Solaris 10 Express version

Does the Solaris 10 Express version support USB enabling the OS installation from an external usb dvd/cdrw drive?
Thanks,
-verO

10r R2 is not available for Solaris 10 x86 (projected certification is the first half of this year), so there won't be an Express Edition until sometime after that.

  • GIMP on Solaris Express CD Set

    Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,
I want to run newer version of GIMP preferably at least 2.4. My current Solaris version is Solaris 10, Jan 2005 version. I ordered Solaris Express 11 x86 core and, 6 CD set since I was not looking forward to download free GTK libs to set up a local build environment for GIMP since it would take at least an entire day to get GIMP working using my dial up modem.
I have several questions about Solaris Express 11x86 OS/Application Set
    1. Does it still use familiar GRUB 0.9X as boot loader? I am not familiar with GRUB 2.x
    2. Would my old Star Office 8 install on Solaris Express 11x86 OS
    3. Would the new version of GIMP comes with Solaris Express 11x86 would install on old
Solaris 10 of January 2005 version?
    4. Since Graphics and Audio editing programmes runs better when swap and /tmp slices on the
second physical disk. Can I at least make Solaris 10 and Solaris Express share these
    spaces ? I give 12GB for /usr 16GB for /opt and 4GB for / and 16GB for /export/home on
one primary partition on fist disk and /tmp and swap on another 4 GB primary partition on the
    second disk.
I would appreciate yourkind advice and time.

    Hi,
I think that you should take a look on [http://www.blastwave.org|blastwave.org] and search for pkg-get utility. It's similar to apt-get (solve dependencies). And I believe they should have a newer version of gimp. I have been using this repository a lot when I was using Solaris 10.
It won't mess up your old libs &etc. Everything is installed into /opt/csw.

  • Solaris Express Developer x86 -- only 64-bit?

Hi, people, glad to be back. Just downloaded Solaris Express Developer edition x86 and installed -- almost with no problems.
It's a system with Intel Celeron D with 64-bit and Hyper Threading support, DDR2 1Gb.
    Now running Solaris I noticed it's a 64-bit version, not 32-bit, as I meant to have. The command `isainfo -n` gives back ... "amd64"!
Is there a 32-bit version of Solaris Express DE x86?
Or maybe I need not worry at all and keep running the 64-bit one (actually, I've got no problem as yet)?
Thanks in advance for any comments.

So, my system supports 64-bit computing after all. I
never thought about it, in fact.
But does it mean Solaris Express DE x86 runs as
64-bit on the systems supporting 64-bit, and as
32-bit on 32-bit-only systems?Yes, that's correct. Solaris 10 was the first version of Solaris to support 64 bit operation on the x86 architecture.
It and later versions (including Solaris Express DE x86) should automatically detect the architecture and run in that mode at boot time. There are some ways to force it to run in 32 bit mode only if necessary, but that would be unusual.

  • Solaris Express Developer Edition, free DVD kit

Today I ordered the "Free Solaris Express Developer Edition DVD":
"For a limited time, Sun is offering a Solaris Express Developer Edition DVD for x86 platforms mailed to you at no charge." (http://developers.sun.com/sxde/download.jsp)
Will I get the new 9/07 version or an older one? When I ordered Solaris 10 some time ago, Sun sent me version 11/06.
    Thanks!

Well, it looks like this version of Solaris simply forgot to bundle the FLAC gstreamer plugin. Does anyone know where to find a version compiled for solaris?

  • Solaris Express Developer Questions

Currently I am running Solaris Express Developer however i noticed there is no Subversion or CVS installed by default.
The version I am running is as follows.
    bash-3.00$ uname -a
    SunOS solaris-devx 5.11 snv_55b i86pc i386 i86pc
Any ideas if there is a newer version, and whether it has subversion and cvs installed by default?
    Thanks

I have looked at the latest download for Solaris Express, Developer Edition 2/07 which is what I am running now.
I have connected the Sun Update Manager and I receive no updates.
Currently I am trying to use this as my development platform/workstation at work. Developing java applications seems to be well catered for however some sections of the desktop environment look a little rough.
I am having issues printing from Evince and Gimp, which seem to be using a different printing interface to other applications.
It seems that this "Developer Platform" may be a little green for use as a workstation without some proper update mechanisms...

You are still in the middle of an active forum thread

He (Senior Member) pointed me to another link, which is this :

I thought (not sure) my problem is easier than sinking into the link above (may be CD problem)
Why abandon that one, when you seem to be making progress over there?I am not giving up that one.

  • Solaris express first impressions

Downloaded solaris express on 10/DEC/05 burned to 4 cd's. Did a complete OEM install
Installed 3 times, once with a xircom, 3com and netgear pcmcia cards, no detection of the nics however the pcic slots are detected and show in prtconf -D | grep pcic. Not good
Big show stopper, will not detect the PNY or any other usb memory card the way Solaris 10 picked it up as soon as it was plugged in. Very not good, no way to transfer new drivers w/o burning them to a cd...
It also did not detect the USB mouse the way solaris 10 did both during install and after install.
This is on a Sony VAIO PCG-F480. This seems to be a step backwards where before the only issues were the nic's which I never did get to work and is why I tried the express version.
It did however get the LCD, onboard mouse pad correct which solaris10 also did.

Apparently the nfs client module is need for some reason I don't understand (I'm doing a local CD install). Since I installed the SUNWCrnet cluster this kernel module didn't install.
I resolved this by manually installing the SUNWnfsckr from failsafe mode..

  • Oracle Solaris Express 11 license

    Hi,
Can I use Solaris Express 11 in production environment without buying the support subscription from Oracle?
Can I use older versions of Solaris (9 and 10) in production environment without buying the support subscription from Oracle?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Each system you've installed had a license attached to it. You must follow those rules.
For older systems, our experience is that Oracle maintained whichever terms were agreed with Sun and/or upgraded the support contracts to current plans (which usually are better and/or the same).
For new systems it's pretty clear you'll need a support contract from Oracle.
Just to have yourself covered, I suggest you submit the old systems you're interested to keep running to an Oracle rep and ask for their opinion. Licenses can be tricky and a good sales rep will have enough experience answering the same question from other customers to be able to help you properly.
As for Sol11 "Express", it also requires a license even though people may view it as Solaris11's little brother. Oracle isn't as active as I expected in selling Sol11 Express but they are nevertheless offering official support. When Solaris 11 comes out later this year they may change things (perhaps put Sol11 Express on a fast dev track, make it free, etc). For the time being, you need a support contract for production systems.

If your version of Solaris is not supported, see the support matrix, you are on your own. This is likely the case.

  • Where can i find something like table: Solaris Express - build number

I mean, what version (build) of Solaris corresponds to paticular Solaris Express?
And what is Solaris Beta 3, 6 and so one? How are they assosiated with builds?

No such thing as a table, though one can make one.
    03/04 - beta1 - b52
    04/04 - beta2 - b5x
    05/04 - beta3 - b55
    06/04 - beta4 - b58
    07/04 - beta5 - b60
    08/04 - beta6 - b63
    Builds are software-code releases.
The ones above are all extrernal (public).
The builds inbetween have not been released.

  • Solaris 10 vs Solaris Express

    Hi,
I'm a newbie here. My basic question follows: what is the difference between Solaris and Open Solaris(Solaris Express)? Which of them would you suggest for building a java development environment?
    Thx.
    gigo

Actually there are actually 3 versions. Solaris 10, Solaris express and open solaris.
Solaris 10 is the production version.
Solaris express is snapshots of the solaris 11 development work.
Theres also solaris express developer environment (SXDE) which is solaris express with the developer tools preinstalled.
Open solaris is the community project where the real development takes place.
As a development environment I would probably recommend going with SXDE but if your apps are going to be deployed in production on solaris 10 boxes, you probably need a solaris 10 box for deployment testing..

I did some research and it appears that the latest edition or Solaris Express will install and work on the Acer Aspire 9100. It is a turion with a nvidia chipset, atheros wireless and an nvidia 6100 graphics chip set. Does anyone have experience with this install.

Re research: You have tested Your hardware with Hardware_Detection_Tool? It seems to be more up to date than Install_Check. Install (or use already installed version) Windows, download this small tool and run it on-line (Internet connectionis necessary). Latest nevada version fills many gaps in previous releases.
