Solaris 10 won't allow installing on a second disk (x86 PC)

I added a second hard disk to a generic AMD64 HP PC
with the intention of installing Solaris 10 on it.
When I reach the Add Disk in the partition screen,
Solaris 10 stubbornly lists only the first disk.
Both disks are nearly identical Seagate SATA drives.
I tried tricks such as trying to remap the disks "map (hd0) (hd1)"
(grub from DVD), changing BIOS to set drive #2 as highest-priorty boot
disk.
Is there a way to specify which disk to install on
to "install-solaris" program, or via grub to the Solaris kernel?
Or tell Solaris to switch the disk LUNs?
Swapping the cables on the SATA disks
or repartitioning the first disk isn't an option for me.

My workaround is using REMOVABLE HARD DRIVES. This is what I do before commiting to a new OS. I'll try it first on a removable drive.
To do this properly you will need at least 2 removable drive bay adapters (only $10-$20 each) , one for your current hard drive and another to be inserted with the HD formatted with Solaris. Both drives need to have their jumpers in the MASTER position (as they won't be both boot devices in the system at the same time)
Then format and play with any OS you want on the spare HD. If it works the way you like then you can leave it in.
I have a sytem here which I routinely change from WinXP to Linux on a regular basis. I'm hoping to replace all of my Linux with Solaris stuff, but I'll do that only after I get my DSL running with RP-PPPOE on the Java Desktop. Right now I'm just trying things out.
I hope that this workaround helps you.

  • Security won't allow install of third party apps

I wanted to intall Symantec's Norton Antivirus defs and I am not allowed by the system to install unknown apps.  When I went to System Preferences/Security & Privacy, to allow all apps to install, after unlocking it, I was unable to change the Preference to allow  applications from anywhere.  First of all, why isn't Symantec considered an "identified" developer?  And secondly, why won't System Preferences allow me to change the "allow apps downloaded from" preference from "mac app store and identified developers" to "anywhere"?  I'm also unable to open the advanced tab on the bottom right or make any changes to what is already set on that panel (including "change password".  Is this a bug in Mavericks?  What gives?

Do not install Norton anti virus software on your Mac. It will cause you no end of problems.

  • Admin permission won't allow install

I recently started having problems printing, and in attempting to solve that problem I attempted to re-install the printer driver. After entering my administrator password, I was greeted with a dialogue box telling me that administrator level permission or higher was required to perform this operation. I am the administrator and my login/password appear to work for all other functions including creating a new user with admin permissions and enabling root user. Both of these actions failed to solve the problem - I continue to get the same message.
I have also run the disk utility to repair both disk permissions and repair disk. Neither of these operations appeared to find any problems or solve the problem. I have attempted to install two other pieces of software - I can't install these either.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I was able to activate the root user and install the printer driver. This certainly should not be necessary. I hope you de-activated root after this.
I still cannot load any softwareWhat exactly do you mean by this? That you can't install programs or that you can't launch (i.e. 'run') them?
It seems to me you have two options. The quickest would be to Archive & Install, see Mac OS X : About the Archive and Install Feature. Or you could continue to try and track down the problem, with no guarantee of success. I am happy to help you with that, but must leave the decision to you.

  • Reformated computer won't allow me to use backup disks

Hi. I had to reformat my computer but before I did so, I backed up all my music. Now, I've reinstalled iTunes but I have two problems. 1. I can't figure out if there's a way to put the CD in and copy the files over automatically. 2. When I copy the music manually and try to open it in iTunes, it says that the action isn't authorized because it's registered to my old computer. It then asks me to log into the iTues store with my old information but the store just says that I need to update iTunes, which I've already done. And I can't get past it to have the music reauthorized.

File -> Import and select the CD.

  • Install windows on second drive

    Hi;
I have a 2007 MBP, 15" (MacbookPro3,1 A1226) running Mavericks with a second HDD installed in place of the SuperDrive.
I can install Windows 7 via Bootcamp, but only on the first drive. Is there any way I can install to the second disk?
    Thanks!

I suppose I could swap them for the duration, but I think I'll try using the 2nd drive as a Windows install under VirtualBox first.
    Thanks!

  • I bought a second hand MacBook Air and it won't allow me to install updates as up pops the previous owners log in details. How do I go about amending this?

I bought a second hand MacBook Air and it won't allow me to install updates as up pops the previous owners log in details. How do I go about amending this?

The seller was remiss in not properly preparing the Mac for sale. That task has now fallen to you. You will encounter continual problems until you perform the following. Ignore references to DVD since the MacBook Air has none.
If you are unable to do that contact the seller and request instructions, or arrange for its return and a refund of your costs.
Refer to What to do before selling or giving away your Mac
If you enabled FileVault, disable it in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
"Deauthorize" your iTunes account. Same for Audible if you have one.
System Preferences > iCloud > de-select "Back to My Mac" and "Find my Mac".
Sign out of iCloud. Select "Delete from Mac" when it appears.
Next: Remove all your personal information by completely erasing the Mac's internal storage.
If your Mac shipped with a grey System Install DVD, start your Mac with that disc inserted in the optical drive while holding the c key to boot from it instead of its internal volume, which should be erased before selling it.
If your Mac did not ship with discs, boot OS X Internet Recovery:
using three fingers press and hold the following keys: ⌘(command), option, and R.
With a fourth finger press the power button to turn on the Mac.
Keep the other three fingers where they are until you see the "spinning globe" icon.
This method forces the Mac to download its originally installed OS from Apple's servers, which will not require an Apple ID to install.
Remove any Open Firmware password if you created one: select Firmware Password Utility from the Utilities menu and remove it.
Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Remove any partitions you may have created.
Select the Mac's hard disk icon, then select the "Erase" tab.
Select the "Security Options" button and erase the disk.
The more "securely" you erase the disk, the longer it will take.
The fastest method is sufficient since all but the most expensive techniques and equipment will be able to recover securely erased data.
When it finishes, quit Disk Utility.
Select Install Mac OS X from the Utilities menu.
An Apple ID will not be required. If a prompt for an Apple ID appears, return to Step 5.
Do not create any user accounts.
When it finishes, shut down the computer.
If you want to install the bundled apps that were included with your Mac, restart by using your Applications DVD if one was included, and install the bundled apps. Apps bundled with newer Macs that shipped without discs cannot be transferred. Its new owner must purchase them from the Mac App Store using his or her own Apple ID.
If the Mac is being sold to someone outside the family consider the following additional information:
System Install DVDs that came with your Mac should remain with it forever, and must be included with the sale.
Consider including your AppleCare certificate if you bought it, printed documentation, even the box if you still have it. AppleCare stays with the equipment and is transferable.
Execute a bill of sale showing the Mac's serial number.
Once no longer in your possession, remove the Mac from your devices in My Support Profile.

  • I am trying to backup my Itunes onto my external hard drive. I am at the step where I on Itunes, click on File - Library - Organize library. I am suppose to check mark both boxes there, It won't allow me to check mark the second box, why? How to fix this.

I am trying to backup my Itunes onto my external hard drive. I am at the step where I on Itunes, click on File ->Library ->Organize library. I am suppose to check mark both boxes there, the first being "Consolidate Files" & the second being "Reorganize files in the folder 'Itunes Media'. I am able to checkmark the first box but It won't allow me to check mark the second box, why? How can i fix this? Please help!

Well you must have made a mistake somewhere. The last instruction of step four reads:
When you've found your iTunes library folder, drag that folder to your external hard drive. This will begin the iTunes backup. The amount of time the backup will take depends on the size of your library. When the transfer is done, your backup is complete and your external hard drive can be disconnected.
Normally dragging content from to a new location on a different drive will result in a copy action which is what you were supposed to do. At a guess you somehow managed to move the iTunes folder. Then when you started iTunes it created a new blank library for you assuming it had just been installed rather that raising a warning.
Close iTunes. Rename the iTunes folder on the internal drive as iTunes (Empty) then copy the iTunes folder from the external back into the User's Music folder. Start iTunes. All should be well.
When you've made sure it all works please read my User Tip and use that method to backup in future. Since you already have a folder with the backup in place you can skip the "Make New" operation in the fourth step and simply choose the external folder.

My settings icon says I need an update but it won't allow me to install it.

Have you tried restarting the iPad or resetting it and then try to update?
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This should not matter - but at this point you might as well try this as well. Close all apps, restart the iPad and then try to update again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button. Restart the iPad.

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

  • Trying to reset administrator password by using the Mac OS X Install disc to reset but it won't allow me to without original administrator password. Frustrating.

Trying to reset administrator name/password by using the Mac OS X Install disc to reset but it won't allow me to without original administrator name/password. Frustrating. Reason I'm trying to reset is that it seems to be not recognising the administrator name as have changed password in System Preferences - Accounts.
    PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Here's the instructions if you have the discs.
*Mac OS X: Changing or resetting an account password*

    Changing your administrator password
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh655.html
Here's one method to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2003/06/16.1.shtml
Without the discs, try this (OS 10.5 only). *How to Reset User Password via single user mode*
    http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/300019-howto-reset-user-password-via-single- user-mode.html
Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!

My ipad is saying I have app updates to install, but won't allow me to update. The update screen is blank. Any ideas on how to fix?

There are a number of other threads from people reporting a problem with a blank Updates tab in the App Store app - it looks like there is a problem at Apple's end which they need to fix.
Some posts are suggesting that you if you go into the Purchased tab in the App Store app you might be able to update the apps from there, though you will need to scroll through the list to find those with updates and individually update them.
