Solaris 10, Java Desktop, Mozilla, JSP
It seems that the version of mozilla provided by Solaris 10 (SPARC) and the Java Desktop does not display jsp pages. (seems ironic)
Has anyone discovered the work around for this? I have tried linking the plugin from the j2se v5 that came with the install to my .mozillia/pluging directory, even copied it there, but still no luck. Also tried installeding JRE, and newer J2SE. Still when I try to access http://site.name/file.jsp mozilla does not know what to do with this "binary file" and wants to download it.
Thanks!
I've just run into the poblem as well. Google is not helping me get any answers. I think it's strictly a file extension problem as Tomcat should be outputting actual HTML. Also curious is that Solaris 10 x86 doesn't show the same problem but SPARC does.

Don't do that.
You'll forget where the responses might be.
You might get a partial answer in one post,

Can't launch Java Desktop in Solaris 10 X86
I've installed Solaris 10 for x86 with Jumpstart but I can't log on using Java Desktop--any Ideas?
PS, how do you set the screen resolution in CDE?
Thanks,
DaveHello,
You can use kdmconfig.
Let me know if it solved your issue. I have the same problem with solaris 10 b72... JDS cannot be loaded, and I come back to the login screen. But no problem with CDE. -
Java Desktop on Solaris 10 is running too slow
Hi.
This is my first post :-) I work on quite fast sun server with solaris 10. I connect to the server with XWin tool from cygwin. CDE works perfect, but i have problems with Java Desktop. When i open a window - for example terminal - the command prompt works fine i can write commands and answers are fast, but when i try to move the window with the mouse, desktop hangs up for about 30 seconds, sometimes longer. And when i use logout from menu it takes more than 3 minutes to logout the user. Maby someone knows a couse for this problem, or any solution.
Thanks. How much memory do you have in your machine? JDS requires more RAM than CDE. If you're close to the edge, it's going to page out applications, and that will make it take longer when you switch to them.
You may want to add memory or just use a lighter-weight window manager.

Solaris Managment console in Java desktop release 3
Hi Experts,
I have recently installed Solaris 10/8 on a x86 based system. When I try to login to the server through CDE it gives a message "CDE has been deprecated and will be removed in future release of Solaris. Please move to the Java Desktop System (aka JDS)"
If I login using JDS I am unable to see Solaris Managment console. Is there any new console that is been used in the JDS or we have to do the managment manually?
Revert back if you have any questions.
Regards,
Sunil. How I've always done it is open up a shell and just type SMC that always seems to work for me, even in the days when I was using cde I would do the same.
I guess, that for me, an X session was just a way to have a lot of terminal windows open, but that's just me :)

I've installed Solaris 10 u2 x86 and after having fought with setting up X for a month. I've now managed to get X to start on my 1920x1200 Dell monitor.
The problem is when I chose Java Desktop System, Release 3 as the session I just get kicked back to the login display.
Can someone tell me where I am supposed to look to see what's wrong?
I can login using CDE, but who want's to use that when JDS is around!
MartinSince I stumbled onto the solution I'm sharing it here.
I logged into CDE and tried to get a web browser going, but nothing happened when clicked on the web browser icon.
Then I tried running mozilla from a terminal, but it complained about missing library libmlib.so.2. A quick search on google brought me back to these forums and a post saying "Missing libmlib.so.2 - GDM won't start".
I put the solaris 10 dvd into the cdrom and added the SUNWmlib package.
Now JDS is working -
Can you assign a customized menu in Java Desktop
I have a large number of users and I'm trying to customize a menu system when you click on "Launch". I need to create a menu that is unique for different users, so say group A can have one menu system and group B can have a different menu.
I've found info on adding items to a menu for all users, and for specific users one at a time if you log in as their user. In file browser, (applications-all-users:/// for all users, and just applications://// for an individual). But I have too many users which makes one at a time not feasible.
Is there any way to customize a menu setup, then assign that menu to groups instead of users? I'm running Solaris 10 with Java Desktop 3.
Thanks for the help.Sounds like you might want to investigate the JDS Configuration Manager, it was designed to allow different desktop configurations for different groups of users. http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/1221.1?l=en&q=java+desktop+system+configuration+manager

Black Screen with cursor. Java Desktop System.
Hello everyone.
I've installed Solaris 10 05/08 x86 32bit in VMWare Workstation 6.5.
After I logged in in the system (Java Desktop System, Release 3), I've got only a black screen with cursor, nothing more.
X server: Xsun server configuration:
Video Device: VMWare Inc vmware0405
Video Driver: XF86 VMWARE
Resolution/Colors: 800x600 65536 colors @75Hz
Screen size: 17 inch
Monitor type: MultiFrequency 56Hz (up to 1280x1024 interlaced)
But the CDE starts normally.
What's the problem?
Help, please.
P.S. Computer with VMWARE Workstation: Asus P4P800SE, P4HT 3.0Gz, 2.0Gb Ram, Ati AIW X800 AGP 256Mb..

Where I can find and use "Java Desktop System Management Tools "
With Solaris 10, you not only get the Java Desktop System desktop environment, but also the Java Desktop System Management Tools and a selection of free and trial Development Tools, which are available for download only.
I found only an information about JDS release 2
but today it's release 3 already and it's said it already integrated in JDS
and above sentence it state that it already come with solaris 10?
where i can find that , where i can use it
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-7575/6mmsrpduj?a=view
this page said how to install but ...where I can find CD/
regards please helpGood question. It appears to have been installed with Solaris 11/06, as I have all of the packages listed here:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-7575/6mmsrpdus?a=view
However, it does not appear in the Java Web Console. I tried adding it using the wcadmin command, but haven't managed to get it to run as per the docs. The documentation assumes that it is already installed and visible in the Java Web Console...
According to this documentation:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-1985/6mhm8o5l6?a=view#gdjpi
An application for the Java Web Console should have a WEB-INF directory and an app.xml file. The apoc packages come with neither, so something is missing. -
Calling a soap web service from a java desktop application
Hi,
Does anyone know how to call a soap web service from a java desktop application? I've seen examples using Apache Axis, but it sounds like Axis needs to run on a web server and we are trying to avoid that. My initial thought was that, "of course we need a web server", but I'm wondering if there is a way to do this without a web server.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
thank you,
JulieIf you are the consumer you don't need any web server. The web server is only needed in the provider end.
In java 6 there is a built in framework to call web services without the need of third parties (such as apache axis)
take a look at:
https://jax-ws.dev.java.net/guide/Developing_client_application_with_locally_packaged_WSDL.html
http://java.sun.com/webservices/technologies/index.jsp
For the provider end there is also a built in http server to expose web service via HTTP without the need to
use any external web server.
take a look at:
http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/javax/xml/ws/Endpoint.html -
Issue: non-root access to Java Desktop System
Hello,
Rookie here. i have been using Solaris 10 with no problem and accessing the GUI thru the Java Desktop system with no problem. i created a new non-root user 'user1' on the system with all default parameters assigned to the user when doing 'useradd user1'. these default parameters assume a default home directory is assigned to the user, correct? i am able to access the system with 'user1' via console and remote, but i cannot access the GUI thru the Java Desktop system with this user. It accepts my credentials then it flashes a couple of times and sends me back to the welcome log-in screen.
Are there additional permission that i need to grant this user to access GUI via JDS? i'm able to do everything else as normal. Any help is appreciated.doing 'useradd user1'. these default parameters assume a default home directory is assigned to the user, correct? i am Incorrect. man useradd paying attention to -d and -m. Solaris defaults to /export/home and will usually throw an error if you try to use /home as it's controlled by the automounter.
If it's just a test user account then userdel followed by useradd again.

Java Desktop System Login to Zone?
Hi all.
I have installed Solaris 10 (Kernel version: SunOS 5.10 Generic_137138-09) for i386. I have created a single non-global zone which runs happily and that non-global zone can be accessed with SSH remotely and locally by root. Zlogin also works for my zone. Additionally, the zone seems to be running an X server because if i "ssh -X myzone" I can run graphical applications in my zone (like xclock) from the Java Desktop System in my global zone.
Now, what I would like to do, if possible, is to login with the full Java Desktop System to my non-global zone. When presented with the graphical login screen on the console I choose "Options" then "Remote Login" then "Choose Host From List", I see my non-global zone on the list. So I then highlight my non-global zone and click "OK". I am returned to the login screen. But it still says "Welcome to <my global zone>", and when I logon I am still in the global zone. I also tried typing in the non-global zone name in Options -> Remote Login -> Enter Host Name, but still no luck.
So, what might I need to do to login with the Java Desktop System to my non-global zone?
Thanks in advance!!
JohnIs there any particular reason why you did the minimum install? I perform an "Entire Distribution without OEM SUpport" installation, and select everything except the Documentation (since there is no documentation CD - go figure) and the Java Enterprise System (since I do not need to run those servers). I do install the Companion CD which contains a lot of the software.
When the installation is finished, the Java Desktop System is up and running, after tweaking XFree86, of course.
Unless you are **REALLY** hurting for disk space, you might as well install the entire distribution. They claim that you need 9 GB or so, but in reality I've been able to install it on a 4 GB hard drive.
As to where exactly it's located, I'm not sure because it's always been installed for me. If you can, reinstall with an Entire Distribution and the additional software selections that I mentioned. You'll have JDS. -
Solaris 10, java, local zone and priority
Hi,
I have asked this on the Solaris 10/Zone forum 4 days ago but didn't
get any response. Maybe I get better luck here?
I have a jboss container running like a dog. It's running on a niceness
of 10 (by default - why?); renice fails with
$ renice -n 0 1635
renice: 1635:setpriority: Not owner
How do I fix that, and how can I get jboss to run with a niceness of
0 or 1 at startup?
I did manage to up the niceness manually from the global zone, but that's
not really an option once the system goes production. How/where do
I set java tasks to run with a sensible priority by default?
It appears that anything java (even within the global zone) runs on a
niceness of 20 (10 is what we see inside a local zone, the global will
report 20 in prstat).
CheersI removed this file,/usr/lib/libmlib/libmlib_sse.so.2, but I can't still use java desktop...
is there any other solution? -
Login to Java Desktop fails after IP address change
If the IP address (or networking type DHCP vs. static address) changes, users can no longer log in to their accounts and use the Java Desktop environment. I can get around this by using the Solaris Management Console from CDE to remove the user(s) without removing their respective home directories, then recreating the users with the respective home dirs. This, however, seems to be an extreme hack to me. Is there a better way? Thanks.
Hi Glenn,
The issue could be caused by unfinished AD replication. It may be intermittent and resolve itself automatically.

for some reason I can only get into CDE on my Solaris 10 x86 last update.
when I log into the JAva Desktop.. it just hangs without any error msg of any kind.
What I've done that might be due to:
1. trying to set up IPFilter (think it should be working OK now)
2.to change my hostname from the unknown
3. via smc (Solaris Management Console) played with assigning users rights/groups , as I hated it too much when I need to install something to log as root then finding out I have to re-install it for the regular user from his account... like the StarOffice-I've installed it as root, but as a regular used it still wants me to install it..
So what I've done - it seems that I have the same desktop in JD when I log in with a reg. user.. but now it JD does not start..
Oh,I've edited also /etc/passwd for the shells assigned /bin/bash and addded Super-User to my regular user..
At last I'm not 100% sure that no.3 is the problem as I'm not 100% whether I did restart after doing number 3. Basically I'm not sure if I did the reboot prior to no.1,2 or after I 've done all the 3 things....
So how can I get the JD working again?
Any Ideas?
Many Thanks in Advence!Ok, I don't know which logs to look at.. tried in /var/log.. everythings seems to be OK,no errors , just one warnning which I'm 101% is irrelevant- in xorgl log about something keyboard related.
Now I've tried to log in again into JD and hit Alt+Ctrl+Del to see :
stdprocess
no such file.......
I've tried to start this from console-voila it's a process manager/monitor.. it works..
Any ideas what is messed up?
Anyone?
Many Thanks!
