Solaris 10 Jumpstart error: panic - boot: boot: scratch memory overflow.

I am setting up a Solaris Jumpstart server using a Linux server as the Boot/Config/Install server. The Sun box I am using is a v120 that will be running Solaris 10 update 5.
After running the "boot net - install" command and running through the setup the install terminates with the error
boot: failed to allocate 8192 bytes from scratch memory
panic - boot: boot: scratch memory overflow.
Program terminated
ok
ok
I found a patch (111306-07) that supposedly fixes this problem (logged as bug 4411148). Is there a specific way to add a patch to Jumpstart so that it installs before the system reboots after the main install is done? I know the patches folder goes off of the added on date for the patch and not a patch_order file, does that mean it can just be placed in the folder and will be added automatically? Has anyone seen this error message before on their own systems?
Thanks in advance for any help.

You may also need to install the patch onto the installed OS, but that's less certain.
For the first part, find your jumpstart image and pass that into patchadd with the -C flag to patch the jumpstart portion.

  • Network Booting Solaris 10 on Netra T4 - scratch memory overflow error

    Hi,
I recently got a hold of a Netra T4 server, and am now trying to install Solaris 10 on it. Since the server can DVD-driveless, I had to resort to booting it over the network from a boot server. I have progressed through a series of errors, from not configuring the NFS correctly, to making sure the RARP was on as well.
The current issue that I am having is when i start the boot (boot net -v install), it begins to load the image, and then haults when it reaches:
Rebooting with command: boot net -v install

I'm not exactly sure why this is occuring, or what I can do to resolve this. Has anyone else come across this scenario? Judging from google searches, I haven't found anything that can help me fix this. Hopefully someone can.
    Thanks a ton,

as well, I have tried using various directories to install from, all coming to the same result.

that path was one of the specific paths that I used to manipulate the boot. I resulted to trying this because it was unable to load from kernel/sparcv9/unix. This thing is, that path is available on the media that I am using, so I have no idea why is it saying it can't find it.
    The path that you see:
    <pub/install/Solaris_10/Tools/Boot/platform/SUNW,Netra-T4/kernel/drv/sparcv9/lombus>
was one of the paths that I tried using to get it to install from, because it said it couldn't find the default path. The path you see just happened to be the one that was on the screen when I copied it to show the error message in this thread.
As you can see, I'm a little stuck. As it stands...I don't know many things about installing on sparc servers.
With that said, any help would do. At the moment, I am downloading the Solaris 9 media, and then I will try to get at Solaris 10 by upgrading the software. If this fails, I will just buy a DVD drive.
    Can anyone still help me?

  • Kernel Panic/Trap error, can't boot up?

I was installing the 10.6.8 update combo, and it completed and I restarted.  About 10 minutes later, a gray screen came up and a box that said "You need to restart your computer.  Hold down..."  with the four other languages.
I tried to restart, but instead of bringing me to the log-in screen, a gray screen came up with the error "panic(cpu 0 caller 0x2abf6a): Kernel trap at 0x0029a4b6, type 14=page fault, registers:"  and then it goes on to list a bunch of things that I'd rather not type, but will if necessary.
I tried restarting by way of the power button a few times with no luck.  I then tried holding option+command+p+r until I heard the start up chimes three times, but that didn't make it work either.  It did, however, make it so that every attempt at booting was much slower.  It now stays on the gray screen for at least 5 minutes before the little Apple logo appears and it begins to load.  I also held down shift while booting, and put in my osx disk and held down D.  Nothing has brought me to even a different screen.
What else can I try?  I'm leaving for college in less than two weeks, and it's essential that I get this repaired as fast as possible.
This is a 13 inch aluminum unibody MacBook running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  It has 4 gb of RAM and a 500 gb hard drive.  It runs an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (2 ghz).  And has an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card.  This is from memory so I'm hoping it's right.
    Any advice?

    Hi Frank
Reset the SMC exactly as described in the article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
It could be that the cord or surge protector was damaged, try using a different power cord and a different surge protector.

  • Solaris 10 Update 10 (8/11) panics on boot under virtualbox and vmware

I am trying to install S10 U10 in a VM and have downloaded the DVD ISO image. I verified the MD5 checksum then tried to boot the installation from the DVD image but it panics on boot under both Virtualbox (latest version) and VMware workstation (latest version). How can I get this working?
    Thanks
    Andrew.

I had no problems installing Solaris 10 U9 x86 from an ISO download. The ISO download of Solaris 10 U10 x86 I got recently is another matter. When I try to install U10 with VMware Player or Virtualbox on a Dell PC with Windows 7 the install process hangs. I can't tell if this behavior is a panic or not, but it is a problem. On both VMware Player and Virtualbox the install process gets to the following screen and never does anything else:
    SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_147441-01 64-bit

    Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Getting an error 'Cannot open Boot device' while trying to install Solaris

    Hi,
We were trying to install Solaris * on a Sun Sparc system and the CD rom drive does not seem to get recognised. When we try booting from cd rom we get an error 'Cannot open boot device' .
This server was up & running and we were trying to remove a hard disk that had failed and modified the vfstab script . After that the system failed to even boot up. So when we tried reinstalling the OS we are running into this problem.
Am new to this technology ...And any help would be greatly appreciated. .....
    Thanks

Cdrom drive must be scsi device 6
I assume you are running < boot cdrom> at the ok prompt
also at the ok prompt run the command <probe-scsi> (without the angled brackets) you need to see the following:
    Target 6
Unit 0 Removable read only device TOSHIBA XM.......bigpileofnumbers
If not, check the cdrom drive and the cdrom inside
    hope this helps

  • Random kernel panic at boot

    Hello guys,
I recently installed Arch to my GF's laptop because she wanted to learn some stuff about how to use it, how it works etc... Unfortunately, there are some (seems like) random kernel panics at boot, I haven't found if it's related to some event or not because I've been trying to reboot it 10x in a row or after a whole day of usage etc. to find out if it's caused by some action but it still seems to be random during the boot. Inspecting the stack trace confused me even more because it doesn't look same with each panic. I captured 3 of them for example (sorry, haven't found a way to get them in text format since they are not stored on disk :-/ ):

Reinstalling the system didn't helped (tried it like 3x), current system is fresh fully updated arch that I installed 2 days ago, There's only basic system with KDE, opensource ati drivers, cpufreq and blacklisted modules (pcspkr, bluetooth, toshiba_bluetooth), I made no other modifications (hopefully) which may affect the system boot.
    Here is the system info:

  • OSX Won't Install / Kernel Panic at Boot Up

I have been having a few issues for the best part of a year now, firstly not being able to update to 10.6.8 meaning not being able to update to Lion. My onboard sound is non existemnt and have to run audio through HDMI.
To cut a long story short I was running the OS that came with the machine when I bought it and could not update at all as this would cause a kernel panic at boot up each and everytime meaning I had to reinstall the OS from the boot disk.
Last time this happened my internal HDD seemed to fail, tried everything to repair through disc utilities etc and ended up formatting and attempting a reinstall, I now receive this error log when I attempt installation, can anyone give me any ideas as to what is going on with it.
Its a late 2009 model 8GB Ram 320GB HDD and dual core 1.66 processor as far as I am aware (unfortunately cannot get the specific system info as I cannot boot or reinstall OSX.

Whew, seems we have either a bad Hard Drive, bad RAM, or bad Logic Board.
Have you run Apple Hardware Test from the original Install Disc?
Hold d key or alt key at bootup to choose AHT, if it has 2 Install DVDs, AHT may be on the second one, run the extended tests.

  • Solaris 3/05 no longer boots after installing 113000-07

I can't get Solaris 10 3/05 to boot anymore after installing patch 113000-7. The patch was installed by Sun's update connection software.
The computer is a Dell Dimension XPS T600 with 512MB ram.
    I get the error:
Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory.

I'm not sure how to edit my replies so I'm just gonna make another reply. I assumed the following values:
    GPT 3 Start
    GPT 3 End
    GPT 3 Size
    NTFS Start
    NTFS Offset
    NTFS End
    NTFS Size
    293378384
    293380320
    1936
    294649856
    1936
    490233855
    195584000
I followed the rest of the instructions given here. I made sure to enter the second number with a + sign. After doing all of that all these checks worked:
Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?
Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?
Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?
I've always been able to access my bootcamp files from finder and I can try to boot from System Preferences -> startup disk, from rEFIt and also from my macbooks startup manager that I access by holding down option while booting.
I'm starting to think I've misrepresented my problem and that I've been looking at the wrong threads. Every time I try to boot windows I get a black screen with the Windows logo and some text saying something like "starting automatic recovery" or something like that. It then takes me to a blue screen displaying an error number and telling me to use recovery tools on the installation media. Maybe this is different from the problems I've been looking at in other threads.
I've tried using the same USB I used to install bootcamp with but it doesn't give me the option of repairing the installation.
EDIT: So I figured out how to edit replies. Anyway I just tried to boot into Windows and checked. The black screen with the Windows logo says "Preparing Automatic Repair". The blue screen gives me the error 0xc00000e.

  • Error messages when booting up

Receive 3 error messages when booting up PS using Win 8. "Could not load the FastCore Routines Module, could not load the MMX Core, could not load the Multiprocess Support Module." Any explanation?

Ah-ha! Seems there are two Adobe program folders, one under Program Files and one under Program Files (x86). I did not know about the one under Program Files.
    According to System Info:
    Required Plug-ins folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC (64 Bit)\Required\Plug-Ins\
    Primary Plug-ins folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC (64 Bit)\Plug-ins\
Creative Cloud app keeps wanting to update Photoshop CC but keeps failing. The error code is U44M1P7.
Following is all of the System Info, showing the third-party plug-ins that I installed a few hours ago from onOne and Topaz. I can't see anything odd in this, and System Info says all the plug-ins loaded.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Solaris 10 and Linux dual boot

I currently have Linux installed and would like to install Solaris 10 on the same system via a different H-drive. I would like to have both OS fully functional.
I have loaded Solaris 10 CD1 but unable boot into solaris to complete installation.
I have edited linux /boot/grub/menu, syntax outlined below.
title solaris in hdc1 known to grub as (hd1,0)
    root (hd1,0)

Still unable to boot up solaris getting error: 21
    Here's my hardware configuration
    Primary Mstr: 1 ide H-drive - Linux
    Primary slave: n/a
    Secondary mstr: 1 ide H-drive - Solaris 10
    Slave: DVD
    Thanks to all in advance!

OK, folks, I have solved it and here are my last words on the subject.
First of all, my verdict is to use the Solaris GRUB to boot all the other OS's, just because the Linux GRUB "cannot mount the partition", where Solaris kernel is. The Solaris GRUB can do it all.
I can absolutely boot my Linux (hd1,0) partition from my SXDE GRUB installation on (hd0),
for that I use the following section in */boot/grub/menu.lst*:
    title SuSE-10.3-GM
    root (hd1,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sdb1 vga=0x31a splash=silent ht=on showopts
    initrd /boot/initrd
    map (hd0) (hd1)
Yes, "*map ...*" string is important, for GRUB starts the counting from the drive it is installed in. It seems, the author of the original post is missing this string in his bootloader configuration; his Linux is on (hd0) and Solaris on (hd1), so he needs to use the "map" string.
I must also add to this, that when I booted last time into my Linux (SuSE10.3), I took care to install it's own GRUB bootloader into the Linux installation partition(must be set bootable). You have different ways of doing it, basically you can log into GRUB shell and do this:
    grub> root (hd1,0) --- my linux partition
setup (hd1,0) -- the partition I wanted to install GRUB into(which IS my linux bootable partition).
This helps when you've got your first drive MBR corrupted, and need to boot your linux somehow; then you "chainload" from the boot partition.
However, the example shown above boots my SuSE right away, without chainloading into the GRUB installed into the Linux partition. Yes, Solaris GRUB does that without complain, and I added this section manually to the menu.lst when logged in after the SXDE installation was complete. My homage to the Solaris version of GRUB in this case, which is more capable, than the Linux version. Thanks to you developers!
If GRUB couldn't boot linux kernel directly, I'd have to use chainloader string (which is also known to work) like this:
    root (hd1,0)
    chainloader +1
    map (hd0) (hd1)
And the problem I had with installation and partitioning was solved by formatting the whole drive into Solaris. In fact, there had been a lot of partition deletion/creation by me, so the Linux fdisk could see one partition configuration, while Solaris fdisk saw it all different. Well, I can see that disk partitioning in itself is a bit more complicated process, than the end-user wants to think.
Excuse me for such long letters, I just tried to give a thorough account on the matter. Hope this would help somebody out there.
    Cheers,
    Kostya

  • Booting from Flash Memory in MS-6368

    Hello all,
we are having problems to boot from a 128Mb Flash Memory. Until now we are booting from a 64Mb Flash Memory and all were ok.
When we boot from this Memory, we execute a start manager (grub): We choose a option in the start menu: for change the bios with "awfl789.exe"(in a MS-Dos Partition) or for run the machine (in another partition: Linux).
When we boot from 64Mb Flash Memory all it´s ok, but when we boot from 128Mb Flash Memory only work the Linux partition; the MS-Dos partition can´t execute the "autoexec.bat".
The program into both memories is exactly the same.
¿Anybody knows if exist problem booting or working with this sizes of Flash Memory?
    My computer:
    Main Board: MS-6368 v5.0
    Bios Version: 5.9
    Flash Memory 64Mb: PNY (manufacturer)
    Flash Memory 128Mb: PNY (manufacturer)
    Microprocesor: C3 800MHz

Are you selecting the right partition with grub's 'root' parameter?

Sure. Not-commented out lines from /boot/grub/menu.lst:

    default   0
    color light-blue/black light-cyan/blue

hd0 is a hard drive. Partitions are:
Name        Flags      Part Type  FS Type          [Label]        Size (MB)
        sdb1        Boot        Primary   Linux ext2                         131.61
        sdb2                    Primary   Linux ext3                       10001.95
        sdb3                    Primary   Linux ext3                        5000.98
        sdb4                    Primary   Linux swap / Solaris              1093.97
I have tried grub>find /[tab] to be sure a root is appropriate. Both img are there.

  • Installed 10.6.7 and Getting Kernel Panic on Boot

I got the notice to update to 10.6.7 on my 15" 2.66 i7 and when it restarted to install the update, I immediately got a kernel panic. I was able to get it to boot into safe mode and I did a time machine backup. After some research and work..
I ran a 35 pass zero out, and then straight reinstalled OS-X from my discs. I still get the same panic from boot.
panic(cpu caller 0x5592711): Unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI\".\n"0/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.3.52/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1 389

    Help...
The only thing left that I can think of is that the update fubarred the HDD. I put an aftermarket 640GB drive into it about 3 months ago. I was considering re-installing the factory drive and see what happens. I have tried everything that I could within the OSX restore discs, and nothing seems to help. It seems weird that a 35 pass + restore didn't cure it, if it was software related. Which makes me think firmware/mechanical.
    Thoughts?

I think you missed the part where I said:
"I ran a 35 pass zero out, and then straight reinstalled OS-X from my discs. I still get the same panic from boot."
I still had issues after a fresh install. So, I did a 35 pass zero out and re-installed. Same error.
I just finished installing the factory drive, and mysteriously everything works fine now. Either the update corrupted the aftermarket drive, or the update causes the computer to recognize my aftermarket drive and make it "not work". Either way, I am just going to leave the factory drive in it, as I am selling the laptop and getting a newer version.

  • Kernel Panic When Booting with Install DVD

I get a kernel panic when booting from the OSX 4 (tiger) install DVD. I am using a Quad G-5 with 8 gigs of ram.

Have to ask what version your Quad came with, whether same DVD you are using now. Apple now has Tiger DVDs w/ 10.4.6 for sale.
When booting, or when you get to the screen to select Languages on the initial screen (before you can select DU or Installer etc)?
How about Option booting to Apple Hardware Test and running extended test?
Did you run memtest or anything when you installed RAM (assuming you didn't buy it BTO w/ 8GB).
Any time adding or changing hardware, including memory, it is either a good policy or essential in some cases to boot into Open Firmware (command option of) on startup and type "reset-nvram" and 'reset-all" after installing. Same for PCIe or even swapping out disk drive (where sometimes a drive won't show up or allow you to partition).
