Solaris 10 installation freezes

Hello
im trying to install solaris 10 on a Sun ultra 10, but everytime i come to the language selection it just freezes and dont respond, if i press stop+a i get a prompt.
any one have any clues?
Cheers
Martin

Have you tried text-mode (non-gui) installation?
I do installation of Solaris 10 on VMWare many times, but I never had the problem you describe although I usually do text-mode installation since I don't have much memory assigned to Solaris 10. hopefull, this works for you.

  • Solaris 10 installation freeze

hi, I'am triying to install solaris 10 on a set of new servers, installation goes smooth, screen shows perfectly, and graphics are apparently ok, however, on the first boot, the computer freezes on the login screen, we get a black screen with a thick pink line at the top and it freezes.
Also, I noticed that even if we change the driver, monitor and resolution to be used on the installation process, this is not the info that is used when booting the OS.
I ran the SUN OS hardware utility and it shows everything but network and audio are fine. I disabled both on the BIOS, also the USB interfaces were shut down on the BIOS. Motherboard is an AsRock ConRoe945G-DVI. (the DVI card is not installed)

x86, after the installation reboots the system, it goes trough all the starting process, but when loading X, it freezes with a thick pink line at the top.
I managed to solve the problem by breaking the process, changing the video frequency made it send an error and give me a prompt; after i got this prompt i used kdmconfig -u and kdmconfig -c and changet from xserver to xsun and rebooted. this worked preferctly.
however, it would be great if we were able to choose (simply) which x to use, from the beginning; also, the drivers and setup we chose during the installation process is ONLY for the installation process, as we noticed by checking the X config files that the drivers and setup we chose during the install was not the ones in those conf files.

  • X86 solaris 10 installation freeze

    Hi,
I have an intel 820 chipset motherboard with a 600Mhz CPU.
When trying to install solaris 10 I get to the "Discovering additional network configuration..." message, then it freezes.
I've tried minimising the hardware, but to no avail.
I do get a warning about a resource conflict, but these appear to be integral components of the motherboard, such as host bridge and bios flash. When I try removing them from the solaris component list, I do get past the above message, but I don't have a working keyboard.
    Any ideas?

No, something is wrong is the Solaris install. Sun is merely maintaining their x86 driver ignorance that they've had since Solaris 2.6 x86. "I can see every detail about your card - maker, chipset, version, memory - oh, but I have no clue how to initialize it, so I'll just lock up the installation" That's not the fault of the video card.
Anyway, I want to second the option for #4. That was the only way that I could get Solaris 10 x86 to install, even on industry-standard hardware. Very, very frustrating.

  • [Solaris 10] Installation problem on nForce4 Ultra - SATA II - raid 0

    hi,
Like I was read on HW web page, Solaris 10 should work fine with 'nForce4' (without 'Ultra'),
but on mine mainboard (nForce4 Ultra) instalator was unable to found my array.
I have ASUS A8N-E (nForce4 Ultra) with 2x 250GB Seagate on SATA II RAID 0.
Is it posible to install this OS on 'nForce4 Ultra' or maybe I am doing sth wrong ?

It always stop or freeze on the "dos" screen after I select "interactive" installation.

  • Solaris 8 installation problem on an Intel base PC

I'm quite new with Solaris. I got stuck in Solaris 8 installation just at almost the very beginning. After booting up the system from floppy and conituing pressing F2 and selecting booting from CD, I got an error message like:
    cannot mount on pci@0; 0/pci-ide@7; 1/ide01/sd@0; 0:a
    panic[cpu0]thread=FEC17440 vfs:mountroot
then, the system reboots itself again and again every time it reaches this point. I guess it's a problem with my CD-ROM. But the problem persists even if I change CD-ROM or move CD-ROM from secondary master to primary slave, etc. I also tried to change harddisk, but did no good to the problem. Is there any experienced users who could provide me with some solutions?
I'm using a system with: Pentium 133, 32 MB Ram, 4GB HDD, 3C905TX, ATI Rage II PCI, Matshita CR-587 CD-ROM, Serial mouse and so on. I also tried another system with: P III 450, Asus P3BF, 192MB Ram, Pioneer DVD-ROM, same HDD, and so on. The problem was still there with the latter system. However, I successfully installed Solaris 7 with the latter system before. Why can't it work with Solaris 8?
Thanks a lot for the help.

I've been having the exact same problems on a PowerEdge 500SC. I have managed to get Solaris up and running on the machine, however. I booted the DCA from the floppy disk and installed from the CD-ROM. When the DCA is ready to scan for devices I use the "Specific Scan" option to tell it to look for specific devices. I tell it to scan for all devices in the listing and in doing so the DCA finds ISA-based IDE controllers. After it provides a listing of the devices it found I use the "Device Tasks" option and the "View/Edit Devices" menu item then delete the Bus Mastering IDE controller device. Once the screen comes up to ask for a boot device, the drives will show up as on the ISA controllers.
I have to go through this process every time I boot the machine but I am able to make the system run at least.
I haven't figured out the ACPI problem, yet.

    Doug

  • Not able to add driver update during Solaris 10 installation on IBM x3550

I am facing a problem with installation of Solaris 10 on IBM x3550.
My question is not specific to IBM server.
I am trying to add SAS driver during Solaris 10 installation. I selected option "Apply device driver update" (option # 4). It is asking to insert driver disk. But only showing floppy (f) and cdrom (c).
IBM server 3550 doesnt have floppy drive and I have the driver image only in a USB stick. Unfortunately, Solaris 10 installation is not showing usb device during driver installation.
Is there any way we can add usb device to the driver update disk list??
    Thanks in advance.

  • Windows 7 installation freezes at "Completing installation"

    Hi!
I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my mid-2010 Macbook Pro 13". I'm running Lion and have installed all avaliable updates.
I've created the partition in BootCamp and the installation starts but when it gets to "completing installation", just after the computer has rebooted the installation freezes and I'm forced to shut down the computer.
    This is what I've tried:
    * To burn several different Windows 7 iso file on DVD's with different speed (from the disk utilities).
    * Remove all USB connections (which is none since I've a wireless mouse)
Then I've no idea what to do more
One thing that could be the reason is that I (before trying to install Windows 7) had to repair my hard drive (which I did from the disk utilities) and I might have done some sort of misstake there...
    Please help!

No help needed anymore, finally managed to install it
The solution was (probably) to eject the CD when the computer reboots and then continue the installation as normal.
I'm not 100% sure this was the solution but anyways, now I've Windows installed.

  • Solaris 8 installation in Dell 8100 met "Resource Confilict"

    Hello There,
During I installated Solaris 8 in Dell Dimension 8100, I received the warning message:
"Resource Conflict: both devices are added.
    NON-ACPI device:PNP0c01

    Memory: 9FC00-9FFFF, 3f87000-7F86FFF, FFFB0000-FFBFFFFF, FFC00000-FFFFFFFF."
How can I recovery this "CONFLICT".
    Thanks very much !!!
    Jack

AFAIK, this is a warning and can be ignored. But on dell
systems there a lot of other problems that can prevent
a successful solaris 8 installation (dell keyboard problems,
problems with a panic when the system include a 3com
    3c905c NIC, ACPI problems, ...).

  • Adobe Reader 9 installation freezes computer

upon running the installation for adobe reader 9, setup gets to 99.90 percent, then a new window comes up, similar to the installation window. Estimated time remaining gets to 9 seconds, then the installation freezes, and so does everything else. A cold reboot is required...
I'm currently using foxit reader to read PDFs (Also, programs that print to PDF files cause a similar freeze.
    Computer details:
    Vista 32 bit Home premium.
    3gb ram
300+gb hard disk space more than 50gb free
    Dell inspiron 530 desktop
Spyware doctor - Avira antivir - and Threatfire installed
Interestingly enough, this is being typed in an open firefox window as the installer is frozen, along with the desktop and taskbar.
    Additional details:
Reader (at that time version 8)
Along with PDFcreator both worked perfectly on my system
After reinstalling windows to clear my system *and changing antivirus to Avira - note no security issues are flagged by avira when installer runs*
Pdf creator went buggy. Pdfs printed by PDF creator would freeze when Reader tried opening them. (Although after restarting the system those same pdfs could be opened)
An attempt to repair the Adobe reader installation for version 8 failed, Then Opening Reader alone would freeze my computer. And I had to crudely uninstall Reader as a result. *May have left files - but I've scoured the Temp folders for them*
Anyway, installing adobe reader 9 then led to the error. (Interestingly, adobe reader 9 did appear installed after a cold reboot, and worked, however it dissapeared after the next normall restart.
&I've tried installing using a new acc, same error.
    &FOxit reader works
&Adobe version 8 does not appear on my system.
&All normal computer functions seem to work..(Although a video on Gamespot recently displayed buggy stuff, not related i think)
    &Installations of other programs work
&i've tried installing in a different directory
&Spyware doc, Threatfire, and Avira scans come up clean.
    Just restarted *cold reboot*
The system took a long time to shut down *held the power button for longer*
And the hard disk didnt stop spinning for a very long time...
It also took a very long time to start the computer
Also, running an installer makes me undo the changes made by the adobe reader 9 installation, since it was suspeneded.

Use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup to remove vestiges of any version of
Reader in your Registry. Then turn off all antivirus and spyware
    programs. Then try to re-install

  • Solaris 9/Installation in UltraSparc

    Hi,
Im trying to install a Solaris 9 OS in a Sun Fire v240 machine.
First I introduced a clear SCSI HDD and the Installation DVD in the DVD PCI device. Whe I did 'boot' in the OPROM prompt it seemed 'Bad magic nuber in disk label. Cant open disk label package. Evaluating: . Cant open boot device'. When I did 'boot cdrom' it answered 'Boot device: /pci@1e600000/ide@d/cdrom 0,0 f File and args: . Boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix Enter filename [kernel/sparcv9/unix]:'
Then I formatted the HDD into a ufs format. And now when I do again 'boot cdrom' it answered me 'Boot device: /pci@1e600000/ide@d/cdrom 0,0 f File and args: . Boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix Enter filename [kernel/sparcv9/unix]:
SCSI HDD and IDE DVD are correctly connected. Installation CD Solaris 9 is original.
I even proved with a original Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 installation CD with the same results...
How can I do a correct installation of Solaris??
    Thanks you!!

Q1: Am I doing the right steps?Yes, assuming you made no error writing the iso images to blank CDs. Make sure to use the "write cd from
iso image file" function in you cd writing software.
You can also try to boot from the "Software 1 of 2" CD. It's bootable, too.
Q2: Can I boot the Solaris 9 installation from the A drive, is there any way to create the boot floppy diskette(s) for it?Yes, the CD "Software 2 of 2" contains a 1.44MB boot floppy image, in file /Solaris_9/Tools/d1_image
Write the image to a formatted floppy, using the msdos "rawrite.exe" or "dd.exe" utility.

I don't think the test-scsi command is viable for that platform.
The FC disks are "viewed" by the system as external to the SCSI controller, almost as if they were in a multi-pack.
They are FC drives addressed by the chipset as SCSI disks.
    Try:
    <pre>probe-scsi-all</pre>
    Edit:
Which release of Solaris 10 are you trying to install?
Older releases that might be fine for V480's won't work on V490's.

  • Solaris 10 installation failure from cd's

    Hi All,
I am attempting to install Solaris 10 on my x86 laptop. I run the installation from cd #1 and go through the steps and installation will begin. I am choosing to install the entire distribution and when cd #1 finishes (about 500 mb of the 4000mb) the machine is not prompting for the other cd's. The machine will simply reboot and give "Solaris 10 installation partially failed."
Upon reboot the grub screen appears and it will load and then fail.
Any ideas? Am I missing a step somewhere? Thanks.

  • Solaris 10 installation package

    Hi,
I wonder if there is an installation version other than DVD or CD?
    I went to http://www.sun.com/download/sdl.jsp?5005588c-36f3-11d6-9cec-fc96f718e113=1
and only see DVD or CD ISO version.
I plan to connect an external hard drive to reinstall Solaris 10 to my sun fire X2100. So I guess I need a just software version of Solaris 10 installation.
    thanks,
    Feng

    Thanks the hints.
I successfully unpack the sol-10-u4-ga-sparc-dvd-iso-a file to an external USB drive.
I have a sun fire 2100 box, which is pre-insalled Solaris 10. Since its' OS can't go to root mode, Sun technician suggested me to over write the OS by a fresh Solaris 10 installation.
I am using Hyper terminal software as a terminal console to connect to that Sun box.
In Bios setting, the First Boot Device is "removable". Is it right?
I am trying to use F2 when system is rebooted and that supposes to lead me to install Solaris 10 from my USB external drive.
But my system always go back the preinstalled OS. What is the correct steps to install a new Solaris OS to over write the existing Solaris OS?
    thanks,
