Solaris 10 installation - 3/05 release

Hello,
I have Sol 8 running on a Blade 150. Last year I downloaded the 3/05 release of Sol 10 and burned it to DVD. I am thinking of finally upgrading to Sol 10. Two questions:
1) Should I install the 3/05 release from my DVD, or download the latest 11/06 release and make a new DVD?
2) If I install the 3/05 release, can I use Patch Manager or some such tool to upgrade to the latest Sol 10 version?
Thank you,
BR

I would be on the safe side and downloading the latest release 11/06. Newer features have been added.
Also note that applying patches to an older release does not bring the OS up to current release. It only fixes bugs.
It could burn you later in life with the release of newer equipment that require higher release levels.

    My bad...
When reading the initial posts, I only saw "older releases".
I must have only used one eye to read them and somehow thought the inquiry was for Solaris 8.
I just didn't see any of those references to Solaris 10 in the posting.
Yes. the March 2005 release is the first General Availability (GA) release of Solaris 10.
While it may have first become available in a limited form to some people, sometime in January of that year, the official date on the GA Release is 3/05.

  • No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation

Hi all, I have a problem when trying to install Solaris 8 (Intel) on my PC. There are some funny things happened while installing the OS.
1.) My motherboard does not support booting from CD-ROM, so I downloaded a Device Assistant Boot Disk to boot it up. Then I use dd.exe to make the boot disk from the image, I have tried many times that after creating the boot disk, this boot disk will contain 512 bytes of bad sector. So why?
2.) After using this boot disk to boot up and install the OS, before entering to the detection of the bus type stuff (still on the white screen), at the bottom of the screen, it says "ata_command select failed ... ...", what does this mean?
3.) When the system go back to the white screen with language selection, I choose English (which is 1), and the system try to find my hard disk, but it failed and says "No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation" with a new line saying "installation documenation found.". So what is happening?
    Appreciate for any help.

    Hi
After successful installation of 9ias release 2 version 9.0.2.0.1 in the service following services are missing (oracle_home9ias122http_server , form server and reportserver ) which has to be present as per old version installation but in new version(9.0.2.0.1) it is not there is anyone has any idea regarding this what one should do to get those sevices ready.

Since you don't mention operating system, we assume you use Microsoft Windows something-or-other.
In which case, you open a command prompt, enter
    sqlplus /nolog
    connect / as sysdba
    startup
    exit
and post the entire console session.
(Replacing the 'something-or-other' with 'version and service pack' in our public knowledge base would be very useful as well.)

You are probably using the INSTALL CD that comes with Solaris x86.
Don't use it but use the Software CD 1/1 to boot and install the system instead. The INSTALL CD is supposed to be used on a completely blank system (no other OS's) although even there I think Software CD 1/1 does the job.
Also, if you are new to Solaris I advice you to get the FAQ (you can find it on e.g. http://www.science.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2- it should be really helpfull during the first few weeks/months on Solaris

  • Firefox 5 Installation Notes And Release Notes

I am running Linux - Fedora 14 and Firefox 4.0.1 and was going to download Firefox 5.0.
    When I type www.firefox.com I am re-directed to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/ which has a link for "Firefox 5.0 for Linux i686".
Underneath the download link are links for "All Systems & Languages" and "Privacy Policy".
There is no link provided for Installation Instructions nor Release Notes like there has usually been on the download page.

I am not a Linux user, but a simple Google search "firefox 5 release notes" (including quotes), found this page: https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/5.0/releasenotes/ and there is a link on that page for the system requirements: https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/5.0/system-requirements/

  • Is Perl part of default Solaris Installation ?

Is Perl part of default/standard Solaris Installation ?

Perl has been in Solaris in /usr/bin since Solaris 8. I am not completely certain, but I believe it is included in all metaclusters including the minimal Core cluster.

  • Solaris installation

I'm trying to install solaris 8 intel version on a custom made pc. During the process the following message comes up: < skipping system dump dump device not configured
rebooting....> and the hangs on for ever. It's like the machine is frozen. I have to start the process again. I did it many times and the same message keeps showing up.and the process stops. can any helps please?

The Solaris kernel receives a kernel panic.
The interesting part of the panic is the information printed before the
"skipping system dump..." line. This should give a hint what sort of the problem
    the kernel has...
You may want to try to boot the kernel with kadb and the "-v" option:
Boot from the "Software 1 of 2" CD, and at the "1 Solaris Interactive 2 Custom
    JumpStart" prompt type
    b kadb -v
What does kadb print, when the Solaris kernel receives the panic?
What version of Solaris 8 x86 are you installing? Is it the latest Solaris 8 2/2002
release, or some older release? Tell us about your hardware specs. Does the
system use a Pentium 4 CPU?
A wild guess is that you're installing an old version of Solaris 8 on a system
with a Pentium 4 CPU. That's not supported, you need the 7/2001 release or
newer (or use the following workaround: http://www.zvenigorod.ru/solaris8x86/p4trick.htm ).
But, that's just a wild guess. There could be other reasons why the machine
    panics.

  • Which Name Service for Solaris installation behind router?

I want to install Solaris on my computer in a small home LAN behind a router.
The Solaris computer is not part of a zone, a domain and there is no own DNS server in LAN.
I want Solaris to get the DNS from router which in turn gets the DNS server assignments from network provider.
This is similar to a Windows installation which gets the current DNS servers defintion from network provider at connection startup.
Now what do I have to select during Solaris installation? See attached snapshot
I guess LDAP, NIS and NIS+ are not suitable.
Do I have to select "None"?
Does DNS mean "own DNS server in LAN" or "DNS from router" (as intended)?
    Thank you
    Peter

    Hello
I don't know you home setup but in general you will have to use DCHP so solaris will get all info from the route the ip and dns etc..
If you want to use a static ip you will have to config the DNS by hand.
