JScrollPane and then to the JTabbedPane. The class I created to send System.out to the JTextArea does a JTextArea.append() to display the information in the JTextArea. I am NOT trying to scroll the JScrollPane to keep the last message displayed or anything like that.
    The problem is, when I write a large amount of data (30-50 lines, each line <60 characters) to the JTextArea (with System.out.println()) my application becomes unresponsive and it takes a very long time to display. This is only an issue when I have selected the tab in the JTabbedPane that contains my JTextArea. If I select another tab, writing a large amount of data to System.out has no noticeable affect on my application and it displays very quickly.
    Is there a better way to update the JTextArea than to use JTextArea.append()? The append() method seems to invalidate the entire JTextArea for each line or character that is displayed (even when the text is not actually displayed on the screen) and slows things down a lot.

    I can't really say that it is that exciting but, here it is
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.text.*;
    public class GUIStream extends OutputStream {
         private JTextArea               _area     = new JTextArea();
         private JScrollPane               _pane     = new JScrollPane( _area );
         public GUIStream() {
              _pane.setPreferredSize( new Dimension( 450, 125 ) );
              _area.setEditable( false );
         public JComponent getOutput() {
              return _pane;
         public void write( int b ) {
              String out;
              try {
                   out = Integer.toString( b );
              catch( Exception e ) {
                   return;
              _area.append( out );
              _area.invalidate();
         public void write( byte[] buf ) throws IOException {
              write( buf, 0, buf.length );
         public void write( byte[] buf, int off, int len ) {
              _area.append( new String( buf, off, len ) );
              _area.invalidate();
         public void clear() {
              _area.setText( "" );
    }To redirect System.out, i simply did this:
    System.setOut( new PrintStream( new BufferedOutputStream( new GUIStream() ), false );To add the Component to a dialog, or whatever, use GUIStream.getOutput().

  • VERY slow reporting performance

    We've created reports which, when run directly on Oracle through sqlplus (copying the exact SQL from the report) take around 3 minutes, when run from BO (using Web Intelligence) take hours.
    The SQL outputs around 300,000 rows, which equates to a few hundred pages in the report.  Is there a reason why the report would take so long (the session to Oracle is open the whole time)?  I can understand it not taking just the time for Oracle to execute the query, as WebI then needs to take the results and produce the report, but I wouldn't expect it to take hours.
    So far on our servers we've concentrated on making Oracle perform faster, and now we've got that working better our attention has been drawn to the performance issues of the reporting, and we don't have any experience with tuning it, so any advice would be very much appreciated.
    We're running BO Enterprise XI R2 SP3 on Linux with Web Intelligence as the only reporting interface.  The database is Oracle RAC (3 node cluster) 10.2.0.4.

    Correction: I incorrectly said jobserver in the earlier post (I read your post wrong).
    You need to start a trace on the CMS (for querytiming), the Webi Report Server and the Connection Server (which accesses the db)
    For the CMS trace, stop the CMS, in ccm.config, add a '-trace -querytiming' to the end of the cmsLaunch line. Similarly, add a -trace to the command line for the Webi Report Server (I don't remember the exact line; I don't have a XI R2 deployment on Linux available right now)
    To enable tracing on the connection server, do the following:
    (SAP 1197745 - How to enable connection server tracing on a UNIX platform)
    Open cs.cfg in a text editor. These are located by default in
    Linux: bobje/enterprise115/linux_x86/dataAccess/RDBMS/connectionServer/cs.cfg
    Locate the following entry:
    Traces ClassID="csTRACELOG" Active="No"
    Change the "No" to "Yes".
    Traces ClassID="csTRACELOG" Active="Yes"
    Save the file.
    Restart the Web Intelligence Report Server.
    ====================
    NOTE:
    Be aware that connection server traces slow down the server performance. Detailed traces get generated when this level of tracing is enabled. Disable tracing when not needed.
    ====================
    PS: The Webi Report Server contains the Connection Server libraries. The Connection Server runs in-proc within the Webi Report Server. Hence the need to restart the Webi Report Server.
    Also, I encourage you to open a ticket with BO on this. Performance issues are never easy to troubleshoot, even less so on a forum such as this.
    Finally, I don't believe there is any document that lists all command line options. Or rather, if such a document exists, I don't believe it's available for public consumption.
