I was finally able to install Solaris 10 on MS Vitual
PC 2007 using the mount iso option, but it runs very
slow, very.
So i thought i could burn the iso image and install
it from the DVD. The bios is set to boot from the
DVD but won't pick up the image (wont 'boot/load
Solaris ). Tried using nero to make bootable DVD but
the Solaris 10 DVD iso is to large (over 2 gigs).
Should the Solaris 10 DVD image when burned to DVD
boot like it did when i mounted and installed from
inside MS Vitual PC 2007?
If not what needs to be done to make a bootable
DVD?
thanks

Burning DVD with Nero will work when you select Nero Smart Start>Copy and Backup>Burn Image to Disc. (Not through Nero Burning ROM)
So it installed from the DVD !

  • Solaris 8 installation problem on an Intel base PC

I'm quite new with Solaris. I got stuck in Solaris 8 installation just at almost the very beginning. After booting up the system from floppy and conituing pressing F2 and selecting booting from CD, I got an error message like:
    cannot mount on pci@0; 0/pci-ide@7; 1/ide01/sd@0; 0:a
    panic[cpu0]thread=FEC17440 vfs:mountroot
then, the system reboots itself again and again every time it reaches this point. I guess it's a problem with my CD-ROM. But the problem persists even if I change CD-ROM or move CD-ROM from secondary master to primary slave, etc. I also tried to change harddisk, but did no good to the problem. Is there any experienced users who could provide me with some solutions?
I'm using a system with: Pentium 133, 32 MB Ram, 4GB HDD, 3C905TX, ATI Rage II PCI, Matshita CR-587 CD-ROM, Serial mouse and so on. I also tried another system with: P III 450, Asus P3BF, 192MB Ram, Pioneer DVD-ROM, same HDD, and so on. The problem was still there with the latter system. However, I successfully installed Solaris 7 with the latter system before. Why can't it work with Solaris 8?
Thanks a lot for the help.

I've been having the exact same problems on a PowerEdge 500SC. I have managed to get Solaris up and running on the machine, however. I booted the DCA from the floppy disk and installed from the CD-ROM. When the DCA is ready to scan for devices I use the "Specific Scan" option to tell it to look for specific devices. I tell it to scan for all devices in the listing and in doing so the DCA finds ISA-based IDE controllers. After it provides a listing of the devices it found I use the "Device Tasks" option and the "View/Edit Devices" menu item then delete the Bus Mastering IDE controller device. Once the screen comes up to ask for a boot device, the drives will show up as on the ISA controllers.
I have to go through this process every time I boot the machine but I am able to make the system run at least.
I haven't figured out the ACPI problem, yet.

    Doug

  • [Solaris 10] Installation problem on nForce4 Ultra - SATA II - raid 0

    hi,
Like I was read on HW web page, Solaris 10 should work fine with 'nForce4' (without 'Ultra'),
but on mine mainboard (nForce4 Ultra) instalator was unable to found my array.
I have ASUS A8N-E (nForce4 Ultra) with 2x 250GB Seagate on SATA II RAID 0.
Is it posible to install this OS on 'nForce4 Ultra' or maybe I am doing sth wrong ?

Hi, I have the similiar problems on Solaris 10 installation.
    I have a Compaq SR1710 AMD Sempron™ + 1GB RAM. I am trying make it a mini workstation.
However, the installation was never able to throught.
It always stop or freeze on the "dos" screen after I select "interactive" installation.
The last error message I got was something "Skipped rtls01" something.

  • Not able to add driver update during Solaris 10 installation on IBM x3550

I am facing a problem with installation of Solaris 10 on IBM x3550.
My question is not specific to IBM server.
I am trying to add SAS driver during Solaris 10 installation. I selected option "Apply device driver update" (option # 4). It is asking to insert driver disk. But only showing floppy (f) and cdrom (c).
IBM server 3550 doesnt have floppy drive and I have the driver image only in a USB stick. Unfortunately, Solaris 10 installation is not showing usb device during driver installation.
Is there any way we can add usb device to the driver update disk list??
    Thanks in advance.

AFAIK, this is a warning and can be ignored. But on dell

  • Solaris 9/Installation in UltraSparc

    Hi,
Im trying to install a Solaris 9 OS in a Sun Fire v240 machine.
First I introduced a clear SCSI HDD and the Installation DVD in the DVD PCI device. Whe I did 'boot' in the OPROM prompt it seemed 'Bad magic nuber in disk label. Cant open disk label package. Evaluating: . Cant open boot device'. When I did 'boot cdrom' it answered 'Boot device: /pci@1e600000/ide@d/cdrom 0,0 f File and args: . Boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix Enter filename [kernel/sparcv9/unix]:'
Then I formatted the HDD into a ufs format. And now when I do again 'boot cdrom' it answered me 'Boot device: /pci@1e600000/ide@d/cdrom 0,0 f File and args: . Boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix Enter filename [kernel/sparcv9/unix]:
SCSI HDD and IDE DVD are correctly connected. Installation CD Solaris 9 is original.
I even proved with a original Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 installation CD with the same results...
How can I do a correct installation of Solaris??
    Thanks you!!

Q1: Am I doing the right steps?Yes, assuming you made no error writing the iso images to blank CDs. Make sure to use the "write cd from
iso image file" function in you cd writing software.
You can also try to boot from the "Software 1 of 2" CD. It's bootable, too.
Q2: Can I boot the Solaris 9 installation from the A drive, is there any way to create the boot floppy diskette(s) for it?Yes, the CD "Software 2 of 2" contains a 1.44MB boot floppy image, in file /Solaris_9/Tools/d1_image
Write the image to a formatted floppy, using the msdos "rawrite.exe" or "dd.exe" utility.

I don't think the test-scsi command is viable for that platform.
The FC disks are "viewed" by the system as external to the SCSI controller, almost as if they were in a multi-pack.
They are FC drives addressed by the chipset as SCSI disks.
    Try:
    <pre>probe-scsi-all</pre>
    Edit:
Which release of Solaris 10 are you trying to install?
Older releases that might be fine for V480's won't work on V490's.

  • Solaris 10 installation failure from cd's

    Hi All,
I am attempting to install Solaris 10 on my x86 laptop. I run the installation from cd #1 and go through the steps and installation will begin. I am choosing to install the entire distribution and when cd #1 finishes (about 500 mb of the 4000mb) the machine is not prompting for the other cd's. The machine will simply reboot and give "Solaris 10 installation partially failed."
Upon reboot the grub screen appears and it will load and then fail.
Any ideas? Am I missing a step somewhere? Thanks.

  • Solaris 10 installation package

    Hi,
I wonder if there is an installation version other than DVD or CD?
    I went to http://www.sun.com/download/sdl.jsp?5005588c-36f3-11d6-9cec-fc96f718e113=1
and only see DVD or CD ISO version.
I plan to connect an external hard drive to reinstall Solaris 10 to my sun fire X2100. So I guess I need a just software version of Solaris 10 installation.
    thanks,
    Feng

    Thanks the hints.
I successfully unpack the sol-10-u4-ga-sparc-dvd-iso-a file to an external USB drive.
I have a sun fire 2100 box, which is pre-insalled Solaris 10. Since its' OS can't go to root mode, Sun technician suggested me to over write the OS by a fresh Solaris 10 installation.
I am using Hyper terminal software as a terminal console to connect to that Sun box.
In Bios setting, the First Boot Device is "removable". Is it right?
I am trying to use F2 when system is rebooted and that supposes to lead me to install Solaris 10 from my USB external drive.
But my system always go back the preinstalled OS. What is the correct steps to install a new Solaris OS to over write the existing Solaris OS?
    thanks,
    Feng

  • Solaris 10 Installation CDs

    Hi,
I have downloaded solaris 10 installation CDs from site, verified them with checksums and burnt then into 700MB CDs. When I put the first one into CD-Rom and issue "boot cdrom" it prompt smthing like:
there is no executable file ...
    What is the problem?

    ... In MS Windows ...
    I double-click an ISO file.
It launches whatever program might be installed on my computer
that is associated with burning-to-disk (Nero, Roxio, Isobuster, whatever).
I pick a speed that I might want this time, such as 8x, and simply proceed.
    It just works.
The program figures it all out for me.
That's how I've burned ISO files from all sorts of sources for the last eight years.
I double-click, and it just works.
Are you sure you downloaded the images for CD's
and not the five pieces of DVD that need to be joined before burning ?

  • GRUB and Solaris 10 installation with WinXP

    Hi All,
I am new to Solaris 10 and want to install it on my PC.(Intel81845GVM-RZ Motherboard,256 mb RAM,80gb Hard disk)I am comfortable with installations on Sparc m/c but this GRUB bootloader is all new to me.I am not able to find any good document explaining X86 installations for solaris which include GRUB bootloader. How should I go about? Will it be possible for me to install WinXP+Solaris togather? If yes, kindly guide me in detail as to how should i go about doing it?will it be possible only wen I enhance my RAM to say 1 gb?How should I go about it then if I make it 1gb.How will i get GRUB bootloader??too many questions ....but then..consider me being new to solaris that too on X86.Sparc is easier and I have done it too.I also had installed Solaris 10 only(no WinXP)on my un n/w system.Somehow it got corrupted n I have downloaded the CDs.but the are in some other format and I wrote 3 images on one CD and remaining 2 on other. How can I get Installation Cds from those downloaded form?

I am new to Solaris 10 and want to install it on my PC.(Intel81845GVM-RZ
Motherboard,256 mb RAM,80gb Hard disk)IOne of my test machines is Intel 810e based one with 512MB SDRAM and 80 GB UltraATA drive. You need at least 512 MB to run it with OK on x86. But I would strongly recommend you 1 GB RAM, assuming you wish to go for x86 Developer Express.
I am not able to find any good document explaining X86 installations for
solaris which include GRUB bootloader. How should I go about? Will it be
possible for me to install WinXP+Solaris togatherOn that test machine, I run Windows XP - SP2, Sun Solaris x86 Developer Express 03/07, KUbuntu 3.70, PCLinuxOS 2007 final, Sabayon 3.4 Mini, Fedora Core 8 and Open SUSU 10.3 KDE.
Trick is two things, where you won't find in those (poorly maintained) Sun documents!
    a) Know your Hardware: this is a must.
    b) Learn how to put things where: partition expertise
    c) Learn how to control your boot loader: GRUB
It's no magic, everything is possible, provided time and patience :) Best of Luck!
.Sparc is easier and I have done it too.II have done on SPARC and Apple BookPro (new Intel models with Dual Core). I didn't get what you meant by easier?

  • Solaris 8 Installation on Intel - PROBLEM

    Hi,
    I am trying to load Solaris 8 on Intel machine , 810 motherboard , 128MB SDRAM , 20GB HDD
but whenever I try to load with CD-1 I have a problem like Webstart Installation 3.00 start and when he ask me language , after that message comes no hardisk foung and it stop immediately at # prompt.
Whenevr I start with CD-2 , he ask me for Interactive / Jump Start , I choose Interactive , it start laoding KERNAL and machine automatically reboot , again reinstall , at that same point machine reboot.
Tell me what to do , I cant go ahead , I want to load Solaris 8 , and see ..
    HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
    Regards,
    Mahen.

I think the problem source is the BIOS ACPI Power Manager, many of motherboards ACPI always let the system auto-reboot during loaded the OS kernel.
I had tried to install Windows2000 and Solaris8 10/01 on Intel 810 MB, the system always rebooted again and again, I suppose that may be some bugs on 810 chipset !!
Try to reconfigure the BIOS ACPI function, such disable it.
But, I'm not sure that is work for your case.....

  • Solaris 10 installation on x86 problem: reboot

Having downloaded and burned 4 cd iso images I tried to install Solaris 10 on my system. But - on the very beginning it (the installer) reboots my computer and this happens every time I try to install - a few seconds after I see "loading kernel/unix...". My configuration is:

    Hello Deepak,
How much output are you getting to any screen, normally out of the box the build will only attempt configure the first screen attached to the system (laptop screen). The LCD TFT may have to be configured afterwards using files such as xorg.conf.
If you are hoping to achieve dual head then take a look at the following URL to give you an insight it whats happening.
