I installed Solaris 10 on my x86 machine once. Worked fine, but it wouldnt apply any changes i made. Then, whenever i told it to shutdown, it just logged me off. I installed it again and it wouldnt let me login as root for first time, i double checked password when i set it. Then, i got into a nostalgia mood and installed Solaris 9 on exact same machine, hard drive etc etc. Same fault. Whats happening? Is a good spec machine according 2 HCL (is custom built)

  • Solaris never booted to gui login screen

I have made a new installation of solaris 10 on HP xw8600 workstation. After selecting from grub the top most choice which normally yields a gui login screen, the pc is restarted.
Some say it is due to mainboard thermal issues where solaris shuts down/restarts for safety (physically I don't think there is any thermal problem).
Is/are there any switch or parameters for some safe mode (not the command line, but the gui).
Or what may be the problem?
    Thanks,

Ok, I have managed to solve my problem myself:
    first go through this thread:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5224214
then I applied these patches and off it goes now I have a 64 bit running Solaris10
First: Patch no: 125370-06, fault manager
Second: Patch no: 127112-08, kernel patch
(I dont know where the links are I followed the update manager in solaris)
    good luck,

  • When I boot up it hangs on the login screen for awhile, why?

I have a mid 2011 Macbook Air 13".  It came with Lion but I recently updated to Mountain Lion.  When I wake the laptop from sleep everything is fine.  If it's been awhile since it slept (a couple of hours), the login screen hangs.  What happens is that it boots like normal and looks like everything is correct, but it won't let me type in my password.  After 10 seconds or so I can see a cursor come up but it won't let me type (but anything I do type at this point will later fill in the field after another 2-3 seconds or so).  One other thing that's weird is that when the screen first comes up it shows the battery percentage from when I put it back on the charger, then after everything catches up, it changes to show 100%.
I hope I explained the problem well enough.  Basicly a "wake from sleep" is fine if it hasn't been long since the laptop slept, but if it's been awhile it takes about 15-20 seconds to boot up.
    Ideas?

Here are some suggestions based on my recent issue with unable to get Mavericks up after upgrade - The Apple geniuses just simply couldnt figure this one out...despite it being in their shop for 3 days (They probably did not look at it...and asked if they can just wipe out everything and install fresh...i had said NO):
Restart computer and hold Cmd+V when you hear chime. This will start the computer in Verbose mode.
See the messages and see where the system boot fails. In my case, it was some backtrace IOStorageFamily issue with com.paragon-software.
Google may be able to solve your Apple issues - just type the error message in and see if you get any useful suggestions. in most cases - this would be some faulty 3rd party drivers.....
In my case, it was something stupid i had probably installed....I had to boot to safe mode (Hold Shift at boot chime) - open Terminal, delete the folder com.paragon-software.kext from System/Library/Extensions....that fixed the problem. Mavericks is working great now....
Let me know if your debugging thing works...

  • Switching graphics mode (9600m gt) - OSX hangs at subsequent login screen

Haven't been able to find anything on this. When I switch the graphics mode through the Energy Saver Preferences (whether from battery life to performance or vice versa), it takes me back to the login screen as it should, but the computer hangs there, sometimes for upwards of five minutes.
The cursor in the password field blinks but it takes no input. Plugging in an external keyboard makes no difference. The mouse pointer can be moved but clicking has no effect. After a few minutes, any inputs you've attempted to make rush back in at once and it works as usual.
I'm not sure when this started, but it's been happening since at least 10.6.5.

    Hi there,
I am new to Mac and got my MBP i7 2.0GHz, 8GB, SSD, OSX Lion 10.7.2 last month. Have you guys got any solution for the slow rendering of Youtube video? On my new MBP it can only run at resolution: 240p.
The same video on Youtube at HD resolution runs perfectly on my old HP Core Duo laptop. Slightly dissapointed with Mac here. Tried to look around for solution via Google but no luck.
It seems like no one from Apple support provides any solution for this problem. Are there any support at all from Apple???

  • Macmini lion hangs on grey login screen

After installing Lion my MacMini hangs every time I startup on the grey Login Screen. The 3 user Accounts can not be clicked on... Holding down the power button until the macmini is off and then pressing again once to start up a second time helps. Then it works like a charm. Has anybody a solution to this ? When is Apple coming with the first patch ? Such bugs are really windowish... brrr "Dislike"!   The same bug is worked around on Laptops with disabling some Energy Saving Options (automatic graphics ***) - but that's nothing for my MacMini, isen't it? Thanks for any help.

It works fine about every third time or so... but usally not. After Install of Lion 10.7.1   (I had some hope...)  nothing new... Every time I start the system I get the grey screen with the apple logo. Clicking the user accounts want do anything - shows no place to enter the PW. Then I force shutdown and all works fine again. • U410 hangs at login screen with no password box or username box

So I received some virus quarantines yesterday and removed then but then when through my program files and researched/removed suspicious folders mostly. Went to restart my computer and it now hangs at the login screen with just the Windows login screen background. On startup it runs a memory check and then asks if I want to start in safe mode. Both modes hang at the login screen. So I downloaded the recovery disk because I didn't do the one click backup. I connect my external drive and change the boot order, then restart and it doesn't take me to my external blu ray drive to boot my CD from. Any suggestions here? Highly appreciated.... I am not under warranty.

  • MBA hangs on login screen after mountain lion upgrade

I have a mid 2011 macbook air. Ever since I did the upgrade to mountain lion last week, I have had about 10 instances where it hangs on the login screen. I bring it up from sleep, I see the login but when I enter my password and hit enter, it just hangs with the login box grayed. I can hit the cancel button and it gives me the ability to interact with the login box again, but will not log in. on all but one of these instances I have had to restart the machine. I have timed it to 5 minutes twice before restarting the machine to get back in. This never happened with lion. Anyone else have this issue?

    I have issues also.
With a samba share on Linux, ML can see it correctly, but on my Windows Home Server 2011, if i do smb://"server address" i receive and error saying that the share dows not exist on server. Before on Lion i had a list of my shares. On finder the Server apears with a "/" which i can not open.
If i do smb://"server address/share" is works correctly, but i would like to have tha before behaviour. Besides this the only issue that i found after upgrading is the WHS 2011 Lauchpad could not sign in (before in Lion was working).
Any ideas on how to solve this?

    Hi Shamila,
If you have the SAP Logon GUI try to open that in text editor and Save as like gui.sap and place this in your projet mimes folder

  • Solaris 10 on HP Proliant DL160 resizing xdm login screen

I have installed the Solaris 10 X86 on an HP Proliant DL160, and the login screen appears very Large. Is there a way to make the login screen smaller? Using xdm as the window manager.

    Hi Asgorath,
Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you but I
am experiencing the identical problem on a HP
Proliant BL25p Blade Server. Here is my hardware
    config:
CPU - Dual Opteron 2.6 Single Core
    Memory - 16gb
Controller - HP Smart Array 6i
    Logical drives - 1 (2x72gb RAID1+0)
I have tried the same things as you and I still get
intermittant boots. Power on and off does not always
work as the system still hangs. It's totally hit or
miss. Once it soes boot it seems to work fine. I have
also installed the latest Solaris 10 for x86 Patch
Cluster in hopes that some of the kernal patches
would fix the problem. So far no luck as the system
continues to hang...HARD!! HP was out to my site
today and the Eng. is going back to the group that
qualified Solaris10 on the HP Blades and see if they
have any input. If I receive anything back I will
post it here. I know this post is late and if you
have resolved please post your fix.Hi doc42755,
I have not come up with a solution as of yet, if I do come up with a solution i will most certainly post it here.
However, if you find the solution could you let us know in this thread aswell.
    Thanks

  • Telnet from Windows PC is very slow to Solaris x86, after Net linked

(Sorry about the re-post. I posted in the wrong group earlier)
I got the following info from this forum, in regards to configuring my Solaris x86 to link to the Net:
    # echo 192.168.0.1 > /etc/defaultrouter
    # route add default 192.168.0.1
    # echo nameserver 192.168.0.1 >> /etc/resolv.conf
    # cp /etc/nsswitch.dns /etc/nsswitch.conf
So I did the above steps, reboot the Solaris, and my Solaris system can link to the Net fine afterwards. But ever since it had Net access, another problem is created.
Whenever I telnet using a command line from a Windows XP computer, it takes a long time to telnet to this Solaris system. Before, I would see the Solaris login prompt for telnet in a few seconds. Now, it's about 1 minute. Plus, if I try to use an xterminal software from that PC to link to the Solaris x86, it hangs.
So after I undo all the 4 commands above, reboot the Solaris computer, all these problems disappear. I can telnet from my Windows PC to this Solaris system very quickly. However, I no longer have Internet access from my Solaris.
Anyone knows how I can fix this problem? Thanks.

It sounds like a name resolution issue. Can you post the contents of your /etc/nsswitch.conf file for us?

  • Solaris x86 on HP pavilion laptop

I am trying to install solaris x86 version on my pavilion zt1000. The solaris install cd boots and then crashes with the following "boot panic: trap type 0 error 0 at 13bd7f" and bunch of register information.
I have tried 3 different CDs and even tried creating a bootable floppy disk. The floppy disk booting just hangs at the solaris boot manager screen.
    Any ideas ???
To start with can solaris be installed on a HP pavilion
Thanks for any info anybody can provide.
    Sriram

I do remember that everyone who installed on a laptop had to use an external keyboard during the installation. While I dont have any info specific to the HP, search the forum for past laptop posts - someone has probably had a similar issue and take a look at these pages.

  • Solaris 10 dual boot hangs on

I have a hp pavillion 6000 which I am trying to dual boot with solaris 10 x86. I partitioned my hard drive using systemresourcecd and formated with linux swap. when I try to boot off of my solaris 10 dvd, it hangs. It comes up wiht the copyright information, and doesnt change. help!

    Hi
It is very easy to install Solaris with Windows XP dual boot if you have correct concepts of Operating System.Whch verison of Solaris are u trying to install. if you are installing Solaris 10 1/06 then there is a grub boot loader which comes with Soalris 10 .also u will first get the selection screen during first boot. if u r directly booting into windows then go to command prompt of windows adn type fdisk. then make the partition of solaris as active and then boot , now u will be able to boot with soalris/windows.

  • Solaris x86 on a mac, blank screen after miniroot but NOT when console=ttya

I am trying to install Solaris 10 x86 update7 on a Mac Mini.
It hangs with a blank screen right after loading the miniroot, before the "Configuring devices..." part.
I can't even see the miniroot loading completion (the hex addresses displayed when miniroot is loaded)... it
clears the screen and just hangs there.
    But...
By trials and errors I discovered that if I use the ttya or ttyb console setting when booting, it does NOT hang!
It proceeds further, and prompts for type of installation and then for language. Unfortunately, since Mac Mini does not
have any serial port, I can't proceed with the installation since if I use console=ttya I can't use the keyboard anymore.
I ran the sun tool to check for hardware compliancy and it passed.
I think there must be something odd with the graphic card probe, what else could change when I boot with "console=ttya"
beside that? Is there a way to bypass the check for the graphic card when booting? I don't want to use it, either... I would
use the mac mini as a server, I wish I could remove the graphic card but it's embedded in the motherboard :-)
I do not have boot camp installed on this Mac. Could that make any difference?
I also tried to fire up opensolaris and that one works without problems, but I want Solaris 10 not opensolaris...
    Any hint is greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks in advance...
    Rick

    Hi Rick,
Like you, I have been trying to install Solaris10u7 on my 13" white Macbook. I got the same errors. Solaris10u6 used to work on this same machine, except for the lack of audio driver support.
I tried to connect a USB keyboard, but the same problem persist. Adding "console=text" or "console=keyboard" to the GRUB startup parameters did not help. But it does look like a console detection problem. Hopefully, there is a workaround. I'll check this forum post again to see if anyone comes up with a workable solution. I also prefer to have Solaris proper, not Opensolaris.
_After-thought_: Perhaps I'll just follow the developments on SXCE until 'Solaris 11' is released next year (hopefully sooner than expected). Older versions of SXCE did work well on the Macbook, though not the recent ones.

  • Install Java on solaris x86

Hello - I am connected to one Solaris x86 machine remotely. It does not have GUI in it and only command line execution. I would like to install Java on this machine. Can you please provide me the link where I can get java and instructions to install it - I surfed in previous topics - But no result found
    Thank you!

    Java is built-in.
Or you can download a new version from java.sun.com on a different machine and then sftp it over to the Solaris box.
