Solaris 10 - T1000
Just managed to(fudged to say the least) jumpstart my T1000, however I would like to add some extra storage and was wondering if theres any PCI-Express USB (not supported obviously) cards that work in Solaris 10 1/13 in a T1000 as I would like to add some additional SSD storage to the box instead of adding over the network, cheers in advance!
For anyone in the future, refer to this HCL for Solaris 10 http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris10/overview/iocontrolers20-142630.html
good luck with anyone trying to buy from the UK as most of the retailers won'r or didn't ship to the UK, I finally found one on ebay

Solaris 10: T1000/2000 combination, how many using it?
Hi,
Just wanted to know
- how many of them are using T1000/2000 and Solaris 10?
-For which applications and kind of application loads?
- Don't they feel that because T1000/2000 only support Solaris 10, its a bottle-neck for them?if you very much prefer 'Apache' then you can get this done by downloading tomcat.
but, why go through the trouble, when web server 7 - which supports solaris 10 and can also run java web applications with lot more bells and whistles. if you have not , please check the what'z new features

How to disable change password in finder while connecting to a network computer?
Hi folks,
I'd like to disable the Change Password option that shows when I want to connect into a network computer:
- Both users (client and server) are already running with parental controls set to "prevent(s) the user from changing their password in the Users & Groups preference pane".
Thanks in advance.Hi,
I am also facing the same issue and I am not able to su to root user as the password is expired. and the user I am currently logged in does not have permission to change the root password. I just want to know how I can change the root password now? I am connected to my SPARC Solaris 10 T1000 server through hyperterminal.
The worst thing is that, I do not have IP to the server through which I can try ssh to the server and change the password. Please let me know the solution if you know.
Thanks in advance. -
Problem switching on resource group
I am in the process of setting up a new two node cluster. I do have Sun Cluster 3.2 installed on a pair of recently patched Solaris 10 T1000 servers.
I ran the command "scswitch -z -h mw3 -g ensemble-rg" and the command just hung it has not completed or timed out. I tried to stop the command with "scswitch -k -Q -g ensemble-rg" on the mw3 server but that also has not completed.
I tried to run "clresourcegroup online +" and "clresourcegroup offline -v +" and got the same message:
clresourcegroup: (C667636) ensemble-rg: resource group is undergoing a reconfiguration, try again later
What do I need to do to get the resource group and hosts completed?
Thank you,
Tom.Hello Tim,
At this point there is nothing in the ensemble-rg. The logical host ens-perf has it's own ip address separate from the two nodes in the cluster and there is no other machine that answers on that IP address on the network.
What can I look at to show me what might be wrong with the cluster configuration?
Here is what is in /var/adm/messages for today:
Nov 20 09:02:47 mw3 Cluster.CCR: [ID 499775 daemon.notice] resource group ensemble-rg added.
Nov 20 09:03:27 mw3 Cluster.RGM.rgmd: [ID 224900 daemon.notice] launching method <hafoip_validate> for resource <ens-perf>, resource group <ensemble-rg>, node <mw3>, timeout <300> seconds

Nov 20 09:03:28 mw3 Cluster.CCR: [ID 973933 daemon.notice] resource ens-perf added.
The scswitch command that hung was started at 09:04:51 according to ps.
I still have the scswitch and clresourcegroup commands that are still hung.
I was creating the resource group to install the application on the cluster nodes - so I don't have any application logs to check at this point because this is a brand new cluster that I am setting up to test.
Here is the output for clrg status:

Hi,
I am having a hard time getting accent characters to work in a web app that is running on solaris 10 (T1000s and M2200s). When I run the same app on an OS X server, accent characters from web forms display correctly. Are forms are using ISO-8859-1 and the solaris server reports that the character set it is using is ISO-8859-1. Accent characters (such as ) still get displayed as "?" however.
Anybody know the trick to get solaris to work with accent chars? Our locale settings are:
LANG=
LC_CTYPE=iso_8859_1
LC_NUMERIC="C"
LC_TIME="C"
LC_COLLATE="C"
LC_MONETARY="C"
LC_MESSAGES="C"
LC_ALL=Hi Jason,
Thank you for your reply.
We currently use the supplied default Collation "1252LATIN1" and the Character Set "cp1252" for Language "us_english". This Character Set has all the characters we need.
Doesn't the supplied ASA Collation '1252LATIN1' meet the requirement you have mentioned.
Also isn't this Collation recommended for Western European Languages (like English, French, German, & Spanish) as it provides the most likely match to the Character Set 'cp1252'.
Is there a specific Collation you'd want me to try during database creation.
Thanks for all your input.

Solaris 10 Sparc T2000/T1000 slow scp/sftp between hosts
We have 4 x t2000 and 2 x t1000 sun servers all running solaris 10 sparc edition and when uploading an agent to all these servers I was unable to maintain a connection faster than 6MB. All our OEL 6.3 hosts on the same vlans/network/swithes are able to copy the same files around at 85MB/s.
Our entire network is GB and have been trouble shooting along the way and have got down to two sun hosts on the same switch and vlan to rule out firewalling and other factors.
The switchports on the cisco show no errors and no errors are seen on the solaris servers and training up at the GB speed as configured.
So I'm faily certain there is something on the solaris hosts OS wise that is affecting perfomance that is causing some of our backup jobs to be quite long but I'm not sure at what to do now.
I've seen some online articles relating to tuning and adjusting certain tcp options but unsure as to what would be best.
Has anyone else experienced issues such a this and if so what was done to resolve it, thanks.Hi,
this is just a guess, but the T1000 and T2000 are really slow when doing single-thread cpu stuff. When you do scp, a single thread or process on each machine has to do all the encryption and this is most likely what is slowing you down. To analyze this further, look at the output of prstat (or top). If I am right, you will see one scp/ssh process using all cpu time of one of your cores/threads. In a T2000 with 8 cores, 32threads, this will be shown in prstat as 6.7% utilization.

Solaris 10 on T1000 : Calculations VERY SLOW
We bought a T1000 for Web server application.
We have to resize online some images using Imagemagick.
The resizing is very very slow (on an e450 - 250MHz sparc II... 1 sec, on the T1000...nearly 2 minutes!!)
Any idea for an optimization ?
Kind regards,
ChristianThank you for your reply

Jumpstart Installation Problem T1000 Solaris 10
I m installing solaris 10 using Jumpstart on T1000, every thing worked fine initially but after adding one new raw SATA HDD.
im getting this error when I boot client T1000 machine using
ok boot net - install command.
cannot open neither boot_archive nor miniroot
*Enter filename [boot_archive]:*
any idea ???
Jumpstart services NFS etc all are working good with other machines.Did you by chance rename the root pool from rpool to something else?

Solaris 10 on t1000 - write() to /dev/poll hangs on asm instrn
hi,
i've got a streaming server which uses /dev/poll and once in a while it hangs. upon debugging with dbx i found that sometimes it gets stuck inside the write() call to remove the fd from polled fd structure at the assembly instruction "ta 8" which is for a syscall, correct? and, sometimes it gets stuck inside sosendmsg() at "ta 8" too.
this bug seems to reproduce intermittently only when the server is configured with 33 (the cpu has 32 coolthreads) worker pthreads each of which can add/remove fds from the poll device. each thread opens the /dev/poll seperately, so they have different fds to write to /dev/poll.
the problem happens after all of the threads have started up, so it does not appear to be an issue with thread spawning. if the server is configured for lesser threads this behavior doesn't happen. i haven't increased the stress level on the server to say for certain that that is the case, but under the same load it doesn't happen.
(1) the _write() call hang happens in the single thread that is responsible for handling all the incoming connections.
(2) the sosendmsg() hang happens in any one of the 32 threads which handle all out-going data (streaming).
hardware: t1000 with 8 cores (8G ram)
compiler:s SUN C/C++ 5.8 2005/10/13
application: helix server
questions:
(0) there is no need to lock the poll device even though mulltiple threads are writing to /dev/poll thru different fds, right?
(1) is this a known bug?
(2) how can i use dtrace (or any other tool) to probe beyond the syscall trap when the server hangs?
here is the stack of the last frame in dbx for _write:
0xff2412a4: _write : st %o0, [%sp + 68]
0xff2412a8: _write+0x0004: mov 4, %g1
=> 0xff2412ac: _write+0x0008: ta 8

0xff2412c4: _write+0x0020: retl

0xff240478: sosendmsg+0x0020: retl

any help is appreciated.
sincerely,
-atinhi,
To look and see what the applications threads are doing once the application hangs
as root run
# mdb -k
you should get a ">" prompt.
then you could run..
$<threadlist and look for your application process name amongst all the stack traces.
or ::ps -t and find your process, that will list a load of kernel threads for your app.
then you can do "threadpointer"::findstack for each of your threads eg
here is ::ps output for vold
R 342 1 342 342 0 0x4a014000 000006000987dbc0 vold
T 0x300019c4cc0 <TS_SLEEP>
T 0x300018ea380 <TS_SLEEP>
T 0x300019dd960 <TS_SLEEP>
T 0x30001152380 <TS_SLEEP>
it has the 4 sleeping threads. lets see where they are stopped.
0x300019c4cc0::findstackstack pointer for thread 300019c4cc0: 2a10116d061
[ 000002a10116d061 cv_wait_sig_swap_core+0x11c() ]
000002a10116d111 poll_common+0x4e8()
000002a10116d201 pollsys+0xd8()
000002a10116d2e1 syscall_trap32+0xcc()
and so on for all four threads.
that should give us an idea as to where in the devpoll code your thread is stopped
but.. lets look at devpoll.c especially at where could dpwrite() block
ah there is a comment saying that we wait for any other writers via dpwrite or any
readers in dpioctl(), it keeps a reference count per fd that is opened into /dev/poll
Is it possible that you have a thread in a longterm poll on the same fd as the blocking write, it looks like the write will block till the poll completes, pstack should give you the
fd for each write/ioctl as the first argument.

How to configure an X86 Solaris 10 laptop as Jumpstarter for SPARC T1000?
I believe that I have taken due diligence WRT using search and Google to research the topic. There is a little voice that says "hopefully you haven't and the answer is right there in front of you".
That being said, I did find an article for [configuring an X86 box to jumpstart another X86 box|http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/articles/jumpstart_x86_x64.jsp]. As many of you well know the T1000 is lacking a keyboard and monitor port so I'm forced to jumpstart the server. I received conflicting information whether I can jumpstart a T1000 (SPARC) box with an X86. My intuition says that this can be done, but may need modifications to the process in the hyperlink.
Before trekking forward, {color:#0000ff}+I'd like to hear from you if you have jumpstarted a SPARC box with an X86 box.+{color} Ideally there would be a [link to a wiki, (much like this broken link I found on Google).|http://www.ignorantinc.com/www/ignorantwiki/index.php/Solaris_Wiki:Procedures/jumpstart] *+{color:#0000ff}Any procedures or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated{color}+*. Thank you for taking the time to this posting.There should not be a reason it doesn't work the support is there for both sparc and x86 support.
What steps have you taken and what part is not working ?
The basic high level steps for a network boot are just
to create the image
cd /os_image/Solaris_xx/Tools
./setup_install_server /somepath
set the client up
cd /somepath/Solaris_xx/Tools
./add_install_client client sun4v
on the client
ok boot netAnyway just need some more details around where you are seeing the problem, what you have done etc. -
Unattended Solaris 10 installation with jumpstart server issue
Hello,
I have setup a jumpstart server and am finding it difficult to get a fully unattended solaris 10 sparc 10/09 install on a t1000 client. The console connection to the client goes into interactive mode at the point in system identification when the installer asks if the system is networked or non-networked, and runs a setup of default time zone and date/time. Using esc-2 to advance through the interactive menu it asks if ithe system is on a subnet, for the netmask (which is there as default), asks if the current time is correct, then asks me to confirm that my selections are correct. When I confirm it goes on it's merry way to finish the installation unattended.
My guess is it does not like one of the values in the sysidcfg file being used, but can't seem to see where the problem is. I don't see anything in the table of sysidcfg keywords from the online docs that specify networked or not, and I am using the network_interface keyword to define hostname, ip, default router, netmask and ipv6, and thought that should take care of the networking portion of system identification, also have timezone and time server set.
Could it be that I am configuring an ethernet port that is not connected (bge0)? This computer will be deployed on a DMZ type network, and the jumpstart server is located on a different network our internal private network. The jumpstart installation via the server is done by using a temporary ethernet connection on a second interface of the client. One other note the defined time server is on the dmz so the installation program won't see it.
Any suggestions on what might be causing the interactive installer to kick in?
Here is the sysidcfg used for the client:

Thanks,

Edited by: jmck407 on Aug 6, 2010 11:42 AMupdate. Fixed the problem with date/time by using abrante's suggestion of setting the time server to localhost. Don't get prompted for date/time information in the interactive installer any more.
If I setup the sysidcfg file to configure the ethernet port being used to communicate with the jumpstart server (bge1), using an ip and netmask that is on the jumpstart server network, the installation goes through fully un-attended.
Is there any way to get a second interface (in this case bge0) configured with ip/netmask values that are not part of the jumpstart server's network, using a non interactive jumpstart installation? Using these values in sysidcfg, the only things prompted for during the installation are, Is the system on a subnet, and what is the netmask. Anyone know what the sysidcfg part of the installation does to check the validity of a netmask value given in the sysidcfg file on the jumpstart server?
If need be, I guess the interface could be configured in the finish script.

Greetings all...I'm not sure where this is supposed to go so I figured I'll start here since I technically am new to java, hehe... New meaning new to the Solaris installation of Java, specifically in regards to downgrading the JDK/JRE from 1.5.0 (latest as of the 6/06 release of Solaris 10) to 1.4.2_12.
More detail:
We have four T1000s and four T2000s, all with Solaris 10 6/06 installed. Apparently, the latest 1.5.0 release of java is installed and used by default (java -fullversion shows 1.5.0_06-b05). JRE 1.4.2_11 is also installed but since then, 1.4.2_12 has come out and the developers that are going to be on this machine absolutely demand 1.4.2_12.
For those familiar with Solaris and pkgadd/pkginfo/pkgrm, I'm looking to A: remove 1.4.2_11 and 1.5.0_06 and B: put in 1.4.2_12. I've done both the self-extracting .sh script as well as the packages but when I run that version of java, it comes back with the following error:
Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object
I've looked everywhere I can think of to fix this but I'm at a loss now. Anyone have any ideas? Not sure what PATH variable I'm supposed to have. Thanks in advance!Greetings all...I'm not sure where this is supposed
