Solairs Studio 12.3 via IPS for Solaris 11 - when?
Hi Everyone,
Hope your holiday season is going well?
Just like to find out when SS12.3 will be available via IPS for Solaris 11 Users? And if so, what IPS server will it be hosted on?
PS. Will Netbeans 7.1 be available via IPS as well, or will Netbeans continue to use it's existing distributions methods?
PPS. Here is the reference to IPS for SS12.3 : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solarisstudio/downloads/index.html
Oracle Solaris Studio 12.3 via IPS is coming soon. Today, you can download and install the tarfile version on Solaris 11:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solarisstudio/downloads/index.html
Depending on your Solaris 11 OS install, you may need to also install additional OS packages (e.g. system/header for system header files, etc.)
The Oracle Solaris Studio IPS repos are available today and have the 12.2 release and updates:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solarisstudio/downloads/solaris-studio-downloads-1403397.html
(need to use free Oracle Account to log in, request an Oracle Solaris Studio certificate, install ssl cert/key, add publisher, etc.)
I'm unaware if NetBeans will be available via IPS, but a good place to ask is on their user forum ([email protected]):

64-bit WLS 11G for Solaris?
I can not locate the 64-bit version of WLS 11G for Solaris. When I go to the download page all I see are 32-bit versions (at least they look like 32-bit version as denoted by the filenames such as wls1031_solaris32.bin).
I have attempted to go through the e-delivery site but do not want to download a 21 part 11Gig file if it is not the correct one.
I would appreciate any help at all.I am pretty confident that you need the 64 bit JVM for your platform, then you need to use the generic installer, this is based on how it has been done in prior releases.
So you can find the available JVM's for your platform here:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/files/oracle%20fusion%20middleware%2011gr1%20(11%201%201%201%200)%20certification%20matrix.xls
In this case that would be Sun JVM 1.6.0_11+
OR
JRockit 6 Update 5 R27.6.2+
Then you should be able to run the generic installer here with that downloaded supported JDK:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/htdocs/wls_main.html
I was not able to find anything specific on the documentation pages that described this process in detail, but you can always open a support case to get some assistance. I will check with the documentation team to see if that is going to be documented or already is.
If you look at the 10gR3 releases, it shows how the generic installer is used, for example:
http://e-docs.bea.com/platform/suppconfigs/configs/solaris/solaris10_103.html#104355 -
Reports 6I and Oracle 8i(8.1.6.0) for solaris
I have downloaded Reports 6i for solaris.
When I install it a ( Curses ) based GUI.
Comes on . After installing it. Oracle
stops working ? whats wrong ? it installs
its own NET8 driver which I believe is
causing the problem.
nullThe Net8 Configuration Assistant allows you to add databases into a file called tnsnames.ora. Do not manually edit this file or you will not be able to une Net8 Configuration Assistant unless you delete tnsnames.ora.
it asks me if i want to use a directory service?? please advise me what this is for and should i use it
saying no is ok.
if i say no it then asks me to pick 81, or 8 i picked 8i
8i is the correct answer here
then it asks me to enter the service name?? i dont have a clue what it means
the service name (also know as SID in 8.0) is the name of your database.
then select protocol for database you want to access?? again i have no idea
The common protocol for Oracle is TCP/IP
then a host name??
the host name (is the name of your computer or another computer you want to connect to with an Oracle database running on it).
1. To find the name of your computer, click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL
2. Open the Network Icon
3. Select the Identification tab
4. The name of your computer is listed
Good Luck,

Rpm details wanted for Solaris
Hi All,
I have rpm file for solaris. But when I do man rpm it says no manual entry. So how do I extract the package from the RPM file? Is there any rpm equivalent command in Solaris? My Solaris version is 5.9.Do I need to install relevant package for that?
Looking forward for your responseSolaris does not ship with RPM support, and most software for it is distributed in SVR4 pkg format, not RPM.
However, it's certainly possible to use RPM binaries and create a separate RPM repository. For a site that wants to manage all software with RPM, it could be useful.
You'll need to compile or obtain rpm binaries separately though.

Sun Studio 12 support for Solaris 10 3/05
The Sun Studio 12 http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/features/sysreq.jsp page mentions Solaris 9 and 10 1/06 are supported. Will Sun Studio 12 support Solaris 10 3/05 in the future?
Why is Solaris 10 3/05 not supported or at least a patch provided to allow Sun Studio 12 to support 3.05?I have done a poor job of explaining. The Sun Studio 12 Release Notes do specify Solaris 10 1/06. Read them. Why would Sun specify that release unless Solaris 10 3/05 was not supported? See http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/support/support_matrix.jsp and http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/documentation/ss12/release_notes.html#SystemReqs
Sun has gone to the trouble to list Solaris OS 9 and 10 1/06. It is not a matter of applying patches to become 10 1/06 from 3/05. It requires an upgrade. -

However, if you are already on Solaris 10, I'd recommend to upgrade to Sun Studio 12, which is free, has many improvements and works much better with Solaris 10. If you, for any reason, can't upgrade compilers to Studio 12, you can still use Sun Studio 12 IDE plus debugger and compilers from Studio 9. It is easy to install several versions of Sun Studio on a machine, you just need to give different base directories to the installer. -
Setting up a bridge for solaris 10
Hi,
I currently have a dual boot for on my desktop (Solaris 10 and WinXP). I'm currently looking for a way to get online while in solaris, my WinXP install is on a wireless network but it's almost impossible to find wireless drivers for solaris so i'm trying to use my ethernet capabilities.
I bought a wireless print server which has a bridge feature and i'm hoping to find some information on how to setup a bridge on my solaris install.
Any help or direction will help me a lot since I'm very new to solaris. Thank you in advanced.I have a similar issue but have not been able to get this solution to work.
I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n that is set up in bridge mode and connected to a DSL modem that assigns IP addresses.
I wish to use a remote Airport Express (late 2008) 802.11n to connect via ethernet to a PowerMac without wireless.
In summary I desire: DSL-ethernet-AirportExtreme-wireless-AirportExpress-ethernet-PowerMac
I have reset the Airport Express to factory defaults and then set to "Join wireless network" and checked allow Ethernet clients. The Airport Express gets an IP address but any number of Macs I have tried will not get an IP address in DHCP mode (except a self-assigned one). I have verified that the cable works: when I connect the Macs to the Airport Extreme base station, they all get an IP address. All versions of firmware are 7.4.1. I have also tried checking and unchecking "Allow this network to be extended" on the Airport Extreme.
Please help. Thanks -
Cross compiling apps on solaris 8 for solaris 10 x86 and x64
Hi All,
We have a few applications built on Solaris 8. and we want to build the same apps on Solaris 10 x86 and x64 but the problem is clearcase does not support Solaris 10 yet.
Can we cross compile the apps on Solaris 8 for Solaris 10 x86 and x64 ? and how ?
waiting for any info on this.
TIA,
warm regards,
GirishFYI, I noticed the reply on Sun Studio General Forum:
If you build an app on one version of Solaris, the app will run on later Solaris versions. So in particular, you can build an x86 application on Solaris 8 and run it on Solaris 9 and 10.
Unfortunately, an x64 application must be built on a Solaris x64 system, which first became available with Solaris 10. -

SUNWdsvh & SUNWdsvhx for Solaris 8 only?
Hi All -
I am installing Solaris packaged version of DS 5.2P4 via the JES method on a Sol10 server. I notice the JES4 will install the packages SUNWdsvh & SUNWdsvhx, however the documentation http://docs.sun.com/source/816-6697-10/install.html#23713 mentions this are only for Sol8 installations. I know the documentation above was created prior to DS 5.2 support on Sol10 - but the majority of the documentation is not updated for each release.
Are these packages only for Solaris 8 as the documentation mentions? If so - why would JES4 which knows the installation is taking place on a Sol10 host - install them?
Any ideas?
Thanks allThe short answer is generally no.
The long answer is that it can be done but you will need to make sure that on the Solaris 10 machine you only use functions/headers/libraries that are available on Solaris 8 otherwise they will not be found and the software won't work.

Need an download accelerator for Solaris 8 (Sparc)

[email protected]The download is available, but it isn't easy to find.
The "Sun Download Center Changes" page also refers to you to the Sun Archive (My Oracle Support Doc 1302856.1). Follow that link and you see a list of products you can download, including Sun Studio 11 (unaccountably listed under Servers and Storage Systems). That link takes you here

where you can download Sun Studio 11. The one download contains the releases for each platform. -
Need Sun WorkShop 6 update 2 for Solaris 8
Would it be possible to download an installation package for Sun WorkShop 6 update 2 for Solaris 8?
I have an old development project that I need to resurrect, and it requires this version of the Sun compiler.
Thanks,
-Ken CooleyObject files and libraries created by WS6u2 can be linked into programs created by later versions of Sun Studio. The default template model changed in Studio 8, so you might need to add -instances=extern to CC command lines. Apart from that possibility, the only other issue I can think of would be invalid code accepted by WS6u2 that SS11 does not accept. I suggest you give Studio 11 a try, unless company policy forbids it.
