SoftwareUpdateCheck Relaunches Continuously - Software Update

My SoftwareUpdateCheck is out of control.
My MacBook is constantly checking for software updates, and it's sucking up the processor on my machine, and download resources of my network. And I can't get it to stop.
The "Check for updates" checkbox in my "Software Update" System Preference pane is currently unchecked, but it has a remarkable ability to re-check itself.
In my Activity Monitor, SoftwareUpdateCheck bounces up and down between single digit percentages of my CPU power, and 80% (sometimes higher).
When I check the network with an SNMP monitor, my MacBook is maxing out the download bandwidth every second or so, until I force quit the process (yes, my office mates hate me!).
My MacBook fan runs until I "Force Quit" the process. Then it relaunches in anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes (even while the System Preference for automatic checking remains unchecked).
So what have I tried? I've deleted (repeatedly) the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist file from both the main Library, and from my user Library (although that one doesn't seem to be re-occuring there recently), and restarted.
I've installed all available updates.
I can't get this to stop. Help!
Any ideas?

I am trying to update to iTunes 10 to us my new iPad, but I can not remove a corrupted? "apple software update" program... I can get everything else off, but due to "previous version" of software update it will not continue.
I stopped in to see one of the genius at the local store who referred me to "Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable" (I am trying to install it on a Windows XP System)
The last version on iTunes on my PC was iTunes 7.
    Thanks for your help,
    Julia from Woodridge

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • When Firefox shows me an update and asks if I'd like to update, I click continue, but it doesn't update. It just goes to a "software update" window and says "connecting to the update server..." and then doesn't do anything else. It never updates. HELP!

When I sign on to Firefox, a "Software Update" pops up and asks if I'd like to update Firefox. I click Yes/Continue and when I do, the page says "Downloading Firefox" - connecting to the update server... - but it never finishes. It continually shows the blue/white striped line.

Start at '''http://www.mozilla.com''' and download the latest
version. At the completion of the download '''don't let the setup
start Firefox for you''', when the setup ends, start Firefox in your
normal manner this way you will be less likely to create a new profile.
The extra startup pages are temporary -- read them. The next time
Firefox comes up you should be back to starting with your normal home page.
Note: Firefox must be down once the install starts.
:Close Firefox with File>Exit. Then make sure Firefox is not running --
:On Windows: check the "Processes" tab in the Windows Task Manager.
:On Mac: Firefox > Quit then Command+option+Esc, if Firefox running use Force quit
    '''Permission errors on Mac:'''
"If you were getting permission errors on a Mac, download the latest
Firefox version, then uninstall and reinstall Firefox. '''Do not let the uninstall remove remove anything but Firefox itself'''; otherwise, you will lose your profile directories and files as they contain your settings,
bookmarks, history, extensions, passwords, and cookies.
If you can't download as mentioned above, find your system and the Firefox version you want in releases, download and start the install as seen above

  • MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 continues to appear

This has been the first really strange issue since I upgraded to Leopard. Ever since the MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 in Software Update, it continues to appear as if it was not installed. If I look at my installation log, it shows that I have installed it about 9 times since it was released. Here are the last few entries in my installation log:

Is it safe to ignore this update? What is going on? Is there something wrong with my system? I haven't noticed any other problems.. I have no idea how Mac OS X determines if I need an update or not.

    OK, here's what i did:
    1) navigate to the: /Library/Updates sub-directory
(as in: "Macintosh HD" - "Library" folder - "Updates" folder
    2) there should be a file named, "index.plist" - this is
the definition file for the update - i suspect this should
be removed by the Updater once the update is complete.
    3) rename the file (don't delete it) ... i renamed the
    file to, "index.plist.onhold"
you probably don't have to, but i rebooted the system, to
ensure nothing broke. afterwards, i did a "Software Update"
and it reported the system is up to date.

  • HT4623 trying to download ios 6 software update to my iphone 4s. While it is downloading it suddenly pauses and knocks me out of my wi-fi network. I then can't access the network in order to continue the download.

    I have a iphone 4s.
I was trying to download ios 6 software update.
Put in a wifi network and plugged in before starting download.
Soon after I hit download it paused and said to choose wifi network before continuing.
It had knocked out my wifi connection.
When I turn the wifi back on and ask it to choose a network it can't find it anymore.
Meanwhile I can't get it to continue to download the ios 6 update.

Instead of trying to update OTA connect your phone to your computer with USB abd have the latest itunes open and do it that way. If it says you are not connected click cancel and see if the download continues.  iOS 6.1.3 is now the latest so that is what you will be updating to

Interuppted software update and new startup screen comes on stays grey with logo and beeps continuously 3 times. Tried safe restart reset pram. No luck any suggestions?

Three beeps at startup usually means that there is a RAM problem.  I would open the MBP and reseat the RAM.  Perhaps an SMC and Pram resets may also be in order.

  • Why does Adobe Reader continue to state a software update is available after 9.4.4 security patch?

Applied security patch 9.4.4 to Adobe Reader and it continues to state that there is a software update available.  It will download the same 9.4.4 patch and nothing changes - the "about adobe reader" does state it is 9.4.4 release.

You'll get a response if you report this problem on the Acrobat Reader forum.

  • PowerBook continuously reboots after running Software Update

This morning I ran Software Update on my Powerbook. There were about 5-6 items including the latest Mac OS X update, Java, iTunes and a couple other things. The update scripts ran without incident. However, when it tries to restart, it keeps rebooting itself over and over. I first get a black screen, then the gray screen with the Apple logo in the middle, then the spinning circle comes up and the machine reboots again. There were no error messages. I have to hold down the power button to shut down the machine and break the rebooting cycle. Any ideas of what I could try?

Can you boot from the OSX install DVD? Then Disk Utility may be able to repair it.
Can you boot in Safe mode, by holding down the Shift key?

You may be able to start and use Disk Utility for repairs.
Sometimes, downloading the Combo Updater of any OSX update and installing it works better than Software Update, for no good reason.

  • Latest imac software update seems to have messed up disk utility

I just performed (as I always do) the latest apple software update that just popped up on my screen. I did the upgrade (for itunes and quicktime) on both my 1.25 GHz G4 imac (system 10.3.9) and my 10.7 GHz G4 (system 10.3.9).
For both machines I ran disk utility within 15 minutes of the upgrade, having performed no other operations. In both cases, Disk utility failed, giving me the message: "disk utility has lost its connection with disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and launch disk utility."
Relaunch was not effective. I ran disk warrior on both computers and it did not help.
Any clues? Seems like the latest updates must have done something crazy to the software.
    Thanks!

  • Plz help...problem w/ verify/repair permissions after software update

    Hi,
I just ran the software update from the Mac menu and wanted to verify/repair permissions afterwards. First I used Onyx and when it was executing, the system would not respond after a couple of minutes. So then I tried Disk Utility and I get a message saying "Disk Utility internal error: Disk Utility has losts its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." And I did, and the same message appears.
    What else can I do?
    Thanks.
    PowerBook G4 15   Mac OS X (10.3.6)

Have just done software download - gone to repair permissions and have got same message. Running on 10.3.9. Anyone any ideas as to what is going on here. Did NOT run repair permissions before the update (Yes I know I should have done). Could this be a factor. There are a number of other threads on this forum concerning this exact problem - but so far have found no explanation or solutions.
Disk varified and reported OK. Mac seems to be operating OK. How does Disk utility "link" to Disk Management Tool?
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks
