  • Solaris 10 for x88 install issue: cannot start X11 server

AFter fixing my "can't set locale" problem I am moving onto the "Server for display :0 can't be started" issue.
    Checking /etc/dtc/Xerrors yields:
    1) error (PID 380) : Server unexpectedly died
    2) error (PID 380) : Server for display :0 can't be started
I've tried running kdmconfig and setting XSun not XOrg. I am using a 2 channel KVM with a 3 button mouse (the only PS2 mouse I have lying around...) but it seems to pick it up without any problems. But, editing the config and saving (F4...) doesn't work. The changes don't commit and running kdmconfig again I see the choices have not changed.
Also, I notice this message when I try to boot up:
svccfg (/tmp/kdm_svccfg_cmds, ;ine 1): Pattern 'application/x11/x11-server' doesn't match any instances or services.

  • Solaris 10 x86 Install - Firewire Issue

    Greetings,
I am installing Solaris 10 x86 (03/05) and am running into a lot of trouble with the firewire drivers.
The first CD installs properly, but any subsequent reboot (to install other CDs or boot the OS) fails. By watching the boot messages on a boot -v, I discovered that the system hangs after loading the firewire drivers.
If I run the hardware configuration assistant during boot and remove both 1394 devices, I am allowed to boot - but only that once. Even if I save the hardware configuration and tell the hardware configuration tool to use it during the next boot (by pressing Esc and loading the profile), it automatically re-adds my 1394 devices and hangs. The only way I can successfully boot is by going into the hardware configuration assistant each time and removing the 1394 devices, each time. Removing the 1394 card is not an option, as this system boots other OSes for computer forensics via removable disk racks and the firewire is needed for these purposes.
So, my question is this - how can I tell Solaris to ignore the 1394 devices without manually removing them during each boot? And how can I get the hardware configuration assistant (the one that I launch by pressing Esc during the boot process) to actually use the configurations I've saved?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what the root cause for the firewire driver hang is.
Maybe an issue with interrupt routing. You may want to experiment
with BIOS ACPI / IOAPIC / PnP OS settings, and/or the
    acpi-user-options property.
Anyway, to get rid of the firewire driver, you can probably add an
"exclude: hci1394" line to /etc/system and reboot.

  • New to Solaris, Some Samba and NTFS issues.

Hi Im new to solaris and trying out ZFS which has been great.
Im haivng some trouble that I cant find up to date info on so here goes:
First how do you mount an NTFS volume in Solaris 11 Express?
I need to access the data on an NTFS drive to populate my new ZFS tank.
Secondly, I have read only access on my samba shares from windows machines but my smb.conf looks right. a copy of my smb.conf will follow
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

The rtc command is used to set the real time (bios) clock. It should have no effect on the running clock.
as i configured the /etc/TIMEZONE, i couldnt run the rtc command and figured that it is for X86
what is the alternative on SPARC?There is no alternative. x86 has a tradition of running the BIOS clock in local time. The rtc program allows you to continue doing that, which is handy if you multi-boot with other operating systems that require that setting (such as windows). As such, the rtc clock needs to be reset when local time changes (usually associated with daylight saving or summer time). If you do not multi-boot with windows, you may wish to set the bios clock to UTC. It makes certain things easier.
SPARC systems do not multi-boot windows, and the onboard nvram clock always runs in UTC. So the rtc command is not needed.

  • Solaris 10 x86 and ethernet issue

I am running a Gigabyte 7NF-RZ mobo (nVIDIA chipset) with an onboard LAN. I installed the x86 version of Solaris 10 and it does not see the ethernet. So, I have two questions:
    1) Is there a driver available for this and if so, where do I find it?
    2) If I have to use a PCI ethernet card, which ones work with x86? I have check the HCL list and only Sun cards are certified. There are lots of other that are "reported" to work but I really don't want to have to buy several cards and experiment.
    TIA
    Bill W

The old 3-Com 905B series is a safe bet. It's supported and Solaris comes with the driver(elxl) out of the box.

  • Solaris 10 6/06 Installing Issues

    Hi all,
I've downloaded and concatenated the five Solaris 10 Sparc files, the MD5 checksums on the 5 individual parts check out and so does the DVD ISO created with 'copy /b part1 + part2 + part3 + part4 + part5 sol10.iso.
I've burnt the image with Roxio CD Create, that came out fine, but I cannot boot the server:
    Short read. 0x0 chars read.
    Panic-boot: could not mount filesystem
    Program terminated.
The 420R has a Toshiba 1401 DVD drive with the latest firmware patch applied (1009). Patch 111649-04 was also applied.
I was able to boot from a Solaris 9 August/03 DVD Rom, so I'm sure the hardware isn't at fault here.
Prior to today, I was trying to do the same with Solaris 10 Jan/06, but without luck either. The five files downloaded, once checksummed, matched up with those posted at this site:
    http://www.whacked.net/2005/12/22/solaris-10-update-1-s10u1-md5-sums/
but the order of files and checksums was incorrect. The checksums were correct, but possibly the parts were labelled incorectly - for example, part a matched with part b's checksum, part c's matched with part a.
Thoughts or suggestions on what I could be doing wrong?
    Thanks.

Unfortunately, there is a "feature" with the Toshiba 1401 DVD drives. See http://swforum.sun.com/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=82689&messageID=339722#339722

  • Solaris 10 Raid 1 format issues

The operating system comes with software to enable software raid, its called SDS - solaris disk suite. The main thing to get your head around is that you create raid volumes from slices rather than disks, which makes the setup more flexible, but also more complicated. In addition to this, you have the ability to also create multi-way mirrors, as well as assigning disks to a Hot Spare Pool.

According to Stroustrup (C++ Programming Language 4th Edition, pg 45) the following code is C++11 compliant.
    I'm compiling with option -std=c++11.

You have run into bug 18780089 - failure for initializer list in range-based for loop.

  • Solaris 2.5.1 installation issue

I was trying to install Oracle 8.1.6 Client package on a SUN Sparc-station 5, to allow my apps to talk to a remote Oracle server.
During the linking phase for Oracle 8i Client component, the installation window threw up this error message:
Error in invoking target install of makefile /misc/oracle/product/8.1.6//network/lib/ins_net_client.mk
Has anyone encountered this before? Or can anyone please advise me on what the potential problem is?
    Thanks.

When the keyboard is disconnected...display automatically goes to the serial port. If your keyboard is connected, reboot and make sure you have a video card installed. The onboard one may not have the vsimm(video memory) option, in which case you will have to get memory for it(very, very expensive) or get a separate sbus video card(these can be had very cheap on ebay). Let us know how it works out for you.

  • Solaris 7 to 8 Upgrade with Oracle 8.1.5 (opinions and issues to note)

    Hi all,
Think the subject says it all..
I have a Solaris 7 server running on Sparc E250 with Oracle8.1.5 on it. It shows that it s a 64bit system when booting up and it uses normal Solaris filesystem setup (no RAID on it) .
If I were to upgrade it to Solaris 8, what are the issues I need to take note.
    Thanks.
    Ld

This could be a big headache....but if there is a need to upgrade your OS from 7 to 8
then you should be ready for a good backup plan....meaning, if something goes wrong at any
point in the process, you could easily revert back to your old system environment.
If I were the one to do this, I will do the following.
    1) I will make use of mirroring. It will be good if you could do it for the entire filesystem
of your OS and your DB.
    2) Once I have a mirror, I will simply detach the other mirror and do my upgrade.
Anything goes wrong, I will simply make use of the other mirror to have my old system back.
When you upgrade your OS from 7 to 8, I had seen lots of problem where it could not complete the
process. And the reason is the size of the Filesystem for Solaris 8 specially the root requires
a big size as to any previous version. i usually just install from scratch. But the problem is if
your filesystem for the OS and Applications like your DB are crossing each other then you may have
to rebuilt your Applications too. Unless you had partition them such that they are totally separated.
When you had succesfully installed your Solaris 8, then your next headache is to make sure
all your applicatiions including your DB will be running fine with the new OS. Usually they
would not as they may need to be patched. So that means you have to check the Oracle websites
as for what are the patches needed to make your Oracle runs properlly in the new OS.
Most important is your backup plan, which is your mirrored-disk of your running environment.
Also you have to make a Plan of everything. Doing this will really take a lot of time.
Good luck. I have done this before.....I'm pretty sure you could do it.
just remember , your back-up plan should always be available anytime.

  • Performance issue while opening the report

    HI,
I am working BO XI R3.1.there is performance issue while opening the report in BO Solris Server but  on window server it is compratively fast.
we have few reports which contains 5 fixed prompt 7 optional prompt.
out of 5 fixed prompt 3 prompt is static (it contains 3 -4 record only )which is coming from materlied view.
we have already use many thing for improve performance in report like-
    1) Index Awareness
    2) Aggregate Awareness
    3) Array fatch size-250
    3) Aray bind time -32767
    4) Login time out -600
the issue is that before refresh opening the report iteslf taking time 1.30 min on BO solris server but same report taking time in BO window server 45 sec. even we  import on others BO solris server it is taking same time as per old solris server(1.30 min).
when we close the trace in solris server than it is taking 1.15  sec time.it should not be intial phase it is not hitting more on database.so why it is taking that much time while opening the report.
could you please guide us where exectly problem is there and how we can improve performance for opening the report. In case the problem related to solris server so what would be and how can we rectify.
Incase any further input require for the same feel free to ask me.

    Hi Kumar,
If this is happening with all the reports then this issue seems to be due to firewall or security settings of Solaris OS.
Please try to lower down the security level in solaris and test for the issue.
