Solaris 10 cd's not bootable

We have original sets of Solaris 10 and downloaded from Sun website and they are not bootable. We were thinking at a minimum that cd1 would be, but it isn't. The DVD is bootable and works fine, we're having problems with the CD set. Anyone have this problem or can recommend a fix?
Thanks
-Chris

I'm assuming you have downloaded for the right architecture (sparc or x86).
Can you try booting up with the CD on another machine? If that works, the problem is on your system. What kind of system are you using?
If you can't boot up from CD on another machine, that means you CD is defective. In that case, I would suggest downloading them again and run md5 check on them.

    Perhaps your hardware / graphics adapter is not supported by Solaris 10.
    Take a look at the Solaris Hardware Compatibility List:
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/
    Now, no need to download any bootable ISO image. Just run this Device Detect tool:

  • Solaris 10 installation does not start

    Hi
    I am new to solaris . I downloaded the four zipped ISO files of solaris 10 from the website. I burned the images on the cd. When i insert the disk 1 and restart the computer it does not detect the cd as bootable and does not start the installation. I have win XP previously installed as the only os on my laptop. help me pls

    Make sure your computer supports bootable CD's and that you burned the images correctly to your CDR.

  • Macintosh HD not bootable after attempting to intstall Linux on Flash drive

    I made a working Ubuntu Live CD, and ran it on startup. I selected install, and installed it on the flash drive, or so I thought. I can't boot up from the flash drive, and the hard drive is no longer recognized as bootable. I tried plugging the flash drive into another computer, and it is "Not Formatted" This means that the install didn't go well. I booted up on my Mac from the Snow Leopard install disk because the hard drive didn't work. I repaired the disk in Disk Utility, but to no avail. I attempted to install Snow Leopard on the hard drive, and it went through the whole process and took an hour, but I still couldn't boot up from the Hard Drive. In Disk Utility I see that my files are still on the Hard Drive, and it isn't blank. I went to Terminal and navigated to my files, so I know they are still on there. I know I can always format and reinstall OSX, but I want to keep my files. How can I do this?

    fluberbuton wrote:
    I do have a 1 month old backup, but also on that hard drive are other files I want to keep.
    if the external is big enough you can split it into two volumes using disk utility retaining the data on the first partition and clone the internal to the new empty partition. other than this you need to get another drive.
    to see how to split a volume in two non destructively enter "create new volumes" in disk utility Help".
    I don't want to have to reinstall all of my applications and reset my preferences over again.

  • Windows 7 Enterprise - disk not bootable?

    I've just recently installed Snow Leopard, and now I'd like to install Windows 7 with Bootcamp. My copy is Windows 7 Enterprise, however the bootcamp installer does not recognize it as a bootable disk. I know this is false, however, because I have used the same CD to install Windows 7 on three other machines, all non-mac.
    My problem did not arise with the installation of Snow Leopard - I had tried to install it in the past with Leopard, but ran into the same problem (Installing Vista Enterprise instead). This seems to be a tell-tale sign to me that it is not the program (Bootcamp), but actually the CD... A confusing predicament, since, as I have said, it has worked previously in non-mac machines.
    So, my question is this: How do I install my copy of Windows 7?

    "Boot Camp" is not really an installer, other than re-partition, and makes it possible when using GPT initialized disks to boot off MBR.
    When you get to Windows install you have to delete the FAT32 parition and create NTFS, so it doesn't even create a fully valid partition for you.
    Most of the time, this kind of problem can be from -
    burning an ISO
    optical DVD drive
    DVD media itself
    I am sure that there a few others with similar iMacs that had trouble, so you aren't entirely alone, but not everyone either
    Late 2009 and you just recently installed 10.6, while I thought Snow Leopard came out last August.
    See how it works with VirtualBox or Fusion??

  • Solaris 10 Install CD Not Found...

    Hello,
    i'm trying to evaluate solaris 10 11/06. I'm using a Tyan Tiger K8SSA (S3870G2NR-RS) motherboard, and an Areca ARC1110 SATA2 PCI-X 4-Port RAID Controller.
    I have...
    1 sata drive plugged into the onboard sata controller
    3 hard drives plugged into the arc1110 raid card
    1 cdrom plugged into the onboard ide controller
    1 floppy drive plugged into the onboard floppy controller
    When my bios is set with the sata controller emulating pata (default bios setting) after the the network interface configuration screen, solaris complains that it does not find any valid solaris os cd/dvd install disks. (does not see cdrom?)
    When my bios is set with the sata controller emulating sata after the network interface configuration screen, solaris complains that there are no hard disks (does not see the sata hard drive?)
    The Tyan motherboard has an xgi volari z7 onboard video which solaris doesn't seem to recognize because the graphical install screen never shows up.
    Any help you be appreciated. Thanks!

    @tsienv,
    The original post was about incompatible x86-based architecture.
    Your question appears to be about a bad individual home-made CD disk
    and how it seems to behave with a SPARC-based system.
    If the Ultra-30's optical drive can still work with disk #1 and disk #2 and disk #3,
    then the problem is with how you created disk #4. Do it again... at 4x speed.
    If the Ultra-30's CD drive has suddenly developed problems reading
    more than just the one individual disk, then replace the drive.
    It's old.
    Ten years old.
    The Ultra-30 has a resource page in the Sun System Handbook.
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/U30/U30.html
    There is a link on that page to your OBP patch.
    Patch 105930will get your systemboard up to version 3.27.0
    Your OBP version of 3.7 suggests the computer has never had any maintenance of any sort.
    Thus my vote is for that SCSI CD drive.

  • Solaris intel (x86) DCA not saving when rebooted.

    I'm working with a Panasonic CF-71 toughbook laptop. I have loaded the 2.6 Solaris intel OS and the Xig PCMCIA patch. I have been successful in getting a 3Com 3C589D card to work, but only if I enter into DCA at boot time and delete the PnP ISA PCMCIA device at port 3e2-3e3 and then add a ISA PCMCIA device at port 3e2-3e3. Unfortunately this must be done every time the system is rebooted. Does any one know of a way to do this delete/add using the /etc/system file? Any help is much appreciated.

    Hi
    I have download Solaris 9 x86 and Cd1 at boot time gives the same error as you mentioned. I am using my Toshiba Satellite A60. I have check the HDL list and its not listed there. Does it mean I can not install Solaris 9 x86 on this box. When I boot I get the same error which is mentioned above.
    For more information I never installed Solaris in past and have no idea which Disk space /partition to be created it talks about in Install Guide.
    Can some please clarify and do let me know where am I going wrong and how to fix it.

    The ethernet adapter on my Ultra 10 doesn't show up in ifconfig -a and neither does it show up in the GUI tool. The only thing showing is the loopback lo0.

    Hi guys I just wanna say thanks for all the excellent replies but I've managed to solve the problem. I didn't choose the correct networking options during installation and it seems thats what was causing it.
    It took me so long to reply because I keep the box in college and its been the easter break here for the past 2 weeks and I've not actually had access to the machine.
    I'm using it for my project where i have to set up a fully functioning network. the box is up and running XAMPP with Apache, MySQL, PHPMyAdmin and ProFTPd. I hope I can set up sendmail and squirrelmail in the same way I have done at home on my Fedora Linux virtual machine.

  • 64-bit compilation problem on Solaris/Intel: 7th argument not initialized

    I have a problem when compiling a program on a 64-bit Solaris Intel server. The problem is that when calling a function, if the 7th or next arguments are long arguments and I pass uncasted small integers values to it, the first 32-bit of my values are uninitialized.
    I have isolated the problem in the following source code.
    #include <stdio.h>
    #include <strings.h>
    void fnc1(a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h)
    long a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h;
    printf("%ld,%ld,%ld,%ld,%ld,%ld,%ld,%ld\n", a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h);
    void main()
    fnc1(0x10101010deadbeef,0x20202020deadbeef,
         0x30303030deadbeef,0x40404040deadbeef,

         0x70707070deadbeef,0x80808080deadbeef);
    fnc1(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8);
    }I compile it using the following command:
    cc src1.c -g $* -m64 -o prog1.exeWhen I run the resulting .exe, I get the following result:

    I know that in the following cases, I do not have the problem:
    - if I cast the arguments;
    - on other platforms (AIX, SunOs/Sparc, HPUX) or if I compile in 32-bit;
    - if I use optimization (-xO1 to -xO5) ;
    - if I prototype my function at the beginning of my source (void fnc1(long a,long b,long c,long d,long e,long f,long g,long h););
    I have over 1,000,000 lines of existing code to support. I am afraid using optimization would have other impacts and for now, I cast the arguments as problems are reported. Would there be a better way to handle this? By using a compiler switch?
    Thanks in advance.

Such code always works ...Yes, and developers should attempt to accomplish just that. Alas this is very difficult to ensure, particularly given the lack of a run-time type checking mechanism.In theory, proper use of the ellipsis function would be documented, and programmers would read and follow the documentation. In practice, some programmers don't read the instructions, or forget them, or someone ill-advisedly changes the way the function works so that existing calls stop working. Variable-argument functions are a fragile mechanism. (I program almost exclusively in C++, which has combinations of features such that variable-argument functions are rarely, if ever, needed.)
    Can one even assume that the value of the NULL macro is correct? Never, because the C standard allows a variety of definitions for NULL, and implementations vary. Passing NULL to an ellipsis is a recipe for failure. Don't do it.

    Suppose you have function FI with an ellipsis that expects to get int arguments, and another FL that expects to get long arguments. When you port the code to a 64-bit environment, function FL fails. If you use the -signext option, function FI will fail.Ah, but for us FL never fails, since the compilers always widen the arguments. I fail to see the circumstance in which widening would cause FI to fail, could you please give a more specific example?
    void FI(int count, ...)
        va_list va;
        va_start(va, count);
        int t;
        while( --count >= 0) {
           t = va_arg(va, int);
           do_something(t);
    }Function FI expects to extract 32-bit int arguments. If compiled with -signext, the calling function will pass 64-bit arguments. Perhaps the -signext option also causes the 32-bit extraction to be changed to a 64-bit extraction. I have no personal experience with the option, and I'm not in a position where I can experiment right now.

  • RAID 5 not bootable

    My Mac Pro running 5.8 with a card running RAID 5 had worked well for 2.5 years.  Recently, it would attempt to boot and stall at the apple screen and shut down.  I booted from CD, and RAID utility said that a rebuild was necessary.  4 drives in the bays.  After rebuild, all green lights.  The system will still not boot from the RAID drive.  I booted in target disk mode and could see the RAID drive and obtain data from it.  There was a warning that the drive was not reliable, or something of the sort.  All data is intact and backed up, though not in time machine.  How do I restore functionality to the RAID Array?  Any tips to test the function of the raid card, or are green lights enough?

    HFS has a little bit of trouble with its own integrity. For one, it doesn't pass along or record I/O errors well, that is one area that SoftRAID has but of course not an option.
    SuperDuper is full volume mirror images; bootable backups. I even store a system image on sparse DMG I keep on an array that I can mount and restore, as well as boot volumes.
    Disk Warrior is desgined like TechTool Pro 6 to be run ideally from a hard drive, one designated just for that type of use. A minimal but complete set of drivers and utilities running latest OS version.
    The idea is if the system (and most errors are with system and not data) goes belly-up, you can just restore a good system image.
    A separate OS partition - part of your RAID; another just for system maintenance.
    I would never rely on TimeMachine, but at least you have multiple sets.
    Redundancy in backup sets and methods.
    Even if one backup goes the other is intact.
    Always having one set off line at any given time.
    If you have over 3TB of data, then you must have a large drive or even 2nd RAID0 to accomodate (TimeMachine likes to have capacity 3.5x the data).
