Solaris 10 x86 Won't Startup After Install - system just restarts itself?

Ok, I'm another one of those wacky Vista people. I have a Dell Latitude D630 running a dual boot scenario with Vista Ultimate and Solaris 10.
I had plenty of issues getting that working but it does work. Vista WILL boot. Solaris won't boot. Solaris failsafe will boot.
Now the issue is....
Solaris will not boot. When I select it from the GRUB menu, I see some text that flashes really quickly before the system restarts. It's the same text that I see when I boot failsafe mode.
Something to the effect of Sun Solaris.... blah blah....Subject To License Terms and Conditions....
So it's as if it's trying to boot Solaris, but for some reason it just restarts the system. The only thing that works is failsafe mode and Vista.
How can I troubleshoot this issue when I can only get in failsafe?
Please note I'm an IT professional (so I'm quite capable) but I have ZERO Solaris experience and limited (very limited) Linux experience so break it down for me if you will.
Thank you in advance!
SPECIFIC DETAILS:
*1. Solaris 10 x86 Platform*
*2. Windows Vista Ultimate*
*3. Dell Latitude D630 Notebook, 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM*
*4. (1) HDD with a Vista and Solaris partition*
*5. I have tried installing Solaris 10 (3) times to resolve. To no avail.*
*7. Failsafe mode does boot.*
*8. Grub looks like this:*
kernel /platform/i86pc/multiboot
modul /platform/i86pc/boot_archive

  • Macbook Pro won't startup after installing of 10.8.4

I just installed the 10.8.4 combo update package anf my Macbok Pro won't restart. After downloading the updates, the computer restarted itself, finished installing the updates, restarted itsalf again, anf when it gets to the gray screen with the Apple logo and the rotation icon underneath the logo, it just hangs. It goes no further than that. I let it run for about an hour before I tried to restart it manually, but I could never get it past that final screen. How do I fix it?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
A dead logic-board battery in a Mac Pro can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • Macbook won't startup after installing update to osx 10.4.8

After I installed the update to OSX 10.4.8 I get the screen with the spinning wheel and then a dialogue box that says the macbook needs to be restarted. Same thing every time. Any ideas?

the sign says to shut down cause of an unresolved kernel panic, right?
That can be because of non-apple software running in the background. for example a widget, gmail notifier, an automatic "check for updates" etc.
You can try holding down the shift key at start up to start without any "extensions". If that works then, the cause is some extra background program running.
I had my "you must restart" signs disapear by removing all such not necessary non-apple software. (rememember to remove both the application and the preferences from the prefencefolder in the library).
If thats not enough, You can also toss away all preferences from the prefences folder. You will have to reset settings in the various programs, but the programs are still there. In mail, you may have to make in import of your mail, which will still be in your MAIL folder in the library. Nothing essential will be removed.
If your roblem persist...THEN you should make an archive and install (or sometimes better..back up your mail, addressbook, calendar, documents, music, pictures, films..etc.. and make a clean install.) But really, most often its a small thing teasing, which can be fixed strategically instead of erarings everything. so try removing non-apple not neccesary auto-running software first.

  • ITunes won't open after installing upgrade and restarting

When I click on my iTunes icon in the dock, iTunes won't open. Instead, a message box comes up: "The file iTunes "library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."
Just before this happened, I imported a lot of music into my library. Now iTunes only opens if I pIug my ipod into my Mac.
Is there any way I can get iTunes to open by clicking on the icon, as it used to do?

What version of iTunes is installed in the Apple default location ..... /Applications/iTunes ???
Drag the iTunes icon in the Dock to the Desktop and release; it will be deleted with a poof! Don't worry it's only an alias.
In your Home Page ~/Library/Preferences/ ......... drag to the Trash and delete:
    com.apple.iTunes.plist and com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
(don't worry ... new ones will be created upon relaunch of iTunes .... +see below+)
    Using: /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/Repair Permissions
    RESTART the computer
Within the Applicatons folder: double-click the iTunes icon ... if the launch is successful, drag a copy of the iTunes icon to the Dock ... release ... you will now have a current alias in the Dock.
P.S. *Do Not* have the iPod connected to the computer during this process!

  • Macbook pro won't boot after installing update 10.9.3

macbook pro won't boot after installing update 10.9.3

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

They do work. I have one and mine is working. Have you tried to reset your iPad? HOlding down teh sleep and home keys until it reboots then try pairing again.
A slightly more drastic thing is to go into the settings and reset all settings. THe downside, you will need to retweak your device but it can help fix keyboard glitches.

  • Mac Mini won't start after installing OS X 10.6.3

My Mac Mini won't start after installing Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3. When I turn it on, the Apple logo appears and the initialization line starts to fill, but it suddenly stops. It does that again and stops at the same point, but this time it shuts down. What should I do?

If you are coming from 10.5.8, hopefully you backed up your important data first. Your mini will need at minimum, 1 GB of RAM to install Snow Leopard and at least 5 GB of storage remaining on your boot drive.
I treat 10.6.3 as a fresh, full install over a 10.5.8 system. That means I choose Disk Utility from the Installer's menu and repartition the boot drive as a single partition, Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) format, and use the GUID partition scheme from the options button. At this point, while still in Disk Utility, I would verify the drive under First Aid.
Then I turn the installer loose, and reboot into a working 10.6.3 system, ready for the software updates that take the machine to 10.6.8.
So, following the above guidelines, reinstall 10.6.3.

  • Motion 3 Won't Open After Installing

    Hi,
I reinstalled Motion 3 after doing it 2 days ago because the beach ball keeps coming up and never leaves causing me to force quit. I let it stay up one night and when i awoke 8 hours later it was still up. thus, i reinstalled after trashing it. there's never any motion files in the library to delete and no motion files in the receipts. this time it won't open after installing it and booting down computer. I have lion 10.7.5   the fcp studio disk that i install for motion says version 3 but could have sworn on the computer when it was working it said motion 4. Any suggestions? did all my software updates too.
    Thanks,
    joe

Motion 3 is part of Final Cut Studio 2. There are many threads on these boards about trying to get those apps to install properly on OS versions above 10.6.8. Here's one such thread. A search will bring up additional ones.

  • Safari won't start, after installing X Lion

Safari won't start, after installing X Lion

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
