Sol 10 Sparc - Sol 11 Express ?

I'm running Sol 10 on a SB1500 with zfs root.
Is there an upgrade path to Sol 11 Express. I'm used to doing live upgrades via zfs snapshots, which give me the ability to fall back to earlier versions easily. Is there something similar for this upgrade?
Edited by: user9315097 on Dec 16, 2010 11:51 AM

Well if there is no upgrade option, can I at least do this
create another filesystem on my existing zpool for a new root
boot Sol11 express off dvd and install in the new filesystem
mount other filesystems (/home, /local, etc) from the existing zpool?
At boot time decide if I want sol10 or sol11EX.
Remember, this is a sparc workstation with a single zpool.

  • VNC login not possible from Sol 11 Express login

    Hello,
after booting the machine the login prompt is shown (no auto - login)
I want to connect using vnc - however this is not possible.
Only after logging in locally vnc is working as expected...
    Bye

    How about this?
    - Use remote login, such as ssh
    - Set a VNC password with vncpasswd
    - Start VNC-Server, for examle "vncserver :1"
    - Access VNC remote with a VNC Client, for example "vncviewer <host-ip>:1"

  • No gnome in Solaris Express 11?

    Hi,
I have installled Solaris Express 11 (sol-11-exp-201011-text-x86.iso) on VMWare.
After installation I have discovered that there is no GUI.
Have I installed incorrect image? Or maybe Sol 11 doesn't have gnome?
    Regards,
    Daniel

Try "pkg search gnome" - this will search the online repository for gnome packages. The install CD does not contain a full set of packages - it just gets Sol 11 Express up and running. Use the pkg command to install the rest.

  • Booting Solaris 11 Express from Compact Flash !

    Hello,
I've managed to get SOL 11 Express to boot off of a Compact Flash drive. I would now like to minimize the write/erase cycles to extend the life of the compact flash drive. This document outlines the steps that can be taken to reduce writing to the flash drive.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19469-01/820-4893-13/compact_flash.html
The guide explain how to redirect log entries to an NFS share and then how to handle the swap partition.
There are 2 issues that I'm up against -
    1. I don't have an external server to redirect my log entries. I would like to have my logs written to a hard disk attached to the server itself rather than an NFS share.
    2. The entries to the swap partition in the guide seem to reference how to make the changes in linux. Would the same technique work even in SOL ?
Any help with the above 2 points and any others that I might have missed will be appreciated.
    Thanks in adance

Ok - Unfortunately it does not work even on a reboot. The problem I think it happening is that the storage pool (that hosts the moved /var folder) does not seem to be available at boot time. So when I delete the original /var, the system complains that it's unable to write to the various logs. I'm trying to see if there's a way to make the storage pool available at boot time. But I don't know enough of Solaris to get there quickly.
If anyone else has some additional pointers, that will be great.....

  • MB 915/G Combo MS-7058 video card options or suggestions on the new market

First off my apologies. I wasn't sure which forum to place my question under,
    Retired Motherboards or Video Cards.
Quick summary I'm looking to upgrade my video card on an older mother board and have run into problems with a new board working. I think the problem is a backwards compatibility issue.  I need help  with a list of what video cards I can buy that are available new preferably if not a list of where to go and what to watch for. I would like to increase the speed/ram. My skill level is around, open the case swap out the item and insert the disk. With a search forums and try to find the answer/follow directions or suggestions.
    In more detail,
I'm looking to upgrade my video card from NVIDIA GeForce 6 Series  NX-6600  256mb card on a an MSI 915P/G combo. The install/instruction manual lists under the above combo name MS-7058 (v1.X) ATX Motherboard and  below the image of the board there is also the text of G52-M7058x1.
The video card option for placement is in the sole PCI Express X16 slot (no on motherboard graphics and/or connection options I know of)   and I assuming from what I've tried researching that the PCI Express x1(mentioned elsewhere but all suggestions were cards no longer for sale) is some sort of standard of limit and my motherboard is too old despite newer cards fitting into the slot and claiming backwards compatibility to the "PCI Express or Pci Express 2.0".
Part of that possible assumption of my issue comes from the fact the mother board can have ether DDR1 or DDR2 ram for memory  but a video card with DDR3 ram would not work. Also the software from the included disk and from the from the website install correctly for the card to function other than the basic windows drivers leaving the card unable to run any games.   For reference the video card purchased and tried was a  EVGA Geforce GT 610 SC9super clocked) with 2 GB of DDR3 Memory. Which i hopefully will have returned for a refund soon.  I spent most of the day trying to install the software by their program , by launching from disk directly, from downloading the most current version from the manufacturer's website and checking with Microsoft for possible system change updates.
My original invoice August 2005 lists the  pre order lists the Item VGMS-NX6600/256E   then under description MSI NX6600-TD256E/PCIEX/256MB for the grand price of $169.00  deleviery receipt lists the card as item VGXM-X66DHEJTZ1   Description XMEDIA 6600 256MB PCIE DVI/TV
Power Supply 630 watts installed July 2008 I can not get the full listings of voltage and amps per connectors without taking the powers supply loose from the case(which requires shutting the system off, so I hoping I won't need to but will if the information will help). I do not feel power is an issue due to the size and the power supply was unneeded upgrade,  that I just wanted to replace when swapping out a motherboards damaged from a lighting hit or power surge. System was running fine for years.
    General system information
Windows XP professional SP3 All updates current.
    Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
2.00 GB of Ram DDR 1
    Videocard  NVIDA 6600   Driver 6.14.12.9573
3 hard drives of varying sizes 500GB,1TB and 2TB  Plus one external  with external power supply 1.5TB drive
If more information is needed please let me know.
The best advice and help would be a list of currently for sale video cards that will work with links to places (and the actual model even better) like New Egg,  or if there is such a card at the local Best Buy(outstanding advice on this non compatible/working card....I won't digress into my own mistake of buying there). I'm way out of date on information and standards about computers and hardware and need help  figuring out what Video Cards to look at for purchasing.   Preferably new, then re manufactured with warranty then used...  The main game I play that strains my system but is playable is call of duty modern warfare 2 and would like to run 3 if possible. Although better rates with COD MW2 and COD 4 MW.

100% correct on the mother board
The card I had tried was EVGA---GeForce-GT-610 2GB DDR3 I can't post external links but it was from Best Buy. The  box claimed requirements are that it needs PCI Express or PCI Express 2.0 compliant motherboards with one open graphic slot.  The best I could get out of it was slightly working with Windows XP basic driver which no games would run. No selecting drivers helped from the Add Hardware program.
So I should make sure it lists "PCI Express X16" and  " version 1 " "1MB(in reference to what part?)" or words to that effect?  I was mislead by the box above for capability and "NVIDIA" on it, am I correct in assuming it was a generic whore knock off which bought the rights to stick NVIDIA name on the outside for a standard or software?  Especially since the actual video card says EVGA and not NVIDIA on it....  I won't make that mistake hopefully again.
Due to age I was buying a cheap fill in card,(old one was working fine but I figured a good training/practice exercise and to see how much better the games looked  to encourage me going forward on my first build) until I can start ordering and building to  the current upgradeable standards.   I'm trying to catch up on standards and not  have a firewire or zipdrive experience. Although I might put a 5 1/4 disk drive in unused bay for show    I would prefer not to buy another per-assembled option and decent computer part stores near me are lacking. Or I lack knowledge of their locations. If it matters I'm in Charlotte, NC USA
My budget is up to about $200 although I would like to stay around $100.00 (usa dollars) if possible. I think that gives me realistic options even with places like Best Buy. If I'm not, please correct me. I'm aware best Buy will give me a special 30-50% price increase  but my local options for shops are hurting, the "best place for reputation" is a story of shame.

  • How to run a script at boot

    Hello,
I'm trying to make a simple script to execute at the boot time, which call a program ( C ), but I cant do it. I don't know if there is some special "template" to make that script (like Freebsd has). If you could give some help, I'm new at Solaris (by the way, using Sol 10, and Sol 11 Express).
    thanks,
    Miguel Garcia

That should be all, any script named S-something and which is placed in /etc/rc2.d or /etc/rc3.d will be executed at boot by the /sbin/rc2 and /sbin/rc3 scripts.
It will be called with the argument "start".
If its not working, test the script standalone (i.e. /etc/rc3.d/Sdiverse start) and see what it returns.
Also, the $PATH and $LD_LIBRARY_PATH might contain unexpected (i.e. minimum) values. Typically $PATH is set to /usr/bin and /usr/sbin and $LD_LIBRARY_PATH will only contain /lib and /usr/lib .
The working directory is probably / .
For rc3.d scripts, also check the logfile:
    /var/svc/log/milestone-multi-user-server:default.log
    .7/M.

  • Resolv.conf - blank every new start of machine or waking up from sleep

resolv.conf - blank every new start of machine or waking up from sleep
    how to solve?

On my laptop running Sol 11 express, I do indeed have dhcpagent running.
Prior to this, I was running Solaris 10 U9, with dhcpagent running.
I manually tweaked by resolv.conf file, and it was left alone even when my ip address changed within the office, it was left alone.
Now with Solaris 11 express, it habitually overwrites my tweaks. For whatever reason, the dhcp server will hand out the search strings properly to the windows vm running under virtual box, but solaris isn't getting them. I've got my login script set to copy a good version over as I login, and an cron job set to see if the entries have evaporated and re-copy again.
Would be nice to be able to disallow dhcpagent from touching/breaking resolv.conf.

  • Mounting Sol 8 SPARC disk on Solaris 10 x86

I have been having a very difficult time mounting a Solaris 8 (SPARC) SCSI disk on a Solaris 10 x86 box. The disk is recognized (it shows up under format as c2t2d0). I cannot mount it at all.
The individual slices will mount under another Sol 8 machine. I can also boot the x86 machine with System Rescue CD, and it will mount the individual SunOS slices as UFS with the -o ro option.
I have look extensively on the web for a solution, with no luck so far. I am clearly missing something very basic. I'd appreciate any pointers.
    Thanks!
    Tom

UFS on Solaris is endian-specific. Solaris does not support mounting big-endian UFS (SPARC) on a little-endian host (x86). I don't know that anyone was trying to work on a converter.
The other problem you'll run into is that x86 drivers expect an MBR label on the disk with a VTOC inside a Solaris partition, while SPARC disks usually have only the VTOC label.

  • Where can I download older Solaris 10 cd images (sol-10-u2-ga-sparc-v1.iso)

  • [Sol 10 11/06 SPARC on Sun Blade 2500] Could not determine boot disk?

    dear all,
I have a problem during installation of Solaris 10 11/06 Sparc on Sun Blade 2500. After I choosing "Initial Install" at "Select Upgrade or Initial Install" stage, appears the following error message :
"Note : Default install is not possible. Default boot disk could not be determined"
I have already concerned that the installation DVD is well burned, and the DVD-ROM is worked, but I'm not sure that the HD itself is well or defect. Could anyone tell me or figure out how would I do?

Most likely you have a disk problem. I think it may not have found a disk. If the install process left you in a shell, I would suggest using format, to see what it thinks. My guess it does not see any disks.
Another option from the ok prompt (also called OBP), is run probe-scsi or whatever the device type it. Check the options available at the ok prompt.

    Prakash

As per the usual setup of a shared SAN disk. The file system used is UFS. when i started installing oracle clusterware i came to a point where i had to run root.sh. the error i got was UFS filesystem not supported.
So now i get stuck in deciding which filesystem oracle clusterware would support. As i had the sun storedge QFS file system setup in the document i continued to follow it.
If you have any steps for configuring oracle clusterware to use the UFS file system it would be an additional help. As i have the UFS file system setup ready at my end.

  • Cant download Required OS and Component Patches for Sol. 10 SPARC-Sunsolve

    Hi guys,
I've been trying for days now, but I cant seem to download the latest Java_ES_Required or Component Patches for Solaris 10 sparc. Whenever I try and download I get this error message from Sunsolve:
    SunSolve Error
You have encountered the following error(s) or warning(s):
o An application error has occurred. The error is logged for further analysis.
    The URL is: http://sunsolve.sun.com/show.do?target=patches/patch-access
Anyone know what the heck is going on, or how I go about getting Sun to fix it?
    Regards
    Darinder

Did you logged into your sun account and tried it.
