Software upgrade for mac OS X 10.5.8

software upgrade for mac OS X 10.5.8

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, upgrade it as if it was a Core Duo Mac, and once done, if desired, open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

  • Skype upgrade for Mac 10.5.8 not working

[Topic title updated by moderator to be more descriptive. Original topic title was: "Skype upgrade for Mac not working"]
Skype just left my 79 y.o. father wihtout SKYPE, he is running 10.5.8 becasuse it is good enough for him, he is used to it aafter years of using it.
You cant ask an older person to start searching forums etc.
They rely on the companies that make the products they trust.
I have helped him download and install Skype_6.3.0.604.dmg (we are 500 km away) but the program now says it is not supported.
I can tell my dad to modify the /etc/hosts file and the info.plist.
    This is just ridiculous.
SKYPE: YOU SHOULD NOT GIVE THE CHANCE TO UPDATE TO A VERSION THAT IS NOT GOING TO WORK!!!!

Not to sound fraternising, but the matter of fact is that nothing has been changed in tcp/ip, that is used by Skype.  What has been changed is that Microsoft now manage the code, and with that comes the Microsoft way of doing things. If this includes complete lack of version control and software management, I suggest you do not change one thing.
What you do not explain and fail to mention is that features that used to work, does not work in your new versions, and the simplest way to get it to work is to remove everything that has been changed.
What has been changed is how the tcp/ip packets are sent on the Internet. The software that MS acquired used straight forward, standard tcp/ip with non-lingering sockets, which is the ITU-T variant of tcp/ip that is also the US FCC RFC. If Microsoft wants to implement Skype on Netbios, go ahead, but do not expect others to follow, and allow the rest of the world, including those that used to run Skype on Windows, to leave and find the attempt a complete waste of time, and the software utter worthless.
It is very well defined what Skype is expected to deliver of functionality, just now, it is to perform just as good as two years ago. If you cannot acheive this by Windows used on servers on the network, that is a change that removed functionality, and did not add anything. It is simple to get it back - drop the Windows relay servers. Microsoft cannot rewrite international standards - and do not tell us to endorse any attempt of that nature. It would be nice if the world was a cube, but all your effort in telling us that it is convenient does not change facts: it will be round as a bowling ball, and tcp/ip has to be fully standard, not one that keeps open long after the connection has been taken down to allow MS to implement IPX/SPX functionality in Skype. We are not interested, and nobody is, I doubt Mr. Nadella would endorse this had he known.

  • Skype 6.3 upgrade for Mac not working

[Topic title updated by moderator to be more descriptive. Original topic title was: "Skype upgrade for Mac not working"]
BE WARNED - just because you are being asked to upgrade your Skype, it does not mean it will work on your machine. I am a fairly regular user of Skype and this morning was unable to log-in, being told that I needed to upgrade. I did so to 6.3.0.602 but I was unable to log-in once the software had downloaded. After some research on the forums and finally a text chat with Support, I was told that Skype 6.3.0.602 requires a Mac OSX of 10.9 or above - I have 10.5.8
"So what can I do", I asked the tech support. The answer is nothing (unless I get new OS X software) - there is no Skype software programme that supports my operating system and no timeframe for when it might be available.
Huh? That's right. It's just not available. So for now, users with less than OS X 10.9 will be unable to use Skype when they are instructed to upgrade. It really doesn't make sense. But just so you know....

Please look at the top of the community page, and you will find a box "Search:". Write your problem here "Upgrade not working" and see what crops up. Most likely you will be taken somewher like here: http://community.skype.com/t5/Mac/quot-We-ve-signed-you-out-because-your-using-an-outdated-version/m...
Here you will read that the latest versions of Skype will not work on some of the versions of MacOS, and that PPC requires one version, Leopard another, Snow leopard another, Mountain Lion another. They are indoctrinated with a stamp in their forehead to enforce their congregation of true believers to install the latest with all "security fixes" or death is looming. They are not used to software that is 2 years old.
So, with Mac, we have different operating systems and different sets of libraries - and things may go belly up if you upgrade - a OS feature is done differently, a libary has been placed inside the OS, and is no longer needed - and if you try to use it, you will be trapped.
Install the latest version that works for your Mac, and make sure to freeze this. Update the "info.plist" file and tell Skype that you use their latest should they pry. As long as it works, do not change anything!
And make the change to stop Skype from checking every time you start.

  • ITunes can't download the software upgrade for my Ipod

I have a new Ipod Nano 8GB. When I connected to Itunes it tells me that there is a new software update available for it (I think it was version 1.1). ITunes then tries to download it.
The trouble is that I don't have broadband, and have no plans at present. My dial-up connection took over 3 hours to download ITunes when I first got the Ipod. I would be quite happy to let it take as long as that to download the software upgrade for the nano but I tried several times and the line kept dropping.
Is it available anywhere as a stand-alone download? (I can download using another machine I have access to which cannot have itunes installed on it)
    Thanks,
    Stewart

If y are getting an error that yu can't contact the update server then:
    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem
Otherwise why can't our download the update?

Trying to upgrade Lightroom 3 to Lightroom 5 upgrade for MAC. After downloading the dmg file, I can't seem to install the program. I get an error message that states, "The following disk images couldn't be opened. Lightroom_5L511.dmg not recognized."
What do I need to do to be able to install the upgrade for Lightroom 5?

It's probably a corrupted download.  Try re-downloading.  If you're on a corporate network behind a proxy server, try finding reliable Internet ;-)

  • Is there virus protection software avaliable for Mac osx intel

is there virus protection software avaliable for Mac osx intel?

Plenty, but none of them really necessary. 10.6.8 has it's own in-built system. Just keep the security updates up to date to cover the latest malware quarantine definitions.

  • How do you apply a Blackberry Software Upgrade on Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard ??

Bell has issued a notice that all my blackberry users upgrade their software but they are all using Mac OS 10.4.11 Tiger or Leopard.
I understand that Blackberry Desktop Manager is windows-only software and Bell business support was unable to accomodate us.  Anyone out there able to do this without windows-emulation software ?  Is there Mac OS X compatible software coming in the future ? I need to advise users currently how to apply this and for the future can we stay tied to this as a mobile solution with no native software support ? Please advise any feasible workarounds ?

I really wish RIM would come out with a real BlackBerry Desktop equivalent for Mac, but right now I don't think there's any way you can do upgrades directly from your Mac without using Windows via emulation or BootCamp. Unfortunately, RIM's only official word about this that I can find is that upgrades are not supported on Mac (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB13963). I use VMware for this.
Not exactly convenient, but maybe your carrier would do the upgrade for you at one of their stores.

  • Software protection for Mac OS X

Reading discussion on http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009/041709-first-mac-os-x-botnet.html?page=1 makes me believe that I need to have a software protection.
Can somebody indicate me a software to keep my MBP protected (OS X, Snow Leopard).
    Thanks

I understand that is usefull have an A/V installed, even though there is no viruses for Mac. Is that correct?
Depends on your situation. I haven't run, or even installed AV software on any Mac I've owned for the past 11 years. I'll try to explain why.
    1) There are a few Mac viruses out there. BUT, they died with OS 9. More specifically, they died with OS X, 10.5.x Leopard when it was no longer possible to run OS 9 as Classic within OS X. Even then, if you managed to pick up one of those few, and not even very harmful viruses, they would only affect OS 9 running within the Classic environment since they can't run in OS X.
No one has successfully created a virus which can run in OS X in the over 10 years it's been around.
    2) Doesn't mean someone won't eventually succeed. Until then though, you're wasting a lot of CPU time guarding against nothing. And when a virus does come out that works in OS X, your AV software will still be useless against the initial attack since all AV software works by finding known threats. It can't protect against something it's never seen before.
Heuristics are no help, either. AV software uses this technique to help identify new, previously unknown threats by recognizing similarities to known malware. Since there are no viruses for OS X, there's also nothing for heuristics to compare against, so it will still miss the first viruses.
    3) Your biggest defense is between your ears. Don't download illegal software. It's intentionally loaded with malware. If an admin box pops up asking you to confirm something when you haven't done anything to prompt such a request in the first place, DENY.
It kind of takes the fun out of surfing the web, but infected and purposely malicious sites have killed casual use of the web. Even known, "safe" sites aren't necessarily safe. Look at Google Images. You can bet they aren't happy about all of those infected images that prompt the automatic Javascript download of the current Trojan apps pretending to be Mac AV software. Someone managed to hack into and infect a large part of their servers.
    4) Where you may not have a choice is in a business. Most require AV software on each and every station. Being on a Mac doesn't give you special dispensation. While there are no viruses for the Mac, you could easily forward a Windows virus attached to an email you received to someone else running Windows. That user and your IT department would not be happy with you.
So in my personal opinion, AV software is a complete waste of disk space and system resources at this time. Especially for a Mac in your own home. Just watch out for the few known Trojans.
