Solaris 10 GA/SunBlade 100 - /usr/openwin missing a lot of files.

Solaris 10 GA (CD-Media)
SunBlade 100, 500mhz, 768meg memory (problem)
SunBlade 100, 500mhz, 1024meg memory (problem)
SunBlade 150, 650mhz, 2048meg memory(success)
Complete install from CD Media on all 3 machines (default, Entire Group.) On the 100's, after final reboot, X-Server would not start on console. /var/dt/Xerrors showed "not found" libraries (libfont.so.1, libtypesclr.so.1) and Xsun would die. On the 150, no problems.
I compared (by size) /usr/openwin on the 100's and the 150 and revealed the 100's directory pretty much empty. (Sizes at end.)
I copied over /usr/openwin from the 150 to the 100, rebooted and JDS and CDE are working fine.
Happy to assist with any further testing! If my PSP order was here I'd file a bug report. :)

/usr/openwin is the directory copied from the SunBlade 150.
/usr/ORIGINAL_openwin is the directory installed on both SunBlade 100's

Does the log entry tell you anything?

  • Missing A LOT OF files - what to do?

    Hi!
I got ~2000 files missing in Lightroom when moved to another computer.
There are no ("red") Folders missing, just files - ~2000 files in
Library/Missing files and every one of it has "?" mark as well.
What can I do to automate the process of finding files in new place?
I mean, I know the place where the files moved, but it's too painful
clicking every one of 2000+ "?" marks and pointing the new place
for every file one by one and again.
    Thank you,
    Anastasy.

    I've solved it!
There was another folder with same name as an old - but with no photos in it, so it hasn't marked as RED. When I deleted this empty folder and restarted Lightroom - it became red, so it just took me 2 clicks to locate missing photos in this folder.
    Thanks!
But I think it's bug - Lightroom should inform about such cases.

  • Solaris10 missing /usr/openwin directories in non-global container

I created a global (default) and two non-global containers. The /usr/openwin directories in non-global containers are empty (while global one's are fine). Since /usr is read only in non-global containers, I can't add anything to it.
    questions:
    1. why is the /usr/openwin directories is empty in non-global containers, did I miss some steps in creating containers?
    2. How do I make /usr/openwin visible now to the non-global containers?
    appreciate your help.

What you observed is normal. The basic Solaris 11 zone install gives you a somewhat minimal install. If you want additional packages, you can install them. If you want the zone install to have what you would install from a CD I suppose you could do a the following:
    pkg install slim_install
    pkg uninstall slim_install
My understanding is that the slim_install package contains dependencies which loads all of the desktop software but doesn't contain any content itself - which is why you can (and should) remove it afterwards.
That said, normally one uses a zone for a particular purpose. A better approach might be to install only the software in the zone which is needed for that purpose. That would save space, limit security exposure and reduce maintenance overhead. If your purpose is to have a full user environment, that may be to include all the slim_install packages and maybe others as well.
I would recommend that you not install services by copying files. If you need a service find out what package contains that service and install the package in the zone. That way you won't break maintenance via pkg update.
    So - your questions:
    1. A Solaris 11 zone install is minimal, presumably to make it easy to set up simple single function zones. Additional packages can be added as needed using "pkg install" as needed to provide any necessary services.
    2. Solaris 10 zones work differently and import most packages from the global zone. With Solaris 10 sparse zones, you actually use the same files from the global zone. Solaris 11 zones are different in that they are actually a separate install. The basic install is minimal, presumably to allow for small and simple single function zones. You are not doing anything wrong with respect to the basic install, this is just how things work.

  • Boot Solaris 10 Install CD with Sunblade 100 with SPARCIIe

    OK > boot cdrom
This fails and is looking at [platform/sun4u/kernel/sparcv9/unix], asking for the boot file name. I have used these install CDs on other systems (probably 32-bit) and I understand that 32-bit and 64-bit installs are now on same CDs.
I also tried boot cdrom install with errors.
I think this error is probably related to 64-bit boot since Sunblade 100 with SPARCIIe requires 64-boot only boot.
Any idea what the boot-file I should specify is?
    Thank You

The symptoms sound as if you're attempting to use CDs for the
Solaris-10(x86) instead of the proper Solaris-10(SPARC) disks.
Both sets would be readable by an OS, but only the SPARC distro
would be bootable on a SPARC-based system such as your Sunblade 100.
There hasn't been a 32-bit SPARC system since pre-Ultra days.
    ... perhaps 10 years ???
The PeeCee universe still swims in 32-bit-land.
The x86 port of Solaris has both kernels,
but that's for a completely different architecture.

  • Trouble with Solaris 10 install on SunBlade 100 using Media CDs from Sun

    Hello World,
My SunBlade 100 was not reading various burned Solaris 10 media, so I purchased the media kit from Sun. The installation is successful up until the point where it asks for CD2. I didn't even hear the drive spin when I clicked "Next" after inserting CD2.
I know it is not the CD drive since it obviously works for CD1. It is also not an intermittent problem with the CD drive because CD1 works each time I run the install. I also don't think it is the media since CD2 went right from the factory envelope to my CD drive.
    So:
    1. Has anyone encountered something like this?
    2. Can I resume the installation from the command line?
    Many Thanks,
    Greg

    Actually ...
Yes, it can be the optical drive.
Those factory shipped drives in the SB100's were prone to spontaneously failing, one minute to the next.
Additionally the CD's are actually written differently, whether they are the bootable ones in the set versus the non-bootable CDs in the set.
    Data track layouts are different.
The optical drive could commonly have difficulty reading every disk you ever insert into it.
Borrow a replacement drive from a PeeCee.
Jumper it the same as the current drive and just use it.
If that works, then go buy a replacement.
Optical read-only drives are laughably cheap.
Optical read/write DVD drives are inexpensive, as well.

  • /usr/openwin/lib/libp missing

    Hi -
Used to compile a program which uses /usr/openwin//lib/libp/xxxx.a successfully under Solaris 8 with Forte Dev 6. Now when I tried the same under Solaris with Sun Studio 10, error is generated as there is no libp directory. I checked and there is /usr/openwin/lib but no libp. Has this something got to do with Solaris 10 per se or is it part of Sun Studio 10 installation which has changed. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards

    Hi
Thanks a ton for your mail. Yes remembered about the static libraries and checked. There is no libp directory, but all the libraries under openwin/lib/libp are now in openwin/lib.
thanks once again for the pointer

  • Sunblade 100 questions

My new toy is on the way. I have several questions, will figure these out eventually but anyone ( especially from Sun with knowledge of the Sunblade 100 ) with opinions or knowledge I am interested in hearing from.
The machine is evidently pre-installed with Solaris 8 1/01 and a bunch of patches. That's nice, and fine for most people, but I want to figure out how to re-install all on my own.
First general area: How useable will the machine be when I try installing Solaris 8 1/01 without putting in the whole list of patches recommended/listed in the produt notes guide? Are the patches mostly related to "fancy" things like supporting video (beyond base already in machine), supporting usb stuff, etc ... or does the machine really have problems without?
Second general area: Memory configuration. Machine ships with 128 Meg of PC 133 ECC ... I can add other 128 meg compatible to the other slots, right? I don't need to put 512 meg chip into the first slot, right?
Third general area: Sun ships with one 15 gig drive IDE drive. The machine will support almost any regular IDE drives, in the primary or secondary bays, correct? I want to try adding a 40 gig maxtor into second area, will also try experimenting with 40 gig maxtor as primary ... any hints on issues I may run into?
    Thanks in advance ... John

Ok, the sunblade 100 rocks! Everyone should have one ... that being said, this is what I have learned so far!
First, it ships with two different operating environment disks that let you install 10/00 or 1/01 versions of Solaris 8, then patches those versions as needed for the Sunblade. Thanks Sun, very nice work there.
It also supports other standard IDE drives very nicely (I have a 40 gig maxtor in there and a 6 gig wd currently) (and saved the 15 gig shipped with it ... for what I don't know!).
My machine is currently at 512 meg ( you can buy 256 meg of ECC PC133 at about 99 bucks) ... more memory on the way.
So far it has done a very nice job of recognizing/using standard PC components. What about SCSI controllers for the internal expansion slots? Sun sells one ( kind of pricey ) ... what will it recognize and use? Will it see old ones, new ones, what? Does Sun have a list somewhere of what is supported? Opinions by anyone about what may work?
Thanks in advance. Hey, who is sungodone?
    Cheers, John

  • /usr/openwin/bin/xmkmf: imake: not found

I'm trying to install TightVNC on Solaris 10 (sparc) and have ran into several issues. This was a fresh Solaris install, therefore I recently installed make, gzip, and gcc from the sunfreeware site.
    # xmkmf
    mv -f Makefile Makefile.bak
    imake -DUseInstalled -I/usr/openwin/lib/X11/config
    /usr/openwin/bin/xmkmf: imake: not found
    PATH env:
    # echo $path
    .:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin
I installed make in the /usr/local/bin folder.
I'm not exactly sure what imake is so I'm fairly stuck at this point.

I think I have an environment variable issue. Here is copy of the output of #env:
    OPENWINHOME=/usr/openwin
    PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/ucb/:/usr/css/bin:/usr/sfw/bin
    PS1=#
    and here is an echo:
    # echo $path
    .:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin
I may be adding the variable wrong because I'm getting a "make not found" error now. Do you have a good link on adding / appending onto environment variables?
    Thanks

  • SunBlade 100 - cannot mount/boot from CD-Rom

    Dear Forum,
Please excuse what are very basic questions - I'm very new to Sun and Unix and still feeling my way around :o) I would be very grateful if someone has the time to help me with this.
I installed Solaris 10 on my inherited Blade 100 and all works fine except for I cannot mount the cdrom (I get the message Mount point cannot be determined) Under advisement from a distant friend of a friend, I tried stopping vold and then mounting the drive but it still doesn't work. Another friend suggested I replace Solaris 10 with Debian Linux... but the poor ole blade couldn't find the CDROOM from the OK prompt either.
At a guess - I'm thinking that the drive has actually just died. The machine was sat around for 3 years doing nothing. But its equally likely that I screwed up the OS from being a complete airhead, so any tips on how to trouble shoot this would be most welcome.
If I need to replace the drive, I have a couple of old Ultras that I can cannibalize for a replacement drive - plus a few pcs. I would be grateful for any tips on doing this too.
    many thanks in advance,
    Kate

A couple or 'corrections' if I may.
There is no such command as probe-ide-all.
IDE devices can only be internal ones and the -all syntax is an OBP syntax to look at external devices.
It shouldn't work. It should not provide usable information.
If you need to review how to work within the OpenBoot environment,
then here is the OBP 4.x Command Reference Manual from Docs.Sun.Com
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs?q=816-1177
Next, your report that "boot cdrom" was returned when you probed the IDE bus ...
    ... just doesn't make sense.
A command does not produce another command as its output report.
The result of an OBP probe of whatever bus you're examining (not IDE, not SCSI)
should not return another command as its result.
Replace the optical drive in that SunBlade 100.
They were prone to spontaneous failure.
    Just replace the drive.

  • What external tape drives are compatible with sunblade 100s?

    hi,
    please, can anybody tell me:
    1. where i can find out whether or not a particular tape drive is compatible with my sunblade 100 workstation running solaris 9?
    2. do external tape drives usually connect to the workstation's serial port?
    3. what kind of specs/features should i be looking out for?
thanks in advance for your replies.

I would imagine you could use any tape drive with your sun blade... most are connected by either scsi or fiber channel... there could be some that are network controlled... not aware of any that are controlled by serial port...
GOOGLE is a wonderful thing... try it, you will like it...
compatibility is more concerned with which OS and program you want to use with the tape drive...
specs depend on what you are backing up... a single user would most likely only need a single drive... if you were a multi-national corp, then maybe you might contact Sun Sales...
maybe you should to some research yourself...

  • Is Solaris 10 now 100% largefile-aware?

I was just reading the largefile(5) man page (dated 2003) and surprised it is even there - this is a Solaris 10 8/07 SPARC install.
This is probably just an old man page, but is Solaris 10 now 100% largefile-aware, except for possibly some legacy odd and ends like /usr/xpg4 and /usr/ucb?
    Thanks, -w

No, it's not completely correct, but yes there are still utilities that are not largefile aware. As an example, /usr/bin/perl and /usr/bin/bash now seem to be LF aware, but are not updated in the file. But other items like "diff" still have the restrictions.
Every program that's not lf-aware has to be updated, and I imagine that such work isn't scheduled unless there's a complaint. I'd log a bug against the man page for not being a useful guide any longer and against any programs that you find that aren't lf-compatible. More bugs filed, more likely to get scheduled for fixes.

  • SunBlade 100 to Cisco PIX Security Appliance

I have a problem connecting a SunBlade 100 workstation with Cisco Routers, and the PIX Security Appliance at the Console ports of both a Cisco router and the Cisco PIX Security Appliance. This should be out of the serial port of the SunBlade 100 workstation..
I have tried to use the UNIX command tip hardwire. No luck connecting to the console port. I also tried to use the UNIX cu command again no response from the console port. I tried connecting a modem temporarily to the SunBlade 100 workstation and was successful in echoing a phone number to a modem. However, I need to use a direct connection from the SunBlade 100 workstation.
Currently, Windows 2000 workstations are used with
Hyperterminal to connect to routers and the PIX Security Appliance. I have 24 SunBlade workstations in my classroom and need to use them to connect to the console port on Cisco routers, and the PIX Security Appliance. I would appreciate any help anyone might be able to give on this subject.

  • SunBlade 100 Workstation - Video Problem

Hello, I just got ahold of a SunBlade 100 workstation (for free might I add. ;) And it's all hooked up and everything, but for some reason there is no video. I have a eMachine 17" CRT monitor...i dont have any other monitor to test it on..
    I have no "Red Light"
I checked the memory, it will only boot with the DIMM in the slot farthest from the CD Drive.
I have a "Green Light" that comes on and stays on while the system is online.
I tried another video card, with the same thing.
    What else can I do?

    Hello,
Does anyone have a solution to the problem?
    Without knowing the cause ?
The information you did provide is absolutely insuficient.
I have a eMachine 17" CRT monitor...i dont have any other monitor to test it on..
This system worked when I got it, I brought it home and now it doesnt work...
Would that (PS2 keyboard through a USB/PS2 adapter) cause the video problem?
Did it work with this particular monitor ? Probably your monitor doesn't support the default/current resolution of the Blade 100 or the non-Sun USB keyboard isn't detected (no keyboard = no display).
I would recommend you the read the documentation (especially the Troubleshooting chapter). Get a console cable (null-modem) to troubleshoot the problem and to be able to select another video-mode (resolution).

  • How do you open a Numbers file sent from another Mac user with same operating system, i get a pop up that says I'm missing an index.hml file??? HELP PLEASE

how do you open a Numbers file sent from another Mac user with same operating system, i get a pop up that says I'm missing an index.hml file??? HELP PLEASE

The operating system may be the same but the Numbers applications are likely different.  You need to get the apps in sync.  Unfortunately, the Numbers (and Pages as well) saga is pretty confusing (and frustrating).  Here's some info from the iWork resident version expert (PeterBreis0807):
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs.
