Software v3.0 and original iPhone

I've read that two features in the 3.0 software won't work on the original iphone: stereo bluetooth and graphics texting. Most others will: cut and paste, landscape modes, etc. Anyone know if any of the other new features won't work on the original iPhone? Thanks.

As far as we know, the only two new features that won't work are MMS and A2DP.
Keep in mind that other things, such as navigation software that uses the GPS chip, will also not work due to hardware limitations.

Question about upgrade and original iPhone

There might be other thread already, but have a question about upgrade to 3G.
I have the original iPhone and have upgraded to iPhone 3G.
The question is whether I can use the original iPhone indefinitely.
People at Apple store was telling me I can use the original iPhone (without the phone functionality) as long as I don't restore the firmware.
Is this true? What happens if Apple releases firmware in the future? Would this mean that I can only use this as long as machine doesn't require restore? I wanted to give it to one of my family members so she can use it as iPod so any info would be helpful ....

My understanding is the same as the Apple Store Employee.
If you try to update the software on an iphone with no service, I believe that it will be rendered useless.
It may be possible to swap the SIM card for software upgrades, etc., not sure.

10.3.9 and Original iPhone?

Hi I have an Original 8gb iPhone (pre-3G) and I was wondering if it would work with Mac OS X 10.3.9.
I have been going back and fourth between operating systems and I find that 10.3.9 runs the best on my TiBook 550. Since I usually sync my phone with this computer, as it has all my iTunes, I need to know if I can use 10.3.9, or if I need to keep it at 10.4.11

IPhone 3G and Original iPhone docking cradles

The new 3G does not come with a cradle. Using the OLD cradles works......but you really have to FORCE the 3G into the old dock cradle. Does anyone know if that's OK or if I'm asking for a problem by using the old cradles and making it fit?.

The Apple ear buds will NOT work with the iPhone. Only iPods. I mean the volume control. Why is that? Bad decision making on Apples part. IMO. That's not to say they won't eventually add support for it in a future firmware update. I'm in the same boat. I bought them and can't use volume control either.

Sync problem with OS 3.0 and original iPhone

Under iPhone OS 2.2.1, at the start of each Sync, the first 10 seconds was devoted to backing up my iPhone which has less than 2.2 GB on it. Now, under the 3.0 OS, it is taking almost 2 MINUTES to backup the same amount of data!
Has anyone found a way to fix this and get the backup speed back to just a few seconds?

After a week of syncing, the speed is faster. Not as fast as under 2.2.1 but faster than it was a week ago. Probably the speed hit is due to the extra overhead that 3.0 added.
So I'm closing this question.

Is it o.k. to use original iPhone dock for iPhone 4S?

I've still had my original iPhone dock. I connected my new iPhone 4S to the original dock. It is working good to syncing on iTune with no problem I think...
If this works, can I use this original dock with iPhone 4S?
As I know, new iPhone 4S dock is compatible with only iPhone 4 and 4S. But I wonder this old and original iPhone dock is compatible with new iPhone 4S.

If the dock works, it should be ok to use with your iPhone 4S. The pinouts of the connectors haven't changed and I've used an old iPod sync cable with my iPhone 4S with no problems.

I lost my itunes after syncing and older iphone to my powermac g4. Originally I had an older ipod nano that I would sync to the g4 and everything was fine. Lost itunes music even though preferences had been set in advance for not automatically syncing.

My itunes library had been fine. I had been using an older ipod nano to sync with my itunes library and had been doing manual syncs, with the preferences in itunes set for not allowing "ipods or iphones" to sync automatically. I found out that apple had a program to replace the battery on this older ipod nano, so I sent it in. It was great, they didn't have an exact replacement and sent me a later ipod nano. However, this ipod nano is so new - I will have to get a newer computer with a later operating system to use it.
So, I thought I'd use my old iphone to listen to my old playlists. I thought the preferences were set for not automatically syncing iphone to itunes.
I've had problems in the past with the syncs with this iphone and my computer because of the USB port (1.1). I'm thinking this was the problem.
The apple store did something to update the software on my iphone when it wasn't working one day. I think that when I tried to sync the iphone to the g4 cube via the old port (1.1) it basically wiped out everything on my itunes. Whatever was my selected playlist for my iphone - that was the only music
that remained on my computer and the iphone. I only had about 20 songs purchased on my library, but alot of music that had been downloaded, I gave away those original cds. I did have a back up on my external drive, but that thing died a few weeks ago from some random power outtages we had this fall.
I'm not looking to purchase retrieval software or have some outside third party to retrieve it for me. It's not that much music lost. I just wanted confirmation that this is what happened: that my old iphone sync is what erased the music.

The old iTunes library was lost with the old PC. However, it all that music and content is still on your iPod there are many ways you can extract this content from the iPod and import it back into iTunes.
Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time. It will recognize the iTunes library on the new PC as a new library. If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library. So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.

I have an original IPhone that can't connect to ITunes. I did a factory reset and restored to firmware version 3.1.3. Please note that both my ITouches (2nd and 3rd gen) sync to ITunes perfectly. However, the IPhone never connects. Thoughts?

OK, my original iphone has just completed a factory restore. It's connected to my laptop, and ITunes restored it to firmware 3.1.3. Now, I can't connect to the ITunes store. I get an error message every time stating connection timed out, or something to that effect. Well, both my IPod Touch 2nd gen and 3rd gen connect perfectly to ITunes, so I doubt it's related to proxy settings, firewalls, or anything of the sort (believe me, I've spend 15 hours researching this without an answer). So, is there a problem with the original iphone with version 3.1.3 syncing with ITunes version 10.5.1 (the most recent one)?
I would LOVE an answer as this is driving me crazy.

Mine had a SIM in it. Originally, when I took out the SIM and tried to restore it with nothing in it, it wouldn't work without a SIM card. So ... I took the SIM that was in that phone previously, put it back in and completed the system restore. I then proceeded to go through the process with AT&T of adding a data plan, which I did, and then it successfully completed the system restore. However, now if I run diagnostics on it, it will not verify ITunes Store. If I try to connect to ITunes store, I'll get the network connection timed out error I referenced earlier in this thread. I'm considering jailbreaking it and putting on an earlier software version. Your thoughts?

2.0 software on original iPhone - Nightmare

Any of you having any or all of these same problems now that you have 2.0 software?
1) Getting a text message, clicking "Reply" and watching it sit, blank, on the screen, indefinitely, because it simply never loads the texts now?
2) Getting a text message, clicking "Reply" and watching it sit, blank, on the screen until you get angry and start pressing buttons, THEN it appears?
3) Waiting upwards of 5 to 10 seconds just for the "Notes" feature to allow you to do ANYTHING like type on it, or edit it?
4) Using the Maps feature, clicking things, not responding, clicking again with your finger, waiting 5 to 7 seconds for things to respond?
5) Trying to type, and something is just plain different. It doesnt flow as smoothly. It doesnt spell words correctly as often. It makes stupid mistakes and actually suggests NON words as you type. I used to be able to type the "F" word and now I get "rich" every time instead, or "fuch" which isnt even a word! Is it?
6) Having to stretch just a little farther when you type because they spaced the keyboard keys a little further apart for all those people with fat fingers who complained...
7) Trying to bring up your contacts, and immediately start scrolling, but you cant. Just simply cant. For 1 second, 2 seconds, 4 seconds, then l...okay now you can scroll ... and by that time you've already tried to scroll to "P" but kept trying and so it ends up on "Z" instead because it remembers all your finger actions while it was FROZEN?
This is crap. Nightmare. This thing has been downgraded in my opinion. If the original iPhone shipped like this, people would have complained to high heaven. Maybe this is their way of getting us to buy another phone (3G) with the "faster processor". Upsell technique?
Is anyone else having these problems? Any solutions you've found?

Yea, I had the same problems. There are MANY threads on here listing the exact same problems. I took mine to the Apple Store and exchanged it for a new one with 1.1.4 installed. If the Original iPhone shipped like this they would have had a hard time selling them as the user experience is terrible.
Hopefully an update will be released soon to alleviate these problems...until then I'm sticking to 1.1.4. (and even if they do release an update I am waiting to see how it is received before I guinea pig it again)
The saddest part is that your backup is now in 2.0 so if you exchange your iPhone you will have to start all over as new. None of your "Notes", SMS's, Weather locations, Stocks, Bookmarked YouTube videos, Home screen shortcuts, Google Maps bookmarks ,email accounts or photo's will be saved. I suggest backing up the photos you took with your iPhone using iPhoto (or Windows Explorer) and writing down any important notes on, God forbid, paper. Everything else will have to be redone. Oh also make sure you sync your music purchased on the iPhone back to your computer (which it usually does by default) or you'll lose those too.
Terrible, terrible state of affairs this update has been. I just wish I knew why some people do NOT have, or seem to have problems. I ran the official update and used the restore feature several times but nothing worked. Maybe they just don't use the features enough to notice the difference but I use mine every day and, as I am quite the proficient iPhone typist, I noticed it almost immediately and it drove me crazy.

I have an original iphone that has been terminated from it's AT&T account & given to me, I use it as an ipod touch with a camera, but I recently heard I won't be able to install the 2.0 software upgrade for it since it's no longer activated, is this true?

Aha! It worked!! My original iphone which had service terminated is now up and running with version 2.0 & all the apps that I got, wow, super monkey ball really is fun.

For an iPhone5 you will need iTunes 10.7, not 10.6.3. Once you have Snow Leopard installed you will need to update it to 10.6.8 in order to install iTunes 10.7
1) Make sure your computer meets Snow Leopard technical specifications - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575 This mostly means making sure it is an Intel Mac and has at least 1GB RAM (at least 2 GB is recommended). Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac". Does it mention "PowerPC" (not Intel), or Intel? To check RAM continue to "More Info...". It should say you have at least 1GB of "memory".
2) Buy a Snow Leopard disc from Apple online

Upgrading original iPhone software to 2.2 update?

Can I update my original iPhone with the new 2.2 software update? Everytime I plug my iPhone into iTunes and check to see whether there are any new updates for my phone it comes back with version 1.1.4 is the current version. I am running Mac OS x 10.4.11 on an Intel iMac running iTunes 7.6.1.

you need to update your itunes for sure. We are now at 8.0.2.20.
Update that then check.
