Solaris 11.1 64bit Install freezing after GRUB selection

All,
I am in the process of creating a DEV box for hosting my projects and I am wanting to install Solaris 11.1 onto a Lenovo Desktop PC .
PC Details:
Lenovo M92p Thinkcentre 3227
Intel Core i5 3rd Gen
4Gb Ram
500gb HDD
Technical Specs
http://support.lenovo.com/en_GB/product-and-parts/detail.page?DocID=PD024409
Currently the system has a OEM version of Windows 7 installed on it.
So I downloaded the latest Live image of Solaris from Oracle and burned it using Windows burn utility.
I then boot the DVD using UEFI mode and the GRUB menu displays all the various options to start the Solaris install process.
No matter which option I choose the install hangs on the black screen saying the OS version and the Copyright notice.
The text cursor is not blinking (has it crashed?)
I found this screenshot which shows what I get (note screenshot is from VM)
http://virtuallyfun.superglobalmegacorp.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Oracle-Solaris-11.png
Things I have done:
Flashed the BIOS to latest version
Tried booting solaris from a live usb
Reburned the solaris iso image
Waited an hour to see if it progresses
Things I am going to do:
Use a different ISO utility
Test if Linux can boot from PC
Any ideas?

Thanks for your response,
I should have updated this thread.
Unfortunately Lenovo put a "bug" in their UEFI control that allows only "Windows" and "Red Hat Linux" to boot.
Any other OS with a string in the UEFI identifier that does not match this will not boot.
When I say it is a bug, Lenovo have in the past got a reputation for using Safe boot to limit non Windows OS's from starting on a machine.
Check out the article I read here:

  • Solaris 10 x86 CD install - stops after cd1

    Experienced linux user.
Recent new second hard drive means I can install Solaris.
    Downloaded and burnt CDs (5)
CD1 boots. Used text based installer. Installed to 2nd partition on primary IDE slave drive. Grub to MBR on this drive then plan to either boot changing BIOS boot or chain load from Lilo on master hd MBR.
CD1 install set-up fine(I think I answered right)starts to install software - after approx 15-20%. Stops. Tells me CD1 installation complete and reboots.
However -reboots succesfully to GRUB but no menu or unable to boot kernel using GRUB root and kernel commends.
    CD2 never requested.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    OK -no replys
Have now sorted myself by using DVD download and installing on first patition of second hd. Still need to change boot disk in bios to boot so trying to work round this.
    Solaris seems very good.
Will now try to get speedtouch 330 usb modem working so I ca connect to net.

  • Purchased recovery disk Vista for Satellite A205S4607 install freezes after files are copied

I purchased the recovery disks for Vista for Satellite A205S4607.  I had XP professional installed, but I could not find the drivers needed so I decided just to buy the disks.
I insert the disk, hold down C as it is booting.  The cd runs, and copies over the files, but once it gets to the status bar, the install freezes.  I let it "run" all night and it never came to an install screen.
    Any suggestions?

It sounds like it's likely a hardware failure in the laptop itself. Were you having problems previously?

  • Monitor freezes after grub starts

    Hi,
I'm with the following problem: when I start my computer, in a few seconds after I choose Arch Linux at the grub menu my monitor shows a lot of garbage that does not allow me to see what is going on with my computer.  So I don't even get the command line after I start my computer
It's not a problem with my monitor because I can use the arch installation CD to get to the command line.
I tried to use the second option from the grub menu, arch linux fallback, but I had the exactly same problem.
I have no clue of how I can even start trying to solve this problem. The only thing that I could think of was to use the installation CD, mount /var/ and get the messages.log file. The file can be downloaded from:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=90BUSPQP
Do you have any idea of how I can solve this problem?
    Thanks!

Sorry... it didn't come to me that downloading from megaupload would be such a hassle. Thanks George.Harmony for letting me know.
But the good thing is that the messages from my last boot does not go over the sending limits of this forum:

  • Mac Pro boot option screen freezes after I select the Windows partition

    Hello,
I have a mid-2010 Mac Pro, and I am currently experiencing an issue regarding booting into Windows 7.  Windows 7 64-bit is installed on its own HDD in bay 2 of my Mac Pro.  When I restart my Mac Pro (from OS X), hold the option key, and select the windows HDD, the computer completely freezes and locks up.  I can't move the mouse or use the arrow keys on the keyboard, and the boot select screen completely locks up after selecting the Windows HDD.  This issue does not happen, however, after a cold shutdown and startup.  If I completely shut down my Mac Pro, start it up, hold the option key, and select the Windows HDD, it boots into Windows perfectly fine.  It is only after a reboot from OS X that the boot select screen completely locks up after selecting the Windows HDD.
I have tried everything I can think of, including resetting the PRAM, SMC, repairing disk permissions, etc.  I did also call AppleCare a while back, and the technician on the phone was unable to find a solution.  I have also tried selecting the Windows partition in the Startup Disk pane of system preferences, and that did not work either.  I have also tried utilities such as BootChamp to automate the restart.  Same issue.  Could this be a hardware issue?
    Thank you,
    Robert

    pull OS X and try
Too early to even try F8 - Windows safe boot
Try booting Windows DVD would be first on my list
Every month on 2nd Tuesday all the security updates for Windows patches come out
Clone your Windows hard drive - $20 Paragon Clone OS are just like CCC: bootable, swapable backup copies
Don't try using and it has nothing to do with OS X
It may be something you or Windows installed though or even an update pending on restart.

  • Quick Install Teminates after file selection

Running Version 6.2 of Software for a Palm T|X
It brings up version 1.1.2 of Palm Quick Install.
When I find files I want to install to the Palm, the software teminates with a "Runtime Error" Abnormal termination message and closes.
I recently updated to Office 2007 and the earlier Hotsync software would hang when trying to synchronize, so I went out to Palm to get the latest software. Now the sync occurs fine, but I can't install.
    Ideas?

  • Install_Check_1.6 tool and Solaris 10 5/09 panics after GRUB on Dell T7400

    Hello anybody!
Apparently the Solaris 10 5/09 drop panics after the GRUB menu, for Solaris Installation. Similarly the Install_Check_1.6 Tool for Hardware Compatablity seems to do the same.
    I can't capture the Kernel messages that appear on the screen. It goes too fast. I was able to see however that it points to SUNOS-8000-0G message. The system goes into an automatic reboot and hence if left alone continuously reboots;
Can anybody help on how to capture the kernel error messages during the boot period? My guess is that it may be a device driver compatablity issue, with what? I don't know. I am trying to update the firmware/bios but I doubt if that may change anything.
Does anyone have this problem. Is there a fix for this?
    sam

    All,
I check the BIOS versions and it seems that everything is the latest. Therefore I am basically stuck on T7400 Dell precision system Solaris install.
Does anyone have this similar problem. If I can bypass this device specific errors (I think that is what they are), and load the OS, I might be able to go in and patch it up.
Has anyone experience this with Solaris on T7400?
    Please help

  • Boot freezes after clean install

I installed arch on my new desktop pc a couple of days. It was working fine until I tried to install fglxr. I run into a lot of problems, so I decided to make a new install.
After rebooting for the first time, my new system was working fine, after installing linux-pf and xorg-server and some other packages, I rebooted to make sure to install the catalyst drivers on the new kernel, but I found it freezes with no error after it says:
    Loading linux image...
    Loading intird image...
I've removed quiet kernel parameter and I've tried with debug and verbose, but I don't get any error.
I also (of course) tried to boot in to the "core" kernel, but the problem it's the same.
I've been trying for hours to do all sort of stuff, rebuilding the images, checking the paths to the kernel it's fine, ecc.
I'm really lost, because now my system has only the base stuff and I haven't changed any files :(

Ok, I've been trying to debug this and the behaviour is REALLY weird, I've found that if I load the system directly from grub (I'm using uefi), it's get stuck with no errors after:
    Loading Linux pf kernel ...
    Loading initial ramdisk ...
BUT, if I run refind first, and then I load grub; the system starts. I would have think it's some kind of grub2 bug, but I don't understand how it could work after loading refind. Any clues?

  • I install Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro and freezing after waking up and is impossible restart

I install mountain lion on my macbook pro late 2009 and freezing after waking up and is impossible restart

Restart your mac in Safe Mode by holding down the 'shift' key while it powers up. You'll know if you've entered Safe Mode correctly if you see a progress bar underneath the grey Apple logo screen. Let go of the shift key when you see that, wait for the progess bar to complete then log in.
    After log in, go to
 > System Preferences... Users & Groups and remove everything from the 'Login Items' tab.
If you have any anti-virus software installed (Sophos, F-Secure, VirusBarrier, Mackeeper) uninstall it while in Safe Mode.
Restart your mac normally and test.
    Any improvement?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Bootcamp 'Glowing' windows logo freeze after gfx driver install

Bootcamp 'Glowing' windows logo freeze after gfx driver install
Last week suddenly, after having changed or installed nothing, trying to boot into windows resulted in a frozen glowy window logo 'Starting Windows', which resulted in having to format the windows partition.
Since then I've found out that I can do everything except install gfx drivers.
I've installed firefox, all bootcamp drivers except gfx, swtor (doesn't run of course, but installs fine), quicktime, rebooting is fine after all this...
But as soon as I install any kind of graphics driver and reboot, it freezes at the glowy window logo.
    I have tried;
    The bootcamp included gfx driver
    Windows Update included gfx driver
    Official nVidia latest beta driver
    Official nVidia latest whql driver
    Official nVidia oldest whql driver
    nVidia Cuda driver, both versions
    All give the same result
I have formatted the entire harddrive and written zeros and made the windows partition in a physically different location to make sure it's not a harddrive issue, no luck.
I have tried both Windows 7 x86 and x64 with matching drivers, same results.
Tried booting with no devices attached, no luck.
This all seems to me like a bust gfx card, were it not that under Lion everything works fine, even gaming (WoW).
Techtool Pro's test machine shows no errors.
    My machine is a;
    iMac
    24-inch, Early 2008
Processor  3,06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Geheugen  4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Videokaart  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
    Hardwareoverzicht:
    Modelnaam: iMac
    Modelaanduiding: iMac8,1
    Processornaam: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processorsnelheid: 3,06 GHz
    Aantal processors: 1
    Totale aantal cores: 2
    L2-cache: 6 MB
    Geheugen: 4 GB
    Bussnelheid: 1,07 GHz
    Opstart-ROM-versie: IM81.00C1.B00
    SMC-versie (systeem): 1.30f1

I am running Lion on a Mac Mini Server wherein I placed a Bootcamp partition and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. I've been testing Windows Media Center using a CableCard Tuner installed in a SiliconDust HomeRun box.
All was well until I received a Windows notification of an NVIDIA driver update. After the update, I now freeze at the same point that you do in the Windows startup splash screen.
I rolled back the driver using the Windows control panel associated with the device. Still freezes.
Windows repair does not have a fix. I can't get windows to start in "safe mode" so I can remove the additional apps that NVIDIA installed during the update.
I'm certain the freeze is associated with the NVIDIA driver.

  • Help! Lightroom freezes after installing.

I get this message after trying to create or open a catalog: "An error occured when attemting to change modules." Then Lightroom freezes.
I work on a Mac and have formatted and reinstalled my systemdisk with a qlean install. I had Lightroom installed and have used it for some years. But when installing the programs again I went for the Creative Cloud solution. When I tried to open my previous catalog I got this error message. And after several deinstallings and reinstallings I still get the same message and Lightroom freezes.
    Anyone who can help?

    Hi Ian.
Thank you for answering. But I find no such file in Preferences. I think Lightroom freezes before making the preference file. Other solutions?
    Best wishes,
    Magne

  • How to install webgate on tomcat with solaris 10 AMD 64bits?

    Hi Experts
I need to install a webgate on the webserver tomcat, but i found that installation is not possible because thes is not webgate for tomcat, many people recommended install a reverse proxy with Apache or OHS but i can't find a webgate installer on Solaris 10 AMD 64bits.
Exists that version of webgate? or exist a workaround??
    what is your suggestion??

Choose the Webserver and the WebGate from the OAM support matix.
If OAM does not have WebGate for the platform where you have tomcat installed, if it is an option, you can install a webserver and WebGate on any OAM supported OS and configure Reverse Proxy. WebGate does not need to be on the same server/machine or on same platform.

  • MacBook Pro makes a noise and freezes after I open the lid and awake it from it's sleep after installing Mt. Lion.  How do I fix this?

Eversince I installed Mt. Lion my Macbook Pro has been making a long "beeeeeeep" noise and freezes after I try to awake it from it's sleep by opening the lid.  How do I fix this problem?

Either the license files were not transferred or it has to be relicensed.
Remove and then re-install aperture. On an rMBP this should take only a couple of minutes.

  • [solved] makepkg freeze after installing dependencies

If I try to create a package from the AUR
    makepkg -sfi package-name
seems to freeze after installing the dependencies. It just stops after installing the last dependency and freezes with 65% CPU-Usage.
If I quit makepkg after freeze and run it again, building the package works so the dependencies get correctly installed.
    Note to AUR-Helpers:
    Yaourt -> works
    Packer -> works
    pacaur -> doesn't work
Any Idea what could cause this Problem and how to fix it?

Soooo I've found the guilty after digging through the source of "makepkg"
    source /etc/profile &>/dev/null
causes the problem, if I run this command it freezes, Ctrl+C will kill the whole terminal.
So now I know the source of the Problem, still trying to figure out why this happens...
EDIT: Found it I'm using tdm as login-manager, to start it I've put a script into /etc/profile.d/ and this Script gave back an Error "Invalid TTY".
If you source /etc/profile it can't complete due to this Error.
So it was completely my fault
Thank's for your help, now I have to find another way of starting TDM
    EDIT2:
just put /usr/bin/tdm into ~/.bash_profile and tdm works fine.
Actually this is already in the wiki, don't know why I didn't do that in the first place
