I am Windows, RedHat, and Alpha user but not the SUN.
Really really brand new userFor the SUN. I want to start to use Java.
I am installing the Solaris10 to my USED Sunfire 280R.
I am downloading the Solaris 10 from the SUN web site and buning the DVD. When I boot my system, it is not boot from the DVD, then it is stop at
Fire280r console login :
then I don't know how to do it.
Anyone know how to log in? or Sun has a default password and user name?
Help me please.
THanks in advance.
Kevin

I did the STOP and type boot dvdrom, then reboot the system.
But it can not install and stop in prompt.
boot: can not open dvdrom
if I type .install
boot: can not open .install
what should i do for that?
Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I just wanted to point you to the Sun System Handbook page for the F280R, but to my surprise the note is lacking from the current <b>public/free</b> version !!!

The Blade 1000 and the Sun Fire 280R use the same systemboard, but a Enterprise 280R doesn't exist.
Either get Solaris 8 7/01 or Solaris 8 10/01 (for 900Mhz Cu) or a more current version of Solaris 8.

So the hardware sees the library but the os dos not compute&hellip; any idea how to get the drivers working and something under /dev/rmt?

You could experiment with giving OBP the absolute path to that USB device, but I doubt you'll be successful. The Sunfire 280R (same hardware as the Sunblade 1000, Sunblade 2000, and Netra 20) design expected USB to be only for keyboard and mouse, not for any storage devices. If booting ever works manually from a USB stick, then you could create a custom alias for the device.
Try an experiment by using a CD or DVD of an older release of Solaris 10 instead of the current release.
The earlier ones need fewer hardware resources. I also recall a few forum posts that seem to suggest the bootblock structure on the CD's and DVD's of those earlier releases was more compatible with older hardware.
You might also need to get yourself a copy of the OBP 4.x Command Reference Manual, document No. 816-1177

    Resolution:     Top
Normally, this is the recommended action. But if the patch
that fails to install is 114877-xx or 114878-xx, then a
    rollback may not be necessary.
Both 114877-xx (Solaris 8) and 114878-xx (Solaris 9) patches the following
packages: SUNWjfca, SUNWjfcax, SUNWjfcau, and SUNWjfcaux.
The packages and patches are drivers for the JNI 2GB PCI Single FC Network
Adapter and JNI 2GB PCI Dual FC Network Adapter fibre-channel that have
Sun StorEdge SAN 4.x Foundation Suite compatible FCODE.
If server does not have this type of host bus adapter, then SUNWjfca,
SUNWjfcax, SUNWjfcau, and SUNWjfcaux packages are not installed on
the system. The patch will fail to install causing install_it script
    to prompt for a rollback.
For this specific situation, it is okay to respond no to the rollback
and let install_it script proceed to completion as the patch is not
    required.
Would you like to rollback your changes ? [y,n,?] n

  • Solaris 8 Installation on Intel - PROBLEM

    Hi,
    I am trying to load Solaris 8 on Intel machine , 810 motherboard , 128MB SDRAM , 20GB HDD
but whenever I try to load with CD-1 I have a problem like Webstart Installation 3.00 start and when he ask me language , after that message comes no hardisk foung and it stop immediately at # prompt.
Whenevr I start with CD-2 , he ask me for Interactive / Jump Start , I choose Interactive , it start laoding KERNAL and machine automatically reboot , again reinstall , at that same point machine reboot.
Tell me what to do , I cant go ahead , I want to load Solaris 8 , and see ..
    HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
    Regards,
    Mahen.

I think the problem source is the BIOS ACPI Power Manager, many of motherboards ACPI always let the system auto-reboot during loaded the OS kernel.
I had tried to install Windows2000 and Solaris8 10/01 on Intel 810 MB, the system always rebooted again and again, I suppose that may be some bugs on 810 chipset !!
Try to reconfigure the BIOS ACPI function, such disable it.
But, I'm not sure that is work for your case.....

  • Solaris 8 installation problem on an Intel base PC

I'm quite new with Solaris. I got stuck in Solaris 8 installation just at almost the very beginning. After booting up the system from floppy and conituing pressing F2 and selecting booting from CD, I got an error message like:
    cannot mount on pci@0; 0/pci-ide@7; 1/ide01/sd@0; 0:a
    panic[cpu0]thread=FEC17440 vfs:mountroot
then, the system reboots itself again and again every time it reaches this point. I guess it's a problem with my CD-ROM. But the problem persists even if I change CD-ROM or move CD-ROM from secondary master to primary slave, etc. I also tried to change harddisk, but did no good to the problem. Is there any experienced users who could provide me with some solutions?
I'm using a system with: Pentium 133, 32 MB Ram, 4GB HDD, 3C905TX, ATI Rage II PCI, Matshita CR-587 CD-ROM, Serial mouse and so on. I also tried another system with: P III 450, Asus P3BF, 192MB Ram, Pioneer DVD-ROM, same HDD, and so on. The problem was still there with the latter system. However, I successfully installed Solaris 7 with the latter system before. Why can't it work with Solaris 8?
Thanks a lot for the help.

I've been having the exact same problems on a PowerEdge 500SC. I have managed to get Solaris up and running on the machine, however. I booted the DCA from the floppy disk and installed from the CD-ROM. When the DCA is ready to scan for devices I use the "Specific Scan" option to tell it to look for specific devices. I tell it to scan for all devices in the listing and in doing so the DCA finds ISA-based IDE controllers. After it provides a listing of the devices it found I use the "Device Tasks" option and the "View/Edit Devices" menu item then delete the Bus Mastering IDE controller device. Once the screen comes up to ask for a boot device, the drives will show up as on the ISA controllers.
I have to go through this process every time I boot the machine but I am able to make the system run at least.
I haven't figured out the ACPI problem, yet.

    Doug

  • SunFire 280R 33/66 or 66?

I have found the following information on the SunFire 280R stating the PCI solot one is 33/66:
    PCI Slot 1     /pci&#64;8,600000/pci&#64;1,* 33/66mhz-32/64bit-3.3V from ( Solaris&#91;TM&#93;: Matrix of Recognized Device Paths, http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/Example/documen ts/21216.html )
However,Chapter 2 fot the "Servicing the Main Logic Board and Components" document ( http://docs.sun.com/source/806-4807-10/board5.htm#1976610 ) states the following ( 66 only )... Note - PCI slot 1 is reserved for high-speed (66-MHz) cards. Installing a low-speed (33-MHz) card into PCI slot 1 will affect FC-AL performance. Do not install a low-speed card into PCI slot 1.
So which is it? 33/66 or just 66 Mhz?

Fibre Channel disk controller. FC-AL is Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop, a networking technology that supports IP or SCSI at Gigabit or higher speeds.
    http://www.t11.org/index.htm
So basically the 280R, V480/490 and V880/890 systems have a disk controller that uses FC-AL to transport SCSI protocol to the disks. FC-AL is a type of loop network, dare I say, similar in theory to token ring networking technology. Fibre Channel is an enterprise class technology mainly used to build storage area networks. SANs offer a more scalable solution for storage compared to the limitations of direct attached SCSI storage. Higher throughput can be obtained as well, currently Sun offers 400MB/s on a single channel HBA. The highest throughput possible with the 280R is 100MB/s to 200MB/s. I have never tried to configure the 280R onboard controller to 200MB/s ( not sure if it is even possible, perhaps using the HSSDC interface attached to a switch?? ), but with a X6799A installed in PCI slot 1, 200MB/s is possible.

  • Not able to add driver update during Solaris 10 installation on IBM x3550

I am facing a problem with installation of Solaris 10 on IBM x3550.
My question is not specific to IBM server.
I am trying to add SAS driver during Solaris 10 installation. I selected option "Apply device driver update" (option # 4). It is asking to insert driver disk. But only showing floppy (f) and cdrom (c).
IBM server 3550 doesnt have floppy drive and I have the driver image only in a USB stick. Unfortunately, Solaris 10 installation is not showing usb device during driver installation.
Is there any way we can add usb device to the driver update disk list??
    Thanks in advance.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

AFAIK, this is a warning and can be ignored. But on dell
