Solaris 10 b69 on VIA EPIA motherboards?

Has anyone had success in getting Solaris 10 beta69 to boot on VIA EPIA (C3 CPU-based) motherboards?
I've got two mini-ITX systems here built around VIA EPIA M10000 motherboards (C3 @ 1Ghz). One has 1G RAM, one has 256M. Both have Hitachi/IBM 80G IDE hard drives and generic CD-ROM drives.
On both systems, S10 starts to boot, but hangs (permanently; I've let it sit overnight) right after the kernel spits out the copyright message and version.
Any suggestions?

I get the same behaviour with a Via CM266 motherboard with C3 1Ghz Ezra CPU. 768M of memory, using third party rh driver since b7 doesn't support Rhine natively.
Using the -v option I get to either loading the mmu32 module or just after the copyright lines and then the box hang's solid.
The first week I was working with b7 I was able to boot about 1/3 of the time and the box ran GREAT once I added a cheapo ATI card, the S3 graphics are ungrok'd by X server, and a third party driver for the Rhine II ethernet controller.
Its VERY frustrating since I just started to putts with dtrace and I can't get it to boot again!!!
NetBSD and Fedora core 3 run fine on the system; partition 0 and 1 respectively. Its only Solaris I can't get to run. B^(.

But then when it starts loading the kernel (no matter which install option I choose) as it passes controll to the kernel which may just get to
print out the first line I can be sure as thats when the mahine resets (clearing the screen!!) and starts to load the bios again!!!!

But untill then I have the PD versions. Has ANYONE got this to start up and install, I have founf ethernet drivers and a CLE266 screen acc for the X11 (xfree, but I think will work on X.org too) but just can't get it to install!!!!
If you have WHICH via board are you using and which Solaris build? I think this could be an amazing set of kit for Solaris to run on..... i

I have a Via CM266 Motherboard with a Via C3 1GHz CPU, Ezra not Nemih. I added a cheapo ATI video card since nothing but the newest Linux can grok the S3 Ultrachrome builtin video. B^(.
For the first week I could get Beta 7 to boot about 30% of the time, now it just hangs after loading in the mmu32 module; I haven't tried the -kv boot option yet.
When it DID load it ran GREAT! I had to get the third party driver for the builtin ethernet tho; Google for Solaris x86 ether drivers and use the rh driver on the guys web site; I hope Sun picks his drivers or equiv. for general release! Anyways, third party ether driver worked great.
I hope you get it running on your EPIA board, Solaris 10 IS slick for these mATX boards once it does get running!

Installing Solaris 10 on VIA EPIA PE10000G mobo + VIA C3 Nehemiah processor

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I recently purchased a VIA EPIA PE10000G motherboard with a VIA C3 Nehemiah 1.0GHz EBGA processor (http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainboards/motherboards.jsp?motherboard_id=451).
I am trying to install Solaris 10 08/07 and running into problems with the processor being recognized. In my research, I've found some posts, but alas, I seem to have come to a dead end. Here's what I've done:
Downloaded Solaris, fired up the installation. When the kernel starts booting I get:
"486 processor detected this processor not supported by solaris"
After searching on this error, I conculded that by doing the following, I should be able to get around this problem:
perl -pi -e 's#GenuineIntel#CentaurHauls#g' solaris_cd_1.iso
in order to swap out the vendor string for the processor.
Next, I booted with b -kv to see what would happen. While it seems that I got further along, I now get the following:
"processor does not support cmpxchg8b instruction"
and I get dropped into the kernel debugger which I am not familiar with.
I looked for an exact match for this error in Google and came up with this page as the only hit:

Even though it says OPENSOLARIS in the URL, I bet it's the same piece of code that I'm hitting when I try to install Solaris 10:

So my guess is that either x86_feature or X86_CX8 is false, I'm figuring it's the latter since the error message has looks similar to that variable.
Furthermore, I see that the error message exists in several places on the original installation CD:

I'd really like to get Solaris 10 on this motherboard because I'd like to use it as a small firewall where space is at a premium.
Might anyone have some further suggestions as to what I can do to get this to work? From what I've seen, I think it is possible, it's just a matter of changing something more to the disk image.

I did some more research and found a pdf on my processor and here's what I came up with:
0 = The CPUID instruction does not report the presence of the CMPXCHG8B instruction
(CX8 = 0). The instruction actually exists and operates correctly, however.
1 = The CPUID instruction reports that the CMPXCHG8B instruction is supported
(CX8 = 1).
From what I read here http://www.via.com.tw/download/mainboards/6/13/VIA_C3_EBGA%20datasheet110.pdf it would seem that the default is CX8=0 and I'm guessing that if it were 1, then I'd at least get past this error message.
Maybe there's a way to trick the installation image by changing the code that checks for this value similar to what I did for the vendor processor ID string? Seems to me that if I find where it checks for the CX8 value and reverse the logic, the installation would continue...

VIA Epia V

I just got a VIA Epia V board from a friend and thought I'd try putting arch on it, it keeps rebooting after I try starting from CD.
I'm not sure which process is on there, but from the manual it says this...
The VIA EPIA-V Mini-ITX Mainboard includes an embedded VIA Eden Processor or VIA C3TM E-Series Processor.

I noticed that I was trying to load an old ISO, I downloaded the newest release, i686-200708-2.core.iso and things were looking better, it was booting and it passed the point of reset, unfortunately shortly thereafter, I got the following message; PANIC: CPU too old for this kernel. Does anyone know how I can compile new kernel with the support for this CPU and replace it in the ISO, so I can install Arch.

MSI NX6600 AGP Card & MSI 7008, VIA PT880 Motherboard Compatible?

Need a little help today.
I have a MSI NX6600 AGP Card & MSI 7008, VIA PT880 Motherboard that are giving me some headaches.If I try any NVIDIA driver above version 71.25 the graphics (2d and 3d) are very badly distorted. The desktop screen is unreadable and any software I try to run looks warped and garbled. I am using an Antec case with a 350w Antec PSU. Both the motherboard and video card are from MSI. This is the second video card I try, I RMA'd the first one. If I use an older AGP card (Ti4200) all graphics display perfectly. Is there something I can do to fix the problem? Is there a compatibility problem between the VIA chip and the NVIDIA 6600 chip?
I'd appreciate a push in the right direction!

I had these 2d-issues with 6600GT and RMA'd the card, hope I'll get newer revision... none of the fixes helped.

Screen Resolution in solaris 10 b69

Hello
I have installed solaris 10 (10/04) in VMWARE and on my Toshiba satelite 2410-303 and there is no way to change its screen resolution. It keeps its 640x480 nomatter how many times i have tried to change it with kdmconfig. Keep in mind that i have tried in solaris 9 and in previous versions of solaris 10 express several times with success.
Any suggestions?

First you have to check whether you're using the Xsun or the Xorg
X11 server. See file /usr/dt/config/Xservers. I think the default with
s10 b69 is the Xorg server. You've the option to configure the other
X11 server by chanhing /usr/dt/config/Xservers.
With Xsun, you can change the screen resolution using the kdmconfig
program. For a vmware environment, the XF86-VMWARE driver
should be used.
For Xorg, you can create an X11 server config file by running
/usr/X11/bin/xorgconfig. I'm not a vmware user, but I guess that you
can select the "vmware" video driver, and configure approriate
screen resolutions.

Solaris 11.1 boot hangs after motherboard firmware update

I flashed my Supermicro X9SAE motherboard to v2.0a (form v1.0), now my system hangs displaying "SunOS Release 5.11 Version 11.1 64-bit Screen. Copyright,,,,,"
The grub menu appears ok before this, from which I have tried playing around with kmds debug modes and kernel debug (which hangs)(https://blogs.oracle.com/dmick/entry/diagnosing_kernel_hangs_panics_with).
I have attempted booting form the live media, but this hangs in the same place. Supermicro support sent me firmware v2.00 (build date 07/31/2012) earlier today, I re-flashed but same problem. I am hoping they can provide me with v1.0. Could this be the problem - incompatible bios? Most appreciative of any assistance that can be provided.

I love the super-micro boards so and their barebone systems are used for most of my system builds. However I did not notice this behavior with the AMD boards I used in VM Hosts even though they are also supermicro. So maybe its a Solaris VT-D implementation issue.
Are you seeing a message from Solaris at boot that says "Bios miss-represents the presence of IOMMU"? I get that on some of the systems that exhibit this issue, yet there there is no doubt that they DO have IOMMU capabilities.

Install Solaris from another OS via network - How ?

I'd like to use a BSD machine as an install server for a machine that doesn't have a CD. On the BSD machine is an iso image of the Sol 10 DVD from SUN's website. It's mounted via loopback device.
I'd like to know which files are necessary to boot and which possibilties exist to access the rest of the files - can the installer use http ?

You need to make the BSD machine an ARP/RARP server and TFTP server. As an ARP/RARP server it will respond to the Sun system when it asks to convert its MAC address to a hostname/IP address. The TFTP function will allow the BSD system to send the boot kernel (which you also need to procure) to the Solaris system. You need to have the ISO image shared out through NFS as well.
Of course, this doesn't include all of the other necessary work : profiles, boot parameters, etc.
As to how to specifically to this, I'm not sure. I have seen documents on the web from people who have done this, but I've never touched BSD. If you can get BSD to be an appropriate ARP/RARP and TFTP server, you'll be most of the way there as the rest should be done by the Sun system through NFS. It just needs to ARP/RARP and kernel (through TFTP) to get it to that point.
Of course, if the Sun system has a SCSI port you could buy a cheap, external SCSI drive on eBay and plug it in. :)

Audio player on Via-Epia M

Hello,
I'd like to install Arch on a small machine that I intend to use as an audio player. The box will be connected to a good old Amplifier+loudspeakers. This is mainly to read internet radio streams, sometime also to read so ogg or mp3 music files. The machine has a VIA processor Epia-M.
Do you have any suggestion about what to install on it ?
Will the arch i586 work on it ?

Setting up Solaris for Internet Acodemcess via Cable M

I am using Solaris 2.7 and wanted to know how to configure it to use my cable modem for Internet access. Where do I assign the gateway address in Solaris of the gateway/router I'm using?? I connect my cable modem to a router that's talking DHCP out to my LAN. I need to know how to configure Solaris for this type of configuration. I have looked everywhere and have not found how to configure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Problem installing ArchLinux from hdd partition

I have a SATA drive mounted on a VIA Epia motherboard, but no CD drive, which is why I install directly from hdd.
Currently I have Zenwalk running, which only has Lilo (no grub even in the repos!!!). I copied to contents of the install ISO to a new ext3 partition and used the following entry in lilo (taken from this guide):
image=/root/tmp/isolinux/vmlinuz
label=ArchInstall
initrd=/root/tmp/isolinux/initrd.img
append="root=/dev/sda4 BOOTMEDIA=cd"
But it doesn't boot properly. It says:

EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
kinit: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
kinit: init not found!
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init
..and before all that it complains that it doesn't find anything new in /config and /packages, but these directories aren't suppose to exist, I guess, because they don't on the original iso?
Anyways, it looks like it's mounting /dev/sda4, but then dies because the init part isn't found. I had a problem with lilo warning me that the init ram image was too large, but then I added the "large-memory" option to lilo.conf and it stopped complaining.

I found a solution!
Aparently syslinux is very good for booting anything made with isolinux. I think it's pretty universal. So what you do is simply to mount the iso, copy the contents to a fat 16 partition, rename the isolinux.cfg to syslinux.cfg and then run syslinux on the partition. It's described on this blog:

JInitiator issue with VIA Processor based motherboard

I am having VIA EPIA-V Motherboard loaded with Windows. I have installed Jinitiator. But My Jinitiator is not working. I got error saying that
HotSpot Virtual Machine Error : EXCEPTION_ILLEGAL_INSTRUCTION

Finally I found that the Via CPU Support on JRE 1.3.x is having some Bug.(Bug ID 4395702). So they asked us to use some nonstandard paramemter(-J-XX:-CodeForP6) with the java.exe. So I have to change the forms pages to invoke Jinitiator with this option. But My Other PCs will not work with this solution.
But It is getting fixed at JRE 1.4.x But the Jinitiator is based on 1.3.x only. So Jinitiator is not working in my PC. How to overcome this?
Any Idea / suggestion on this will help me.
