Solar Powering a 17" MacBook Pro

Hello,
I'm attempting to solar power my 17" MacBook Pro while away tent camping.   I have a Brunton 52 Watt folding solar array, Brunton 12V DC-to-AC inverter, Solar controller, cigar plug cable for output from solar array.  The output from the solar aray in full sun is 24V DC.   I can lower the voltage to 14V if I cover up 2/3rds of the cells.
I've connected the DC side of the 12V inverter to the solar array and the AC side to the MacBook Pro power brick.  The inverter is between the solar array and the MBP.  With solar array in full sun and  connecting the three pieces, there is no AC power output from the inverter going to the MacBook Pro brick.  Can anyone answer why I have no 120V output from the AC side of the inverter to the MBP?
Thanks,
Peter

If you are going to use your MBP power adapter you are forced to do the DC to AC conversion and deal with the inherent power loss (10%-15%).
You need to calculate the real world output of the solar panels (not the advertised figures) and take into account that the amperage will fluctuate with weather conditions and panel orientation.
My guess is that you will need a minimum of 5 amp output (using 24 v output panels)  plus a fudge factor to take into account less than optimum conditions.  The good news is that more panels can be added if the need so requires.
Good luck.
Ciao.

Hi, when powering up my macbook pro, when the apple symbol appears the screen flashes pink, can anyone advise whats up?

You can try a system reinstall:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Does using two bus powered external devices MacBook Pro 13" put too much strain on the power supply?

Will daisy chaining two bus powered external devices put too much strain on my 2011 MacBook Pro 13" power supply?  Specifically I would like use ProTools with a LaCie bus powered hard disc and a Digidesign Mbox 2 Pro which is also bus powered with firewire.

    Hi rrlavigne,
The biggest difference between the two machines in maximum RAM capacity. The white MacBook is limited to 4GB, whereas the MacBook Pro will support 8GB of RAM. While the cost of RAM is prohibitory right now (to go to 8GB), to have that flexibility in the future will very much be worth it... especially considering you intend to install Logic.
Other than that, I think in terms of "raw performance" the machines are very equally matched. You're paying for the unibody design, backlight keyboard, SD card and new battery technology for that $200 premium (in addition to the slight CPU bump).

  • Most Powerful Processor for MacBook Pro 15''

I am going to buy a new MacBook Pro 15", and I plan on using for heavy H.264/HDV Video editing and rendering. Because of this I need a powerful computer. I was originally going to get the Intel Core i7, but I heard that since it is only Dual-Core, there are other more powerful processors I can buy seperately. Is this true? And if so what processor should I buy?
    -Thanks

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
the i7 MBP is the top one speedwise http://www.marketingtactics.com/Speedmark/
And no, there are no more powerful processor to be bought seperately since the processor is not upgradeable in a MAcBook Pro.

  • Powering up a macbook pro with an external monitor attached

I have a MacBook Pro and a new Apple 23" Cinema Display. How do I power up (not wake, I got that figured out already) the MBP with the external display attached?

AFAIK, you have to open the MBP's lid, hit the power button and then immediately close the lid. I don't believe there is any other way to do it.

  • Is the MacBook Air as powerful as the MacBook Pro?

I need a pretty powerful computer and it has to be apple because I need itunes for my job and I can only rely on itunes on a mac, but it has to run some pretty powerful software, so can an air handle it as well as a MBP with retina?

    No. Get a MBP.

  • Are non-Unibody Macbook Pros still viable for professional Photoshop/Lightroom work?

I currently own a late 2008 Macbook pro (the first unibody) model with a 2.4ghz core 2 duo processor, and I am looking for something similar to get my wife who works with as an upgrade to her crappy old laptop that crashes on her when she has more than a few DNGs open in Photoshop. I was wondering if the 2007/8 Non Unibody Higher End Macbook Pros are still viable for Photoshop/Lightroom work? I know that some of these models seem very old now, but she has a 2005 Windows Toshiba Laptop that can barely handle it's own operating system...so would a decently powered non-unibody Macbook Pro still be viable today or would she have just any many headaches when trying to multitask?
    Thanks, it's my first post!

Thank you everybody for all the replies!
First off, I think we'll wait what the 11th of june will bring us, hopefully a new mac mini. As Michael Wasley stated, the glossy imac screen isn't going to work for him. So that brings us to a Mac Mini or Macbook Pro. I'm using the macbook pro myself for the last couple of years and i'm a great fan of it's capabilities.. but my brother prefers a fixed 'computer' and not a laptop..
At this point i think he's going to buy (the new?) mac mini (and use his own screen), upgrade the RAM to somewhere between 12-16 GB, possible get a SSD drive and for sure get the biggest i7 processor available.
Hopefully that will get things running.
    Kind regards,
    Mark

  • MacBook Pro OS X Lion not rebooting

On powering up my MacBook Pro OS X Lion presents an Apple and a busy symbol, and fails to start.
My question is how can I resolve this?
I've tried the Apple disc utility which reports HD ok, not sure what to do next.

Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access the built in utilities to restore OS X using OS X Recovery.

  • MacBook Pro is having trouble booting

Hi, I recently installed Windows 7 to my MacBook Pro, only to find that the product key had already been used and it was an upgrade disc.. (I plan to buy my own copy soon). So I decided to remove the partition that contained Windows 7 to give my computer a "fresh", untouched feeling. This has created one issue:
When powering up my MacBook Pro, it now appears to still attempt to boot from Windows (I don't know why it set Windows as a default).. but since I removed Windows 7, it just displays a black screen that says the boot file could not be found and to insert the proper boot disc and press any key.
I can get around this by booting my Mac up and holding the option key to manually select the OSX hard disk, which is the only on to choose from.
So how can I get my MacBook back to normal? I'm not concerned about loading Windows 7 right now.
    Thanks in advance!

Open the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences, select your Mac OS install and click restart. This will set your Mac to always boot to the Mac OS partition.

  • 12" MacBook or retina MacBook pro?

I plan on purchasing either the retina MacBook pro or the MacBook next month. The MacBook is so elegant and sleek but I'm concerned about the processing specs. The retina MacBook pro on the other hand is the other way around. The specs look great but Im concerned that they will overhaul the rmbp and it will be outdated and clunky. I plan on using my computer for general web design.
Since both laptops come with 8 gigs of ram I feel like the MacBook should be able to handle what I throw at it. The rmbp has too many ports for me and is too thick and heavy, and comes with half the storage of the macbook. Is it worth it for the extra processing power? Or is the MacBook a go?
    Thanks in advance.

I would say get the macbook pro 13" if you for power and portability, 15" if you want better gaming performance or 3D modelling, manipulation or CAD design.
I myself have got a macbook Pro 13" to replace my lenovo 17" because I am an artist that mostly does drawing and 3D manipulation, which actually works better than my 2012 lenovo dedicated graphics laptop which was heavy as **** and killed my back, walking from home to the art studio and back. I am surprised that the intel Iris chipset does what I need it to do, though I wish Apple had a dedicated Nvidia graphics with the Iris like the 15" for the 13". The reason why I moved to 13" was all about portability, I can slip it in my hand bag, and the weight of the retina 13" does not kill my bad back like my lenovo did, and at home I connect it to my Mackbook Pro via HDMI  to HDTV and USB hub , and use it as a desktop, and on bootcamp, I can play Warframe with reasonable settings at resolution of my HDTV. or less depending on quality vs performance, I even played Alien Isolation with almost all High quality at my HDTV resolution . The Macbook pro is a good buy if you have portability and power in mind. I did have second thoughts before getting it since it was onboard graphics, but it has evolved since then. But if you wish to have full complete performance, you would have to sacrifice portability and get the 15" but also costs more, so you would need more money on hand. But still it is more lightweight than most regular 15" Power PC Laptops you get.
Had a look at this new Macbook, and I am not impressed with the functional specs. It looks beautifull... and it offers 3 selections of colour choices, but it is not as powerful as the Macbook Pro , the tablet CPU is the equivalent of an i3 , where the Macbook Pro has more powerful i5 and i7.
Its display is 12" and not 13" which is slightly bigger on the Macbook Pro.
It only has one port , a USB-C port, which makes it difficult to set up like a desktop/workstation at home/work , and only useful on the road. Whereas the Macbook Pro you have more ports , one for external display and another for USB hub for peripherals, such as scanner, blue ray, DVD, printer etc..
The magsafe is gone, so if you trip the wire, your Macbook would be sent flying across the room into a nearby wall, risking damage to the screen, whereas everything else would be ok as apple makes good metal bodies for laptops, and there are no moving parts inside. You charge it up with the USB-C, which makes it awkward if you wish to backup time machine on external HD , while watching Movies on your HDTV, and browsing the web while it is charging at the same time.
I think the design would have been practical if apple included wireless charging device with it.
You would need to get an Airport Time Capsule or , build up an old PC from scratch and connect it to home network with external USB drives to be file storage and backup system.  Using normal external HD, such as a Passport has become awkward.
The Macbook Pro also has SD slot.. Macbook does not.
It also has no Thunderbolt, which i thought was going to take over USB-C because its faster.

  • My 13" MacBook Pro freezes at startup

While using Firefox, my Macbook pro frooze about 2 days ago. The screen was only showing the multi-colour spinning circle.
Pressed [Command + Option + Esc] to force quit. No response
Pressed Power Button for 10 sec.Power OFF
Again Pressed Power Button, the MacBook Pro freezes at startup, the MAC makes the startup music, enters a white Screen and is stuck there. There is a light clicking noise continously heard.
    Followed instructions to RESET SMC.
    1. Power OFF.
    2. Press [Shift + CNT + OPT + Power Key] and release at same time.
    3. Power ON.
    There was no response.
Attempted multiple times to switch-ON and OFF MAC-Book. No response
Attempted RESET SMC multiple times. No response.
Then suddenly when I gave up, it unfreeze after 15 minutes and enters the login screen.
Did a normal shut-down and power up. It was OK.
Then, ran the Firefox in debug mode and disabled the plug-ins.
It was stable for a 2 hours.
Then again, got the spinning colour circle.
So, took it to the service center last afternoon here at North Point, Hong Kong. The engineer there instructed me to backup the hard-disk and recover the CD.
Brough the machine back to my home.
Since the spinning colour circle would not stop, powered OFF the device.
On POWER ON, the screen freeze. Just like the first time.
Tried RESET SMC, Nor esult. Left the device power-on for an hour. No result.
Then, inserted the recovery CD. Powered OFF the Macbook Pro. Powered ON  and pressed "C" immediately. No response. The CD is now stuck inside the MACBook Pro.
Still have the white Screen at Power-On.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It looks like your NVIDIA graphic is damaged. If you need your computer now, you can fix the computer downloading gfxCardStatus and selecting the option to use only the integrated graphic, so that kernel panic won't appear anymore. Note that you won't be able to use the NVIDIA graphic, so the graphic performance may be worse than with this graphic.
Of course, that's a temporary fix, because you should take the computer to an Apple Store as soon as possible to get the Mac repaired. As the NVIDIA graphic is not soldered, the repair won't be expensive

  • Messages from iPad not Synching with MacBook Pro when Powered Off

I have the new MacBook Pro (2 GHz, i7, purchased Feb 2014), 15" Retina running OSX 10.9.4.  I also had an iPad3 (Retina) but just upgraded to the new iPad Air 2 weeks ago.  I do not have an iPhone, but that's next.  I have used the same iCloud account for all devices.
    The issue:
Messages (or message conversations) that I have when using my iPad Air are not synching with the MacBook under certain conditions.
    1) If my MacBook is on, there is no issue. Messages between devices (whether being composed on the iPad or MacBook) synch instantly between devices.
    2) If my MacBook is sleeping, most (but I do not think all) messages sent from my iPad will synch with the MacBook when it wakes up from sleep.
    3) If my MacBook was powered off and I had message conversations using my iPad while the MacBook was off, these messages do not synch with my MacBook after I turn it back on.  BUT, this depends:
         a) if I power on the MacBook shortly after (5-10 min) I had the message conversation on the iPad, sometimes these messages on the iPad will synch with my MacBook after I power it on.
         b) If my MacBook was powered off for several hours after I had a message conversation on my iPad, and then I power on the MacBook, these conversations are not synching on the MacBook at all.
i.e Assume MacBook is powered off.  I have a message conversation on my iPad at 4:30 PM.  If I power on my MacBook at 4:35 PM, the message from my iPad synchs with the MacBook.  However, if I power on my MacBook say at 10 PM or the next day, then the message conversation I had on the iPad DOES NOT synch with my MacBook.
Confused?  So am I.  To complicate matters, I did not have these issues while I had my old iPad 3.  I only starting noticing it when I bought the new iPad Air two weeks ago.  I do not know if this is related.
Another issue:  SOME message conversations on my MacBook and iPad air now appear to get out of chronological order.  In fact, on my iPad air, I received a message at 10 AM (message A) and then had several other messages with this person throughout the day on my iPad (at 11 AM, and then 2 PM).  Later that evening around 10 PM, the original message (message A) was received again as a new message on my iPad (i.e. received a new message notification).  Now, message A appears out of order (it shows the timestamp of 10 AM, but it displays after the messages that came at 11 AM and 2 PM).  Since my MacBook was on, these messages synched with my MacBook, but were (and remain) in the proper chronological order.
Other iCloud apps (calendar, mail, FaceTime notifications, notes, keychain, Photo-stream etc. seem to be synching fine between devices).  One last observation, when I bought the iPad air and restored it from the backup I made from the old iPad 3, everything restored fine from the backup except for Calendar.  For whatever reason, some old calendar entries did not restore on the new iPad.
I have run a myriad of tests (sending messages to myself from both my new and old iPad (even created a new apple ID from the old iPad)) with my MacBook sleeping or powered off for varying amounts of time in order to provide the information above.  I also reinstalled the operating system on my MacBook but this did not resolve the issue.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would be extremely grateful. I have been in contact by phone with Apple support and have them baffled as well, but they are doing their best to help.
    Thanks,
    HankSTL
ps.  I may post to several communities so if you see this message in several communities, I am just trying to get the best coverage.

The same thing is happening to me.
