Solaris 10 on SuperMicro H8SSL-i ... chipset Q

Hi --
just for kicks, I was trying to install Solaris 10 (x86 natch) on a SuperMicro H8SSL-i board. It uses the ServerWorks (Broadcom) HT1000 chipset for its SATA interface. But at the initial device detection, I get a failure at the PCI detection, IDE reset, etc.
I thought from this HCL entry that I could get somewhere with it.. http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/systems/details/2109.html but so far no dice. On my current motherboard there are only two choices for the SATA mode "IDE" and "MMIO" so i don't really have a PATA option.
Any thoughts on this? Is there a chance that somewhere support for this mobo is being done? thanks!

ah ok so according to that HCL entry I need the IDR installed. We do have a support contract so hopefully I can wrestle it from them.

• Deal-breakers for real use of Solaris 11 Express

I run Solaris 10 U9 for my home 12TB NAS box - based on Supermicro H8SSL-i2 motherboard (ServerWorks HT1000 Chipset and Dual-port Broadcom BCM5704C) and their 8-port SATA2 PCI-X card (AOC-SAT2-MV8). It's a great (but aging) platform and a rock solid OS with the unbeatable ZFS volume manager/filesystem.
However, despite my willingness to run Solaris 11 Express in this role, I can't because of these deal-breakers:
1) Lack of a full-featured installer that allows me to lay out or preserve existing partitions the way I want. Making /var a separate file system is a must. Ideally, I'd be able to run multiple versions of Solaris on the same box by customizing grub, and use my ZPOOLs on either Solaris 10 or 11 Express while I learn the new OS.
2) Lack of support for the Broadcom BCM5704C dual-port gigabit NIC (and others), which work wonderfully under Solaris 10, but are badly broken under Solaris 11 Express. I know I could disable the on-board Broadcom NICs and go buy an Intel card - but why the need for this? Won't there be a fix for Broadcom NICs?
3) Lack of support for modern, generic, server-class motherboards and PCI-e multi-port SATA/SAS cards. I wonder about the future for Solaris without support for modern, affordable x64 server hardware.
Maybe I'm missing the point and Solaris 11 Express is only intended to be run as a virtual machine under VBox or VMware. But it would sure be nice to be able to run it on my real hardware - even if it is just a small hobbyist rig. Any suggestions?
Regards,
Mike

In Solaris 11, you get a separate /var by default. If you update from Solaris 11 Express to Solaris 11, this transition doesn't happen automatically. If you decide to tackle it on your own, you need to be sure that it is done in a way that beadm, pkg, and other consumers of libbe will handle properly. I would recommend something along the lines of the following. This is untested and may break your system - prove it out somewhere unimportant first.
Do the work in a new boot environment so you reduce the likelihood that you will break things in an unrecoverable way.
# beadm create sepvar
# beadm mount sepvar /mntFigure out the name of the root dataset of the new boot environment, then create a var dataset as a child of that.
# rootds=$(zfs list -H -o name /mnt)
# zfs create -o mountpoint=/var -o canmount=noauto $rootds/varMount this new /var and migrate data
# mkdir /tmp/newvar
# zfs mount -o mountpoint=/tmp/newvar $rootds/var
# cd /mnt/var
# mv $(ls -A) /tmp/newvarUnmount, remount
# umount /tmp/newvar
# beadm unmount sepvar
# beadm mount sepvar /mntAt this point /mnt/var should be a separate dataset than /mnt. The contents of /mnt/var should look just like the contents of /var, aside from transient data that has changed while you were doing this. Assuming that is the case, you should be ready to activate and boot the new boot environment.
# beadm activate sepvar
# beadm unmount sepvar
# init 6

• Solaris 9 compatble hardware

Hi,
I am planning to buy a new motherboard to install a solaris 9 OS. When i look to HCL list in sun website, i found the montherboard GA-81PE1000 is compatible to install but which is not available in the market.
when i enquired in the Computer shop The shop person advised that the new release of motherboard from gigabyte GA-81PE1000-G only available so before i want to buy this mother i would like to confirm is it a compatible motherboard to install Solaris 9 or not ?
could any one guide me regarding this issue, if you are not sure about this is there any other motherboards from gigabyte which are avaialable in the market and compatible to install solaris 9.
thanks in advance
harry

hi
before you search for the motherboard, i would like to clarify that solaris 9 search for x86 based chipset not any specific make motherboard, i have installed solaris 9 on almost all the motheboard and all the x86 based cpu like amd and cyrix.
try installing on any of the old computer having 96 mb of ram and 32 bit processor even celeron will do.

• Sata: silicon image 3112a

how install solaris 10 on box with this chipset?
i`ve error not disk found, but full scan recognizes this chipset

According to the /boot/solaris/devicedb/master file, Solaris 10
recognizes the following IDE controllers:
pciclass,0101 pci-ide msd pciclass ata.bef "IDE controller"
pci1095,3112 pci-ide msd pci ata.bef "Silicon Image 3112 SATA Controller"
pci1095,3114 pci-ide msd pci ata.bef "Silicon Image 3114 SATA Controller"
pci1095,3512 pci-ide msd pci ata.bef "Silicon Image 3512 SATA Controller"The first line is a generic catch-all for (PATA) PCI-IDE controllers.
The remaining three lines seem to add support for 3 different
SATA devices from Silicon Image, identified by a PCI vendor id
of 1095, and PCI device ids 3112, 3114 or 3512.
If you hit ESC and check the list of installed hardware, what
exactly is listed for the SATA controller?
Does it list any of the three device ids 3112, 3114 or 3512?
Does it list a generic description ("PCI Mass storage device")?
Or does is specifically list one of the descriptions strings from the
above except from the master file (e.g. "Silicon Image 3112 SATA
Controller")?

• Intel Pentium M/855GME

Has anybody tried Solaris 9 with the new 855GME chipset?

Hi
Ram modules for especially for alviso chipsets are not known to me but the Satellite A50-522 supports definitely the PC2700 PA3313U-1M1G memory module.
I assume the PA3313U-1M1G and the PA3313U-2M1G are the same memory modules.
The PA3313U-1M1G and the PA3313U-2M1G memory module support the same specifications 1 GB - SO DIMM 200-pin - DDR - 333 MHz PC2700
I think you can use both modules without any problems.

• Installation problem Solaris 10 6/06 on Supermicro PDSMi mainboard

Have anyone success Solaris 10 x86 6/06 installation of Supermicro PDSMi mainboard?
I booted system on PXEBoot from network installation server. Kernel loads, but hangs after:
SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_118855-14 32-bit
Copyright 1983-2005 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
I've also try disable ACPI, but no success.
Have any ideas?
Thanks!

Ok.. after more testing i found following:
- When ACPI is disabled, system hangs forever. I run kernel debugger (kmdb) and set:
moddebug /W0x800000000
:c
... lot module debugging ...
load 'fs/fifofs'
(and hangs here).
- When ACPI is enabled, system boots up and OpenWindows installer ask about install language. But now keyboard+mouse doesn't work anymore.

• If anybody can Help me! installing solaris 8 in intel chipset 820v

Hi All,
During installation of Solaris 7 or 8 in Intel plateform, I have encountered following problem listed below.I have also checked the motherboard's chipset with Sun's Hardware Compatiability List, it is there.
My Machine: Intel PIII
Motherboard: Intel 820
Processor Speed : 600Mhz
Ram 128Mb
Operating system installed : Solaris 8 or 7
The problems:
1. During the boot time I used to see:
SUN-OS Intel Plateform edition Primary Boot system VCN 2.0
Warning: ACPI table not in reclaim memory.
2. When This window disappear I will have this window:
SUN-OS secondary Boot Version 3.0
Solaris Intel Platform Edition Booting system
3. During when system is comming up I used to see after following error after when systems shows :
Warning: Can not merge HWconf devinfo Node Fdc@1,3f0
Therefor, please advise how I could cope with this problems?

there are security levels for wpa connection. such as low- normal - high ( 64 bit -128 bit -256 bit )
if you select 64 bit secure method, you need to enter 8 characters for password. if you enter 7 and save and exit, some computers can connect but some not. make sure you have 8- 16- 32 characters and entered correctly.
to check if it's password issue, disable the secure connection and try again. if it doesn't work, we can try some other solutions.

• Driver for NM2200 chipset on Solaris 8, IA

Hi,
Does anyone know about a driver for NM2200 (Neomagic AGP video+soundcard) on solaris 8.
I'm trying to install Solaris 8 7/2001 on a Toshiba Tecra 8000.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Dwai.

Hi Senthil,
Thanks for the suggestion.
I already looked there, but there doesn't seem to be any mention of NeoMagic NM2200 chipset.
I wanted to know if there was iany patch released for this or not.
Otherwise I have the most horrendous display with the standard 16-bit SVGA driver.
Also, Sol 8 7/01 doesn't seem to recognize the 3com pcmcia ethernet adapter.
(I guess I'll search around for some more time and then move on to RedHat 7.1 which is said to install rather smoothly on the Tecra 8000.)
Thanks
Dwai.

• Solaris 11.1 on Supermicro X10SAT mobo problems:

When I try to run liveUSB Solaris 11.1 on the motherboard Supermicro X10SAT with an Intel Xeon E3-1245v3 it does not work well. The "Device Driver Utility" reports three problems:
-Network... Ethernet controller
-................Ethernet controller
-Other...... Intel Corporation Lynx Point Kt Controller
Can I solve these problems in some way? The X10SAT has intel i210 and i217 network interfaces. Can I download drivers from somewhere? And, Solaris also reports errors during boot up of the USB live stick, dmesg shows:
[ID 946290 kern.warning] WARNING: audiohd#0: timeout when get response from codec: wid=4, verb=0x0f02, param=0x004c

PS. Does ZFS support TRIM in Solaris 11.1?

"For the network interface. If the i210 interface is detected as 8086,1533 then you can use the driver/network/ethernet/igb driver that is available with SRU 11 and 12.
The other interface is currently unsupported."
The i210 interface is detected as "8086,1533" but how would I make it work? What is SRU 11 and 12?
As "rukbat" said, I have posted some additional details in another thread. If someone helps me on this one, I will clean this up and write down the solution to help the Solaris community.

• PCI id problem under Solaris-8,9,10

In attempting to qualify a SuperMicro X5DA8 dual CPU dual channel SCSI card I have found a problem with the PCI id's for the Adaptec 7902 (Ultra-320) chipset. My question is whether the problem is SuperMicro's, Sun's or Adaptec's.
The DCA->Device Tasks->View/Edit Devices displays the PCI id of the two SCSI controllers as follows:
[ ] PCI: 9005,801f.9005.5f.3 Adaptec AIC-7902 - Ultra 320 SCSI
The /etc/driver_aliases file has the entries:
cadp "pci9005,5f"
adpu320 "pci9005,801f"
The file: /boot/system/driverdb/master has the entries:
pci9005,801f pci9005,801f msd pci adpu320.bef "Adaptec AIC-7902 - Ultra320 SCSI"
pci9005,5f pci9005,5f msd pci cadp.bef "Adaptec AIC-7896 SCSI"
Checking in www.pcidatabase.com shows that the two above identifiers map to:
9005,801f Vendor Adaptec: Ultra320 SCSI Controller
9005,5f Vencor Adaptec: Ultra2 SCSI Controller !!!!!
The presence of the 9005.5f is confusing Solaris to the point that it is loading the incorrect driver and crashing. It is my belief the the 9005.5f device identifier is incorrect, or is it? Is this identifier put in firmware by SuperMicro or is it possibly embedded in the AIC-7902 chips?
As I am not an OEM to SuperMicro or Adaptec I can't ask them directly. If anyone has any insight as to whose problem this is I can hopefully report it as a bug to the appropriate party and perhaps get it fixed.
Kudos to j.keil for helping me sort this out. I am able to get Solaris-10 running on this board but only after hacking the aforementioned files. It would be nice to have it work out of the box.

• Solaris 8 Installation on Intel - PROBLEM

Hi,
I am trying to load Solaris 8 on Intel machine , 810 motherboard , 128MB SDRAM , 20GB HDD
but whenever I try to load with CD-1 I have a problem like Webstart Installation 3.00 start and when he ask me language , after that message comes no hardisk foung and it stop immediately at # prompt.
Whenevr I start with CD-2 , he ask me for Interactive / Jump Start , I choose Interactive , it start laoding KERNAL and machine automatically reboot , again reinstall , at that same point machine reboot.
Tell me what to do , I cant go ahead , I want to load Solaris 8 , and see ..
HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Regards,
Mahen.

I think the problem source is the BIOS ACPI Power Manager, many of motherboards ACPI always let the system auto-reboot during loaded the OS kernel.
I had tried to install Windows2000 and Solaris8 10/01 on Intel 810 MB, the system always rebooted again and again, I suppose that may be some bugs on 810 chipset !!
Try to reconfigure the BIOS ACPI function, such disable it.
But, I'm not sure that is work for your case.....
