Solaris 10 beta 7 boot problem; stops after loading mmu32 module

Hi,
I'm having a problem getting beta 7 to boot on my system, using boot -v it appears to hang right after the mmu32 module is loaded.
Is there a more detailed debug option I can use on the boot line to track down more precisely where the hang is occuring?
Solaris WAS booting intermittedly for a while, ran DAMN WELL TOO!
Hardware is a VIA CM266 motherboard, Via 1GHz C3 CPU. Solaris is installed on partition 2; NetBSD on 0, Fedora Core 3 on 1. I'm using grub but that doesn't seem to change behavior; booting off the Solaris install CD will hang in about the same place as well.
Any info/pointers/debugging hints appreciated!
-Rob

Hello,
Thanks for the informative post. I am trying to install Solaris 10 on an Athlon system. All works fine except for the nic card.
Can you provide info on what nic card your system uses?
The built in nic on my system is a Sis900 and i have not been able to locate a driver.
I tried installing a Linksys Gigabit card (EG1032). Linksys supports Solaris drivers, but not Solaris 10. (I tried the Solaris 9 driver but it would not install. The error message said 32 bit drivers could not be installed in a 64 bit kernel)
Thanks in advance.

  • MSI P45-8D problem: reboot after loading startup services (windows seven 64bit)

    hi guys!
I decided (buying a cooler master elite 360) to keep my Memory Lover (whit ddr3/ich10r, pci-ex 2.0), which is actually the 'best purchase for me (rather than a G41 mATX) .
But then, after I had solved the problem of overheating in the pci-ex, and I put the board in its box for weeks, now has a new problem:
Continuous blocks & reboots just after loading startup services windows seven!
    The setup is this:
     Windows Seven 64bit
     MOBO MSI Memory Lover
     CPU Xeon L3110
     VGA MSI Radeon HD5450 1gb ddr2 fanless
     DDR3 1333 4GB
PSU Tacens Radix V mATX 35Watt Velociraptor + Caviar Green
     DVD burner (sata)
Esi pci-ex sound card connect module
Creative Xtreme Gamer (disconnected for now)
I have many ram models that I can put in:
     kingston lovo 4gb 1333
     4g-skill eco 4gb 1333
     adata green 4gb 1333
     corsairs white 8gb 1600
All memories can work undervolt at 1.35volt, but-of course-I keep them in standard 1.5Volt for more stability
I also tried a single 2gb stick at a time, but nothing has changed
when the system reboots (I infer) windows finished loading all the startup services (including antivirus, network drivers, audio drivers, etc. ..). and I can say with near certainty, that the last major service that is loaded, is the catalyst control center ...
I suspect an incompatibility with Memory Lover &  the Video Card's ATI driver ..
I also tried to uninstall and clean with driver sweeper, but the problem remains ..
Besides this I also have a problem with the temperature of the processor xeon l3110 (45watt tdp)
cpu heatsink as I have a Arctic Freezer LP 11 (Capacity Cooling 100W).
with thermal compound pre-installed I had 60/70 degrees recorded.
I changed the thermal compound with the famous Prolimatech pk-1 and now I measure 80/90 degrees ...(and I've changed a lot of thermal compound that I put with my eyes closed)
now, this is not possible because:
-I know the processor, I kept in daily use at 3Ghz with a noctua nh-U9B se2, and in summer never exceeded 40 degrees (d 'winter was about 30 degrees)
     - Either with the Scythe kama thermo, that with my finger, the heatpipes of the Freezer 11 LP, the Mosfet, the NB & SB are all cold .. the 5450 is 40 degrees or so, but it is fanless, and its temperature is in its normal ..
What can you tell me of my two problems:
     - Continuous reboots after loading windows seven
     - High temperature cpu (probably not real)
I remind you that a few months ago the team & Memory Lover Xeon L3110 worked perfectly.
The PSU is a new 350Watt Tacens Radix V mATX ... the system at idle consumes 70/80 watts (measured at the wall) ... I think it Is not a problem of the little power supply for the needs of my system ..
and anyway I can try to use an old Enermax 450watt Liberty, which I keep for emergencies..
     thanks
     max

    guys,
     I solved the problem!
the sink was installed wrong, and did not touch on the processor!!!
the problem was the mosfets around the cpu that make thickness in height ..
the thermal paste was put well and ... still immaculate!
processor took about 20 (or more) of restarts and very high working temperatures!
     it rocks!!
I can now say that the 'AC Freezer 11 LP is sensational!
The Xeon L3110 (with EIST, C1E & Acpi active together, That downclok it) works now to 23-25 degrees!!
     I have installed the ddr3 kingston 4gb Lovo 1333 + 8GB Corsair 1600 1.35Vram white.
(with 12GB, I can easily do a large Ramdisk for temporary files).
I installed hd5450 driver manually, but still the catalyst control center does not appear at startup
here is the screen of the situation:
finally...but how did I doubt the quality of this MSI board?

  • Solaris 8 on x86, boot problem

    hello everyone,
I've installed Solaris 8 on my old Pentium II computer. When I boot it, the hardware configuration wizard always shows up, asking me to do a full scan. The first time, I had to change the keyboard layout, but afterwards, it's allready ok after the full scan. My question is, why doesn't solaris know what hardware I have after one full scan? Can I turn this full scan feature off somehow?
    thanks!

During the screens, theres a point at which you can hit F4 for options (it shows on the bottom line). One of the options will be to set it up to autoboot.
I can't recall if you have to save a named hardware configuration or not.

  • Installing Solaris Sun OS 10 - at first window after loading stops

I tried to install Solaris SUN OS 10 in VMWare and in a PC... When I load PC by CD-ROM boot mode it loads and then comes to a command line mode and waits for command!
It says press TAB for help and I pressed that. I got a list of commands... Such as kernel, boot, module and ...
I tried all but I got error...
I tried kernel /boot/multiboot, it failed...
WHAT SHOULD I DO? What command I should type?
    Thanks
    Regards

I'm getting the same thing with Solaris 10u8 in a VirtualBox. sol-10-u8-ga-x86-dvd.iso downloaded from cds.sun.com today.
(I tried the pre-made VirtualBox image Sun provides, and it's horribly dysfunctional. So I thought I'd try a fresh installation. More fool me, apparently.)
Edit: No, it's me. The problem is that the ISO I downloaded was incomplete - it cut off at precisely 2GB! The md5sum of what I downloaded is ea5a8606894d253e286861aaf4b5c50a; the official md5sum should be 9df7fd02d82976fd3ec38a18d1a57335. I guess tomorrow I try again with part A and part B ...
So it looks like the answer is: check with md5sum that you actually have the full ISO.

  • Dual G4 MDD - Boot problem - stopped at blue screen

    Good day,
I am trying to revive a machine that was reported dead due to video card issue.
Replaced AGP graphics card with PCI - display OK.
Now I am experiencing further difficulty with the computer.
Computer boots to Apple logo and spinning wheel, then proceeds to blue background screen but no pointer and no further boot progression.
Here is the troubleshooting I have done thus far:
Verbose boot - option-V on boot, no hang-ups seen, but scrolls by rather quickly. Proceeds to blue background screen after verbose boot - same result.
Choose boot device - hold down option at boot - computer recognizes HDD boot volume and CD-ROM boot volume. Try booting to 10.3, 10.5 install CDs / DVDs, TechTool CD from AppleCare - same result.
2 HDDs installed; both cable-select. Remove secondary drive, set primary drive to master, then cable-select - same result.
2x 512K RAM installed; booted with only one, switched out DIMMs, switched RAM slots, installed known good 256K DIMM - same result.
Reset PMU via logic board switch - unplugged machine, pressed switch for 1 second, let sit for 2 minutes unplugged, plugged back in - same result.
Reset PRAM via keyboard - command-option-P-R on boot, wait for second chime, release - same result.
    Reset PRAM via OpenFirmware - command-option-O-F on bootup, reset-nvram set-defaults reset-all - same result.
Set computer to target disk mode and installed fresh OS X 10.3 on primary HDD - same result
Boot to Apple Hardware Test CD - looped > 48 hours - reports no errors.
As you can tell, I think I have run out of troubleshooting options. My gut tells me it's a bad CPU, but I wanted to post here before running up the eBay / PayPal tree too far.
Let me know what you think. Thanks!

I have had this problem twice, with 2 different fixes. It seems as if yours might be a little bit more serious. First question, how long do you let the computer sit there and try to get past the blue screen? When I got a PC --> Mac flashed Nvidia GeForce 7800 GS the "AppleHWSensor.Kext" was causing a blue screen for about 2 minutes before it would load the login screen. Removing that extension fixed it.
Second time I ran into this problem was when my system profiler was reporting "unable to report Firewire Devies" in red text. I still dont know for sure but i think my firewire port(s) have gone bad on my logic board. One or both of them. I fixed this by removing all of the .Kext files that had anything to do with firewire from my extensions folders.
    These extension include :
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
In conclusion, I would say that there is some kind of hardware failure thats causing the boot to hang. The hard part is figuring out what. Goodluck!

  • Can't boot iMac, problem started after loading OSX. When I press power button I see Apple logo, twirl and a bar. Looks like is loading but after few seconds it shuts it self off

I can't boot my IMac. I loaded OSX and first mail then contacts start acting up.
I shut down and now the iMac won't boot. When I press the power botton it comes on, I see Apple logo, swirl and a bar which saw loading for a few seconds and then shuts it self off.
    HELP!

Try an SMC reset first, and if that doesn't help, follow up with a PRAM reset:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
If you're still having problems try a 'Safe Boot' - restart holding down the shift key until you see a grey progress bar. Once booted restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If that doesn't work, boot into the Recovery HD, launch Disky Utility and check the Macintosh HD using the 'repair disk' option. If anything gets fixed click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass, then restart as normal from the Apple menu.
To start into the Recovery HD restart holding down Command + r

At last I decided to give up and bought an external DVD reader, I tried it on my old mackbook and worked as usual (booted all the distributions I had) , tried it on AIR and you know what?  DOESN'T WORK.. the boot process starts and then freezes!
I start thinking there's something wrong on my machine, I did a reset of the pram but nothing changed. Can anyone try the link I posted and let me know how the air behaves? I really need to solve this problem

  • Mid 2006 iMac Boot Problem (Since latest firmware update)

I have a Mid 2006 17" iMac. Ever since the latest firmware update in early December, about every other startup I've been having boot problems. After the white screen with the Apple Logo and the spinning wheel it goes to a blue screen like normal, but instead of the 'Loading Mac OS X' white window popping up it stays blue and the spinning loading wheel starts. I've left it loading for quite a while before and nothing changes. I have to do a force shut off by holding the power button. and then I start it up and it will boot normally.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Actually, I think it'san early 2006.

Hello, my pc has trouble booting up, whenever it starts it runs for about 2-3 seconds and turns off and goes into a boot-loop. Whenever it has been running and i restart the pc it boots without problem. It is only there when i boot up in the morning when the PC has been turned off for a while

Kind of indicates a power problem. Recommend you try it with a fan running directly off the PSU. A HDD is not what I am trying to convey here. If you have any sleep or hibernate features enabled, the fan connected directly may be the key to it starting when you hit the button normal.
RAM test is still a good idea though.

  • Kernel panics after loading modules

After an update from a few days ago, my computer started getting kernel panics upon boot (i.e. after "Loading Modules" stage). After a restart (hitting the restart button on the case, obviously), the system boots seamlessly. The weird thing is, it locks up only in the morning, when I first turn it on. No matter how many times I start it later on during the day, everything works just fine. The same behavior as presented in here.

Hey. I was just about to make the exact same thread as you did. I'm having the same problem. The first boot of the day will fail, but later boots are OK. Error messages are the same as yours. My problems started 04.01.11, and the only system upgrade I did that day was the following:
    [2011-01-04 11:36] upgraded pciutils (3.1.7-1 -> 3.1.7-2)

    [2011-01-04 11:36] upgraded pam (1.1.1-2 -> 1.1.3-1)
Maybe this can help narrowing down the search for the troublemaker.

  • Satellite A660 - USB boot problems after BIOS update

    Hello,
I own a Toshiba Satellite A660 and recently have update the BIOS to the latest version (1.80). Since then the notebook will freeze on the boot screen (the one with the Toshiba logo) whenever a USB flash memory is attached.
It works without the flash memory connected and also if I connect it after I enter the boot menu or the BIOS setup. I can even boot from it like this.
As far as I am concerned this is a serious regression. Is there any way I can downgrade the BIOS version, or any other way to fix this issue ? I rely heavily on external USB drives.
    Regards,
    Claudiu.

I too am having problems with my A660 since upgrading to 1.80 bios - the HDD/SD utility, the pc health monitor and half the other toshiba utilities no longer work because they can't recognize the bios and actually tell me this... I get an error message telling me ''can't get bios type''...
On top of this I get the boot problem as well - I have to unplug half of my USB devices to get the laptop to boot properly...
And now - one month into owning my new A660 - after a hard drive failure, a problem with the Broadcom internal wireless adaptor I now have the internal TV tuner no longer working and have no idea how to fix it...
My gut feeling is that the sooner I can downgrade to the original factory bios the BETTER - and wait for another bios update to come along that is not faulty/buggy...
HOPE someone can help me with this...
    John.

  • Solaris 8 4/01 Intel Instalation/Boot Problems

I am TRYING to install the Solaris 8 for Intel and i am having several problems.
I managed to solve some of them but now i am stuck.
I am running a PII with a an Adapetc 2940 and a scsi disk.
I am using interactive instalation one software cd 1.
I am creating 2 partions one X86 boot with 10 Mb and another one of solaris type with 8500 Mb.
in the second one i created a slice for root and another one for swap.
The problem is after all the instalation completes the system wont boot !
    Any ideia why ?
I created a dos boot partion and it boots fine.
How can i create a boot disk ?
How can access the file system a just created to check ?
How can i rewrite the mbr ?
I am using one disk and for solaris only, am i creating the right partion schema ?
    Please help.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Pedro Oliveira

    Howdy,
I am please to see someone with ethics responding to some basic questions of a solaris install problem on an intel platform. I have been working with solaris on sparc for a while, not I am trying the Intel side of the house.
I am having a similar problem as you mentioned. I have a Compaq Deskpro system with an IDE 2gb disk to install Solaris 8 4/01 on. I get all the way through the instructions to #27 on the DOC CD to the reboot of the system and the pulling out of the Installation CD. It tells me that I will need to wait for the system to reset then pull out the CD before the sytem completes its Memory test and HW detection.
I think I am removing the CD when this is being done, but the only thing I am seeing is a compaq logo and an hourglass forever....the screen seems to hang there forever.
Should I leave the installation CD in the drive longer?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dennis

  • Boot keys stopped working after Leopard install

I have seen others having this problem in another thread but no answers, so thought I'd give it a go.
After reading these threads finally got Leopard to install and run okay. Many thanks all. But, along the way, my boot keys stopped working. It doesn't matter what I hold down, whether 'c' or 'cmd-opt-p-r' or 'shift' or any other key combination the machine just boots straight into Leopard.
I have tried resetting the PMU (or whatever it is these days) via the internal button in desperation but still no luck.
    Anyone with any ideas?

Same problem here, so I'll pull this post up. No key works.
I always have to go to the Start Drive (or whatever it's called in english) in Preferences Panes and choose the partition I wish to start directly in OSX or Windows for booting back to OSX. This is very annoying. Alt key won't show up any possible boot disk although their both internal drives.
If someone would kindly post any ideas how to change that, would be great. I've done a fresh install, with a Time Machine recovery, but this didn't seem to help.
    EDIT:
I found another subjet here from november '07:

it seems the new Apple Keyboard is the origin of the Problem on iMac Core Duo. Apple techs said that a new firmeware should be coming before the end of 2007 (but it's february 2008 now ?!?). Any other ideas how to get this work ? I'll write on Aplpe feedback page for sure. Maybe the other boot keys aren't working because of this keyboard too.
