Solaris 10 SCSI

I'm using sol 10 as scsi initiator and linux 2.4 as virtual target (four disks are registered with the virtual disk). Sol 10 sends the scsi command for report_lun and shows 4 devices but they are just replications of disk 0 on linux. all the scsi requests are diverted to disk 0 cos LUN in scsi commands is always 0. Windows, Sol 9, linux 2.4 are detecing the luns correctly. this problem is coming Sol 10 & Linux 2.6.

hello,
What Sun machine, what scsi card, what patches for said card.
Do you have a scsi analyser trace of the commands?
In scsi 2 the lun field in the cmd is ignored and the lun number is extracted from the identify message the initiator would have sent after selecting the target.
What sort of scsi revision is your target emulation? you might be hitting a scsi 1/2/3 interaction problem.

Hi Jim,
MOS doc 1018739.1 describes maximum Solaris SCSI and FC targets, LUNs, and device instances.
The FC limit for maximum LUNs is either 65535 or unlimited.

Uhm... Sorry my language, im Italian ..

I have not ever had a need for gcc.
I've never found myself in circumstances where I needed to use it.
Were there any instructions in that download from SunFreeWare?
I'm not going to download it to check.
My x86 system has had Sol-7, Sol-8, Sol-9 and Solaris 10 installed to it.
I have used the same PCI ethernet card for all those distros.
It is an old DEC-21140 10/100 card I purchased at a computer swap meet
for US$ 2.00, six years ago. I use it because every OS recognizes it natively.
I've experimented with a 3COM 3C905-TX, and that one is just as compatible.
I acquired the 3COM card for US$ 5.00 at another computer swap meet.
It was more expensive, so I'm "saving" it. (Saving for what? Who knows ! )
Perhaps you could consider using a completely different Ethernet adapter.
Read the Hardware Compatibility List and use hardware that's recognized natively.

• Installation of Solaris 10 over HP server having SCSI disk

Hi,
i have "HP ProLiant DL145 G2 Server" having 2 SCSI hard drives each 72 GB. But when i m installing solaris 10, then during parttion time, it is showing 17 GB for one hdd & 35 GB for other. But i want 72 GB for parttioning.
I also conformed that no hardware problem.
HP ProLiant DL145 G2 server supports Soalris 10 .
So what is the issue , pls help ?
is issue with SCSI HDD or any other ?

Try this, Go to:
http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patchpage
and use the Patchfinder to find ITU 119376-02 and follow the instructions in the readme file.
Make sure you select Solaris Interactive Text (Console) instead of the graphical interface during installation.

• Solaris 2.6 i386 on HP NetServer E800 - problem in detecting SCSI disk

Hi people,
We have HP Netserver E800 with a 9G scsi drive attached to U2W onboard SCSI Controller.
Solaris 2.6 boot disk doesn't seem to detect the 9G drive, we assume the problem is the scsi controller did not get detected at all. I found an article that explains how to get a hard drive that is > 8Gb...but our problem is the solaris cannot see the disk drive at all.
Our current assumption is due to limitation of solaris 2.6 i386.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Asgorath,
Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you but I
am experiencing the identical problem on a HP
Proliant BL25p Blade Server. Here is my hardware
config:
CPU - Dual Opteron 2.6 Single Core
Memory - 16gb
Controller - HP Smart Array 6i
Logical drives - 1 (2x72gb RAID1+0)
I have tried the same things as you and I still get
intermittant boots. Power on and off does not always
work as the system still hangs. It's totally hit or
miss. Once it soes boot it seems to work fine. I have
also installed the latest Solaris 10 for x86 Patch
Cluster in hopes that some of the kernal patches
would fix the problem. So far no luck as the system
continues to hang...HARD!! HP was out to my site
today and the Eng. is going back to the group that
qualified Solaris10 on the HP Blades and see if they
have any input. If I receive anything back I will
post it here. I know this post is late and if you
have resolved please post your fix.Hi doc42755,
I have not come up with a solution as of yet, if I do come up with a solution i will most certainly post it here.
However, if you find the solution could you let us know in this thread aswell.
Thanks
Asgaroth

• ADAPTEC 2940UW SCSI on Solaris 8_x86

Solaris 8_x86 is able to recognize the AHA2940UW SCSI card but during bootup, the OS kept probing the card from id 0 to 15 (apd0) in an endless loop, returning timeout; reset target; target 0 lun 0......

Please advice.
Thanks

Tried that....the card was recognized...tried changing the values of the SCSI advanced setting during bootup (CTRL A)...but no avail.

• Solaris 10 x86 b72 "Cannot find boot.bin" booting from SCSI.

Hello,
After several gyrations of installation attempts and dealing with early BIOS PnP issues, I've finally managed to get Solaris 10 x86 installed on an old dual P2 333Mhz system. So far the system is running flawlessly, but I'm still not able to boot directly off the SCSI disk. The primary boot handler is erroring out that it cannot find boot.bin.
I can boot fine off of the IDE CD drive and the floppy (currently pointed to autoboot into the SCSI disk as a workaround). But when I try to boot directly off the SCSI drive, I get the error from the Solaris boot manager that it "Cannot find boot.bin".
I have booted off the CD & Floppy and compared the /boot files from both the CD & floppy, but I cannot find any difference that would prevent the primary boot loader from finding boot.bin. I've even compared files to make sure they were not corrupt, and even force re-installed the boot handlers, and manually partioning, always with the same results. I've also tried both enabling and disabling the DOS >1G translation of the Adaptec SCSI BIOS with no change. I can't find any reason that the boot loader is not seeing boot.bin, or that the file is corrupt in any way (even after several wipe and install attempts).
My System is:
Supermicro P6DLS dual Pentium II 333MHz & 512MB RAM, w/ Adaptec 7880 SCSI-UW and IDE (whopping UltraDMA 33) interfaces.
CD/DVD reader is configured as the secondary master (moved from primary master in an attempt to fix boot problem)
HD is a 16GB UW SCSI disk.
(Other particulars ommited unless someone feels they are relevant to the boot process).
The system came to me with Windows 2000 installed and functioning. I also had Fedora Core 3 installed, both with no boot problems of the SCSI disk. (Although FC3 would not see the second processor even with the canned SMP kernel).
This system is intended to replace a Fedora Core 3 system to be a multi-purpose firewall gateway & proxy server and I'm really liking the performance I'm seeing with Solaris 10 on this system but would like it to be able to go through a normal boot process and not have to depend on a floppy as a boot device to get started.
Anyone have any ideas why the Solaris x86 boot loaders think that they cannot find boot.bin when the full /boot partion is intact?
TIA,
-Troy

I'm getting the same problem trying to install
Solaris 10 in VMware from DVD.
It brings up the Solaris Primary Boot Subsystem, so
it appears to be reading fine, but the only thing
that happens is I get the Cannot find boot.bin
error.Hmm, the "Cannot find boot.bin." message comes from the
CD/DVD's boot code, which is contained in the first 16 sectors
of the media.
The boot.bin file is supposed to be read from the Solaris UFS
slice, which starts at 512 byte block #5151360 (or 2048 byte
dvd sector #1287840). This a byte offset of ~2.6 GBytes.
Maybe an issue with your system's bios not being able to read
DVD media > 2GB, during DVD boot?
Or a problem with burning the DVD media? Maybe some
"smart" PC DVD burning software has decided only to record
the 2.6 GB ISO filesystem, and the 100 MB Solaris UFS
filesystem that follows the ISO filesystem is missing on the DVD?
Or a 2GB filesize issue while burning the DVD?
Do you have a pc / windows utility that can print some information
about the S10 DVD media, especially the size of that DVD?
Maybe your CD/DVD recording software?
The original S10 GA x86 DVD image has a size of 2732195840
bytes, or 1334080 2K DVD blocks.

• Solaris 10 x86 -Scsi Adaptec 29320ALP Card issue

Hi
I am trying to install Solaris 10 x86 edition . I am facing an issue with the scsi card adaptec 29320. Not detecting the disk at the time of installation. I checked the card in HCL. It is available. Any way to install.

I'm not sure what the root cause for the firewire driver hang is.
Maybe an issue with interrupt routing. You may want to experiment
with BIOS ACPI / IOAPIC / PnP OS settings, and/or the
acpi-user-options property.
Anyway, to get rid of the firewire driver, you can probably add an
"exclude: hci1394" line to /etc/system and reboot.

Ports on FC switch suggest thousands of "invalid transmitted word" errors per hour - and this is just the SCSI-FC robot control port!
Tried:

d) checking zoning over and over
e) entire library reboot
f) entire switch reboot
Thoughts/comments/what could be going wrong?
Thanks all.

hi,guys:
did you check you type of connecting of library?
is it point to point or fc_loop ?
so you need to change fc_loop for fc_swithc 。
best regards

• Installing Solaris 10 from a SCSI DVD driveand a Tekram DC-390U adapter

I'm tryng to install Solaris x86 from a SCSI DVD drive wth a Tekram DC-390U adapter (DVD version downloaded from the sun website).
When the computer boots from the DVD the Solaris Configuration Assistant is run and ask me to choose the device which I want to boot from. The problem is the list only contains my hard drive and a CD drive, but not the DVD drive.
I guess Solaris doesn't include any driver for that specific SCSI adapter, which I find quite surprising as any old Linux or *BSD works fine with it. And the card is also listed in the device list Solaris has found while probing the system.
I tried to download drivers from the Tekram webiste but they are limited to Solaris 8. I didn't try them 'cause it takes me so much time to get a floppy drive up and running...
PS : Installing on a VirtualPC 2004 guest works fine, but it's so slow...

I downloaded the latest version of Solaris 10, and that solved the problem of the continual reboots. Now the keyboard doesn't work, but that's a different problem.

• Scsi error during solaris 8 ia installation

Hi folks,
I try to (re-)install Intel Solaris 8 on my machine and fail getting the error message "Warning: /pci@0,0/pci9005,f@6 (cadp0): timeout: abort request, target=0, lun=0". This varies, sometimes I get "abort device", sometimes "reset bus". Then: "SCSI transport failed, reason: timeout (or reason reset)". Can anyone give me a hint what to do about that?
- I am using an Adaptec 7890 scsi controller. My dealer ensures me that it is not defective and he has successfully installed win95 on it.
- I've been successfully running Solaris 8 on this same machine for quite a while, so hardware is compatible. (Trouble started when I tried to install the recommended patch set. Anything went wrong after that, and nothing short of complete reinstallation would do.)
- I tried webstart installation and interactive installation, same result.
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!
Bernd.

After all, the hard disk did turn out to be defective inspite of
my dealers protestations. After replacing the disk everything was
fine ...
Not really everything. Something IS wrong with the recommended patch
set (Solaris 8 x86_Recommended Patch Cluster Mar/09/0)! After
installing the patch set my machine refused to boot, and I had to
install the os all over again!

• Solaris 8 don't recognize a SCSI CDROM for installation

My Intel system has a IDE hard disk and a SCSI Adaptec 1542CP. I'm trying to install Solaris 8 using a Matsushita SCSI CDROM ( scsi id=5 ). The hardware it's fine because I'm booting DOS 6.22 and Unixware 7.11 using the same system.
Solaris diskette recognizes my SCSI controller but don't recognizes my CDROM. Please could you help me ?
Sorry, English it's not my first language !!

Can you see them from the OBP with a probe-scsi-all etc....
Are they actually Sun qualified disks, have they got Sun firmware on them, what are the model numbers.
Have a search on sunsolve for the ST number if it's a Seagate etc etc and try and find some firmware to burn to them from another system.
Failing that connect to another system and run format and low level format time. The RAID cont might of burnt somekind of special headers to them, god knows....
What kind of RAID cont was it? What type of system are you using, and what system were they in?

• Is "SCSI Generic" driver available for Solaris 10?

I just wanted to know whether "SCSI Generic" driver is available for Solaris 10? And if yes then is it freely available?
weblinks for download would be very much helpful.
Thanks..

sgen is the driver that exports the uscsi api. I would presume that uscsi and sg would be similar, but annoyingly different. You can see the uscsi interface here: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5430/6mksu57l0?l=en&a=view&q=uscsi

• Solaris 10, ISALogic SCSI interface and ARCVault tape library

I put an ISALogic SCSI interface card into a SunBlade 2000, installed
Solaris 10_u4 on it and attached an ARCVault tape library. The system
see the tape but fails to see the library and the robot. The robot and the
tape are on the same scsi bus.
I followed the instructions on how to do a scsi passthrough and did a probe-scsi-all
at the ok prompt of the system.
The probe on the ISAlogic interface card sent the system into a bus error.
Any idea how I could make the robot visible on the same bus?
Lydia

A firmware update on the Blade solve the problem.
