Solaris 10 installation - questions

Hello,
I'm going to install Solaris 06/06 on my PC. I have some questions about the installation and steps before the installation itself.
First of all, summarize of what I have:
PC checked by device detection tool and all necessary drivers that are not shipped with Solaris
160 GB hard disk - 100GB of NTFS partition with Windows XP, 60GB of "untouched" space - no filesystem, no created partition (is it ok this way? or rather create partition with raw data?)
I've read many discussion boards and web pages related to topic of coexistence of win XP and Solaris on one disk. It seems that XP and Solaris can work on one hard disk without problems.
However, I must admit little fears of possible problems - i.e. threat of corrupting of the access to ntfs partition or the ntfs partition itself. I'll backup all important data, that's without question, however losting of that partition would be very annoying. I have no possibility to make exact disk image.
I've noticed on the forums that grub, a solaris boot loader, sometimes doesn't include win xp partition in its menu. It could be added there, however I've noticed too that some people had big problems with this as they were unable to boot win xp from grup even though they added windows item to grup. This is the thing I fear most - I think that the correct setting during installation cannot corrupt other (in my case Win XP) partition but by installing grub, there is (according the posts on message boards) the chance of possible problems of cutting out Win XP from booting.
Could this be prevented or repaired by the backup of master boot record and in case the problems with booting will occur replace MBR modified by Solaris installation by the backup to back to the state when XP is booting automatically? If so, could you recommend any tool for MBR backup?
Thanks for any comments or advices.

Hello!
First of all,i don`t know any tool that u could use to make a backup of your MBR.
Anyway, dual booting is a problem that i have had in the past. In my opinion, Solaris and Windows will never run without problems (from the Windows point of view). I have tryied many versions of Unix/Linux toghether with Win XP (on the same system);there`s always some kind of problems...sooner or later.
Last week i have installed Solaris 10 toghether with Win XP on a PIII Compaq Deskpro. No problem at the begining. After 1 day, the WIn OS crashed (the PC blocks when i start WinXP).
So, in my opinion, if u want to have a fully functional Solaris system, install it on a separate PC,even if it`s an older one (for example, i have Solaris installed on a PIII/500 MHz/512 RAM bought with 50 euro - depends what u want to do with your Solaris system).
Good luck!
Best regards,
N.

  • Solaris Installation question (from sun course)

Hello, I am just learning about solaris from the course WS-2001-S10. I hope this kind of question is fit for this forum...otherwise please direct me to where I can ask about it.
There is a review question at the end of the installation module like this:
Which Solaris 10 OS installation methods are available to perform a standard upgrade?
         Solaris suninstall and Custom Jumpstart
[x]Solaris suninstall, Solaris Web Start, and Custom Jumpstart
Solaris Web Start and Custom Jumpstart
    Feedback:
         Correct.
The correct answer is 2 but i don't really get it why. In the course they say nothing about Web Start and from what i have read Web Start is just a Web-Based Jump Start installation.
In the course SUN says that "The methods available for a standard upgrade are Solaris GUI installation, the CLI installation, and the custom JumpStart procedure. "
So "suninstall, Solaris Web Start, and Custom Jumpstart" from the answer equals "Solaris GUI installation, the CLI installation, and the custom JumpStart procedure" from course...
Also from what I understood the jumpstart installation is also CLI ...(totally confused now)
Can someone shed some light on this please?

    Installation Guide

    suninstall = CLI
Web Start = GUI (or CLI)
    Custom JumpStart = CLI

  • A small conglomerate of E450/Solaris 10 Questions!

To whom it shall concern or can just help out:
    Solaris 10 Questions
If I wish to run an iSCSI target under Solaris 10, will GA do it or do I need the Express verison of Solaris 10 (for an E450, SPARC)?
If the GA version of Solaris 10 supports iSCSI targets, how capable is it to socialize that with ZFS in combination?
Can Solaris 10 (for SPARC) support any IDE PCI cards on the E450?
Can Solaris 10 (for SPARC) support any USB PCI cards on the E450?
Can Solaris 10 (for SPARC) support any FireWire (1394) PCI cards on the E450?
Other than Solaris Express being more experimental than the GA version, how problematic is it to run Express vice the GA in terms of daily reliability?
Taking a presumptive position that Solaris 10 Express or GA allows for an iSCSI target capability (with or without ZFS inclusive thereto) has anyone attempted to connect to such an alleged Solaris iSCSI target successfully from MacOS using this initiator:

    E450 Questions
What DVD drives are support on the SCSI bus for an E450 to boot from for the purposes of asserting a DVD based Solaris 10 installation?
I am also looking for any of the following hardware (if you have it at a good price, do contact me offline at 310-358-0202, or [email protected]):
    (a) DVD Drives
    (b) Backplane hardware and cables requisite to increase the amount of DASD that can be installed in an E450 from 4 to 12 or 20
    (c) RAM
    (d) Processors
    (e) Multi-port Ethernet cards
    Thanks in advance!
    Stuart

I have been running solaris 10 on an e450 for ages
and it works fine. I slid the drive out of a
    Blade1000 to load the DVD.
Which version (specifically) of Solaris 10 are you running?
    GA?
    Express?
    Which month/year release?
    Regarding the DVD:
An interesting solution, though I do not have a Blade1000 handy, so I will continue to look for a compatible DVD player I can use within the e450 for an inexpensive price, unless you are suggesting that a Blade1000 with a DVD is cheaper than a DVD for the e450. Are you suggesting such?
HCL lists are available for the e450.Perhaps you can suggest where I might find them sir?
That truly would be helpful, as I had presumed already that such lists were existent.
    >
The backplane can be bought cheap to expand the drive
number.Still investigating the part number, but yes, I'd imagine so. Do you perhaps know the part numer for this item sir?
    >
Not sure about any of the iscsi stuff.Too bad, that was an important part of the information I was looking for.
    >
Ebay ebay ebay for e450 gear. Once I know the part numbers, ebay will be a great tool for finding the hardware, I agree.
    >
On another note, the e450 is a beast weighting in
around 300 pounds fully loaded. Sucks up more power
than NY city on a hot day and can heat a fairly large
building. Not to mention they sound like small
    airplanes.
I live in Vegas, electricity is burned out here in outrageous amounts on a daily basis.
Indeed, I am presuming that when they (I have two) are running during the winter, that I will be able to heat my 1895 sq foot house (or at least one deck of it).
I know they are one of the most interesting computer
designs out there but unless you a glutten for slow
processors max 480 mhz I would suggest you buy
something a bit newer. One ultra45 would be better
and hold more drive space and ram.
Years in the computer industry and I will never understand why, when people ask technical questions others feel they are helping to say "replace your hardware", when indeed it is not broken and they are attempting to use it. I have to admit, you are not the first to do such a thing.
I understand you think there is something better, and honestly, I certainly am not inept enough to have not considered that, yet still I posted the query in the instant post asking about the e450.
Consider this: perhaps I was interested in using the e450 and getting the questions answered...nah...why would I want to do that?
If you do like the old hardware and redundancy is not
critical I would suggest getting a blade2000 off of
ebay for around 600 dollars. Still big and beautiful
but far far faster. I use a Blade1000 (wont die) and
have firewire drives plugged into it for more space. And what suggestion would you proffer if the $600 budget is not there?
    Using the e450 perhaps? :)

  • Minimum Solaris installation for Directory Server

    Hello,
i want to set up a new Solaris installation for Sun ONE directory server.
But i don't want to install always the "entire distribution" and then turn off all services. I want to keep the solaris os installation as small as possible. Has anybody tried this before and can report some experiences? Is the "reduced network" cluster the right way to go or better the "core" cluster? Does anybody have a list of the packages which must be installed after a minimal solaris installation for the ds to work?
    Thanks a lot,
    af_inet

Since you original question is "minimum requirement
at the SERVER", I would say that X is not really
needed at the server end if you use installer text
mode CLI (command is "./installer -nodisplay")
instead of installer graphical mode (GUI). However,
to fix uninstall/reinstall issue, X is needed as the
"prodreg" which is used to uninstall packages is a X
program, without text mode option. This is correct.
It is not a must to run ./startconsole (X program)
LOCALLY so as to perform DS admin functions as you
could always run SUN ONE Console REMOTELY from any
remote host (Windows or UNIX/Linux) with just the
console binaries installed. (for large data centre
env. the LDAP server is usually locked in server room
away from your desk and you tend to use remote admin
console). This is correct too. I think it's a matter of taste if i want to install console on the DS itself or on a separate host. As long as i have only one DS i will leave it on the machine itself. But you are right, this is not a must. So i should have asked my question more precicely :-)
    Thank you very much,
    Chris

  • No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation

Hi all, I have a problem when trying to install Solaris 8 (Intel) on my PC. There are some funny things happened while installing the OS.
1.) My motherboard does not support booting from CD-ROM, so I downloaded a Device Assistant Boot Disk to boot it up. Then I use dd.exe to make the boot disk from the image, I have tried many times that after creating the boot disk, this boot disk will contain 512 bytes of bad sector. So why?
2.) After using this boot disk to boot up and install the OS, before entering to the detection of the bus type stuff (still on the white screen), at the bottom of the screen, it says "ata_command select failed ... ...", what does this mean?
3.) When the system go back to the white screen with language selection, I choose English (which is 1), and the system try to find my hard disk, but it failed and says "No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation" with a new line saying "installation documenation found.". So what is happening?
    Appreciate for any help.

Please help me. I new to UNIX and SOLARIS.Thanks!

You are probably using the INSTALL CD that comes with Solaris x86.
Don't use it but use the Software CD 1/1 to boot and install the system instead. The INSTALL CD is supposed to be used on a completely blank system (no other OS's) although even there I think Software CD 1/1 does the job.
Also, if you are new to Solaris I advice you to get the FAQ (you can find it on e.g. http://www.science.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2- it should be really helpfull during the first few weeks/months on Solaris

  • Is Perl part of default Solaris Installation ?

I am devloping an application which invokes a few perl scripts during installation. I just want to know:
Is Perl part of default/standard Solaris Installation ?
How safe is it to assume existence of Perl on client-side Solaris System?

Perl has been in Solaris in /usr/bin since Solaris 8. I am not completely certain, but I believe it is included in all metaclusters including the minimal Core cluster.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 Installation Question

How can I tell if my software installed properly? The software came with three discs, and it only installed the first disc. I am new to Photoshop, and do not know if my software installed properly? Can anyone help?

    Gautham K,
    Thank you for your quick replies. I have checked,and my OS is indeed 64 bit. I have been using the 32 bit version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, since I installed it last evening. I have a few quick questions;
Will I loose any functionality if I stay with the 32 bit version versus un-installing and installing the 64 bit version from disc 2?
If I decide to un-install, and re-install from disc 2, will there be any software registration issues (as I have already registered the software)?
Thanks again for all of your help.

  • Installation Questions Documaker 12.3 Enterprise Edition

We are looking to install Documaker 12.3 Enterprise Edition and have the following installation questions:
When installing Documaker can we have our own VM in our own OU for the WAS application servers? This will make maintenance easier on our side.  There doesn’t seem to be anything in the documentation saying this is a good or a bad idea.
Our WAS Admins would like to know what the scripts in the Post-Setup documentation actually do.  Is it possible to use our existing scripting environment to build the necessary pieces instead of using scripts from the documaker install?  If it’s not possible, can we get a look at the documaker scripts before we run them?
We would like to know if WAS 8.5 is supported, or if version 7.0.0.27 in the requirements pdf is the only version supported?

When installing Documaker can we have our own VM in our own OU for the WAS application servers? This will make maintenance easier on our side.  There doesn’t seem to be anything in the documentation saying this is a good or a bad idea.
The typical installation scenario is to have 3 tiers - application (WAS), application (Documaker), and data. WAS tiers host web applications (Dashboard, Administrator, Interactive) as well as providing database connection pools and JMS queues for messaging - it is expected that the WAS environment is a clustered environment and that the applications are deployed to the cluster members, which can be physical or virtual. For the Documaker application server, these can be physical or virtual as well. It's recommended to install Documaker on single-purposes environments, however there's nothing to prevent you from doing otherwise. The Documaker applications are self-contained JVMs and can be tuned accordingly.

The installation process (currently) writes the scripts according to responses provided during the installation process. The scripts can be reviewed/modified prior to execution.
We would like to know if WAS 8.5 is supported, or if version 7.0.0.27 in the requirements pdf is the only version supported?
The official supported version of WAS is 7.0.0.27, however WAS 8.5 may be suitable (I believe there might be a fix pack requirement there - would recommend you submit a question to Oracle Support for verification).
