Solaris 10 No Audio Emu10k1 SBLIVE

No Audio after installing Solaris 10 It was running on Linux and Windows for the same hardware.
Where can I find the Kernel driver list for Solaris?
Will Alsa run on Solaris? Where can I find the binaries or source for Solaris Alsa?

I realize this is ancient, but seeing as its the first thing that came up on Google I have to at least clear this up.
Solaris is derived from UNIX, so it uses the Open Sound System. This means that the OSS has to support the emu10k1 chip-set. Not only that, but at least with my card, special firmware has to be loaded too.
Windows has a special driver API specific to only Windows. Those drivers will not work on any system other than Windows and ReactOS.
Linux has the ALSA, which I'm assuming you know stands for Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. Please note the Linux part of that. I have never looked at the ALSA code so I cant say for certain if it is truly Linux only. I would assume not. If the ALSA were to support any other kernel, my guess would be that a BSD could first. You could try compiling the source's, but there's debate over which compiler to do this with.
I have heard various things about porting the ALSA over to non Linux systems. I feel like this could be far more work, and will definitely add far more complexity than it's worth. Rather than deal with porting a sound system, go and support the system we currently have. The recent development in the OSS has fixed the problems that lead to the ALSA's creation in first place.

  • Need help regarding 5.1 audio on sblive va

    dear users,
    i m tight on budget thats y cant afford the audigy series or any new hifi cards.. i need help in activating 5. audio on my sbli've value card though old but i always love it.. theres a feature li've surround and when i activate it my surround mixer shows fi've speakers and sound comes from 4 speakers i wonder how can i connect the 5th speaker.. 2ndly there r two analog outputs on the card which connects front two and rear two speakers theres another spdif output now is that to connect 5th speaker? also plz guide me about the spdif cable which will connect with sbli've value cards and how can i get its output from ? i m really amauter in this stuff plz guide and help me thanks
    regards
    muddassar

    Muddassar,
    The SB Li've Value is only a 4/4. speaker system card and that does not support a 5. speaker as you would not have the available jack for such connection.

  • Performance hit in audio playback in Solaris 10

    Hi,
    I've noticed while trying out the Solaris 10 beta 72 that the audio playback quality took a major hit since Solaris 9. I was hoping that this would go away in the Solaris 10 release, but it's not the case.
    If I try to play an .mp3 file with mpg123 or even audioplay an .au file, there are regular clicks in the playback, audible about twice per second. Booting into Solaris 9, the audio playback is perfect.
    My intuition tells me that the integration of DTrace into the kernel is the culprit, but of course, I have no proof. Can anyone think of a way to test this theory? Can DTrace be disabled? Maybe DTrace can be used to figure out what's going on?

  • Audio in solaris 10

    I have via onboard sound (KM400/KN400) abit mobo and would like to know what the procedure is to add sound. I come from a freebsd background so recompiling a kernel isn't a problem... besides the error messagebox in gnome is starting to get on my nerves. Any help is cool. Thanks

  • Sblive problems

    Hi all,
    I am trying to get an SBLive soundcard which I have recently installed to work.  I have a Gigabyte motherboard (NForce4) with onboard sound (AC97) which I have disabled.  The SBLive has been used by me in another machine and works fine.
    All the correct modules seem to load:
    $ lsmod | grep snd
    snd_seq_oss 33408 0
    snd_seq_midi_event 6400 1 snd_seq_oss
    snd_seq 51984 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
    snd_pcm_oss 50848 0
    snd_mixer_oss 17920 1 snd_pcm_oss
    snd_emu10k1 121892 0
    snd_rawmidi 21152 1 snd_emu10k1
    snd_ac97_codec 95136 1 snd_emu10k1
    snd_ac97_bus 2176 1 snd_ac97_codec
    snd_pcm 84100 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec
    snd_seq_device 7436 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi
    snd_timer 22148 3 snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
    snd_page_alloc 8840 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
    snd_util_mem 3840 1 snd_emu10k1
    snd_hwdep 7712 1 snd_emu10k1
    snd 49124 11 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,
    snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_seq_device,snd_timer,snd_hwdep
    soundcore 8160 1 snd
    But there is nothing in /proc:
    $ cat /proc/asound/cards
    --- no soundcards ---
    Alsamixer bombs out with a unsurprising (in light of above) error:
    $ alsamixer
    alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
    lspci shows the device:
    $ /usr/sbin/lspci -v | grep -i audio
    01:07.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 05)
    The wierd thing is that when I first installed it, I got these same sort of errors and symptoms, but then I updated the system with pacman, getting the latest udev (087-1) and kernel (2.6.15.6-2), after which I rebooted, and got sound!  There was a /proc/asound/card0 entry, tested xmms and Doom3, all was fine.  But a subsequent reboot resulted in the above symptoms again, and I have rebooted about 3 or 4 times since then (just in case!), but with no joy.
    I have tried running /etc/start_udev with no result.  I have also tried both forcing snd_emu10k1 in /etc/rc.conf, and disabling it and manually loading it later.
    I was wondering if there is something basic I am neglecting?
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

    Hi all,
    I've managed to nail this one (I hope - I'll be checking /proc/asound/cards for several reboots now!)
    A recurring entry in /var/log/kernel.log aroused my suspicion:
    Mar 15 16:12:22 aquilonia ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:01:07.0 disabled
    Mar 15 16:12:22 aquilonia EMU10K1_Audigy: probe of 0000:01:07.0 failed with error -5
    Which prompted me to move the soundcard to another PCI slot.  Now when I `cat /proc/asound/cards`, I get:
    0 [Live ]: EMU10K1 - SBLive! Platinum [CT4760P]
    SBLive! Platinum [CT4760P] (rev.5, serial:0x80401102) at 0xc000, irq 17
    Sound now works (xmms is streaming from WickedKarma as I type 8) ), and it's survived two reboots so far!
    I hope this helps anyone else who has a similar issue.
    Regards,
    Rob

  • Is it possible to install audio module on SGD Server with no audio driver?

    Though not listed as a hardware requirement, it would appear that I can't install the audio module on the SGD server that doesn't have a sound card and driver. We need to support audio to remote clients. So, I wouldn't have expected to need audio drivers on the server. Does anyone know if there is a way to install the audio module for SGD 4.41 on Solaris 10 without audio hardware?

    Your mid-2010 Intel iMac does not have a Thunderbolt port.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5219?viewlocale=en_US#3
    Perhaps you are confusing Thunderbolt with something else? If you're talking about a different computer, I doubt you would have a "not connected" Thunderbolt port. There is no such thing as a Thunderbolt driver. There are drivers for devices (like your Promise Pegasus R6), but Thunderbolt isn't a device. It's a communication interface.

  • America's Army

    Well, I've successfully installed and configured Arch Linux for the most part.  I like what I've seen.  My alsa is a little messed up, but I hear that's because I installed the 2.4.23 kernel.  I tried using abs to build my own, but the default build scripts errored on me.  I'm just running OSS right now, which is fine by me.
    I've got the Nvidia drivers installed and they are running smooth.
    I tried to install Americas Army next.  Arch died a slow and painful death.  First try it took X down.  Second time it just took the Xfce4 panel.  And my third attempt froze the whole system.  I find this very odd, since it's just a simple installer.  I never even got to the liscense screen.  I went and retested the same installer file in Slackware, and it ran just fine.
    It almost acted like my kernel was pre-emptive for part of the time.  My mouse would pause while it was trying to expand the installer, and apps would take forever to load.
    I really like Arch and Pacman, but this is gonna be a make or break for me.  How can an installer bring my whole system down?
    Thanks,
    Isamoor

    Well, I'm afraid the crash from the install hurt more than I originally thought.  The arch partition still boots and appears to work, but there are some things deeply wrong with it.  None of my browsers want to work right and pacman crapped on trying to install the full mozilla.  I don't think it was pacman's fault, I think specifically it was tar that has bit the dust.  Right along with firebird.
    I'm pretty sure I started with a good system.  I used a .5 base iso that I md5 checked.  I installed only the base, then updated pacman and then the rest.  Then one by one I built up a base system with pacman, just like I do with debian.  It really was running smooth until that install hitch.
    My xfree config was directly from slackware.  And the x log didn't have anything in it.  I did get a hold of the kernel log.  I can upload the whole thing, but here is the interesting part I think, the nvidia line is the end of my boot process:

    I believe my memory is fine.  I have 512 meg of ram and swap, for a total of a gig.  More swap lyin around if I want to use it.  It's the same swap I use on slack too.
    I noticed the FAT error, but I'm sure that partition is fine.  I use it in all linuxes, windows and freebsd just fine.
    I haven't wiped the install yet in case you want something else from it.
    About the alsa, I had all 4 packages installed, but modprobe claimed the snd_emu10k1 module did not exist.  I'm fairly certain this is what I would need wouldn't it be?

  • Dell Inspiron 1525

    I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 (laptop) dual booting Vista and Solaris with GRUB. Yes, I read that Vista won't boot with GRUB. But when the machine rebooted so I could fix the MBR, it just worked. So, I didn't need to use BCDEDIT (and such).
    All is well (in Solaris) except:
    1) Audio
    2) Wireless Net
    3) Net
    4) WebCam
    1,2,4 are nice-to-have(s) for me. But, #3 is a need. I've read thru docs and installed the SKGEsol driver for the Marvell device. However, the device will not show-up in ifconfig. see...
    http://homepage.mac.com/shaffer.david/dell_insp1520_net.tgz
    [dump of commands and such]
    Any advice is appreciated. And any info on #1,#2, and #4 is appreciated as well.
    The device break-down is..
    o Audio [SIGMATEL STAC 92XX]
    o Cam [Creative Labs Laptop.. Web Cam]
    o Wireless Net [Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN]
    o Net [Marvell 88E80XX]
    I've mostly searched around for networking; just 'cause it will lead to other things being easier - so I don't have to reboot and such.
    Anyway, thanks in advance.
    Other stuff..
    - Solaris boots much faster than Vista and the drive light even goes off after the login screen shows for a few seconds. In Vista, the booting is slower and even after the login comes-up, the disk light stays on for several minutes (???).
    - I was pleasantly suprised to find all of the dt tools including dtksh and dtbuilder.
    - Well, there's a lot of cool thing I want to get into with solaris, but no time to type..so..... later

    Hi,
    I have installed Solaris on my Dell Inspiron 1525 using a USB HDD. I am looking for the drivers for Wireless LAN and NIC.
    Can you guide me where i can find them.

  • Unable to play audio video files in solaris express

    I am unable to play mp3 and avi files in my newly installed oracle solaris express. I have installed 'gnome-audio', 'gnome-media', 'gstreamer', 'gstramer/plugin/gnonlin' packages. I have even installed 'IPSFWmpeg' MPEG-1 liabrary from sunfreeware repository. All these softwares are shown as installed packages in my package manager. But still on playing any video in totem movie player or audio file in rhythmbox player, a dialog box with an error message is displayed "The playback of this movie requires a MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) decoder plugin which is not installed".
    What should i do to play avi files in Totem movie player and mp3 files in Rhythmbox music player? Please don't suggest other media players because i want to use only above said totem and rhythmbox and i want to know what's wrong with my software installations?

    You can get a free MP3 codec from Fluendo (http://www.fluendo.com/shop/product/fluendo-mp3-decoder/). There are some instructions on setting it up here: http://blogs.sun.com/observatory/entry/playing_your_mp3s_with_songbird.

    I have an audio810 chip, have you tried my numbers listed in above post 8086,24d5
    also here is selected output from prtconf -v
    name='compatible' type=string items=7
    value='pci8086,24d5.1014.2c7.2' + 'pci8086,24d5.1014.2c7' + 'pci1014,2c7' + 'pci8086,24d5.2' + 'pci8086,24d5' + 'pciclass,040100' + 'pciclass,0401'
    name='model' type=string items=1
    value='Audio device'
    This page may give you a solution if the above does not work.

    In Brief:
    Solaris 10 and later supports most Intel Spec AC'97 audio, VIA 823x Audio, and some legacy Sound Blaster stuff. That covers about half of all the audio on most boards these days. There are still a few boards with AC'97 audio which the Solaris included install media won't recognize, and there is the new class of High Definition or HD Audio chips. For folks with an unknown AC'97 type of audio controller/codec combination (read your spec sheet or prtconf -pv and find the PCI vendor and device ID and web search that device to find out what it supports), most likely, you have a good chance if you download Jurgen Keil's audio drivers and install them. Jurgen supplies his own versions of VIA and AC97 Intel audio drivers. These have different module names and will not clobber the existing drivers, and his installation package does a good job of pruning and transferring PCI vendor and device IDs to his driver control where both the Sun drivers collide with his drivers. Jurgen's drivers are especially useful with some AC97 codecs that have a non-standard sample rate conversion hardware. Where the Sun audio810 driver fails, or takes a huge performance hit going with a software sample rate converter (am_src module), Jurgen's driver allows one to compute the proper sample rate and set it as a configurable in the /platform/i86pc/kernel/drv/audioi810.conf which usually gets the driver to play audio at the proper speed. The information on how to do this is actually in the .conf file itself and has come in handy on a Compaq motherboard with Intel 815 chipset and AC97 audio. Jurgen's VIA drivers eat a bit more memory for buffer space, but lower the interrupt rate dramatically, eliminating almost any hiccups on some very slow first-gen EPIA 500 fanless C3 mini-ITX systems and allow those to play flawless audio.
    good luck

  • Solaris 10 x86 5/08 audio driver for SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio

    Hello out there, I recently installed Solaris 10 x86 5/08 on my IBM ThinkPad T60 (2007-63U) and I'm really impressed how well it is working.
    The only thing I've found not working so far is the audio.
    I've installed the Solaris Audio Drivers 1.0 from:
    http://www.sun.com/download/index.jsp?cat=Hardware%20Drivers&tab=3&subcat=Audio%20Devices
    ...but it still is not recognizing the audio device.
    Everything else is working great (thank you Sun and the OpenSolaris Community!!!!!!!), so getting the audio working would be even better.
    Any pointers anyone has on what to look for on the system (e.g. in /var/adm/messages) or how to configure the audio to support the SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio would be greatly appreciated.

    ...well, I've tried building oss-v4.0-build1016-src-cddl but I haven't been able to get it to work.
    In preparation for the build, I did install Sun Studio 12 (from http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/index.jsp ), patched it, and installed gawk-3.1.6 ( from http://www.sunfreeware.com/indexintel10.html ) and ran configure/make install as instructed which successfully completed.
    The following is what I get when executing ossdetect:
    ================================================================================
    rem_drv osscore
    rem_drv hdaudio
    rem_drv ossusb
    rem_drv sadasupport
    Driver (osscore) not installed.
    unloaded osscommon
    add_drv -m '* 0666 root sys' osscore
    add_drv -m '* 0666 root sys' -i '"pci8086,27d8"' hdaudio
    add_drv -m '* 0666 root sys' -i '"usbif,class1"' ossusb
    devfsadm: driver failed to attach: ossusb
    Warning: Driver (ossusb) successfully added to system but failed to attach
    add_drv -m '* 0666 root sys' sadasupport
    /dev/mixer: No such file or directory
    ================================================================================
    To note, the Solaris 10 x86 5/08 installation I am running on is the full distribution +OEM.
    I also cannot find the "soundon" or "soundoff" scripts referenced in the OSS build instructions.
    Any pointers would be appreciated.

  • Sdtaudio on Solaris 8 on Sparc - CD-ROM audio not available

    I'm runnning Solaris 8 on an UltraSparc 1. I am trying to play audio from
    my CD-ROM through the internal speakers. I have xmcd installed and working
    and it recognizes and plays CDs, but audio isn't being routed to the
    internal speakers. When I open sdtaudio (the audio tool) I notice that the
    CD-ROM is greyed out/unavailable as a sound source.
    I'm sure I'm missing something obvious; can anyone help? How can I select
    the CD-ROM as a sound source?

    First of all there is a special doc DVD for Solaris 10 u4 (listed on the same page as installation DVD)
    Second - "release notes" stuff is always located on docs.sun.com

  • Porting Solaris 7 audio driver to Solaris 8.

    I am trying to load solaris 7 audio driver on solaris 8. It is not working.
    Also I have recompiled drivers codes on solaris 8 still not working. Something must have changed in the audio interface from solaris 8 to solaris 7. Can anyone help me to find these changes. Thanks

    This could be a big headache....but if there is a need to upgrade your OS from 7 to 8
    then you should be ready for a good backup plan....meaning, if something goes wrong at any
    point in the process, you could easily revert back to your old system environment.
    If I were the one to do this, I will do the following.
    1) I will make use of mirroring. It will be good if you could do it for the entire filesystem
    of your OS and your DB.
    2) Once I have a mirror, I will simply detach the other mirror and do my upgrade.
    Anything goes wrong, I will simply make use of the other mirror to have my old system back.
    When you upgrade your OS from 7 to 8, I had seen lots of problem where it could not complete the
    process. And the reason is the size of the Filesystem for Solaris 8 specially the root requires
    a big size as to any previous version. i usually just install from scratch. But the problem is if
    your filesystem for the OS and Applications like your DB are crossing each other then you may have
    to rebuilt your Applications too. Unless you had partition them such that they are totally separated.
    When you had succesfully installed your Solaris 8, then your next headache is to make sure
    all your applicatiions including your DB will be running fine with the new OS. Usually they
    would not as they may need to be patched. So that means you have to check the Oracle websites
    as for what are the patches needed to make your Oracle runs properlly in the new OS.
    Most important is your backup plan, which is your mirrored-disk of your running environment.
    Also you have to make a Plan of everything. Doing this will really take a lot of time.
    Good luck. I have done this before.....I'm pretty sure you could do it.
    just remember , your back-up plan should always be available anytime.
