Solaris 10 on Newisys 4300 - Cannot see disks.

Dear All,
I am trying to install Solaris 10 on this machine but after going through the initial install screens (indentify host/network setup) it quits the install process complaining that no disks are found.
The machine has an LSI Logic MegaRaid SCSI 320-2 Controller with 4 disks each of which has been initialised.
Fedora Core 3 (64bit) installs no problem on to the machine and sees all 4 disks.
The machine is a dual Opteron with 8Gb RAM. (the Newisys machines are essentially the v20z and v40z machines)
I have tried everywhere to get drivers for Solaris 10 but to no avail. Can anyone suggest where I might get drivers or where I am going worng?
Many Thanks,
Philip.

Dear All,
I am replying to my own message here as I have discovered the problem.
The issue was with the raid card which is the standard card for a Newisys 4300. This is an LSI Logic card for which there are currently no solaris 10 drivers.
In the end we had to buy a raid card from Sun and replace the original LSI Logic card. This now works fine and sees the disks.
Philip.

  • New install of solaris 10 and I cannot see the other 5 harddrives

I am a bit rusty on solaris but here is the issue and exscuse my clulessness. Just installed 10 on an e450. At the ok prompt you can query the hardware and the hard drives are there. From the OS level, they do not appear. In the solaris console I can only see the hard drive the OS is on. Question is simple; how do you make the OS see the other hard drives. Linux I use disk druid. In 8 I used disksuite, but it has been about six years since I have messed with it.

It sounds like all that was done during the installation as to set up one disk for the OS install and the remaining drive were not selected and partitioned.
Run format and see if the disks show up. If they are there, then they likely need partitioning and file systems added with newfs command. Last thing is to make sure they get mounted by adding entries in /etc/vfstab.
If you want to do volumes go to docs.sun.com and dowload the Sun Volume Manager documentation under Solaris 10.

  • Create ASM Disk Groups cannot see Disk Path to select during installation

    Hello Guys,
I am setting up 2 node RAC on 11gR2 and Linux.
I have configured all the pre-installation steps that are required to run Grid Setup as per my understanding.
I have configure SAN partitions using multipath.
I can see my SAN volume when i query multipath -l
Then i configured the raw partitions by oracleasm. Configured and then created mount points:
    /dev/oracleasm/disks/
    CRSVOL1 DATAVOL1 FRAVOL1
Later on I created the disks using oracle asm command:
    /usr/sbin/oracleasm createdisk CRSVOL1 /dev/mapper/racdbp1 and so on...
    I have run /usr/sbin/oracleasm scandisks
    Cleaning any stale ASM disks...
    Scanning system for ASM disks...
And when i list disk with command /usr/sbin/oracleasm listdisks
it shows the disk like this on both nodes:
    CRSVOL1
    DATAVOL1
    FRAVOL1
BUT during the installation screen when it comes to create ASM Disk Groups It shows nothing in the add disk frame, I cant select the volumes I can list, like i did above.
    Any hint please?
    Thanks, Imran

Thanks but my problem is very specific. I feel that i have performed all the necessary steps to get complete the step i discussed above. As per different commands all is set. But i am unable to see Disks and Disks Paths during the installation screen. This is another output to verify if the installe user have rights on the asm devices:

  • ASM with Oracle10 cannot see disks on Solaris

    Hi,
I just installed Oracle10g on Solaris-64 and first thing I tried was to create database using ASM. Seems, ASM cannot find any disks though all 6 of them are available. I tried different ways, but there is no result so far. Any idea what am I doing wrong?
    -Dmitri

    Ooh, ooh. I did. :)
I had the same problem. Permissions and ownership were set correctly. The path to the disk was set. I could “see’ and touch the disk as the oracle user. But, dbca saw nothing. Connecting to the adm instance and using the gui to create the diskgroup failed to see the disk. After MUCH searching on Oracle’s sites (otn & metalink) I found this note “Create Partitions in Solaris and add them as disks in ASM 271621.1” metalink. It is not really clear way there needs to be “500 MB” in slice 0 on a Solaris partition, I tried it at 10MB and found it worked with either slice 4 (the recommendation from the note) or slice 6 (the one that almost everyone working with Solaris [other than this note’s author] uses). The size may be much smaller. Oracle must be doing something in slice 0, but I don’t know what it is.
Anyway, after partitioning the disk and reserving 10MB in slice 0, the disk did show up in dbca. I am about to reinstall Oracle and try from the beginning.
My next challenge is how do I place the control files and online redo logs on a different diskgroup than the main database. I did not see a way in dbca to manage this.

  • Cannot see disk in J4200 by "format" command - Solaris 10

    Dear all,
I have a Sun SPARC T2000 server and a J4200 array connected to each other by SAS cable. The T2000 server was installer Solaris 10u8.
I installed CAM 6.5 software in my server and I successfully registered the J4200 array, after that, I can see all disks in this array.
However, when I issued the "format" command, I didn't see any disk in my array. I've got the same result after performing a reconfiguration boot.
I do not know how to do now to see the disks in this array.
Please help me in this case.
Thank all of you very much.

  • Unknown Error 4300, cannot burn disk in iTunes

    Good morning,
I am having the problem of not being able to burn a disc in iTunes. I am getting the message of unknown error (4300). It acts like it's burning then I get that message.
I have did set the properties in my computer to burn audio disk and also unchecked includ cd text in iTunes in the burn options as suggested on another thread.
    Any other suggestions?
    TIA,
    Blondie

    Hey there,
I am also having the same problem. I recently upgraded my system from an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800+ and Asus A8N-E motherboard to an Intel Core-Duo E8400 and Asus P5Q motherboard. The DVD drive, an LG GSA 4167b, is the same. iTunes itself runs much smoother now, but for some reason will not burn CDs (unknown error 4300). This is curious, as I have burned many CDs with this drive using iTunes on my old system. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling as well as removing and old version (4) of a Nero Suite I had kicking around. I cannot seem to find a list of iTunes error codes anywhere and there does not seem to be any real answers to this error code. Yes, the drive is plugged in properly (sATA)
    thanks very much!

  • Solaris Mgmt Console Can't See Disks

    Hi,
I recently installed Sparc Solaris 10 6/06 on a Sun Fire v440. I configured a hardware raid mirror on the built in controller card using raidctl. The two root disks are correctly mirrored and report "OK" when raidctl is issued for a status.
I have two additional disks that I wanted to mirror using SVM.
When I start the Solaris Management Console, I initially get no errors. When I navigate to the Disks section, I get a pop up error window stating:
"Attempt to get a list of all Disks failed with unexpected error: null"
If I click on the OK button on the error dialog, the management console is available but no disks are shown in the usual window.
I googled here and there for an explanation but found nothing.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    Thanks,
    Phil

  • Format cannot see disks but probe-scsi-all can

    Hi Folks,
I have attached a Storedge with five disks to an external SCSI card and can see all the disks via the probe-scsi-all command at the OBP. However when I do a boot -r I would expect to see all the disks with the format utility but I only see the internal disks.
Has anyone had this problem? If so am I missing something obvious?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
check the scsi-initiator-id in printenv on OK prompt .If it is 7 change to 6 and check whether u can see the hard disks through format command. and also u can run these three commands on root prompt to detect the hard disks
    1) # drvconfig
    2)# disks
    3)# devlinks

  • Cannot see "disks" con in airport utility

I have a MacBook Pro and AirPort Extreme base station(the one that looks like a UFO). I recently bought a 1.5TB Western Digital My Book to connect to the airport extreme. My problem is when I go into the AirPort utility and click manual setup I see the airport, internet, printer, and advanced icons but no 'disks' icon. The software for the airport is up to date because it automatically update when I set the network up as well as the Leopard that I am running on my machine. Also the hard drive has been properly formatted. Any ideas why this is doing this and how to fix it? Thanks!!

Hello kschulz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Sorry, but the earlier 802.11b/g series of AirPort Extremes' USB port does NOT support USB hard drives.

  • Upgrade to 10.4.6 - fail to boot - cannot see disk anymore

G5 20 flat panel with 150 gig hard drive. Running 10.4.5
Downloaded 10.4.6 upgrade and system rebooted. Came up with grey screen, no apple icon. Let it sit for a couple of hours.
Rebooted using install disk. Went into disk utility and my 150 gig drive is no longer there!
Rebooted in single user mode. Attempted to run fsck - nothing.
Rebooted in firewire drive mode. My laptop does not see any hard drive either.
Attempted to perform a re-install - and it does not show any destination drives.
Question: How can I re-establish the presence of the hard drive? Is there a firmware level command set I can use? Terminal commands?
    Or am I dead?

When I run re-install, it asks for the drive. Problem is, no drives are shown. It is like I have a bare board with nothing attached.
No matter what I try - disk utility, re-install, single user mode, target mode, DiskWarrior, none of them indicate that there is a drive attached to the motherboard.
Somehow, must re-establish that yes, there really is a hard drive out there.

  • Cannot see disk in Utility

    Hi everyone,
A friend gave me a new external HD, which I reformatted to MS DOS (so Mac & Windows could see it -- was that the right format?). The HD shows up on my Macs when I plug it directly in each of them, but I don't see it showing up when I plug it into the Extreme (via the utility).
I tested one of my other external HD's and could see it fine in the utility. I believe they are both formatted the same too -- any suggestions? Also, any suggestions on the best format option for the external HD?

  • Cannot see more than one shared virtual disk at a time

I have multiple virtual disks configured and as I add them to the specific virtual machine im using it modifies the vm.cfg as follows:
    disk = ['file:/OVS/running_pool/110_openfiler/System.img,hda,w',
    ',hdc:cdrom,r',
    'file:/OVS/sharedDisk/openfiler-ocs-u01.img,hdd,w!',
    'file:/OVS/sharedDisk/openfiler-ocs-u02.img,hde,w!',
    'file:/OVS/sharedDisk/openfiler-SAN-test.img,hdf,w!',
when the machine boots up the contents of /dev only contains the shared drive hdd, thus I cannot see hde or hdf.
One thing I tried was to edit the vm.cfg after adding the shared drives to the machine to mimic:
    disk = ['file:/OVS/running_pool/110_openfiler/System.img,hda,w',
    ',hdc:cdrom,r',
    'file:/OVS/sharedDisk/openfiler-ocs-u01.img,sda,w!',
    'file:/OVS/sharedDisk/openfiler-ocs-u02.img,sdb,w!',
    'file:/OVS/sharedDisk/openfiler-SAN-test.img,sdc,w!',
This allows me to see all three drives when I issue fdisk -l

I found that there are 4 IDE disks and 7 SCSI disks at most for HVM guest on Oracle VM 2.1 version. For IDE disks, The available disknames are from hda to hdd; and for SCSI disks, are from sda to sdg. you may make test about it. :)

  • Cannot see EMC PowerPath devices from ASM instance on Solaris 10 x86

    Hello,
I'm trying to use EMC PowerPath devices as ASM disks, but cannot see any usable disk
    from the ASM instance.
    My configuration:
    Hardware: Sun X4600M2
    Solaris 10 8/07 x86_64
    EMC PowerPath 5.0.2_b030
    Oracle 10.2.0.1.0
The PP devices are /dev/rdsk/emcpower* which are softlinks to the correpsonding /devices/pseudo/emcp*.
Since I know that these devices must have suitable permissions, I've set ownership and
    permission of e.g. /devices/pseudo/emcp@1:a,raw to oracle:dba and 660. The ASM instance's
init.ora file has *.asm_diskstring='/dev/rdsk/emcpower*', so I assume it will scan all
/dev/rdsk/emcpower* softlinks and fetch the ones with sufficient permissions. But nonetheless
a 'select count(*) from v$asm_disk' gives me 0, i.e. nothing.
I've just read some recommendations of using slice 6 of the disk with partition type 'usr', but
this seems to me quite superficial. I would like to use simply slice (=partition) 0 starting from
    cylinder 1.
I would be very glad for any solution.
    Best regards
    Udo

    Problem solved.
After some tests with plain files instead of devices via undocumented parameter
asmallow_only_raw_disks=false in order to check ASM functionality,
I've finally created new node devices only for oracle (and set_asm_allow... back to true).
original EMC PowerPath pseudo devices (e.g.):
    -bash-3.00$ ls -l /devices/pseudo/emcp@13:a,raw
    crw------- 1 root sys 215, 832 Dec 10 15:29 /devices/pseudo/emcp@13:a,raw
corresponding new character device with proper ownership and permissions:
    -bash-3.00$ ls -l /u01/app/ora-dev/raw/emcp13a
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 215, 832 Dec 10 14:56 /u01/app/ora-dev/raw/emcp13a
    With *.asm_diskstring='/u01/app/ora-dev/raw/emcp*' in ASM-instance's init.ora,
I was able to see the devices via select * from v$asm_disk and could create the
    ASM diskgroups.

  • AEBS cannot see both disks in 2 disk enclosure set to JBOD

I have a MacPro 3.1 and AEBS, the computer runs 10.6.8 and Win 7. All most recent updates installed on both OSes and the AEBS.  I have a generic (bought at Fry's) HORNETTER, 2 disk external USB enclosure containing two (2) 500GB hard drives, both formatted to FAT32 for easy sharing purposes with win, which is connected to the AEBS via its USB port. The enclosure is set to JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks), so I can see each one individually.  The enclosure is externally powered.  I have had problems in the past with this set-up off and on.  Now it is VERY tempermental, sometimes it works, most times not and now over the last couple months it has stopped working for all intents and purposes.
The problem I get is that the AEBS does not see both drives, only one. This happens in OS x and Win 7.
I get an error saying there is a problem with the disk, connect it to the computer directly and run Disk Utility to check for errors.  So I do this every time and it returns no errors. Both disks can be mounted no problem if connected directly to the computer.  But if I unplug it from the computer and plug it back into into the AEBS it stops working again.
I have this same problem with my HTPC Mac Mini 2.1 (C2D 2/0Ghz).  I tried connection it with the same config and got the same problem, only one disk shows of the two in the enclosure.
Is there anything I could do to resolve this? I have searched high and low for a direct answer, but only see confusing responses and nothing direct on point.  I apologize if this is a common issue.
I am not trying to do any Tim Machine backups, just using it one drive to store my media (music, video) and the other drive as a extra storage/share volume/hand backup of important files.  I like having it available off the AEBS so I can access the music and video from my HTPC Mac Mini and my DVR Windows machine, as well as using them both as a easy swap for mac files I drop there for when I'm booted into Windows.
    Any help would be appreciated.

UPDATE: I read some tips on other related issues, and so I tried connecting a POWERED USB HUB (a Targus brand 4 port AC powered USB hub I had lying around) to the AEBS and then the external enclosure to the hub.
No success, and two different problems.
In OS X I can now SEE both disks (where before  only saw one disk), but the problem now is even though I can see both disks I can only access one (the one I could NOT access before).  The disk I could access before is not visible but when I try to double click on it to mount it, i get a spinning blue circle and eventually the request times out with an error  which makes no sense, but says:
"There was an error connecting to the server “Lou's AirPort Extreme”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator."
When dismissed this is followed byt eh additional error message:
"The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “BACKUP” can’t be found."
On Win 7, I now cannot see the AEBS at all, and neither disk is visible.
    *sigh*
    Back to square one......
SECOND UPDATE: Connected a USB thumb drive to the Powered HUB and it shows up fine.  So now I am just totally confused.

  • Moving TM disk from Network to USB: cannot see previous backups

    Hi,
I have decided to move my external USB disk from the Airport Extreme USB port to my computer USB port to speed up backups and restores.
Unfortunately it seems that I cannot see anymore previous backups in the disk using TM.
The disk was accessed through the network and it was setup to have user level access to it: each user have his folder on the disk.
So, what I have done is to move back the disk to my computer, I have run disk utility to check and fix the disk since when the drive is attached to the AE with user privileges, it will report errors once you connect back to the computer. Once that permission errors were addressed, I have moved the time machine backup to the disk root and I have told TM to use this new disk as backup location.
Then I have made a new backup to the disk and it seems that TM was able to detect the previous backups because it has added only few GB to the backup.
Then I have moved to a random folder were I have made changes, and I have started TM: when I do that, TM window will switch me back to "MyComputer" where I can see all drives.
I can move around but I am unable to move back in time, like there are no other backups.
TM backup file is about 140 GB and I can fully access it by using finder: I see that all previous data is there, but TM cannot see it.
I have not changed computer name,
I have tried to use the TM option to "open other TM disks" but It doesn't show any other disk in the select window.
Does anybody know what is happening and how I can try to fix?
    thanks!

    Thanks for the replies,
I would like to move from a wired network TM backup to a local firewire/USB backup.
So the first error I have made is to have deleted the user directory in the Airport Extreme external USB disk: I have moved the TM sparse bundle file to the new location but I didn't noticed that other hidden files were there.
Second, I was unable to browse the older TM backups using TM and it seems that I cannot "browse other TM backups" using such TM option because the window were not showing me any drive.
I have then realized that I have to mount the sparse bundle to see it in such TM option: then it seems to work perfectly.
So there is no need for me to find a solution to use again the same backup with the local disk: if I need something in future I will use the TM option to browse other backups and I think I will be able to recover any file from there. May be I cannot recover mails in this way.
I think it is also possible to fix by using the procedure listed in the previous link: I didn't try just because I don't want to spend more time on this issue and because I have not enough free space on other drives... but...
    ...it should be enought to:
    1- connect a new drive to the computer;
    2- mount the old TM sparse bundle image;
    3- use SuperDuper to copy all contents of mounted sparse bundle image into the new attached drive;
contents of the sparse bundle image seems to be equal to the structure and names used by a new fresh backup on a local USB disk, so I suppose that it could work... if someone wants to try a tell if it is so... thanks!
