Solaris 10 01/06  liveupgrade  from Solaris 8

Hi all,
I have to upgrade a few SUN V100 and V210 from Solaris 8 >>> 10 01/06 in the next time.
Does someone know, if its possible to run liveupgrade therefore , and if such an update from 8 >>> 10 is possible at all?
... other ideas ?
Thanks for a comment

We are researching just such a thing now with Sun. If you have the partitions to devote to Solaris 10, then yes, Liveupgrade will work. I can't give details as we have not worked out the details but Sun has shown it too us.

  • Issues w/ LiveUpgrade from Solaris 10 x86 06/06 to 08/07 w/ SVMmetadevices

    Hello all...
I am trying to upgrade a system from Sol 10 x86 6/06 to 8/07. For this example, we'll assume the following:
    * The system has only 2 disks mirrored with SVM
    * There are 0 free slices/partitions
    * /, /usr, /var are separate slices/filesystems/mirrors
    * There are 6 metadbs on 50MB slices, three on each disk
I run the following lucreate command (after having made sure that the appropriate packages and patches exist on the system):
    lucreate -c s10u2 -n s10u4 -m /:/dev/md/dsk/d110:ufs,mirror -m /:/dev/dsk/c0d1s0:detach,attach,preserve \
    -m /usr:/dev/md/dsk/d120:ufs,mirror -m /usr:/dev/dsk/c0d1s3:detach,attach,preserve \
-m /var:/dev/md/dsk/d130:ufs,mirror -m /var:/dev/dsk/c0d1s4:detach,attach,preserveI can then run luupgrade and every indication leads me to believe that it worked. So, I activate the new BE and init 6 and attempt to boot to the new BE. The boot ends up failing citing that it cannot mount /usr. So, I can either reboot and lumount the filesystems or boot into failsafe mode and take a look at the vfstab. The /etc/vfstab looks fine with the new metadevices identified as the /, /usr, and /var filesystems. However, those metadevices are never initialized. When I look at /etc/lvm/md.cf on the source BE, those metadevices are initialized there. However, they are not initialized in the secondary BE.
Am I missing something somewhere? Wondering why SVM does not appear to be updated on the secondary BE to add/initialize the new metadevices in the secondary BE.
    TIA,
    Rick

    Ok...update...
I have found that there are bugs with LU where it relates to SVM mirrored /'s and what not. So, I modified my approach to the upgrade and "deconfigured" the /, /usr, and /var mirrors. I then executed the the procedure as described in the docs to create a new boot environment on the secondary disk. It worked!
Great! With that done, I can then remove the old boot environment and remirror the /, /usr, and /var filesystems as it was prior to the LU procedure. Wrong answer! There were two problems, the first was fairly simple to overcome....
Problem 1) When attempting to delete the old BE, I would get the following error:
The boot environment <s10u2> contains the GRUB menu.
Attempting to relocate the GRUB menu.
    /usr/sbin/ludelete: lulib_relocate_grub_slice: not found
ERROR: Cannot relocate the GRUB menu in the boot environment <s10u2>.
ERROR: Cannot delete the boot environment <s10u2>.
Unable to delete boot environment.Through some Googling, I found that apparently, the Solaris 10 LiveUpgrade is attempting to use a function in /usr/lib/lu/lulib that only exists in OpenSolaris (whatever happened to backporting functionality?). Ok...easy enough. Backup the library and copy it over from an OpenSolaris box. Done...and it worked, but only led to problem #2...
Problem 2) Now when I run ludelete on the old BE, I get the following error:
The boot environment <s10u2> contains the GTRUB menu.
Attempting to relocte the GRUB menu.
ERROR: No suitable candidate slice for GRUB menu on boot disk: </dev/rdsk/c0d0p0>
INFORMATION: You will need to create a new Live Upgrade boot environment on the boot disk to find a new candidate for the grub menu.
ERROR: Cannot relocate the GRUB menu in boot environment <s10u2>.
Unable to delete boot environment.I have attempted to manually move/install GRUB on the secondary disk and make it the active boot disk, all to no avail. ludelete returns the same error every time.
    Thoughts? Ideas?
    TIA,
    Rick

  • Best practise for zone ZFS backups

We have an M5000 server that will eventually have at least 40 zones configured. The zone root and data files will be on ZFS. There is a requirement to run daily and weekly backups. We also have Netbackup as an enterprise backup system.
My plan was to run daily zfs snapshots and to weekly "send" the snapshot to disk to be picked up by Netbackup.
Questions have been raised over the possible disk performance hit of keeping 7 snapshots per filesystem online. Has anyone experienced this or can suggest an alternative backup procedure?
    Thanks.

You should be aware that using zones on zfs currently prevents liveupgrade from being used.
So it will make future patching trickier.

You may want to check out:

It describes that if the application comforms to
Solaris ABI (Application Binary Interfaces), then
upgrade to next release should not affect the

As non-related info, you may want to check out:

  • Mounting a Solaris x86 CD/DVD from a remote Windows CD/DVD-ROM drive

    Greetings, all.
Is it possible to mount a remote Windows CD/DVD-ROM drive? I have the Solaris 10x86 Companion Software DVD sitting in a CD/DVD-ROM drive that's installed on a Windows server on my network. It is shared-out (F:) and the two servers can ping each other. I've also confirmed the NFS services/daemons are running on the Solaris x86 machine. I've tried the following variations but, all have failed to produce successful results:
    # mount -F nfs x.x.x.x:/f /mnt
nfs mount: x.x.x.x: : RPC: Program not registered
    nfs mount: retrying: /mnt
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/f /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/f
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/F /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/F
[FYI: S10_106_SOFTWARE is the DVD's label as reported by Windows Explorer.]
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/S10_106_SOFTWARE /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/S10_106_SOFTWARE
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/s10_106_software /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/s10_106_software
    # mount -F nfs x.x.x.x:/S10_106_SOFTWARE /mnt
nfs mount: x.x.x.x: : RPC: Program not registered
    nfs mount: retrying: /mnt
    # mount -F nfs x.x.x.x:/s10_106_software /mnt
nfs mount: x.x.x.x: : RPC: Program not registered

    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/f/s10_106_software /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/f/s10_106_software
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/F/s10_106_software /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/F/s10_106_software
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/f/S10_106_SOFTWARE /mnt
    mount: No such device

    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/F/S10_106_SOFTWARE
I've also tried mounting it at bootup by adding the appropriate entry in the /etc/vfstab file but, this does not work as well. I've tried Google'ing for an answer to my issue but, I haven't been able to find anything that applies directly to what I'm reporting. It's usually chatter about mounting from one UNIX server to another. Any advice from the community would be greatly appreciated.

After three weeks, you deserve a reply. Windoze does
not natively support NFS.Also deserves a decent answer...
There are two ways to do this:
Install Microsoft's free "Windows Services for UNIX," which includes a Windows NFS server; or
Install the 'sharity' package (google for it); it provides Solaris systems the ability to mount Windows shares

    2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?
As we know that ZFS is the default filesystem in Solaris 11.
We have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
    - A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
    - Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
    - ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
    - In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.
I have seen the solution that using format -e, we change the labelling but all the data will be lost, whats the way to apply a SMI Label/Format on a rpool disks while OS Installation itself.
Please provide me the steps to SMI Label a disk while installaing Solaris 11.1 OS.

Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)

  • Print to windows remote printer from solaris Please help

    Hi,
I basically have 2 machines that are networked ( a solaris 9 sparc machine & a windows machine) The epson C42UX is on the Windows XP machine. I have samba set up on the Unix machine and can succesfully access solaris folders from the my network places folder in windows. My problem is that I want to print documents from my unix machine through the windows printer?
How would I go about doing this, I have searched the documentation for months and all I have come up with is lots of different ways of doing this none of which seem to work? Most of the methods refer to ancient equipment :-)
Also my Epson C42UX is connected to a USB port on windows USB0001 I think. Even if anyone could give me any links to a complete tutorial! I even have 2 samba books which mention about printer setup then conviently assume you no the most difficult parts.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated
iVE been at this for months ........I am starting to see why windows does so well

  • How to prevent a solaris user to telnet from multiple computers

    Hello,
How to prevent Solaris users to telnet from multiple computers? They should be able to telnet from only one PC.
    Please help..

ora_tech have a good point, i was about to suggest ipfilter, which is a built-in-firewall in Solaris, but using tcp wrappers would probably be easier. It all depends on which level of security you want (blocking the telnet requests in a firewall would generally be safer than blocking them at the tcp wrapper level, since its prevents some processing).
Since Solaris 10 you can also easily enable tcp wrappers on the inetd services with inetadm, see:
    http://blogs.sun.com/gbrunett/entry/tcp_wrappers_on_solaris_10

Just updated the latest Epson software printer update from Apple. Now all my prints look solarized. How do I get rid of the new update and go back to the perfect prints I had before? Help please. Wasting ink and paper at the moment!!!!!!
I have tried the printer with my laptop (not updated) and everything is fine. It's just the beautiful 27" Imac that can no longer print.

Might be a corrupted printer preference file ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    ~/Library/Preferences
    Click Go
Move the com.apple.PrinterPrefs.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac, restart the printer...

  • How to add drive space from one drive to another drive in Solaris 10

This is something I have never done in Solaris. I have a mounted drive (UFS) with a dir being used for a samba share. The dir is near full. I have another drive right beside it that is empty.
    1. How can I add the drive space from the empty drive to the dir or drive that is nearly full? I have to access all files on both drives from the samba share.
    2. Can I do this without loosing files?
    3. Can I do this without messing up the samba share?
    4. Can this be done on the fly without re-boot?
    Thanks in advance.

I would start by getting acquainted with ZFS.
Make sure you have a recent Solaris 10 version with a stable zfs impl. like u4 and later.
Make sure you have installed reasonably recent Solaris 10 recommended patches - they make a big difference to ZFS.
    Simple solution :
    * put your new drive in a zpool
    # zpool create smbpool <new_drive_device, fx. c0t1d0>
    * make a zfs
    # zfs create smbpool/smbfs
    * stop your samba server
    # svcadm stop smb ?
    * copy your files to your zfs fssmb_ufs=old samba fs
    # cp -rp <old_samba_fs> /pools/smbpool/smbfs
    * un-mount and say goodbye to your old samba fs - /wave
    # umount <old_samba_fs>
    * expand your zpool with the old samba server fs partition
    # zpool add smbpool <device name for old samba slice, fx. c0t0d0s6>
    * move your zfs fs to be mounted on the same mount points as the old samba server fs
    # zfs set mountpoint=<old_samba_mountpoint> smbpool/smbfs
    * restart your samba server
    # svcadm start smb ?
It requires downtime for the samba server to copy the files, which could be cut shorter by using rsync, rsyncing while samba server online, stop samba server, rsync again for the changes while the first rsync ran.

  • App crash when using JAVA callbacks from native threads in solaris

    Hi all,
Sorry for putting the thread here. I did use the native methods forum, I wasnt lucky. I Hope more people would look into this forum, which brings me here.
I have a solaris application which crashes when I try to callback the JAVA methods and variables from the native code. The description of the problem is below
Written a native library, the library is multithreaded (i.e) I create a thread using pthread_create() in the native code which performs the operation of calling a JAVA method from the native code. The routine of calling the JAVA method works perfectly elsewhere outside the new thread.
There are two scenarios I've tested it in
    1. I created a thread (say X) from the main thread (say Y) and made the y to wait until the X is complete using the pthread_join(). The JAVA callbacks works fine when called from Y but the app crashes if done from X.
    2. Did not make the Y to wait until the X is complete, hoping that both will run paralelly and even the the App crashes.
And to be precise the Y is the thread where the native method is called from JAVA.
I have tested for any memory leaks or stack corruption by removing the JAVA callbacks and bulding a executable and using purify, the report doesnot hint any such occurances.
The linker options used for building the shared library is as follows
    ${GPP} ${INC} -G ${LIB} -mt -g -lCstd -lCrun -lpthread ${OBJS} -o <lib-name>
I wonder if we can create threads in the native code when using JAVA callbacks and even if we can whether it would be appropiate to use the callbacks with in the threads
    Looking forward for any help.
    Regards,
    Vamsi

I tried to debug the problem by looking at system properties on windows and solaris,
the difference that I found was
    On Windows
    [exec] tModelInstanceInfo_description : com.sun.net.ssl.internal.www.protocol
    On Solaris
    [exec] tModelInstanceInfo_description : weblogic.utils|weblogic.tils|weblogic.net|weblogic.management
After this I changed the startWLS.sh on Solaris and set
    -Djava.protocol.handler.pkgs=com.sun.net.ssl.internal.www.protocol in java options.
On looking the system properties again, the output was
    [exec] tModelInstanceInfo_description : com.sun.net.ssl.internal.www.protocol|weblogic.utils|weblogic.utils|weblogic.net|weblogic.management
But still the error is same. Can somebody help me out here as to what is going
wrong? Please find the java class attached for reference, please have a look at
postXMLtoLloyd() method in the class file..
    [LloydsValidator.java]

We are using Http Utility (http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/httpclient/) from
Apache for accessing external URL. A XML string is sent as POST parameter to the
URL and the response is also an XML string. The URL is accessed over HTTPS protocol.
I am setting the following parameters in the java class:
    Security.addProvider(new com.sun.net.ssl.internal.ssl.Provider());
    // set the property
    System.setProperty("java.protocol.handler.pkgs","com.sun.net.ssl.internal.www.protocol");
The java class written to access the external URL using Http Utility works perfectly
fine when it is run from either the command line (of Windows or Solaris using
main() ) or from weblogic on windows. The same java class throws an exception
when run from Solaris instance of Weblogic

  • Pen Drive is not detected from my Solaris OS

    Hello,
from my Solaris 10 OS my pen drive is undetected .Please help how to detect my pen drive .
The configuration of my system :
    1) Solaris 10
    Q) The OS is installed using VirtualBox , Host machine is Windows 7 ?
    Q) My pen drive is working with other OS like Windows 7 .

Thanks. Have you configured the Solaris Virtual Machine to allow USB Passthrough? ie: are you allowing the guest to see USB devices or is USB disabled? See https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html#idp11184832 for how to configure this.
If you can see other USB devices in Solaris, such as portable or desktop hard drives, then it could be an incompatibility between Solaris and the USB drive itself. Solaris doesn't support all usb drives/pens.
