Solaris 10 - dtlogin banner

Hello All,
I used to have a dtlogin banner in solaris-9 by using the following file;
/etc/dt/config/Xsession.d/0050.warning
with the content;
dtstart_hello[0]="/usr/dt/bin/dthello -bground white -string 'TSP HARDENED' &"
But this no more works with solaris-10 on SPARC.
Can anyone help me how to have dtlogin banner on solaris-10.
Thanks,
Prabu.S

How are you logging in? If you are using ssh you need to modify sshd_config to have Banner point to one of these files. If you are logging on the zone's console check permissions on those files and your /etc/profile, .profile to make sure you aren't supressing the output somehow.

Does anyone know how to create a a warning banner at the login screen in solaris 10 GNOME so users have to hit OK or Enter before typing in their username?
    A million thanks,

I have had problems after the 10.5.2 update. I ended up with a frozen computer - unable to restart or shut down etc. Also ended up at one stage with Set Up Assistant screen. With the help of a computer savvy friend, at least I am able to use my computer again.
It appears the actual download did happen but it did not install and the computer tells me I need to "re-start". When I did this, window appeared on plain blue screen saying it was installing software but absolutely nothing happened - no blue scrolling bar etc.
My iMac computer is still under Apple Care Plan and technician told me they are many problems surfacing across the various machines with this upgrade. He has asked me to delay updating the software and to ring back in a couple of days because their technicians are currently working on the problem and he hopes for an answer soon.

We have a virtualized configuration with multiple VMs and were trying to make our Solaris 10 VM's issue a warning banner at login.
We have updated the standard files for this:
    /etc/issue
    /etc/motd
    /etc/olt/config/c/Xresources
Yet we still see nothing at login
    Any ideas?

  • Dtlogin to solaris zone

    Dear friends,
While connecting to one of the solaris zones xmanager(Xbrowser) throws a blank scrren instead of gui login prompt. The dtlogin deamon is running inside the zone and the ps ouput pasted below.
    root@zone1 # ps -ef | grep dtlogin
    root 12681 12158 0 14:06:58 ? 0:00 /usr/dt/bin/dtlogin -daemon
    root 21960 21644 0 10:57:32 pts/9 0:00 grep dtlogin

Do I need to enable any SMF service inside the zone to make gui works?
Any help would be greate appreciable.
    Thanks,
    Sal.

Step 1: Log in server as root & check ifconfig -a command that the IP is correct.
Step 2: Then check the Display variable value. If not set then export DISPLAY=IP:0.0

  • Another WM in Solaris 10

    Hi all !
How I can start a new windows manager (like xcfe or kde) in a default solaris 10 install.
I just installed the free packages (xcfe and kde).
I don't find any .xinitrc (like in linux or bsd's).

  • Solaris 9 x86 bug report - el_GR.ISO8859-7 & CDE

I'm posting this article here, because I can't find any official Solaris 9 x86 bug report page. I hope the developers will notice it. I'm using Solaris 9 x86 (12/02), with the latest 9_x86_Recommended patch cluster installed, and support for Greek installed too.
It seems there is some kind of problem, when trying to view text files with Greek (el_GR.ISO8859-7) characters, which were created under Windows. To be more specific:
If I boot at CDE with language el_GR.ISO8859-7, and try to view a .txt file (just with a simple double click), which I have created under Windows, with Greek characters,
the screen goes black, and the CDE login screen appears again (restarts). If I keep the Greek language or change the language to US English, I can boot at CDE again, with
no problems. If I try "command line logging", the screen goes off - just like when the computer is powered off, and I can't do anything, (well, except pressing the reset button, that's the sure way). And if I use the "init 6" command, while being logged at CDE, from a terminal, the Graphical Desktop exits, and then, the screen goes off again (just like the computer is powered off), but finally the computer manages to restart.

  • How can you set up a new graphiccard ?/SOLARIS 8 - intel architecture

    Hi...
I`ve installed Sun microsystems SOLARIS 8 on my intel
    architecture based system.
The Computer is a Toshiba satellite 2210
with a trident cyber 9525 graphiccard.
During installation i wasnt sure about the graphiccard
and so i chose the standart 16 colors card.
But now i know the type of the card and would like to
    configurated it on this system.
Ive allready tried it with the admintool but then i realised
that it`s only for changing user, groups etc.
How can i install the graphiccard ???
Is there any tool for this ???
Maybe somthing like SAX from the SuSE Linux ???
    THX

    Btw. it's best running kdmconfig from the text console;
stop "dtlogin" using the "Options -> Command line
    login" menu.
You should get a "console login" on the text console.
Login as "root", and run kdmconfig to configure your
new video card. When you're happy with the card,
resolution, color depth, etc... and the card tests
without errors, save the settings in "kdmconfig" and
log off from the text console. After ~10 seconds,
dtlogin restarts automatically using the new settings.

  • Basic lp printing setup on Solaris 10

What changed with lp printing in Solaris 10 from previous versions? I used to use CUPS but can't anymore as Sun stopped uncluding it on the companion CD with later versions of Solaris 10 (U4+). Now I just want a simple print queue setup to a hp 4250 networked printer that will always print landscape, compressed print. We have Solaris 9 boxes with these queues setup without CUPS that work just fine but I guess the same lpadmin, lpfilter, etc. commands don't setup a print queue the same way on Solaris 10 as I can't print to the printer - only 2 sets of banner pages come out. I want to tie a shell script filter to the queue that prepends the esc codes to the print file to make it go landscape and compressed print but nothing prints out but banner pages. If I look at /var/lp/logs/requests most status codes are 0x0100.
I've tried following Sun Doc ID: 212177 as follows:
    # vi myfilter.sh
    #!/bin/ksh
    #Print landscape
    echo "^[&l1O"
    cat -
    # vi /etc/lp/fd/myfilter.fd
    Input types: any
    Output types: myfilter
    Printer types: any
    Printers: any
    Filter type: fast
    Command: /opt/local/bin/myfilter.sh
    # lpfilter -f myfilter -F /etc/lp/fd/myfilter.fd
    # lpadmin -p myque -o protocol=bsd,dest=<printer hostname> -v /dev/null -m netstandard -T unkown -I myfilter
    # enable myque
    # accept myque
    # lp -dmyque <some_text_file>
result are 2 banner pages and contents of the file to be printerd and /var/lp//logs/requests is 0x0100.
someone please educate me if U can? (I'd take a Dinozo slap to the back of the head from Gibbs as necessaryl!)

    Hi,
Problem resolved, a case of RTFM.
In order to avoid a ppd error in the command below you need to ensure the ppd-cache is working and this involves rebuilding the it
    # ppdmgr -r
You should now be able to sucessfully add the ppd option as shown below.
It appears that the Make, Model and Driver options do not appear after a clean install of Solaris 10 10/08 in the Printer Manager. However, if you create a printer with a ppd interface and then delete it the options remain. example below.
    # lpadmin -p hp1 -v /dev/lp1 -I postscript -m standard_foomatic -n /usr/lib/lp/model/ppd/system/foomatic//HP/HP-DeskJet_950C-hpijs.ppd.gz

    1. check if dtlogin is running in S8 BZ:
    # ps -ef | grep dtlogin
if it's not running start it:

    2. from client initiate a XDMCP request using the IP of this S8 BZ.
From Solaris 10 you can use "Options -> Remote Login".

  • Problems with dtlogin and XDMCP

    Hi;
I am trying to connect to my Solaris 9 box using XDMCP and I am having various degress of sucess. Before I go on I should add that using the same X server as a client on the same remote machine I was able to connect to various other AIX and HP-UX boxes.
The server in question does not run any kind of local display. Therefore, as advised in this article:
    http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/802-6486/6ia6232c5?a=view
I have copied the /usr/dt/Xservers to /etc/dt/config/Xservers (incidentally I had to create the dt and config directories under /etc even though the documentation implies they already exist). I then edited the file to comment out the:
    :0 Local local@console /usr/bin/X11/X :0
line. Of course everything was sent a -HUP after the config files were edited.
Despite this, when I attempt to connect to the machine using `-query machine1` I get a back screen with an egg timer and little else. After a while the connection times out.
On the Solaris box I get another dtlogin spawned to listen for more connections, along with an instance of `dtgreet -display mypc:0` for the machine connecting to it. Forward and reverse name resolution are working correctly for both machines.
Within the /var/dt/Xerrors file I get the following error messages:
/usr/openwin/bin/xset: bad font path element (#58), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
    Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

    Wed May 26 16:43:25 2004
error (pid 777): display mypc:0 could not be initialized, server may be grabbed.
I am now at a complete and utter loss and would very much appreciate any comments or suggestions anyone has. Many thanks: Sam.

Having just had this problem myself, it seems the solution is to use the Solaris font server so the correct fonts are available. So for Cygwin/XFree86 it has to be called with:
    XWin -query <sol9_host> -fp tcp/<sol9_host>:7100
As for the configuration files, it seems that the documentation is incorrect the X configuration files are under /usr/openwin/lib/X11 so for the Xservers file edit /usr/openwin/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers.

So I went to the patch portal, downloaded the PROM update 104288 for ultra 1E (not ultra 1), burned it on a cdrom, switched the jumper on the board to writable, booted and flashed the PROM successfully. The box rebooted with OBP 3.33.0.
(detail: the new banner shows now: "Sun Ultra 1UPA/SBUS (UltraSPARC???? 167 mhz") : the cpu version is gone).
From now trying to boot failed:
    Boot device: /sbus/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@0,0
krtld: load_exec: fail to expand cpu/$CPU
krtld: error during initial load/link phase
panic - boot: exitto64 returned from client program
I took an OpenBSD 3.4 sparc64 iso. It booted and installed, and the box runs it like a charm.
I took a NetBSD 1.6.1 sparc64 iso.It booted and installed, and runs just fine.
I took a Linux-sparc iso. It booted and installed and it turns the box into a nice desktop.
I took a Solaris 8 iso, then a Solaris 9, then the last Solaris 10 Express, setting OBP:
    set-default boot-file
    set-default boot-device
I use the CD#1, not the "Installer" one.
and I boot giving the kernel path: /platform/sun4u/kernel/sparcv9/unix
    then the modules path /platform/sun4u/kernel.
    Fails allways:
(trying to boot the 32bit sparcv8 solaris 8 kernel fails too).
"Alloc of 0x400000 bytes at 0x1000000 refused" (memory alignment issue ?) in case of solaris 9 or 10, and fail to expand cpu/$CPU in case of solaris 8.
It seems solaris doesn't support ultra 1e with the last PROM.I will not try to downgrade the OBP, as they warn on sunsolve to not do that at all.
So I keep running OpenBSD and Linux on the box.
But maybe I miss something about solaris ??

    Hello,
this is a problem that is not acknowledged by Sun !
Please review the following thread on the Sun Support Forum (posted Thu, 12 February 2004 03:47)
Either go to http://supportforum.sun.com and select the Forum (last is the topic)
    Hardware ? Ultra/SunBlade ? Upgraded OBP on Ultra 1 - now can't boot
    or use the link
    http://supportforum.sun.com/hardware/index.php?t=msg&th=1267&start=0&rid=23&S=a533bb4719fbfe75ac9083e444cf19d1
You have to downgrade the OBP. Unfortunately the previous patch is no longer available (from Sun) for download.
You can either take one of the 'SUN4U SYSTEM FLASH PROM UPDATE' cd's (e.g. 2.3) or download it from the alternate location given in the thread.
It's very interesting that the error does only appear when Solaris is involved. I will post this as an update to the original thread.

  • Problem removing login banner

    Hi All,
For security purposes, I am trying to prevent a Solaris 2.5.1 system from displaying any hardware or software information when a telnet session is initiated. To achieve this, I have removed the /etc/motd file, modified the /etc/default/telnetd file to include the line BANNER="", and created a /etc/issue file. When a user telnets to a Solaris 2.6 system configured this way, they see only the disclaimer contained in the /etc/issue file and then the login prompt. When I configure a Solaris 2.5.1 system in this manner, however, the following line is displayed before the /etc/issue:
    UNIX(r) System V Release 4.0 (servername)
Anyone know what generates this line and how I can get rid of it?
    Thanks,
    John Frizzell

    Hi John,<br><br>
Unfortunately in Solaris 2.5.1 and earlier, this banner message<br>
is hardcoded in the in.telnetd daemon. It's only with Solaris 2.6<br>
that the configuration variable BANNER has been introduced, <br>
precisely to allow system administrators to remove any mention<br>
of the type and version of the OS.<br>
    <br>
    <br>
So, there is no official solution to your problem on 2.5.1<br>
but there are ways around it:<br>
    <br>
    - Binary edit the file /usr/sbin/in.telnetd and put some \0<br>
characters instead of the beginning of the string<br>
    - Or get a public domain in.telnetd daemon and compile it yourself<br>
    <br>
Of course, none of these options would be supported :-).<br><br>

  • Dimension 2300 and Solaris 10

    Hi guys....
I just installed Solaris 10 (Dec 8, 2004) on a Dell Dimension 2300 and it doesn't seem that I can start the graphics interface. Right now it's sitting at level 3 (text only) and I'd love more than anything to bring it to level 5.
I'm brand new to Solaris and dont know yet where to go get patches and/or drivers to support the monitor and graphics card... can someone help?
The video card for this machine is Intel 845. I did run the xorgconfig tool (according to another thread in this forum) and changed the video card to Intel 810 (They dont have 845 in the list). Still not able to start the xserver.
Will keep looking while waiting for an answer... Thanks all! Have a nice day...
    Kevin

Seems like you're used to Linux. In Solaris run-level 5 is shutdown+poweroff.
Try to configure the graphics adapter by using the "kdmconfig" command. Choose "Xsun" and pick the following driver:
    XF86-I830 Intel integrated graphics chipsets: 830, 845, 852, 855, 86
After you're finished with kdmconfig start X-Windows using the following command:
    /etc/init.d/dtlogin start
