Solaris 10 Install Hangs at 15% on my HP DL 585
I have taken out all the additional extra cards so I am left with the basic box, it has been configured to run in Raid 1 so my four disks become two.
I can still get it to bring up a shell and do other things, but the installer just appears not to want to go pass 15%
    Help?

Which version of Solaris and how much memory do you have in the system.

  • Solaris 10 Dev. Edition - Network config issue (NIC,DHCP,Can't ping router)

I am a developer getting started with Solaris 10 configuration. I recently installed Solaris 10 and have run into an issue with network connectivity.
I have done much research on this and I was able to get communiction to the internet established once, but the settings were lost on reboot.
Overview - The Solaris box is connected to a router which is acting as a DHCP server.
    AMD 64 dual 2.6
    nForce4+ integrated NIC
    1) I am not able to obtain an address from the router. Nor do I get a respons back when I ping it. I get an IP etc if I boot into Windows so phyicial connectivity is fine.
    2) Upon reboot the device nfo0 as shown using ifconfig -a has an IP of 0.0.0.0.
    3) If I run ifconfig [hostname] my machine gets the ip from the hosts file, but I would like to obtain this from the router.
    4) NOTE - the machine shows as active on my router, but the Solaris box cannot be reached from other computers on the networ, nor do I get a reply back when pinging the router from the Solaris box.
GOAL - reach and obtain a DHCP from the router and have the changes stick upon reboot.
    /etc/hosts contents
    127.0.0.1 localhost loghost
192.168.1.55 solarisX /*<-- this is what I get when I do ifconfig nfo0 solarisX */
    /etc/hosname.nfo0
    netmask + 255.255.255.0
    solarisX
    /etc/defaultrouter
    192.168.1.254
    /et c/netmasks
    192.168.0.0 255.255.2550
    Specific Steps taken:
Using the driver nfo-2.4.5 locate at http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/ I did the following.
    % cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
    % rm obj Makefile
    % ln -s Makefile.${KARCH}_${COMPILER} Makefile
    % ln -s ${KARCH} obj
where ${KARCH} is the result of `isainfo -n`, and ${COMPILER} is
"gcc" or "suncc" which you want to use to make the driver.
    4. Testing
Testing before installation is strongly recommended.
    # cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
    # /usr/ccs/bin/make install
    # ./adddrv.sh
    # /usr/ccs/bin/make uninstall (for solaris7, don't remove the file )
    # modload obj/nfo
    # devfsadm -i nfo (for solaris7, use drvconfig and reboot with -r )
    # ifconfig nfoN plumb ( where N is an instance number, typcally 0 for first card)
    # ifconfig -a ( you will see an entry for nfoN)
    # ifconfig nfoN YOUR-HOST-NAME
    # ifconfig nfoN ( ensure IP address is correct)
    # ifconfig nfoN up ( and then you can test with ping, telnet, ftp ...)
    5. Installation
After you ensure that the nfo driver is fully functional, install it.
    (1) copy the nfo driver into the kernel directory
    # cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
    # /usr/ccs/bin/make install
If you do not test the nfo driver yet, execute the following commands:
    # ./adddrv.sh
    # devfsadm -i nfo (for solaris7, use drvconfig and reboot with -r)
    (2) Configure the network interface. Create and/or modify the following file:
    /etc/hostname.nfoN
    (3) Reboot the system.
    # init 6

Thanks Alan. I worked on trying to get the NIC working again last night. I had it working once, although the settings did not perist. I can still get the device to load, but I can't communciate with the router (it's not physical because another OS can reach it.
I took your advice and tried the sys-unconfig. But I did not have much success.
I am wondering if plopping in a new PCI NIC would be the most efficient route to get the server up.
What kind of NIC do you utilize and have had success with?
I am looking at possibly a DLINK DFE-530 or NetGear FA-311. I don't need wireless at this point just a rock solid DEV box.
Thanks again for the previous info.

  • Solaris Newbie: Install hangs @ White Screen

I am trying to install Solaris 9 on my x86 box. The configuration is a 1.2 GHz AMD chip, 256 MB RAM, 80 GB master, 40 GB Slave, DVDROM 2ndary mastar, ZIP 2ndary slave. The 80 has a Linux setup, the 40 has a big partition that has about 1 gb of swap space and the rest blank. I want to keep the 80 primary, 40 slave, remove the swap and chaos from the 40 gig, and put Solaris on it. I can set my bios to boot from the secondary drive, so that isn't a problem. The thing is when I try to install after I select the CD as the kernel source it goes to a white screen and hangs there. Any help would be appricated immensely. (or emensely?) Tch. Thanks in advance,
    the8088er

NB: If you change the X86 disk configuration as suggested, than:
set the harddisk jumper to "master" and
set the DVDROM disk jumper to "slave".
How the jumpers should be set is most often printed on the labels of the disk or on the metal near the jumperblock (for CD drives). Most often you find: ma, sl & cs (cable select)
If you can't find it there than one should look into the drive manual on on the vendor web-site.
Also, especially with older bioses, one has to reconfigure the bios to reflect the new situation.
If, with newer bioses the isa setting is set to auto-configure, than the new cofiguration will be accepted without intervention.
If, for some reason, the change result in malfunction e.g. hang during disk selection
than recheck settings (jumper & bios) or revert back to old configuration.
PS: This information might be overcomplete, but I don't want you to and up with a black screen instead of a white one.
    Good luck,
    Eric.

  • X64/x86 Solaris DVD Install hangs...

I'm installing Solaris on an AMD 4800 64x2 and I'm getting som strange behavior. When the installer is testing X, the screen scrambles and the machine freezes.
The video settings are correct: I'm using an nVidia 7800GT
I've tried taking default parameters and teaking parameters both ways (high-end to low-end).
    It always blows chunks.
    Any Ideas?

This has given me lots of grief and while I don't have an elegant answer, I did get it working.
In my case, for some reason despite putting in the correct card settings, I got the exact same behaviour - when testing X during installation, the screen scrambles and you can't recover the machine.
My workaround is to skip the testing of the X configuration during installation. You still pick the card from the card database etc, but then press F3 to skip testing (I think thats the correct key).
Let Solaris complete the installation. Upon logging in for the first time, run the Xorgconf tool located in (details at home, something like /usr/X11/...) and go through the configuration process again. ie pick card from the card database. At the end it will write a conf file - xorg.conf (again, details at home).
To get X to start automatically, then run the dtlogin(?) command (again details at home!!) which configures how you want X to be started.

You do not need anti-virus software on a Mac.  In general anti-malware software just wastes resources, and has been known to slow down a Mac, interfere with normal options, and in some cases panic a Mac.
Mac OS X comes with its own anti-malware features that work rather well.
You have a lot of other 3rd party additions on your Mac, listed under kernel extensions, launch agents, launch daemons, login items, startup items.  If you do not need them, you should consider removing them (genieo first and as soon as possible).
    Also I would not expect
      [failed] com.apple.coreservices.appleid.authentication.plist
to fail, as that is Apple provided.  You might consider starting up in Safe Mode and seeing if that still fails (Safe Mode does not start 3rd party additions at boot/login time)
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>
if Safe Mode EtreCheck does not report it as failed, then this may be an interaction with the other 3rd party additions you are running.  If it still fails in safe mode maybe you should do some Google research to see if it is a known issue and if someone else has a fix for it.

  • Linux 9i install hangs at Net Config Assistant

I am installing 9i on Red Had 7.3 and the install program just stops when it gets to the Net Configuration Assistant. No err, but the process using up > 90% of the CPU. All the buttons on the install GUI are greyed out, so there is no way to go with the install of the rest of the tools.
In the install I also had an make err with OraHome1/ctx/lib/ins_ctx.mk.
Can you help me out with this?
    Regards, Cary

I found the solution to the ins_ctx.mk issue at http://www.puschitz.com/OracleOnLinux.shtml. To cut to the issue, here is what worked:
Edit $ORACLE_HOME/ctx/lib/env_ctx.mk and go to "INSO_LINK =", add a "$(LDLIBFLAG)dl" to the line and save it.
Here is the full line with the added "$(LDLIBFLAG)dl" flag:
    INSO_LINK = -L$(CTXLIB) $(LDLIBFLAG)m $(LDLIBFLAG)dl $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ca $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_fa $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ex $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_da $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ut $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_ch $(LDLIBFLAG)sc_fi $(LLIBCTXHX) $(LDLIBFLAG)c -Wl,-rpath,$(CTXHOME)lib $(CORELIBS) $(COMPEOBJS)
After that hit retry in the error popup.
If you go to the page, the requied entry is bolded in the section where it has been added (its the third entry), making it much easier to see.
The page is an excellent guide to installing Oracle. However, it did not offer guidance to the Net Configuration problem, which I am also encountering. Anyone else have any info?

  • Fresh install of solaris 10 x86 hangs after 'Configuring devices'

    Hi All,
I just received a new SuperMicro server with an LSI MegaRAID SAS 9261-8i controller. While trying to install Solaris 10 it hangs after "Configuring devices". I checked the LSI page and Solaris 10 is supported according to them. Any ideas how to proceed?
Fairly new to Solaris on x86 hardware.
The system has a Xeon X5690 processor in an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC motherboard. The motherboard documents claim that not disabling usb 2.0 can hang an install. I have disabled the usb 2.0 in the bios but the system still hangs. Booting it with the -kd and -kv options don't give much information.
Any help is appreciated. I might be returning these machines if I can't get this worked out.
    Cheers,
    Steve

See if you can add the verbose option "-v" to the kernel boot options. I think you can get to the GRUB menu off the Solaris 10 install disk. That should tell you what device is causing the hang, or at least the last device that worked.
Also, can you try Solaris 11 and see if it gets past that point? A few years ago I has a similar issue with Solaris 10 on a Dell server. Solaris 11/OpenSolaris worked fine, though. IIRC I could work around the issue if I disabled the 2nd CPU - Solaris 10 had a problem bringing up the 2nd CPU on that Dell's CPU/MB config.

  • Solaris 10 (6/06 SPARC) - Network install

    Hello all :)
I downloaded the newest ISO, burned it. and tryed to execute the setup_install_server.
it tries to find Boot directory (its linked to Boot -> ../../../s1)
    but the link is broken.
in the X86 installation the link exists and not broken so i can run the script.
looks like the newest ISO does not contains all the stuff we need to install it from network.
I hope im wrong :) i want to install those SPARCs....

    Moin!
I did also download the most recent (DVD) ISO did a setup_install_server
and didn't have that problem. I did however skip the burn step and instead
mounted the ISO directly via loopback devices:
    # lofiadm -a /jumpstart/OS/isos/sol-10-u2-ga-sparc-dvd.iso
    /dev/lofi/7
    # mount -F hsfs -o ro /dev/lofi/7 /mnt/10u2
When looking at the files system of this mount the Boot directory is not
linked and as said the setup_install_server worked fine.
    Hope this helps

(If you had pasted the output using the CODE tag,
it would have put the format into a readable layout, by the way)
Your information is a typical output from the device detection tool.
Your VIA audio chipset is incompatible and you'll need to install a sound card if you want to hear anything.
Both of your network devices will require third-party drivers.
You will need to install them separately.
The NIC's will not work natively in Solaris 10.

    Spend some time with it.

  • VM server 2.1 install not setup network

I try to connect to a VM Server from VM Manager server. It failed and I found out that the network is not configured during the VM Server installation.
So I do a clean installation again and realized that the installation somehow skipped the part prompting for network configuration (after the part "Select Master Boot Record (MBR) or First sector of boot partition as the location to install the boot loader."). It gos to the time zone selection screen directly.
Not sure what cause the skipping of the VM Server 2.1 installation program but I am sure the only network card in the box is working because I can use the internet when boot up the Windows XP in another drive.
If I want to manually configure the network, should I just go to the network config file. Do I need to deal with extra config in the Xen setup (not sure this question make sense) ?
The network card is Realtek RTL8168/8111 Gigabit PCI-E ethernet NIC. May need to install and load the driver as a module ?
    All suggestion are appreciated.

  • Solaris 10 install ZFS dependencies not satisfied in default group

I'm installing solaris 10 (No I'm not allowed to upgrade to 11) on VMware and I'm trying to keep the installation small. I'm attempting to install the "Reduced Networking Group" but I get this error:
"The default packages included in the selected metacluster do not satisfy the dependencies of the options you have selected. You must select "Custom" and resolve these dependencies. The following dependency has been created:
    1. ZFS(Usr) in "Zettabyte File System" depends on "The Python interpreter, libraries and utilities" in "GNOME Runtime".
So I tried doing the Custom install and selecting that dependency, but it creates another 3 dependencies. Which in turn create 5 more dependencies etc.
I tried searching google, but couldn't find any information about it. How do I get around this?

That's the MBR label on the disk. That's easy to modify with fdisk.
Inside the Solaris partition is another (VTOC) label. That one is harder to modify. It's what you see when you run 'format' -> 'print' -> 'partition' or 'prtvtoc'.
To resize it, the only method I'm aware of is to record the slices somewhere, then destroy the label or run 'format -e' and create a new label for the autodetect device. Once you have the new label in place, you can recreate the old slices. All the data on the disk should be stable.
Then you can make use of the space on the disk for new slices, for enlarging the last slice, or if you have a VM of some sort managing the disk.

  • Portal install hangs at 61%

I have install ias9 on several machines using different Linux distributions and they all seem to hang at 61% of the portal configuration assistant install. I am now trying it on a P-III 1Ghz with 512MB ram and it has been sittingat 61% for about 6 hours. CPU usage still at 100%.
    null

I too downloaded the 9iAS installation for Linux from OTN. I am also experiencing the same problem you are...here's an excerpt from the $ORACLE_HOME/assistants/opca/install.log:
    ...Importing component: ID = 1076115684 Name = RPT_PDETAILS Owner = PEOPLE_APP Type = AREPORT
    ...Importing component: ID = 1065830443 Name = RPT_SEARCH Owner = PEOPLE_APP Type = AREPORT
    ... Installing SCOTT Data
    ...Building demonstration tables. Please wait.
    ...attempting to create user scott/tiger
It appears that SCOTT has already been created, data installed, and then tries to create the user again...SCOTT already exists and the install hangs.
What I did to get around this is open a separate xterm and executed:
    tail -f $ORACLE_HOME/assistants/opca/install.log
Then when it got to the point shown above where it was trying to create SCOTT I opened up another xterm and executed:
    ps -ef
    It showed me (excerpt):
    oracle 31208 31197 0 00:38 pts/2 00:00:02 /u02/app/oracle/jre/1.1.8/bin/li
    oracle 31209 31197 0 00:38 pts/2 00:00:16 /u02/app/oracle/jre/1.1.8/bin/li
    oracle 31211 31197 0 00:38 pts/2 00:00:00 /u02/app/oracle/jre/1.1.8/bin/li
    oracle 31286 31211 0 01:27 pts/2 00:00:01 ../../bin/sqlplus
    oracle 31303 1 1 01:52 ? 00:00:00 xterm -fg white -bg black -sl 20
    oracle 31305 31303 0 01:52 pts/1 00:00:00 bash
    oracle 31315 31305 0 01:53 pts/1 00:00:00 ps -ef
I assumed that process 31286 was the one trying to recreate SCOTT. I double checked that the user did exist by querying DBA_USERS from another box and the user did in fact exist. So I killed process 31286 with a gracefull exit request:
    kill 31286
...and the install continued until 100% completion. Note that after the install was completed, the processor on my database box was pegged at 100%. I had to kill the process on the database side that was trying to recreate SCOTT. Looks like the Portal install script isn't quite right for the 9iAS for Linux install I pulled down from OTN.
I have yet to attempt to connect to the Portal installtion as it was late and I needed to get some sleep. I will try to connect to the Portal installation this evening to determine if it was a success.
    I hope this information helps.
My question to Mr. Lincks is: Have you perform this installation on the Linux platform? If so, was the installation performed from media supplied by Oracle? I too have performed the installation several times on Solaris and on NT with downloads from OTN, however, I did not have a problem like this one from the Linux download.
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Solaris 9 install problem

I'm having a problem installing Solaris 9 on my ultrasparc IIi 440MHz system. I'm installing from CDs burned from the free iso download from Sun. Everything seems to be going fine until disc Software 2 of 2 where the web start install hangs. I can't figure out how to get to the command line, check for errors, or what to do next. Does the reverse DNS need to be functioning in order to continue? Also, the box has a link light but I am unable to ping it. Is that normall at this stage of the install?
Didn't run itno this problem with Solaris 8 on an identical box. Please help.

I was under the impression that the install would concatenate the hostname and domain entries for the full host name. This should be the case if your machine would have found a valid DNS configuration.
Am I supposed to add the trailing dot to the domain? Some installation methods you can add dot and some others you can't.
Best is to leave the dot and fix DNS.
Ping (w/ IP Address or Hostname ?)Ping IP should work, Ping Hostname or FQHN would not work if your machine does not know how to present itself.
