Software updates - will I lose all applications on...

A while ago I updated the software on my E71. After doing this I noticed that I had lost all applications on my device such as skype etc. No problem I thought....I will restore from a previous backup - unfortunately this backup had failed unbeknown to me and so I had to re-install everything again.
This has made me reluctant to upgrade the software on my phone but I am becoming increasingly aware that the software will become older and older and this will eventually be a problem.
Can someone please let this techno-phobe the best solution for how to upgrade the software without losing everything else stored on the phones memory. Maybe I could copy everything from the phones memory onto the memory card? But how can I do this?
Many thanks

Welcome to the forum!
Have you tried making a backup of device via OVI Suite on your PC?
Unfortunately E71 being a S60 3rd FP1 device does not have UDP = User Data preservation of newer devices which makes updating firmware a lot simpler.
With reference to memory card, if application has been installed on memory card it would be preserved during update but not if installed in phone memory unfortunately.

If you upgrade from 10.6 to 10.7/10.8 yes there is a risk you can lose your files if something goes wrong requiring a erase and install to fix it.
Your PPC programs will not work in 10.7/10.8
Mac's earlier than a Early 2011 machine shouldn't really upgrade to 10.7/10.8 due to slow performance issues.
If you Software Update from say 10.6.3 to 10.6.8, there is less risk, but possible.
You should make backups regardless, a 10.6 clone and extra copies of files on a external drive.

Could any one tell me why, since I updated to v 20, my Software update client always says “all applications are up-to-dated”?
It was not important until now with Maps 3.3.
I ma running v20.0.19, RM-505 Language set: Spain (05), unbranded
    Thanks

Because all software ARE up to date on your phone. The n97 is not given the map 3.03 update. It will be available for the n97 via a firmware update which has just recently been released. If it is not available for your phone, then your product code must not yet be available for updating.
@chanchan05 - Not sure regarding the map update... I have an N97 (not mini) and when I was checking for latest software updates, I received the map update on 28 Jan.... No official news from Nokia on FW 2.1...

  • I have iOS 10.7.5 and if i update to Mountain lion 10.8.2 will i lose all my old applications i've purchased and other software i've downloaded? and what is time machine ?

I have iOS 10.7.5 and if i update to Mountain lion 10.8.2 will i lose all my old applications i've purchased and other software i've downloaded? and what is time machine ?

No. You will not lose any of the applications and data will be safe.
But make sure that you have working backup. This is very important.
Time Machine is the built-in backup software/application.
    Best.

  • HT201413 updated last night and now ipod says to coonect to itunes which i cant because apple application support was not found.  tells me to uninstall and reinstall itunes.  Will i lose all my music or is it still on my ipod?

Updated ipod last night and now when turned on tells me to coonect to itunes (picture of usb cable with arrow to itunes).  I can't connect to itunes on computer because apple application support can't be found.  Tells me to uninstall then reinstall itunes.  Will I lose all my music or is it still on my ipod?

Under normal circumstances, an uninstall/reinstall doesn't touch your content. (That being said, it's still always a good idea to maintain a current backup at all times in case of disasters.)

  • HT1349 I tried to install an itunes update yesterday on my Dell Laptop.  I kept getting an error message.  Now it says I need to reinstall itunes on my computer.  Will I lose all of my music and how do I go about doing this?

I tried to install an itunes update yesterday on my Dell Laptop.  I kept getting an error message.  Now I cannot access itunes and it says I need to reinstall itunes.  Will I lose all of my music?

Installing, and uninstalling, applications never touches or removes the data.
Clean out and uninstall all the apple programs and software thru Programs and manually.
Might want to use Revo and CCleaner
I always use manual standalone installers (and keep a couple backup versions)
itunes 10.5 may affect iTunes media playlists, not sure, depends on what you have.
A search of these forums will show some threads.
I'd clean up vista, you need SP2 or later, and specific error message?
I wonder as you arenot the first with a dell if maybe the OS or included software.
Security programs like Norton and older versions of Kaspersky have been implicated.
Also settings in IE that affect pop-ups and plug-ins.

  • If i update my OS to iOS5 will i lose all my contacts and everything

if i update my OS to iOS5 will i lose all my contacts and everything

Updaing iPhone software does not touch any user data or settings. However, sync BEFORE you update. This will create a current iPhone backup. Also make sure that ALL content on your phone is either in your iTunes library or supported applications on your computer. That way, if something were to go wrong(rare), you can easily restore all of your data & content.

  • When updating my itunes up came: itunes won't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing - try reinstalling.  Where the file went I have no idea but, if I re-install will I lose all my purchases?

When updating my itunes on my PC (Windows 7) this message came up:  Itunes program won't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing.  Try reinstalling to fix this problem.
If I re-install, will I lose all my downloaded songs and other data I've accumulated over time?
    Thanks!!

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

I want upgrade my software to snow leopard. If I install it will I lose all my information on my computer?

It is always a good idea to backup your data prior to ANY update/upgrade.
That being said, 10.6 is designed to upgrade without the loss of data if you are moving from 10.4 or later.

  • If I update to ios6 will I lose all of my pictures?

If I update my iPhone 4 to iOS 6, will I lose all of my pictures?

Back up your phone in iTunes before updating or restoring the phone with iOS 6. Then you'll be prompted to choose between restoring the data on the phone before the update/restore or setting it up as new. Your pictures should still be there afterward as long as you dont set up your phone as a new phone. My pictures on both my iPhone 4s and iPad 2 were still there after I did it.
Its also best to go to your iPhones camera folder and copy all the pictures to your computer.

  • If I download a version update to my itouch, will I lose all my playlists?

If I download a new version update to my itouch, will I lose all of my playlists that I currently have on it?

Updating should not remove your playlists, though it's always possible that something could go wrong. It's usually best to have your playlists in iTunes so that you can restore them to your iPod should that ever be necessary.
    Regards.

  • I have collected alot of music over the years and the new update will delete all my music.  I have puchased a new computer about a year ago so the previous music that I have is not available.  Is there anyway to get the update and not lose all my music

I have collected alot of music over the past couple years and the new update for the itouch says that it will erase all music and videos on the ipod.  Is there anyway to do the update and not lose all my music or is there a way to take all the music off my ipod and store it on my computer to put back on after the update?  Any help

... I have had numerous computers over the past years
Let me guess, you have had numerous Windows computers, all of which crashed or became worthless virus-ridden junk. Happens every day, yet people think Macs are expensive.
Anyway, you are going to need the assistance of third party utilities to extract your iPod Touch's content. See wjosten's procedure here:

  • I am thinking of updating to the newest version for my Mac Laptop. I have the 10.6.8 should I update to the Mountain Lion OS X? If I update will I loose all my data, like documents, music, pictures?

Wondering if I should update my Mac Notebook which is a 10.6.8 versions to the newest Mountain Lion version? What are the positive and negatives about the new version? Also if I update will I loose all the date on my computer like documents, music, pictures etc..?

First check the Compatibility of your Mac...
    Upgrade to Mountain Lion
Then... Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
    you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.
(Get an EHD that is at least equal to your current Drive...)
Also, Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...
