Solaris 10 08/06 version container  within Solaris 10 05/08 global zone

I have the need to run Solaris 8 , Solaris 9 and even Solaris 10 (08/06) containers within my Solaris 10 05/08 global T5120. No problem with the branded Solaris 8 nad Solaris9, but I'm not sure how to create a native Solaris 10 (older version 06) to run on the newer version Solaris 10 05/08. Do I have to create the global zone with the older 06 version of Sol 10? hmm?

The minimum supported version for a 5120 is Solaris 10 8/07.
And they wouldnt say that without a good reason.
Its pretty silly of a software vendor to specify a particular version of Solaris 10.
Unless they mean that version or later.
I mean suppose its certifed for Solaris 10 8/06 and you start with that.
Then you run smpatch and apply all available patches.
What you end up with is virtually indistinguishable from Solaris 10 5/08 anyway.
So unless, they certify a specific version and also specify the set of patches you are allowed to apply.
Then the restriction is virtually meaningless.
Personally I suggest you just go with Solaris 5/08 and be done with it.
As far as I know, theres no way for you to use the "earlier" version without buying new hardware.
The closest you could come is to run it on a solaris 9 zone.

  • StarOffice8 Solaris 10 sparc: how to install only in the global zone?

    hello all,
i have installed SO8 on T2000 Solaris 10 according this doc:
    [http://notallmicrosoft.blogspot.com/2005/10/installing-staroffice-8-on-solaris-nfs.html|http://notallmicrosoft.blogspot.com/2005/10/installing-staroffice-8-on-solaris-nfs.html]
everyhing works fine except that now, i have to setup zones on my nfs server, and because the staroffice installer isn't aware of zones, and doesn't permit to do:
    pkgadd -G ...
all the zones created are very big due to staroffice (800Mb instead of 100Mb!)
so i tried the following method:
    - launch the installer so-8-ga-bin-solsparc-en-US_fr.sh without DISPLAY for example
    - go into /var/tmp/unpack_staroffice/packages
    - install all the packages manually:
pkgadd -G -d . SUNWstaroffice-* (this method is already used by OpenOffice!)
This method works well if i use soffice on the nfs server.
But on nfs client, that mount /opt/staroffice8, i got this error:
    mimosa-henry% soffice
    The application cannot be started.
The component manager is not available. How can i deal with it? Is it possible to modify some scripts to add "-G" option to pkgadd without breaking the installation? What is the component manager? What package is concerned?
    Thanks in advance for help,

Are you trying to install Solaris 9 onto a server that is already running Windows XP and to keep Windows XP too?
You'll need to create a partition on which to install Solaris, - search for Solaris Windows Dual Boot on docs.sun.com for more information.

10r R2 is not available for Solaris 10 x86 (projected certification is the first half of this year), so there won't be an Express Edition until sometime after that.

  • Is "version" broken in Solaris Studio 12.2?

With 12.1, the "{Studio install path}/bin/version" command, when run with no arguments, produces output indicating that Sun Studio 12.1 is installed. With 12.2, there is no output that a script could use to determine which version of Studio is installed. It seems that when verison is invoked with no arguments, it attempts to read from the directory {Studio install path}/inventory. Our 12.1 installation has this directory, but it is not present in our 12.2 installation.
Does anyone have a Studio 12.2 installation on Solaris 10 that does include an inventory directory?

Nik - thanks for confirming that we aren't alone in seeing this behavior.
Chris, thanks for explaining that this is the behavior that we should expect. I spent several hours considering if something might have gone wrong during the installation of Solaris Studio. My colleague who actually performed the installation will likely be almost as gratified as I am to review your explanation.
By way of feeback, I would like to offer the following comments.
    1) It's regrettable that this functionality was removed without any sort of deprecation notice (at least, none that I could find, and I looked pretty hard). My colleagues and I spent several hours wondering what we did wrong since this wasn't working. Truss shows that the 12.2 bin/version tool still looks for the "inventory" directory and so the fact that it was missing suggested to me that something might have gone wrong with our installation.
    2) While the alternative pkginfo command you suggest is, as you described it, "parsable by humans", it's not especially script-friendly. A build script that only has the simple task of warning that you are using an unsupported older version of the Solaris Studio requires many lines of new logic to deal with this change, and one that has the more complex task of choosing different compiler args depending on the version of Sun/Solaris Studio that is being used really has to work overtime just to accommodate the inconsistent methods of identifying which version is in use.
    3) It would be really nice if there was some simple, script-friendly, way to discover what version is in use, and if that method was consistently supported from one release to the next, and if that method reported version numbers in ways that lend themselves to interpreation by scripts. I'm sure that there's some korn guru out there who can write one line of korn-shell code that will be able to conclude that pkginfo's value of "SPRO-12u2-cc" is greater than the 12.1 version's report of "Sun Studio 12 update 1", but I'm a "C" guy, not a script guru, so I wind up with a paragraph of korn shell code to pull this off. Can't we just have some program or (ideally) cc argument that spits out a string like "12.2"? It would be espeically sweet if it could do this on the first line of output (or even just a consistent offset from the first line).
Sorry for the rant, I really do appreciate your explanation, and I hope my comments have not offended you.

  • Solaris 8 Container in Solaris 10 Zone

    Hi All,
one of our customers wants to run Solaris 8 with Oracle 8.1.7 in a BrandZ Zone. Does anybody have an idea about how stable Solaris 8 is in a Zone environment? Are there any known issues with Solaris 8 running in a Zone?
Since Solaris 8 is EndOfShipment, are there chances to get up-to-date Sun Hardware bundled with Solaris 8 apart of using Solaris 10 Zones?
    Thanks in Advace,
    Dog

i didnt however i wasnt hammering it. if the load was expected to be high i would have done the io layout diff (try and follow some of oracles ideas: SAME for one, if possible).
some depends on the load and the load from the other zones. you can use allocate resource limits to give more priority to more important zones or make sure you have enough resources to start. what type of load are you expecting?

  • How can I access a specific font face contained within a TTF font file?

I want to access "Avenir Medium", which is one of 12 faces contained within the font file named "Avenir.ttf".
CSS allows me to specify the font file (src:...), the family name (fontFamily), and the weight (fontWeight).
The file, of course, is the same for every face within the TTF file, so that doesn't help.
The family is Avenir. Am I supposed to use some version of "Avenir Medium" in the fontFamily param? Nothing I've tried has worked.
The weight is Medium, but that is not an option for the CSS param fontWeight, so this does not seem to be the way to do it.
In Photoshop the font is accessed via the Family pull-down (Avenir) and the Syle pull-down (Medium).
I have not found a way to split the TTF file into separate files for each face, though that would seem to be the simplest solution.

Use this converter to convert ttc to ttf

  • PHP in Solaris 10 and Non-Global Zones: Problem of performance?

    Hi friends
We are feeling a poor performance with applications developed with PHP in Solaris 10, with non-global and global zones, while Intel platform (Xeon and Pentium), performance is very good. Difference between both platforms is about 200% aprox, one second in Intel to 9, 12 or 20 seconds in Solaris depending of model.
    Our tests were developed in:
    1. SF T2000 server Solaris 10 global zone
    2. SF T2000 server Solaris 10 non-global zone
    3. SF280R server Solaris 10 non-global zone

    5. V240 server with 8GB memory, 2*US III-i 1.5Ghz and Solaris 9 (really this version for test and comparisons too)
    Intel platforms were:
    1. Intel Pentium 4 2GHz 2GB memory, Linux Fedora and PHP 4.4.4
    2. Intel Xeon 2 core, 2.33GHz 2GB memory, Linux Fedora and PHP 4.4.3

    2. PHP 4.4.7 downloaded from http://www.php.net/downloads.php
    3. Apache 2.0.59

    Questions:
Is there any problem of PHP with SunFire T2000 servers or 64-bits platforms?
Is there any flag of PHP would be use to compilarion PHP in 64-bits or multithread?
I wait for any comments or suggestions about our problem with PHP compilation and performance in Solaris 10. Thanks a lot.
    Sergio.

I presume you compiled php on the Sun server, was this done using gcc or the Sun One C compiler.
If the latter then you can also use the flag: --enable-nonportable-atomics when you run configure

  • Oracle RAC 10g on Solaris 10 in a non-global zone

I need to run Oracle RAC 10g on Solaris 10 in a non-global zone as I must cap the CPUs used for Oracle licensing limitations. My question is a simple one, but one for which I'm getting conflicting information depending upon whom I ask.
If I want to run RAC in a non-global zone on two nodes, does this require the use of Solaris Cluster?
I know there are good reasons to use Solaris Cluster, but the company for which I work cannot afford the additional expense of Solaris Cluster at this time. Is it possible to run Oracle RAC 10g in a capped container without Solaris Cluster or is Solaris Cluster absolutely required?
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

AFAIK, Oracle 10g RAC is not supported in solaris containers.
It is however supported in Solaris zone clusters...in order to use it, you would have to use Sun Cluster 3.2 (iinm).

  • Jdk 1.6 + solaris 10 (global + non global zones)

How to execute or fetch jdk1.6 in global zone when it is installed in the non global zone of solaris 10?
    kindly explain in step-by-step procedure
    thanks,
    Samojit

I have a similar problem with pkgadd. When installing an auditing application we get the following error:
“pkagadd: ERROR: unable to make temporary directory </var/tmp//installtEaBs/install9_aG1u>
No changes were made to the system.”
This is a package that is being installed remotely using an automated process and the package does install using the pkgadd command on the server. The automation has produced the same or a similar error on several servers while producing no errors and successfully installing on others. We cannot duplicate the error across the board. The packge has been reviewed and has been found to have no errors, the automation process has been evaluated and has done successful jobs on other Solaris 10 servers since failing on the ones with this error. The exact same automated job produces successful and unsuccessful jobs on various servers.
There are 2 patch levels that we have identified 118833-26 and 118833-30. Both the 26 and 30 versions have had successful and unsuccessful installations of the SE agent. There are various subnets involved and all of them have had successful and unsuccessful installations of the SE agent.
If anyone out there has run into this problem before please help me out. This installation is automated on many Solaris 10 servers, and is successful on about 2 out of 3. It is of course the failed jobs that I have to focus on, until we can get it resolved.
