Solaris 10 in VMWare

Yes, i know it is unsupported, but has anybody tried to run Solaris x86 in Oracle VM?
Thanks

Your title is someone confusing, because Solaris 10 is supported in VMWare
http://pubs.vmware.com/guestnotes/guestos_solaris10.html
However, I would be interested to know if Oracle is planning to support Solaris too.
As Oracle VM is based on XEN, I suppose it should work too

I have not tried it yet

Friends, I noticed that Dell does not have hardware certified to run SAP on Solaris -> http://www.saponsolaris.com/hwlist.html
However I have a quest that requires SAP -> on Solaris -> on DELL
One of the solutions was virtualized Solaris and install SAP on Solaris: SAP -> on Solaris -> on VMWare -> on DELL
In the topic below there is a mention that SAP does not support this type of installation, but without any reference to any SAP Note:

Do you know any case that could help me?
    thank you

If I understand the license policy of Oracle Solaris properly, the only valid way of running Solaris entitled is on hardware you bought by Sun/Oracle.
There is no note because it is not supported. There are no Solaris specific VMWare tools available, there will be no integration in the monitoring becaues of that and hance it's not supported officially.
We had likewise problems and we will switch all Solaris boxes to Linux subsequently.

I am planning to setup "Oracle 10g RAC setup on Solaris using vmware", but I am strucked up at installation of Soaris 10 in VMWare.
Can any body please help/provide me the document on Solaris 10 installation for RAC setup .

  • Installation Of Solaris In VMware

    Hi,
    I have a query.
What is the advantages and disadvantages of running any operating system (for eg: SOLARIS) in VMWARE(virtual machine) running on other Operating System(for eg: Windows XP).

I would suggest that you simply lump / and /usr together into at least an 8-10GB space. This assumes that you are installing an entire distribution cluster (SUNWCall or SUNWCXall). I have built some security hardened loads that require < 2GB and I'm sure I could get the footprint smaller if I had to.
I don't recall the size of an entire distribution on x86, but thought it was around 5GB for Solaris 10 for combined root and /usr.
    Cheers,

Perhaps you should go ask the people at VMware . *<- link*
It is their product that is having the problem with Solaris.
VMware has a technical support department and they also have their own online discussion forum.
( Would be asking Microsoft if you saw a similar issue with VMware and Windows? I think not.)

  • Vmware workstation 5.5/6.x and solaris 10 upd3 (11/06) panics

    Hello,
Just sending this out to see if others have seen this, I'm using VMware workstation 6.0 with the public release version of solaris 10 vmware image, patched to the latest RPC (8-15-07), so 125101-10 is the kernel in use.
the OS itself seems to operate just fine, I don't use graphical interface, so I ssh from a parent machine to get to the vmware image.
very often, when performing a cat, or like operation, I get the console message:
"vmxnet: WARNING: vmxnet0: Vxn_EncapTxBuf: 1 fragments in message, max is 1"
this causes my session to freeze and i have to restart.
This behaviour is the SAME under vmware workstation 5.5, and 6.0.
Anyone else seen this, and how to work around?
    Thank you

I managed to get the problem fixed by switching to vmware server 1.0.4. The I mounted the "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Server\solaris.iso" CD-ROM. The CD-ROM contains one file, which I unzipped, and then extracted the single tar file. After reading the doc/INSTALL file I ran the setup script. I accepted all the defaults, and after the script completed things started working fine.

  • Configure Solaris network on vmware

    Hi all
I've installed solaris on vmware and now want to configure the network so that I can ping the solaris OS from outside vm (or from the different vm)
Could you please let me know the steps of configurations?
    Thanks in advance

Please provide the name of the network adapter on your solaris vm?
Run dladm show-dev , this will show all network adapters.
If you dont see any then within vmware add a network adapter on the right network to the VM then reboot the VM and run that command again.
Then just let me know and ill proceed with next steps.

"You cannot get a Solaris simulator, but you can run Solaris under VMWare - which will allow you to "simulate" a Solaris-based computer.
This is often the method of choice if you have a brand-spanking-new laptop that cannot support Solaris directly, but can run it under a Virtual Machine image. Or you want to run several instances at once (if you have the memory!) Et cetera.
Coming from Windows, you will be in for a shock at first. Practically everything useful in Solaris is done on the command line. But that is also its power - a Solaris box can be fully configured and set up using nothing more than a serial console and network and/or install media."
VM ware is your best bet. Not only will you get a chance to experience Solaris. You will also be getting experience in a ground breaking technology. VM ware or Virtual PC is the wave of the future. This system allows you to run Multiple operating systems from one Machines. No longer must organization invest in expensive hardware to make their IT systems work. With virtualization You can purchase 1 machine and install multiple operating systems. the amount of operating systmes you can install on one machine is limited only by the resources available.
I'm also learning Solaris and I have taken the VMware route. The installation went smoothly. However I am now stuck on one part. hence my presence here.

  • Can't "source" using Solaris 10 update 3 appliance

I downloaded the Solaris 10 update 3 appliance from the Sun site. When running Bourne shell I can't source. When I do a whereis source it returns not found. Is there something missing from this Solaris 10 VMWare setup? How can I resolve this?
    Many thanks
    John

Commands like "source" that effect the shells behaviour are implemented by the shell itself. Not by programs found in your path.
The root environment on solaris is "pure" bourne shell (sh).
The list of commands it implements does not include "source" which is a csh command.
Your probably used to the bourne again (bash) shell commonly used by linux.
Which adds a large list of extensions to the sh syntax including csh-isms like source.
Anyway, if you want to use source, you need to be running a bash shell, not sh.
Alternatives are to simply manually run bash.
Or to create a "root2" user with bash as its shell, but still uid 0.
Or to login as a normal user with bash shell and use sudo to get root privilege.
You could change roots shell to bash. But I don't recommend it. I'm told it works, but it could change the effect of startup scripts or have other unintended effects.

  • Virtual Server w/Solaris as Host OS

I've got a bunch of Sun Servers (6800's, 6900's) running Solaris 9 that I'd like to turn into Virtual Servers. In other words, make one of my 16 processor 6800's into half a dozen Linux Servers. I'm having problems finding a virtual server product that can use Solaris as the host os. I've looked at Xen and VMware but they only support Linux and Windows as the host. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm an Oracle DBA and this is outside my area of expertise. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Xen does work on OpenSolaris, but it's still pretty beta and I don't think there's any support for older versions of Solaris. Vmware is not (yet) supporting Solaris as host.
You can create BrandZ zones that would support certain distributions (like redhat and centos), but again, that is a Solaris 10 only feature.
The 6800 supports domains onboard, correct? If you had a linux distribution that would boot on the hardware, I would assume that you could load it up that way. I have no idea if any of them support that hardware well.

  • Windows on Solaris

Hello! I would like to run Solaris as my main system. Sometimes I need to run Windows to do something. Any way to install Windows as virtual machine on Solaris? Vmware doesn't work. I need something to run Windows at reasonable speed...Don't want to do dual boot... Thank you.

    Hi CicoMico
I'm not sure if this directly answers your question, but as far as I understand you're looking for an alternative to VMware to run Windows on Solaris.
Here are a few options that might be helpful to you..
Solaris has its own Virtualization capabilities, the following links explain more.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solaris_Containers
    http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/utilization.jsp
    http://www.sun.com/blueprints/
    http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/ds/utilization.jsp
And I believe Xen can also be used on Solaris, the following links might be helpful as well (although it is more relavant to OpenSolaris)
    http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/xen/
Hope these links atleast point in the general direction you're looking at

  • [SOLVED/FOLLOW-UP] VMware Tools w/o desktop enviroment - any benefits?

Are there any known or perceived benefits in having VMware Tools installed in a CLI-only environment?
I recently installed Archlinux as guest OS (using VMware Workstation 6.5) and I was wondering about benefits of installing VMware Tools if I'll be running it in CLI-only mode. Some googling suggests that the network drivers installed as part of Tools improve network performance but that's everything I could dig up.
    Cheers.

    From the Workstation 6.x manual pg's 113-115 :
    http://www.vmware.com/pdf/ws6_manual.pdf
    - Passes messages from the host operating system to the guest operating system.
    - Executes commands in the operating system to cleanly shut down or restart a Linux, FreeBSD, or Solaris system when you
    select power operations in Workstation.
    - Sends a heartbeat to a VMware Server, if you use the virtual machine with VMware Server.
    - Synchronizes the time in the guest operating system with the time in the host operating system.
    - Runs scripts that help automate guest operating system operations. The scripts run when the virtual machine's power state
    changes
A set of VMware device drivers. These drivers include:
    - The vmxnet networking driver for some guest operating systems.
    - BusLogic SCSI driver for some guest operating systems.
    - VMware mouse driver.
    - A kernel module for handling shared folders, called hgfs.sys on Windows and vmhgfs on Linux and Solaris.
VMware user process. The program file is called VMwareUser.exe on Windows guests and vmware-user on Linux and
    Solaris guests.
This service performs the following tasks within the guest operating system:
    - Enables you to copy and paste text between the guest and host operating systems, and copy and paste files between
the host operating systems and Windows, Linux, and Solaris guest operating systems.
    - Enables you to drag and drop files between the host operating systems and Windows, Linux, and Solaris guest
    operating systems.
    - On Linux and Solaris guests, grabs and releases the mouse cursor when the SVGA driver is not installed.
