Solaris 10 or OpenSolaris

Hi,
I plan to install Solaris on my PC. I wonder which one I should install, Solaris 10 or OpenSolaris? Is there any difference between them?
Thanks,
Zhongze

Thanks a lot for your response. Is pkg stuff
available on Solaris 10 or just available
on Nevada? Nevada is just the "next" version of Solaris. It's under development.
Like all versions of Solaris so far, it uses the SYSV style 'pkg' stuff.
I installed ubuntu on my laptop. apt is
really cool. I'd like to use pkg to
upgrade the system."Solaris" isn't going to do that.
You can install Nexenta, which combines the OpenSolaris kernel with a Debian/Ubuntu userland. Read the details here:
http://www.gnusolaris.org/
You may also be interested in the Solaris Express Developers Edition. It's a distribution with several development tools added in. It does have (much) higher memory requirements to complete the install, so don't try it on a low-end machine.

  • Where to begin with Solaris?

I'm interested in exploring Solaris and not quite sure where to begin.  Currently running Ubuntu 12.04 on a dual-quad core Intel Xeon, which version of Solaris will work best?

    Hi there,
you might want to grab a copy of the Open Solaris Bible (OpenSolaris Bible: Nicholas A. Solter, Jerry Jelinek, David Miner: 9780470385487: Amazon.com: Books) which, while being a little outdated, gives a quite decent jump start into the matter. Then install Solaris - should be piece of cake if you know Linux - and simply start comparing to what you know from Linux. Alternatively, if you don't have access to Solaris, go for OpenIndiana (http://openindiana.org), which is a true descendant of Sun's former open source variant, OpenSolaris. The operating system is free, the community is friendly, and you learn quite a lot you can take with you when you start using 'real' Solaris.
    Cheers

  • Oracle RAC SOlaris 10 in Containers or in LDOMs

I want to run Oracle RAC in Solaris 10 containers or in Logical Domains. Is ORacle RAC supported in Containers or LDOMs? Has anyone experinece with these Oracle RAC environments?

I didn't see your system listed in the Solaris or OpenSolaris hardware compatibility list. It may very well be that it is not supported for Solaris. Check here to see: http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/search.jsp
You may also want to contact Sun and see if it is supported.

  • Fresh install of solaris 10 x86 hangs after 'Configuring devices'

    Hi All,
I just received a new SuperMicro server with an LSI MegaRAID SAS 9261-8i controller. While trying to install Solaris 10 it hangs after "Configuring devices". I checked the LSI page and Solaris 10 is supported according to them. Any ideas how to proceed?
Fairly new to Solaris on x86 hardware.
The system has a Xeon X5690 processor in an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC motherboard. The motherboard documents claim that not disabling usb 2.0 can hang an install. I have disabled the usb 2.0 in the bios but the system still hangs. Booting it with the -kd and -kv options don't give much information.
Any help is appreciated. I might be returning these machines if I can't get this worked out.
    Cheers,
    Steve

See if you can add the verbose option "-v" to the kernel boot options. I think you can get to the GRUB menu off the Solaris 10 install disk. That should tell you what device is causing the hang, or at least the last device that worked.
Also, can you try Solaris 11 and see if it gets past that point? A few years ago I has a similar issue with Solaris 10 on a Dell server. Solaris 11/OpenSolaris worked fine, though. IIRC I could work around the issue if I disabled the 2nd CPU - Solaris 10 had a problem bringing up the 2nd CPU on that Dell's CPU/MB config.

  • What happended to the Solaris Crash Analysis Tool 4.2 for Solaris 10?

What happended to the Solaris Crash Analysis Tool 4.2 for Solaris 10?
I'm trying to debug a kernel panic under Solaris 10 on sparcv9. I tried the SUNWscat 4.1 package but it core dumps on Solaris 10. I found a blog entry that described the problem and mentioned a version 4.2 fix. That was from May 2006, but I have not found any update sense then. Was 4.2 ever released or is their an alternative tool for Solaris 10 that I can use?

One problem is that those of us who develop Solaris CAT do so as a "hobby" as it's not part of our actual jobs. But he good news is that management gave us the time to get a release out and 5.0 is now available here . We're now planning 6 month releases so we don't have a 5 year delay between updates.
BTW, the Solaris Crash Analysis Tool supports Solaris 10, OpenSolaris/Solaris Nevada, sparc, and x86/x64.
There are so many enhancements and bug fixes that I'd recommend reading the release notes (SUNWscat/docs/index.html).

  • A simple question: think of shutdown in solaris

i'm a beginner in Solaris. i installed it as a guest OS in virtualbox.
i found these commands: "shutdown, halt, poweroff, init." can't really shutdown the machine as a non-root user.
However, i can just simplely click the button "Shut Down" to shutdown machine on graphic interface as a non-root user.
What did the button do in background? Does it work in terminal?

What version of Solaris or OpenSolaris are you using?
    cat /etc/release and post.

  • Best source of binary packages for Solaris 10

Which is the best source, Sun's companion CD, www.sunfreeware.com, www.opencsw.org, www.blastwave.org, or others?
    Thanks,

Depends on your needs. Ie what criterion you use to decide "best".
blastwave and opencsw are more "modern" complete repositories.
They come with a "pkg-get" system for recursively fetching a package and all its depencies.
But they have a slightly higher startup cost as you have to install the pkg-get framework. Not that its hard.
You can't just download a package off the website and install it.
These days blastwave has made a cut with the past and only supports solaris 10/opensolaris.
opencsw is a fork that still supports solaris 8+.
the sun cd is a old snapshot of a small subset of whats on sunfreeware.
So if you just want one simple package. Grab it off sunfreeware.
If you want something more complex. eg a bunch of packages or a package with complex dependencies, its worth making the effort to get it off blastwave. Unless your running solaris 8/9. In which case use opencsw.

  • Why does Sun Studio need NetBeans?

    Hi!
Why does Sun Studio need a NetBeans installation for running successfully? If I am not too wrong, I believe Sun Studio has the same relation to the NetBeans project as Star Office has to OpenOffice.org?
Now, coming to the solution. I am using Sun Studio 12 on Solaris:
    amit@opensolaris:~$ sunstudio --netbeanshome /export/home/amit/netbeans-6.5beta/bin/
    Validating NetBeans IDE at: "/export/home/amit/netbeans-6.5beta/bin/"
Sun Studio is unable to find a supported version of the NetBeans IDE at the specified location.
Sun Studio requires a NetBeans IDE version 5.5.1 with NetBeans C/C++ Development Pack version 5.5.1
installed. Sun Studio looks for a valid NetBeans IDE installation in the following order:
    1) Location specified with --netbeanshome command line option
    2) At /opt/netbeans-5.5.1 location, if exists
    3) At /opt/SUNWspro/../netbeans-5.5.1 location, if exists
    4) At /opt/SUNWspro/../../netbeans-5.5.1 location, if exists
Please run the System Preparation Tool (prepare_system), if available, to set up your environment.
As is apparent, I have a NetBeans 6.5 Beta build.
    What is the solution?
    Thanks,
    Amit

The realtionship from SunStudio to NetBEans is more than a line from A to B.
Ideally SunStudio releases would track NetBeans releases.
However, NetBeans evolves at a rather fast pace. At the same time SunStudio
also contains compilers which have their own products to coordinate with ...
OS releases, new SPARC chips and Sun system releases.
These releases never coincide so SunStudio tends to lag in it's dependencies
on NetBeans and as a result ships with it's own copy.
We used to actually build our own, sometimes tweaked, NetBeans for SunStudio.
Weve made some progress in that we just pick released NetBeans bits and re-ship them.
We're working on the ability for SunStudio to use NetBeanses which are already
    installed.
To make older SunStudios use newer NetBeans is a tougher proposition but
we're dedicating grey cells to that matter as well.
If you really want a NB 6.5 based SunStudio wait a bit. We'll be releasing
SunStudio SX based on NB 6.5 shortly.

  • FlowChart Applet.. where to begin?

    Hello =)
could any of you help me please
I have to make an Applet to build FlowCharts..
this applet eventually has to integrate with MySQL database to save and fetch data to rebuild the FlowChart

    Hi there,
you might want to grab a copy of the Open Solaris Bible (OpenSolaris Bible: Nicholas A.
    Cheers

  • Cluster on VM

    Hello,
I have speant the last 4 days trying to build a Virtual cluster on ESX server 3.0.2 with Solaris 10. The OS installs no problems, I can ping and telnet to each other with no catches. However, I first installed Sun Cluster 3.2, tried to get it to install, and I kept running into an issue where my nodes wouldn't boot into cluster mode. After reading at this website and various others, I come to realize that Cluster 3.2 is only available in 64bit editions. However, one feed said that cluster express is 32-bit available. So I download version 2-08 and try to install it and I keep getting a Java error. I'm thinking that I need to perhaps update and patch my server, however, updating it makes it so that the server won't boot up again. I was booting 120007-14 kernel patch, and upgraded to the current one (unfortunatly, because the server wouldn't boot up, and I didn't write down the version before re-installing, I don't remember which patch it was) which made my system extremly unstable.
My question is, before I forget....What are the required patches for open cluster to run on Solaris 10.
Also, before someone says install Solaris 11 (OpenSolaris) I have not been able to successfully install it on VM ESX 3.0.2. If any one has been able to, let me know how or even better, send me your image!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Luke

  • PLZ HELP ME.I BEG YOU ALL!! ABOUT MY SOUNDLESS VIDEO

    hi again...
i am getting desperate. can someone help me plz.
When i play my video in my ipod, it has no sound. I had tried few video converter programs that some of you recommend. But it doenst seems to solve my problem. Here is the story.
    Videora ipod converter
    I 'transcode' the video.
Then, i use my iTunes to put the video into my ipod.
But still the video can be played but no sound came out.
    MEGP Streamclip
I open a video in that program.
Some say i have to find a ipod button after doing that.
But the thing is that i can't find it.
    can someone please teach me?

How many times are you going to post this same question, today?
If you are stating that the keyboard stops working,
then you may have a hardware issue; but you may have a software configuration issue
You can solve that by installing your Solaris all over again, from the beginning.
... but you didn't actually tell us any usable information.
All you said was "help me, because something doesn't work".
We're not in the same room with you and cannot see what you're doing, or not doing.
You do not tell us anything about your computer.
You do not tell us what version of Solaris is installed. (Solaris, Solaris Express, OpenSolaris)
You do not tell us if this is a new symptom or whether it NEVER worked.
Are you at home and "playing" with Solaris?
Are you at work and using a computer provided by your employer?
You leave us all to just guess, and therefore give inaccurate responses.

  • Quarterly Patches for OEM

    Greetings,
I have completed the upgrade/installation of OEM 12.1.0.3.0 and most of the agents. My OMS and repository are on separate Linux servers. I am now faced with applying quarterly patches to my installation. The RDBMS is not an issue, it is the OMS & Weblogic server which have me confused. Reading through the patch release notes and documentation I am not sure how to decide which, if any, patches apply to my installation. Which patches must I apply to my Weblogic server and which to the OMS? Is there one patch set which will patch everything in one pass? I would appreciate the benefit of anyone else's experience and guidance.
    Thank you.
    Bill Wagman

Others may correct me here, but my perception was
    always that ...
    Solaris Express is the work-in-progress
version of the next iteration of the OS.
(I consider it the beta of what will eventually
    become Solaris.)
Thus it never gets patched, it gets replaced by the
    subsequent release of Express.Correct.
I also consider OpenSolaris to be the alpha that
could evolve into Solaris Express.OpenSolaris is the open-source code base.
Solaris (and Solaris Express) is a specific distribution that uses not only OpenSolaris, but also some closed-source components.
Solaris Express is a snapshot of the current work on 'nevada', the next version of Solaris.

  • No network and Broadcom wireless card

I'm new to Solaris OS, and I installed Solaris 10 with no network since I'm using a broadcom wireless card. Before installing Solaris10 on this box I had Ubuntu running on it and was able to use the ndiswrapper for the broadcom card.
But... I'm a bit lost now since I installed solaris 10 with no network at all. So my question is, how do I create a new network and get my broadcom card installed?

Solaris is a great OS... welcome to the fold.
First, Broadcom is not a good choice for any alternative OS including Solaris but OpenSolaris does have drivers despite Broadcom's lack of cooperation with other operating systems. I do suggest staying away from this vendor because of their "closed" nature of driver support.
That being said, the HCL at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/ can help. As well as Linux and others. While vendors like Broadcom are closed, others are not.
My favorite has been Intel 82557, 82558, 82559-controllers, I bought a bunch of them dirt cheap years back knowing they were supported with Linux, BSD and Solaris. They work well in pairs too, use then for firewalls.
The best thing we can do is only buy hardware that works with all OSes.

  • No autologin to windows desktop which runs on virtualbox for vdi

    hi
it's not possible to autologin to a windows desktop if the machine is hosted on a virtualbox host
i only see the "press ctrl alt delete" window
if i now press ctrl alt delete and provide username, password and select the domain i'm logged in so it looks like vdi dont send the credentials to this machines
    my test:
    open mstsc
fill username, password and domain and connect to the vdi host
(the same test works if the machine is hosted on vmware)
can you help me to solve this issue?
    thanks in advance

    hi
may be you are right i tried to change vrdp to rdp and had to change nat to host networking before under the pool settings within vdi
but this expect the virtual machine is connected to host networking instead of nat on the virtualbox cause all clone jobs fails?
if i change the windows template machine on the virtualbox from nat to host interface (network name is greyed out) and select the physical network interface it fails to start the machine
"Failed to open/create the internal network "HostInterfaceNetworking-nge0 Nvicida Gigabit Ethernet - VBox status code: -3700 (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND)
is it true that i have to create a bridge in the virtualbox solaris (not opensolaris) and build scripts which are running during power on / off from virtual machines to solve this issue?
