Solaris 10 x86 shared drive mount issues
I have an XP installation, a recently-installed Solaris 10 x86 partition, and a FAT32 partition shared between them.
The issue is this:
When I have /share mounted (using mount -o rw) and listed in the /etc/vfstab, the super-user owns everything and can write there. No other user can own a file or write anything on that partition. I've been getting a "chown: invalid argument" type message on every attempt.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Just an update, I just reloaded the server with Solaris 9 x86 and the same problem on it as well. Now I am not 100% that this card/drive configuration did work on solaris 9 before, maybe it was a different SCSI card.
The server has been loaded with Windows Server and it works ok on that, so I know that the card/drive combination works ok, just not with Solaris.
Any ideas anyone ? Do I need a different SCSI adapter ?

Solaris 10 x86 b63 USB keyboard issue
Hello. I am trying to install Solaris 10 x86 on a Dell Optiplex SX280. The system uses a USB keyboard and mouse. When asked as to the type of installation to perform (1 - Interactive, 2 - JumpStart, 3 - Text Only), I select 1, then the system start booting and the following messages are displayed:
Configuring devices.
Using RPC Bootparams for network configuration information
ioctl (kbd type): Invalid argument
and hangs at this point. The keyboard stops responding so that a power cycle is the only option. Obviously the keyboard is recognized for me to select option 1 above but something happens after that. Any ideas? Thanks.

After the Solaris kernel is booted, either the Solaris PS/2 keyboard driver or the USB keyboard driver has
to handle the system's keyboard. For your system it's apparently the USB keyboard driver.
I'm not sure what's wrong with this system. You could try to boot into single user mode with verbose
kernel messages enabled. At the "1 - Interactive, 2 - JumpStart, 3 - Text Only" prompt, type

"ohci", "uhci" or "ehci". ehci is for USB 2.0, while ohci & uhci are for USB 1.1 devices. I guess your
USB keyboard is an USB 1.x device, so you need either a working "ohci" or "uhci" driver for the USB

USB thumb drive mounting issues in Lion?
Hi all,
I just installed Lion on my mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro a couple of days ago. All seemed to be going great until I tried to use my USB thumb drives. I have four of these (3 Sandisk and 1 Imation), and none will mount. When I go into Disk Utility I can see them, but when I try to mount them manually the response is "Mount Failed" and some text regarding running Disk First Aid. However, even when I repair the volume, it still won't mount. This happens with all four drives, and I used them all without incident a few days ago when I still had Snow Leopard installed. They are all formatted for FAT32. I've seen a few scattered messages about USB and NTFS mounting issues, but it appears to be an isolated problem. Anybody else having this issue? If so, are there any workarounds? I'd hate to have to revert back to Snow Leopard just to use my thumb drives.Try to use the disk utility an format one of your Thumb Drive, and see if it can mount.

External Hard Drive Mounting Issues
Hi everybody!
Problem:
My G Technologies external hard drive mounts inconsistently since the Pro Tools session I was working on today crashed. When it does manage to mount my Trash Bin on the dock fills up with trash automatically and this trash cannot be emptied.
In addition I have been unable to even open up my external hard drive on the desktop once it has mounted--I get the infinite pinwheel of death! If it does open, I'll eventually get to a folder that upon opening also brings up the pinwheel of death. Each time this happens I am forced to manually shut down my computer. Any suggestions? You help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you in advance.
I'm using a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.4.11 and it has a Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The ports I'm using with the external hard drive is Firewire 800.Try booting in safe mode and emptying the trash. Try doing a Finder - Secure Empty Trash deletion....
I believe your problems are related to large files that were marked for deletion not being deleted... -
SMB shared drive mounts, but I can see the folders
Hi,
I'm having issues seeing the shared folders in a SMB drive that mounts ok in my Mac. I use my active directory account with domain and password to authenticate, and after the drive successfully mounts, it just won't show anything in it, it seems to be empty but in the get info panel it shows 1.3 Tb.
Anyone can help me out. I really need to access the shared files.
PabloI have worked it out.
I was mounting the wrong drive (700+ drives...) hence couldn't open its contents.
Now I'm a happy share drive user!

Sun one 7 update 3 + solaris 8 -x86 setup crashes..!
Hi
I'm having a wierd problem setting up sun one app server update 3 on solaris 8 x86 platform.
The issue is that when i try running the setup it crashes
======================================
./setup -console
ld.so.1: ./setup: fatal: libCstd.so.1: open failed: No such file or Directory
Killed
======================================
I guess the app server is not fiding some shared object.. so i edited /etc/default/init and added
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib.. but no luck ! I could not find any patch @ sunsolve that addresses this issue ...
The app server was supposed to be for solaris 9-x86. Is it causing the problem ? is there any workaround for this ?
Also does any one know how to remove all the windowing packages from a solaris machine ? I want the machie to be a server with no GUI stuff on it ..Try collecting and looking into the sequence of all system calls taking place during setup execution with truss:
# truss -o truss.out -feald ./setup -console
There is a good chance that you might notice the reason why the ld is failing on trying to load the libCstd.so. -
Strange Shared Drive Showing Up

I noticed a strange shared drive showing up tonight. It's name is "getinthelooppc."
When I tried to connect gave me an error but I tried again and was able to connect with my computer password. It was just a shared drive of some kind. Then it discounted me and went away.
What could it have been? Any ideas?are u using a wireless router to connect to the internet?if yes than try to put a password on your connection and you wont have this problem again....i had the same problem and did what i just said and worked perfectly fine

I just installed FCS 3 and when I set up a cluster in Compressor a "shared" drive mounts on my desktop. Is there anyway to have that not appear on my desktop? It was not there in FCS2.
I need to have other server volumes appear on the desktop though, I'd just like to not have that one there all the time.Finder > Preferences > General > Show These Items on the Desktop. Uncheck "Connected Servers".
I need to have other server volumes appear on the desktop though.
Then you have to live with it. Is that really such a problem? -

How to Reorganize CSM200 Shared Storage in Solaris 10 x86 Oracle 10gR2
I could use some guidance from those who are more experienced in RAC administration in a Solaris environment with ASM. I have a three-node RAC with Oracle 10gR2 instances on top of Solaris 10 x86 where the shared storage is a Sun CSM200 disk array which looks like a single disk to the rest of the world. I'm not very familiar with the CSM200 Common Array Manager but I do have access to use it.
During initial setup, I followed the Oracle cookbook and defined a storage slice for each of the following: OCR, OCR mirror, three voting disks, and +DATA, for a total of six slices. I brought up the RAC and we've used it for a couple of weeks.
This is a Dev and QA environment, so it changes pretty fast. The new requirement is to add a +FRA and to add a mount point for a file system on the shared storage, so that all three Oracle instances can refer to the same external table(s).
However, I've already used all the available slices in the VTOC on the shared logical drive. I'm not sure how to proceed.
1) Is it necessary to use the CAM to create two logical disks out of the single existing logical disk?
2) If so, how destructive is that? I don't need to keep the contents of the database, but I do not want to reinstall CRS or ASM or the DB instances.
3) Is it possible to combine the OCR and its mirror on the same slice, thus freeing a slice for reuse?
4) Is it possible to combine all three voting disks on the same slice, thus freeing two slices for reuse?
Edited by: user12006221 on Mar 29, 2011 3:30 PM
Another question: Under 10.2.0.4, is it possible for the OCR and voting disks to be managed by ASM? I know it would be possible under 11g, but that's not an option as I am trying to match a customer's environment and they aren't going to 11g any time real soon. What you see is what happens when the Java runtime running on Solaris 10 x86 tries to load a library which is compiled for SPARC.
Because of the native parts in SAP GUI for Java, compilations and installers are required for each OS - HW combination.
The supported platforms can be seen in SAP note 954572. For Solaris only SPARC is currently supported.
Because of the effort needed for compiling, testing, support etc. it is required to focus on OS - HW combinations widely used on desktop machines and Solaris 10 on x86 currently does not seem to be one of those. -
Boot from second hard drive with ZFS in Solaris 10 x86
Hi,
The usual menu.lst to boot Solaris10 x86 with a boot environment that contains a ZFS boot loader is this one
title Solaris 10 5/08 s10x_nbu6wos_nightly X86
findroot (pool_rpool,0,a)
kernel$ /platform/i86pc/multiboot -B $ZFS-BOOTFS
module /platform/i86pc/boot_archive
title Solaris failsafe
findroot (pool_rpool,0,a)
kernel /boot/multiboot kernel/unix -s -B console=ttyb
module /boot/x86.miniroot-safeI understand that to add an alternate boot disk, I have to play with installgrub and then attach it in the pool.
But my question is : Is there a way to boot from my alternate hard disk by adding a new entry in menu.lst or is the only
way is to modify the BIOS parameter?
Thanks for your help,
Groucho_frGroucho_fr wrote:
Thanks for your answer Alan,
But ok, I imagineI can add a grub entry. But what I want to know is what is the exact way to boot from an alternate hard disk on Solaris 10u6
x86.AFAIK there are only two ways to do this. Select the disks via BIOS which becomes a royal PITA in a short amount of time or play with a boot manager such as GRUB until you get the syntax right.
Personally I put all OS's on the primary disks if possible to avoid these situations and if I have others to play with then you can easily mount them in or set them up as D: drive etc...
The only exception would be in an enterprise setting where you need to do things such as mirroring but then again in those situations it's only one OS per machine anyways so it's much easier.
So at the end, I am not sure what I have to configure and what is the procedure to boot from my alternate boot diskTry the grub homepage for the grub manual and hopefully for a mailing list or try a search engine.
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-5461/zfsboot-1?a=view
has an example to follow of using -B.
And moreover, the installgrub does not working for me :
root@mac1 # zpool status
pool: rpool
state: ONLINE
scrub: resilver completed after 0h2m with 0 errors on Thu Mar 26 10:56:24 2009
config:
NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
rpool ONLINE 0 0 0
mirror ONLINE 0 0 0
c5t0d0s0 ONLINE 0 0 0
c5t4d0s0 ONLINE 0 0 0
errors: No known data errors
root@mac1 # installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c5t4d0s0
cannot open/stat device /dev/rdsk/c5t4d0s2
You shouldn't need to do an installgrub if you installed Solaris. Try c5t4d0s0 not s2.

Solaris 10 x86 -Scsi Adaptec 29320ALP Card issue
Hi
I am trying to install Solaris 10 x86 edition . I am facing an issue with the scsi card adaptec 29320. Not detecting the disk at the time of installation. I checked the card in HCL. It is available. Any way to install.I'm not sure what the root cause for the firewire driver hang is.
Maybe an issue with interrupt routing. You may want to experiment
with BIOS ACPI / IOAPIC / PnP OS settings, and/or the
acpi-user-options property.
Anyway, to get rid of the firewire driver, you can probably add an
"exclude: hci1394" line to /etc/system and reboot. -
Solaris 10 x86 Install - Firewire Issue
Greetings,
I am installing Solaris 10 x86 (03/05) and am running into a lot of trouble with the firewire drivers.
The first CD installs properly, but any subsequent reboot (to install other CDs or boot the OS) fails. By watching the boot messages on a boot -v, I discovered that the system hangs after loading the firewire drivers.
If I run the hardware configuration assistant during boot and remove both 1394 devices, I am allowed to boot - but only that once. Even if I save the hardware configuration and tell the hardware configuration tool to use it during the next boot (by pressing Esc and loading the profile), it automatically re-adds my 1394 devices and hangs. The only way I can successfully boot is by going into the hardware configuration assistant each time and removing the 1394 devices, each time. Removing the 1394 card is not an option, as this system boots other OSes for computer forensics via removable disk racks and the firewire is needed for these purposes.
So, my question is this - how can I tell Solaris to ignore the 1394 devices without manually removing them during each boot? And how can I get the hardware configuration assistant (the one that I launch by pressing Esc during the boot process) to actually use the configurations I've saved?
Thanks in advance.I'm not sure what the root cause for the firewire driver hang is.

MetaDB issue - Solaris 10u8 x86
Hi all,
I am running Solaris 10u8 x86 on VMware.
I am trying to configure SVM in my virtual machine and meet the following issue about metadb.
I have 01 HDD which contains Solaris OS, swap... and 03 more HDDs for holding data. I did not do anything on the first HDD. The other 3 HDDs will be configured to be a RAID 5 volume using SVM. (I will call these 3 HDDs disk2, disk3 and disk4)
On the disk2, I created slice 7 from cylinder 3 to cylinder 10 for holding metadb. I also created the slice 0 from cylinder 11 to the end of the HDD for to be a component of the RAID 5 volume. (In this case, the location of the slice 7 for metadb is *"before"* the location of the slice 0)
The VTOC of the disk2 is applied to the disk3 and disk4.
After dividing the 3 HDDs into slices. I created the metadb on the slice 7 of the 3 HDDs. After that I created the RAID 5 volume using the slice 0 of the 3 HDDs. However, after I reboot the machine, it said that my RAID 5 volume is not exist. the metadb command showed that there is no metadb.
I tried to test another case. On the disk2, I created slice 7 from cylinder 1000 to cylinder 1200 for holding metadb. I also created the slice 0 from cylinder 1 to cylinder 999 for to be a component of the RAID 5 volume. (In this case, the location of the slice 7 for metadb is *"after"* the location of the slice 0)
After dividing the 3 HDDs into slices. I created the metadb on the slice 7 of the 3 HDDs. After that I created the RAID 5 volume using the slice 0 of the 3 HDDs. After rebooting the system everything went fine. My metadb is exist and the RAID 5 volume can be mounted and used.
I cannot find any reason why I could not place the slice 7 (which holds metadb) *"before"* the other slices which used to hold data.
Please help me to explain this case.
Thanks and BR.
