Solaris 10 Network Install on Netra t1.
I'm trying to install Solaris on several Netra machines that I have. None of them have CD-ROMs and none of them have an OS installed. I've been trying to setup an Ultra 80 as an install server per the instructions found in "Solaris 10 Installation Guide: Network-Based Installations" part number: 817-5504. The boot image is on the hard drive, but from there the instructions don't seem to apply to my case. These instructions seem to assume you have running machines that have a hostname and all the network settings configured. I've been looking all over the place to see if there are instructions to setup a hostname/ip config in openboot or in lom, but I haven't seen anything. The installation instructions just tell you to type "boot net - nowin" at the ok prompt, but I don't know if it searches for a DHCP server for IP config or if I have to set it myself. And with no OS installed, I can't just log in and set all these options up in Solaris. Typing "boot net" just returns the message "Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet" over and over again.
If I have to setup the Ultra 80 as a DHCP server I'll probably have to have a little instruction on that as well, if anyone knows docs for that. The Netra setup guides also seem to focus more on initial setup with an OS already installed rather than resetting or starting from scratch.
If you have no plans to install Solaris 10 on recent X86 hardware you might try running Solaris 8 or 9 as your install server, configuration for the legacy bootparamd-based Jumpstart is pretty straightforward, well documented and doesn't require DHCP.
The Netra T1s do not use DHCP to obtain boot parameters. I don't even know if the Solaris DHCP server can be configured to emulate legacy Jumpstart raprd/bootparamd. IIRC there was a way but it was not well documented, or maybe one just runs rarpd, rpc.bootparamd, and dhcpd at the same time.

Solaris 10 Network Install TFTP problem
Hi,
I tried to create jumpstart through network install with Solaris 10.
I'm running into trouble of TFTP problem when trying to add_install_client.
Here is the error I got:
./add_install_client xxx sun4u
svcprop: Couldn't find object for FMRI "network/tftp/udp6:default/:properties/restarter/st ate".
enabling network/tftp/udp6 service
svcadm: Pattern 'network/tftp/udp6' doesn't match any FMRIs, ignoring
On the client side, when I do "boot net - install", I get ARP/RARP error, obviously, the TFTP was not set up right on the server.
I could not find tftpd on the server, anyone has any suggestion what I should do to get tftpd running?
Thanks!Hi,
i don't now, why it is like it is, there is no xlm manifest for the smf, but there is a "simple"solution:
edit the /etc/inet/inetd.conf, unremark the line for tftpd. Than, when restarting the inetd with "kill -HUP <prozessnumber of inetd", you get a message in /var/adm/messages:
......... inetd[185]: [ID 702911 daemon.warning] Configuration file /etc/inet/inetd.conf has been modified since inetconv was last run. "inetconv -i /etc/inet/inetd.conf" must be run to apply any changes to the SMF
Just do what it say's: "inetconf -i /etc/inet/inetd.conf", and you get the smf entry:
# svcs | grep tftp
online 19:05:27 svc:/network/tftp/udp6:default
now it is online, and you can stop and start it with svcadm.

Anyone installs Solaris 10 in a Netra X1 ??
Hi !!
Excuse me for the tiny english, isn't my native languaje, I'm spanish ;-)
I'm trying to install Solaris 10 OS in my Netra X1. This machine doesn't have CD/DVD-ROM device, so I'm trying to install over the network. Also I have a Ultra10 working (with Solaris 10 too), which that's ready with installserver shared by NFS (step by step from documentation). Using 'add_client_install' with Ultra10 MAC address etc all good.
I can boot the setup program from the Netra X1 (I can see it with LOM throught terminal), and I can configure the net, timezone, packages to install etc. Also I can configure the slices in the disk (original IDE disk from Sun that becomes with the machine)
All's fine, but before the install program fails to finish (before the 100% installing packages). The fail consist in some errors than "Can't write /etc/vfstab" and similar.
The Solaris 10 installation always fails in this moment :-(
Well, trying again, reboot the machine (reboot in the middle of Solaris 10's setup program) and the sol10's kernel loads ok, but can't find /sbin/init and other files, so I doesn't boot properly.
Trying to change install server (deleting install server files and rebuilding again), downloading new DVD ISOs from Internet, and
i got the same error. Installing core, OEM or End-user cluster packages got the same error.
Please, help me with this question ... Thank you very much!I have successfully installed Solaris 10 on 6 Netra X1 using jumpstart. 5 with single disk and 1 with mirrored disks.
If there is nothing wrong with the target disk or the installation image then I would guess the installer is complaining that the size of one of the slices is too small. You could try installing with just a swap partition and put all the rest in the root partition. -
Hi there,
I am trying to install Solaris 9 from network to a Netra X1 server. I created an intall server on another Sun Sparc server, and added the Netra X1 as an install client. I sucessfully lunched the intallation process by "net boot". But, after I answered all the questions on the screen and started either upgrade or install, the installation process terminated with the error message "cannot read media from cdrom". It seems to me that I have the network connection already, the installation process knows where the image is. But, I cannot figure out why the installation process terminated. I would appreciate very much if anyone could give me a help.If you did not create an image on your jumpstart server then it assumes you are installing from the CDROM on the other Sun system. See InfoDoc 27794 (Solaris 8 Jumpstart Guide). This procedure is the same for what you want to do. Process 1 is Jumpstarting from remote CDROM and Process 2 is installing from image loaded on your server. See: http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/pub-cgi/retrieve.pl?doc=finfodoc%2F27794&zone_32=27794

Network install target says RARP timeout, server says reply sent
I had an existing Solaris jumpstart install server that I initially tried setting up for DHCP, and then after much failure tried resetting it to used fixed IP on a different subnet.
I've done add_install_client (without the -d dhcp option) and made sure the correct entries were in /etc/ethers and /etc/hosts
When I do boot net - install from the target machine, I get:
ok boot net - install

Do any more request/reply pairs come through on the network trace?
So according to the server feedback, it looks like the RARP lookup is working, but the client isn't getting the response. If you get unlimited RARP request lines on the client, I'd agree. If they stop, then perhaps the system is hanging after the reply.
Can you do a 'test-net' on the client OBP and see that it can view network traffic? Has the machine been booted with some OS to verify the interface is functional for receiving traffic?

Solaris Networking - The Magic Revealed
Just in case you missed this...
Sunay has been in India for the past few weeks and has actually been working! He's just finished the treatise on Solaris Networking which will become a new section of the Solaris Internals book.
In his blog, Sunay has included excerpts to give us a preview of what's to come!
Check out his blog entry: Solaris Networking - The Magic Revealed at:

Best,
- CarolHello.
I was porting another network driver to Solaris and I used GLD, too.
I do not know which GLD version I was using. (I think not v3; module name is /kernel/misc/gld, not /kernel/misc/mac.)
The documentation I used was "Writing Device Drivers" in the "Solaris 10" section on Sun's documentation site.
All include files were present on Solaris 9/Sparc and OpenSolaris/x86 (I do not have Solaris 10 installed so I cannot tell you if the include files are present.)

Acrobat 9.0 Network install not removing reader or supressing license
I am running a network install created by the customization wizard of Acrobat 9. In the wizard I told it to remove all versions of reader and Acrobat and suppress the user agreement. The program installs but users have to agree ULA, and reader 7 is still there and default.
It seems as though the MST is not being read during the install process. I have checked the setup.ini and it is pointing at the correct MST file. I have also used this same install in other remote offices without issue.
Any Ideas? Are you installing the package directly from the .msi file? If so, you'll need to specify your custom transforms by using the transforms property. For example,
msiexec /i AcroRead.msi transforms=AcroRead.mst /qb -

Include all updates for Office 2010 PP during custom network install
Hello...
I'm currently doing a custom network install of Office 2010 Professional Plus 32bit edition. The custom install is working fine with the MSP file in the \Updates folder.
I would now like to add all of the current updates, hotfixes, and service packs to the \Update folder so that Office 2010 is completely up-to-date when being deployed. I understand that I need to put the MSP files for these updates, hotfixes, and service
packs in the \Updates folder.
A couple questions:
1 - Is there one place that I can download all of the Office 2010 PP 32bit edition updates, hotfixes, and service packs... Excluding any 64bit edition updates? A repository of some sort?
2 - I'm assuming that if the hotfixes, and updates are downloaded as .CAB, I first need to extract it, get the .MSP file and put that into the \Updates folder?
3 - I think Service Packs come down as .exe's??!! If so, do I just put the .exe files in the \Update folder as well or do I need to run something special to extract them like I do with the .CAB files
I appreciate any help someone can give. If there is a better way to accomplish this, I'm open to all suggestions :)
Thanks... Frank1. Update Center for Office: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/ee748587.aspx
2. Yes, we need to get the .MSP file (BTW, the hotfixes are download as .exe file)
3. Yes, we need to get the .MSP file

Moving disks while maintaining Solaris 10 install from one v240 to another.
Hi,
I want to move a Solaris 10 install from a sunfire v240
with a single cpu to another sunfire v240 with dual cpu's. Here are the
details of the hosts as well as configuration.
I have 2 sunfire v240's. One has a single 1 Ghz cpu and the second has
dual 1.5 Ghz cpu. I want to move the disks of the single cpu host to
the host with dual cpu's. I want to keep the installed version of
Solaris 10 intact. The installation of Solaris is split across 2
mirrored disks, i.e. 4 disks in total. I am using Suns volume manager
for mirroring and also have one files system mirrored with zfs.
The questions I have are the following:
1) Can I simply shut down the servers and swap the disks to the
destination host, in the same disk slots? The controllers the disks are
on line up and are the same between the 2 hosts.
2) Will the kernel pickup the changes moving from a single 1 Ghz cpu to
dual 1.5. Ghz cpu's with out any problems? Will the kernel pickup the
faster cpu's speeds. i.e. will it know it is now running dual 1.5. Ghz
cpu opposed to a single 1 Ghz?
3) Would we have to break the mirroring on the OS before shutting it
down?
4) As another option, instead of swapping disks, could we swap the
cpus? Move the dual 1.5. Ghz cpu's to the other host? Will the
motherboards read the updates of the cpu or are their jumper settings we
would need to update?

I know there are many factors, but I'm pretty new to both unix & oracle, so I >needed some general steps to get me started. You have many options.
Since you're in 10g, Have the Target Database created in Solaris 10 x86, Oracle 11g.
you can use,
RMAN - Cross platform Transportable Tablespaces.
Datapump Export and Datapump import.
Read the following:

Solaris 10 Install Hangs at 15% on my HP DL 585?
Solaris 10 Install Hangs at 15% on my HP DL 585
I have taken out all the additional extra cards so I am left with the basic box, it has been configured to run in Raid 1 so my four disks become two.
I can still get it to bring up a shell and do other things, but the installer just appears not to want to go pass 15%

Minimize and maximize Solaris 10 installed on VM virtual Box.
How can I minimize and maximize Solaris 10 installed on VM virtual Box.
Thanks
PauloSolaris is working just fine. Everything is ok. now since I open Solaris via VM Virtual box, the Solaris main page fills only half of the monitor. I can minimize/maximize the Virtual Box. But Solaris dimensions are fix and doesn't change. This leaves me a little room to open applications on Solaris. I had the same problems with my Ubuntu, by installing adds-on it was fixed. For Solaris I installed Guest additions, didnt help.
Thanks

Adding packages from solaris 8 install disks
I need Solaris Make for Solaris 8. I have installed Solaris 8 off of downloaded Solaris 8 install disks. I apparently forgot to include Solaris Make in the install and now need to add it. When I copy the pkg SUNWxcu4t (the pkg for make and scc) and pkgadd it it claims installation is sucessful but still I have no make. It is supposed to install to /usr but there is no make there.
What am I doing wrong?
ThanksOk I have all of my compilling isuse resolved!
Just in case anyone else browsing this forum has the same problems here is what I have learned:
These are the relevent Packages:
for tools (ar, sccs, lex, yacc, make, nm, truss, ld, as)
SUNWbtool, SUNWsprot, SUNWtoo
for libraries & headers:
SUNWhea, SUNWarc, SUNWlibm, SUNWlibms
SUNWdfbh, SUNWcg6h
for ucb compat:
SUNWsra, SUNWsrh
You definatly need to use Solaris make (found in SUNWsprot), Solaris ar (found in SUNWbtool),
gnu tar, and gnu cc both from sunfreeware.com (I love pkg-get ^_^)
either add /opt/sfw/bin/ to your path or put a dynamic link for gcc into /usr/local/bin/ I prefer the latter.
and add /usr/ccs/bin/ to your path permanently.
Thanks for your help every one.
