Solaris 10 zone: root crontab deleted.

Hello,
for a couple of weeks I have notice that one of our solaris zone has its root crontab deleted. the file root on /var/spool/cron/crontabs is simply gone.
I have changed the password so it is somethign inside the OS which is deleting the crontab... i cannot see anything in the cron log.
how can i stop or find the root cause for this..
thank you.

This should help you.

  • SMC doesn't work in any solaris 10 whole-root zones

    All
Are you aware of SUN not designing whole-root zones to work with Solaris Management Console?
None of my solaris 10 whole-root zones/containers will run Solaris Management Console. Very, very frustrating!
Anyone have a trick to get around this crazy design??
    Thank you!
    SB

    Thanks for your help!
Yes, i see all font types.
But maybe i havn't explained my problem good enough:
I have a FLA-File which works great in Flash CS3: everything – even on different computers – is okay!
The same FLA-File on the same computer in Flash CS6: the font-rendering is broken!
In CS6 there seems to be a difference between textfields made via ActionScript and textfields on the stage: see the attached file in my first post.

  • SAP Install on Solaris 10 Sparse Root Zone ../usr/sap

    Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone is running SAP on Solaris 10, SAP EHP4 ECC 6.0 Oracle DB version 10. App and Db in a sparse root zone.
When we initially created our SAP install the Directories containing <SID> and trans_<SID> was give to us as "/usr/sap"
Since this is a sparse root zone, the /usr directory is read only. To accommodate SAP, a directory was created in the global zone for each of the containers ( we have ECC, PI, BW etc..) and then mounted as a filesystem in each container.   /usr/sap exists in every container, and it was supposed to be nothing more than a mount point for the <SID> and trans_<SID> NFS mounts. This /usr/sap directory exists on the global zone of our M5000 and the additional files and folders are eating up OS space.
This creates me with two problems.
    1. WHen I take a snapshot, I can't recover the zone in a automatic fashion because the local zone can not see the global /usr directory, so I have to recover that folder/file manually.
    2. I don't know exactly, but files are being created in the usr/sap directory that is causing internal drives to grow quickly.
To resolve our issues it was determined that the best course of action is to remove the connection to the global zone by creating a /sap directory in each container and linking it as /usr/sap.  The /sap directory will be an NFS/FC mount point and that will fix the issue of disk space usage and backup recovery.
Does anyone have another way to solve this problem or any suggestions that we should do something different. ?

I use sparse zones on Solaris with ZFS.
I delegate filesystems to the zone.

    best regards

I see mention of a similar problem, but only with early development releases of solaris10 branded zones running on Solaris 11 development bits. It seems as though this is not what you are running.
Since there are no swap caps nor brand emulation in place, the next thing I would suspect would be that you somehow have inconsistencies between key libraries (e.g. libc) and the kernel. This could happen if you have a full-root zone that has been force attached (zoneadm -z <zone> attach -F). In the past, I've seen products that do this under the covers (e.g. Veritas Cluster) so it may have happened without your knowledge. If it is a sparse root zone, you may want to run "zoneadm -z <zone> detach; zoneadm -z <zone> attach -u". Prior to doing so, take whatever precautions you would normally take when patching a system.
If you open a support call about this I bet the first advice you are going to get is to patch, as you seem to be 2+ years behind. Also, newer releases of Java 5 are available at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javasebusiness/downloads/java-archive-downloads-javase5-419410.html.

  • Solaris 10 zone config for JES

Setup a zone to install JES - Web servers, but when I launch the installer I get the following:
    WARNING: Unsupported non-global zone
    EntSysResources:zoneCheckPanel-Gui-LocalZoneSupported
Something in the zone setup is incorrect, but not sure what.
Anyone else out running JES in Solaris 10 zones?
    Thanks!

    From docs.sun.com -
The following Java ES and zones scenarios are supported in this release of Java ES:
    * Installing Java ES in a non-global zone that uses the whole root file system (Using the default sparse root file system is not supported.)
    * Installing Java ES in the global zone with no non-global zones
Zone can be 2 type - sparse root and whole root . sparse root model has following folders inherited - /lib, /platform, /sbin and /usr.
If a non-global zone doesn't have any inherit-pkg-dir resources, such a zone is said to be a whole root one
If you want to create a whole root zone but default shared file systems resources have been added by using inherit-pkg-dir, you must remove these default inherit-pkg-dir resources using zonecfg before you install the zone:
    zonecfg:my-zone> remove inherit-pkg-dir dir=/lib
    zonecfg:my-zone> remove inherit-pkg-dir dir=/platform
    zonecfg:my-zone> remove inherit-pkg-dir dir=/sbin
    zonecfg:my-zone> remove inherit-pkg-dir dir=/usr

    Hello All,
I would love to know if someone has a solution to this as I am seeing a similar issue with a slightly different setup.
Solaris 8 and Netra 240. I get the same result with and without patches and finish scripts. After the jumpstart and the failed boot attempt from disk. I can boot from cd, copy the glm driver from the cd to disk, and then everything works as it should. Obviously this is not a solution but only a work around.
Is it something to do with the SCSI hardware architecture used in the *240s?

Your problem is that you can only create Solaris 10 zones. Zones is not a true virtual machine so it can not support older version of Solaris. you want to install. If you need to run Solaris 8 on the same machine as Solaris 10 your only choice is to use something like VMware.

  • Inetd service/program crashes with core dump in Solaris 8 zone/container

I have developed a service in C that is launched from inetd when something comes on a specific port.
When a connection is opened to the port a core dump is created in the same directory where the executable file is located.
If you run the same service program from the command line everything is working perfect.
This is running in a Solaris 8 zone/container on a Solaris 10 machine.
Everything is set correctly in /etc/inetd.conf and in /etc/services.
I have even stripped down the program to a hello world program that is just printing a string to the screen and it is still crashing with a core dump.
    # ldd test_srv
    /usr/lib/secure/s8_preload.so.1
    libc.so.1 => /usr/lib/libc.so.1
    libdl.so.1 => /usr/lib/libdl.so.1
    /usr/platform/SUNW,Sun-Fire-480R/lib/libc_psr.so.1
The same service is running on a Linux machine and on a Solaris 10 machine without zones/containers without any problems.
Can you please help me figure out what am I missing. Is there something specific with zones/containers that should be set / configured?
Do I have to set some specific env. variables to work in a Solaris 8 zone/container environment or is it something very simple that I'm missing?

Could you please examine the truss log and advice what the problem is and how to fix it?

  • Global swap is not reflected in branded solaris 8 zone

I have 32 GB in my global zone
    root@Z21-AP-02 # swap -s
    total: 5753912k bytes allocated + 511136k reserved = 6265048k used, 32257984k available
when I look in my branded solaris 8 zone I see a much smaller value
    root@txpwrsrv07-2:/ # swap -s
    total: 3202696k bytes allocated + 0k reserved = 3202696k used, 2040184k available
    Tried
    zonecfg -z txpwrsrv07-2
    select capped-memory
    set swap=32g
    end
    exit
    no difference.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply

  • Veritas Netbackup Client Installed on Solaris 10 Zone Unable to Work

    Hi
I am having problems with Veritas Netbackup client which had been installed on a Solaris 10 zone only. We are using Veritas Netbackup server which is installed on a Windows 2000 server and the NBU server is unable to add the new client for backup.
The way I installed the NBU client was using the manual method where I installed directly on the zone. The zone I've created is a full root zone and the installation seems to be successful.
Somehow the NBU server just can't see the new client. Do I need to install the client in the global zone to make it work? Is there any checks I can do to make sure I have installed the client correctly and that the services are running in the solaris 10 zone side? Any kind of help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Xavier

    Hi mcbrune1
I've check on the services in the client and all 4 services were up and running. Than I realized that this client was hardened a few weeks back. So I checked on the /etc/hosts.allow file and added an entry to allow the Master server to communicate using bpcd.
Now the Master server is able to see the client and everything seems to be working. Thanks for your help.
    Cheers

  • ASMCA error during 11.2 Grid install on Solaris 10 zone

    Hello,
I'm installing 11.2 grid infrastructure in a solaris 10 sparse root zone (SPARC). The install ran fine, but the final step tried to create and configure the ASM instance. This failed with the errors below. It looks like it is trying to add the +ASM instance to the cluster resources, but fails for some reason. It looks like something to do with unable to read/write a file or it does not exist, but it doesn't say what the file/location is. I would have raised an SR but metalink is inaccessible to us at the moment (keeps saying server error, and yes I am logging into the new flash site).

  • Zone create not installing all zone root files

I'm installing a new T5240 Solaris 10 u6 10/08 with the 10_Recommended patch kit from 09 Dec 2008. The system is jumpstarted with /, /usr, /var, /export/home on SVM mirrored internal 146g drives. When I first got the server up and running, I tested zone creation with a default zone setup:
    zonecfg -z test
    create -b
    set zonepath=/export/home/zones
    set autoboot=true
    add net
    set physical=nxge0
    set address=192.168.103.254
    end
    verify
    commit
    exit
    zoneadm -z test install
    Preparing to install zone <test>.
Creating list of files to copy from the global zone.
Copying <139100> files to the zone.
    Initializing zone product registry.
    Determining zone package initialization order.
Preparing to initialize <1164> packages on the zone.
This worked, so I removed it and continued with the server configuration:
The nxge0 interface has been configured with 802.1q vlan (nxge103000) and is successfully on the network. I configured MPX/IO on the pair of fp interfaces. I've added a disk from our HP EVA SAN array and created a ZFS pool and filesystem for the zoneroot, mounted at /opt/zones/zoneroots/oraprod1.
Now, when I try to recreate the test zone it now fails to copy all of the required files to the root, puts many errors into the install log about files changed in the global-zone root after installation and won't boot the zone past single-user maintenance mode.
The zone create now shows: (after adjusting the phys net i/f name)
    bash-3.00# zoneadm -z test2 install
    Preparing to install zone <test2>.
Creating list of files to copy from the global zone.
Copying <78> files to the zone.
    Initializing zone product registry.
    Determining zone package initialization order.
Preparing to initialize <1165> packages on the zone.
When I zlogin to the zone after it's booted into maint, it's obvious that many root fs files are missing - including
most of the SMF service manifests.
I've searched for forums, mailing lists and sun support knowledgebase without finding anything similar.
    What am I missing?

Yes, I've reproduced the problem with and without the '-b' option on create, on UFS as well as ZFS filesystem and on /export/home/zones on the local drive.
My plan now is to walk thru the configuration process one step at a time, trying to create the zone at each step. I re-jumped the server last night and created the zone correctly. I then removed it, installed patches in single user, rebooted with "-r" and was able to recreate the zone. I've enabled mpxio and i can still create the zone. Next up tonight is to add the 802.1Q configuration, add the ZFS rootzone and run our custom scripts that to server hardening, user setup, etc.
There was one bug report that sounded "interesting" having to do with a patch set that wasn't zone-friendly as it left patch files in place w/o fixing the manifests so when the zone create ran it found files that didn't match the checksums or whatever is used to validate file correctness when copying files into the zone.
I'll keep updating this with my progress and findings.

  • Migrate Solaris 10 Physical Server to Solaris 10 Zone

    Hi All,
I am trying to migrate a physical solaris 10 server to a solaris 10 zone. I have used the flar create archive tool to make the image.
On the target system i have created but not installed a solaris 10 zone. According to suns documentation you should be able to run zoneadm -z <zonename> install -a <flash file path
But when i do this it keeps wanting the -x option after the install but no where does it say in the documentation.
Has anybody come across this at all?
    Thanks
    D

It's not too bad. I have been doing this for a couple of years before the latest update came out.
    0. Ensure the two systems are at the same release and patch levels.
    1. Create AND install the solaris non global zone (ngz)
    2. Once complete, from the global zone, remove the root directory of the ngz.
    cd <zoneroot>/root (i.e. cd /zones/myhost/root && rm -rf /zones/myhost/root/.)
    3. split the flar of the source system .. 'flar split sourceflar.flar' ( you ar interested in the archive file from the split)
    4. from the global zone, extract the archive file into the ngz root.
    cd <zoneroot>/root
cat archive | uncompress -c | cpio -ivdmu
    5. boot the zone
    6. when the zone comes up, you will have some cleaning up to do of the non needed services
fmd,picl,fc-fabric,sysevent .. there will be others.. but just stepping through them with svcs -x
    7. that should do it.
    good luck

  • Setting a floating IP in a solaris local zone!!

I want to install my fault tolerant application in two different
solaris local zones just to save the hardware cost and for testing
    purposes.
Earlier before solaris 10, My application runs on two different
machines and receives the incoming requests on a floating IP, thus it
achieves the Fault tolerant behavior with floating IP moving across
the machines on the active application.
There was a separate monitoring process on each machine which runs as
root user and sets and unsets the floating IP using ioctl system calls
on a particular machine as per request received from the application.
Now i want to replicate the same behaviour in solaris 10 setup with my
Fault tolerant application running on two local zones and my
monitoring process which runs on each local zone, set and unset the
floating IP on the particular local zone.
No i want to know that if it is possible for any application to set
floating IP on a particular local zone, from that zone itself and how
    can we achieve the same?
    regards,
    rish

I gather some big changes are afoot with the IP stack and zones with the latest Solaris update (the 8/07, update 4 release) -- each zone either does or can have it's own IP stack. This may change the answer to this question...those who's been playing with Open Solaris and/or Solaris Express probably can answer more about that.

That's correct. You can now use private IP instances for a non-global zone if you want. That zone will now have it's own IP stack and can up/down addresses or whatever. But for now they have to have their own dedicated "interface". This has to be an ethernet device or a VLAN device.

Yup. Even in the old editor it was inconsistent where worked.  Some forums it would, but not all.  I guess now it consistently doesn't work? :-)<br />

  • How to mount zone root fs readonly

    Hi,
i'd like to create a zone where only /var is read/write mounted, anything else read only. Can i mount the zone root FS read only, if yes, how should i configure it?
    Fritz

well, i gave it a try, created the root fs of the zone as a zfs file system. I booted the zone and changed the ZFS fs to readonly, works fine, but a reboot failed as it could not write to the /dev directory
So i created an own fs for /dev under the zone root and set this one to read/write.
I thought this would be a smart idea, but Solaris does not accept any mounts:
    pool01/zones/xxxx-v1/zone            497M  65.4G  99.5K  /export/zones/xxxx-v1/zone
    pool01/zones/xxxx-v1/zone/root       497M  65.4G   497M  /export/zones/xxxx-v1/zone/root
    pool01/zones/xxxx-v1/zone/root/dev    18K  65.4G    18K  /export/zones/xxxx-v1/zone/root/dev
zoneadm: zone 'xxxx-v1': These file-systems are mounted on subdirectories of /export/zones/xxxx-v1/zone/root:
    zoneadm: zone 'xxxx-v1':   /export/zones/xxxx-v1/zone/root/dev
zoneadm: zone 'xxxx-v1': call to zoneadmd failedAny smart idea around this problem?
