Solaris 10 X86 no internet connexion
Hi,
Just after installation, Mozilla 1.7 cannot access internet :
The interface e1000g0 works (ping, scp, ssh in both directions)
Is it a configuration problem ? Help should be appreciated.

Thank you for information about /etc/defaultdomain
nslookup and dig resolve adresses :
# nslookup arp
Server: xxx.xxx.10.1
Address: xxx.xxx.10.1#53
Name: arp.[my.domain]
Address: xxx.xxx.49.39
but I didn't change the default /etc/nsswitch.conf
and that was the problem.
I copied nsswitch.dns in nsswitch.conf
and it works now.
Thank you a lot Darren, for your help

How to setup internet connection in Solaris 10 X86

I have installed Solaris 10 X86 in my intel laptop. I want to setup internet connection in solaris. You need to determine whether your NIC is even supported.
(but you kept that particular information a secret in your forum post)
If the Ethernet chipset is supported, you then need to install the drivers.
By the way, very few wireless networking chipsets are supported. -
Solaris 10 x86: connecting to the internet using a modem
I have just finished installing Solaris on my PC, and would want to study Java development with it. However, I can't seem to find out how to get my modem to connect to the internet. Is there any dialup utility that I can use?
Forgive the REALLLLY newbie question. I just want to get up and running with my new Solaris 10 on the internet.Oh my. Got answers through Google:

Hope this helps those who are in the same predicament as I did. -
Solaris 10 x86 & 2 x NIC. Can some1 pls have a look if i do all correctly?
i have a server with two NICs and Solaris 10 x86 installed.
i want to use NIC1 with ADSL router (10.0.0.x) and NIC2 with switch (192.168.16.x). i also want to setup a DHCP server for LAN machines (NIC2) and DNS server.
can someone pls confirm/correct my thoughts/steps in configuring two interfaces?
1. during install i had to chose a default route for both interfaces. for NIC1 it was easy - i just entered the ADSL router IP which was 10.0.0.1.
however, i have a difficulty with NIC2. what default route if at all should i use here?
2. my understanding is that after configuring two interfaces they should act as a bridge so that i could setup a DNS server using my LAN machine addresses (192.168.16.x) and traffic coming from outside the office will be converted properly to reach LAN machines (mail, web servers, etc). is that correct or will i need to setup and configure 2 DNS servers for each NIC respectively?
3. DHCP server. any guidance here in terms of two NICs machine?
many thanks

however, i have a difficulty with NIC2. what default
route if at all should i use here? You don't choose a default route for an interface, you choose a default route for a system. It isn't very useful to have multiple default routes for one machine. You will presumably want your default route to point to the internet-facing router.
2. my understanding is that after configuring two
interfaces they should act as a bridgeNo. You can use 'routeadm' on recent releases to configure routing. Otherwise, you need correct routing tables and make sure IP forwarding is enabled.
so that i
could setup a DNS server using my LAN machine
addresses (192.168.16.x) and traffic coming from
outside the office will be converted properly to
reach LAN machines (mail, web servers, etc). is that
correct or will i need to setup and configure 2 DNS
servers for each NIC respectively?Unless your ADSL router understands the routes behind the solaris machine (it almost certainly doesn't), it will never send traffic there. Instead, you would have to run a NAT setup on the machine. ipfilter/ipnat can be used to do that.
3. DHCP server. any guidance here in terms of two
NICs machine?Should be no issues. Just create a scope for the 192.x subnet. If you're using the Solaris DHCP server, you can create a file which prevents it from listening on the other interface, but that's not required.

DNS and Static IP Address Question on Solaris v10 X86
Ive recently installed Solaris v10 X86 and have two questions. The system is a Dell E521 with 4GB RAM and 1GB SysKonnect NIC, and internet is provided via a cable modem, thats plugged into a Netgear router, and the Solaris 10 box is plugged into the Netgear router via a CAT5 ethernet cable.
1. I can connect to my router login page using the following URL:
http://192.168.1.1/start.htm and I can also connect to various web pages such as yahoo, if I first "ping yahoo.com" (on another machine thats internet enabled) and then plug the web sites ip address into the Solaris/Mozilla browser. So it appears that I havent been successful at pointing the Solaris x86 at a DNS server to resolve the DNS name.
2. I've purchased a commercially available software package and it requires a static ip address for this Solaris x86 server. If the ip address changes, itll stop working by design and require that I reacquire the license file. When connecting through this Netgear router, how do I lock this Solaris v10 x86 server into a specific ip address? (the ip address floats presently when cycling my PCs on/off) presently, and assume the Solaris box will too, usually through an ip range of 192.168.1.<1 through 5>

The NIC is a SysKonnect 9821 1GB Ethernet card. The drivers in Solaris 10 were apparently very old and didn't install drivers or configure/plumb when I installed Solaris 10, so I downloaded the
latest drivers (hard to find!), followed the instructions and got the NIC drivers installed and then plumbed.
My router's ip address appears to be 192.168.1.1 and in one of the articles I've read, there is a recommendation to create a file (touch) within /etc named defaultrouter and enter the router's ip address. I did this, and the file now contains:
192.168.1.1
I also read where another file called resolv.conf needed to be pointed to a DNS server, which in this case, according to my Netgear router, and according to ipconfig/all on another WinBox on the same network, also shows the same 192.168.1.1 address for the DNS, so I created that file too (wasn't there) and it contains:
nameserver 192.168.1.1
There is a host name file called hostname.skge0 and it contains one line:
INTHOST
There is a hosts file, and it contains:
127.0.0.1 localhost loghost homex86
192.168.1.3 INTHOST
There is a netmasks file, and other than the commented out lines, it appears to contain one relevant line:
192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
There is a nsswitch.conf file and other than the commented out lines, it contains:

There is an nsswitch.dns file:

ethers: files
netmasks: files
bootparams: files
publickey: files

Finally, I've also seen some advice using the folling command (and I tried it):
"route add default 192.168.1.1" as an alternative method of setting up route table
The only other command I've tried is:
"ifconfig skge0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up" but I suspect that was redundant as the plumb command I used to get the NIC functioning earlier probably already provided what was needed.
Finally, on this small network, I ran an ipconfig/all on a Windows based PC, to see what network settings were reported through the wireless connection, and this is an excerpt of that information:

Otherwise you can edit /etc/hostname.<interface> and place a static address there, forgoing DHCP services from the router. You may want the address to appear outside the router's DHCP range.

Solaris 8 x86: Problems with VNC
I have installed Solaris 8 x86 on my "slave PC" and now I want to access it remotely from my "master PC". The networking runs well so far. Ping, telnet, and internet access are all possible.
Now I have installed the tightVNC 1.2.9 package on the Solaris 8 system. When I start the vncserver, the following error message appears:
"Couldn't start Xvnc; trying default font path.
Please set correct fontPath in the vncserver script."
When I try to connect with the vncviewer from my master PC, the screen is started but remains all grey.
In the vncserver script, the originally set fontPath did not work. I replaced it by some paths which are obviously recognized but with the same result.
Any help is appreciated very much.
Thank you in advance!
ThomasI commented all the set fontPath commands in the vncserver script, and now it works properly as desired. Indeed, it seems like no adjustments for font paths are needed.
The blocking point was, that in the script ~/.vnc/xstartup, the command line "startkde" has to be inserted instead of "kde" which is used in Linux systems for that case.
Thank you!

Solaris 10 x86 06/06 GRUB hangs
Dear forum,
I need help regarding Solaris 10 x86 06/06 OS GRUB hangs.
I had installed Solaris 10 06/06 OS in my SFX4200 server. After installation, i has installed Solaris 10 Recommended patches and rebooted the system. My next tast is to mirror the OS which i did successfully with the guide from SunSolve document id:83605. After the mirroring process i rebooted the system and its booted up successfully.
Then, i register my Solaris 10 OS using the Sun Update Connection Manager. Next, i click the "Check For Updates" button and i saw a message says analyzing system. Suddenly, my office internet having problem( intermittent ) for 2 hours. Again, i checked Sun Update Connection and its around 50% for 2 hours plus.
So, i decided to reboot the system. While rebooting the system hangs at "GRUB" word. I tried pressing enter, control c n control d but nothing prompt me and the system cannot boot the OS.
Please help me to troubleshoot the problem and guide me.
Thanks in advance.Hi Eldar,
Thanks for your reply.
I have done with your instruction by booting cdrom and ran the "installgrub" command. I rebooted my server.
After reboot, i saw grub> word and now i can type command.
Here are the steps:
grub> root
(hd0,0,a): Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x0
grub> setup (hd0)
checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
checking if "/boot/grub/ufs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+15 p (hd0,0,a)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menu.1st"... failed
Error 6: Mismatched or corrupt version of stage1/stage2
grub>
How can i recover from the above mentioned problem ?
Note: My hard disk was mirrored before disaster happened.
Question:
1. Last time, after i installed OS and mirrored OS, whenever i reboot my server i can see GUI window asking me to choose which to boot but now, i only can see black background and grub>. How can i recover the GRUB GUI, so that whenever system boots, i can choose the options ?

Kernel patch update for solaris 10 x86
I have Solaris 10 06/06 installed on x86 machine which is using svm and clustered with another node. The kernel revision is 118855-19 from the uname -a output. I am looking for the kernel patch updation and I heard 118855-36 is the latest one. Shall I go ahead with this patch and what r the dependency patches for this.
If anyone done this please suggest and guide me..For Solaris 10 x86 the latest offered with smpatch is 125101-07 and yes it may be recommended to patch. Then again you said clustered with sun cluster? You may want to check the documentation and if your machines aren't facing the internet you may wait for 7/07 to hit the street and do an upgrade.

This may invoke some violent responses, but i need to run some version of MS Internet Explorer on a Solaris 10 workstation. The workstation needs to access a web app that only runs on IE.
I found out that MS used to provide a UNIX port of IE, but its been pulled, besides that was for SPARC only(?).
Does anyone have IE running on Solaris 10 x86, and if so could they point me in the right direction?
ThanksCheck out Crossover Office...
http://www.codeweavers.com/
A former coworker used it to run IE on his JDS
desktop... it was pretty funny.
Looks like they support Solaris now too.I exchanged emails with Jeremy White of CodeWeavers about running CrossOver Office on Solaris. I ran it on Red Hat successfully years ago. His response said:
"However, the bad news is that the existing product won't work for your Opterons (and is a bit long in the tooth besides), and we don't yet have the pure Solaris product available yet.
To be candid, we're waiting until we have a more clear sense that it's worth it. It's not a ton of work (I mentally think of it as being $100K/year for us to develop + support), but we just haven't seen evidence that the demand is strong enough yet.
We're hoping that Sun will help to get us off the fence, but they move so slowly that I fear that hope may be in vain.".
If somebody has run Crossover Office on X86 Solaris I would like to hear about it.

I have been Solaris 10 x86 on my Intel machines and never had any problem with SMC. However, things seems to have changed since
nv-b40 release. SMC out-of-the-box does not work even the first time. I get a message like Server is not running, Toolbox is not available. I tried to start the server manually using the command
/etc/init.d/init.wbem start
and I got the message
svccfg:Pattern 'application/swcwbem' doesn't match any instances or services.
I have reinstalled nv-b38 and SMC works fine. Does any one know what has changed between nv-b38 and nv-b40 releases which caused SMC not to work out-of-the-box? Also, if any one has encountered this problem and got a fix for it, could you please post it here? Thanks a bunch in advance.

Kalpesh MehtaI had similar problems several months ago. I suspect this happens when host pc does not have floppy drive(or bios somehow misreports it) as it was in my case. Solaris 8 seems to work fine in the same environment, so I keep using it for now. Possible workaround might be to use DCA from Solaris 8: Installation of Sol9 started just fine after I entered Sol8 DCA and asked it to boot from Sol9 CD.
Hope this problem will be fixed in subsequent Sol9 releases.

Solaris 9 x86 bug report - el_GR.ISO8859-7 & CDE
I'm posting this article here, because I can't find any official Solaris 9 x86 bug report page. I hope the developers will notice it. I'm using Solaris 9 x86 (12/02), with the latest 9_x86_Recommended patch cluster installed, and support for Greek installed too.
It seems there is some kind of problem, when trying to view text files with Greek (el_GR.ISO8859-7) characters, which were created under Windows. To be more specific:
If I boot at CDE with language el_GR.ISO8859-7, and try to view a .txt file (just with a simple double click), which I have created under Windows, with Greek characters,
the screen goes black, and the CDE login screen appears again (restarts). If I keep the Greek language or change the language to US English, I can boot at CDE again, with
no problems. If I try "command line logging", the screen goes off - just like when the computer is powered off, and I can't do anything, (well, except pressing the reset button, that's the sure way). And if I use the "init 6" command, while being logged at CDE, from a terminal, the Graphical Desktop exits, and then, the screen goes off again (just like the computer is powered off), but finally the computer manages to restart.
I'm using the Sun X server, NOT the XFree86 porting kit and I use the entry

in /usr/dt/config/Xservers file, to start the X server.

I don't know if this is a bug or something, and I'm very curious about the cause. I didn't have much time for any other "experiments".
Anyway, I hope this will help developers solve a problem -if it really exists-.

no problems.
:0 Local local_uid@console nobody /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0 -dpsfileops
in /usr/dt/config/Xservers file, to start the X server.
Here is the $HOME_DIR/.dt/startlog file:

I don't know if this is a bug or something, and I'm very curious about the cause. I didn't have much time for any other "experiments".
Anyway, I hope this will help developers solve a problem -if it really exists-.

i've downloaded some free games for my iphone4 but they are using my internet because they have ads. does anyone know if there are any games that don't have these ads and don't require internet AT ALL?and if i disable my internet connexion, does it help?
Thank you. I put it in airplane mode like you suggested, but it looks to me like all the applications and ads are still running. Anyway, I'm just gonna play when I'm really really bored and use them as less as possible. Thank you again for your quick answer.
