Solaris 11.1 Comstar FC target

Hello,
I have a problem with the comstar as a FC target.
New install of Solaris 11.1
HBA is an Emulex LPe11002
Brocade 5100B switches
2x 10x 3TB NL-SAS disks in raidz2 in pool
It all works, but the speed is unusable slow to the LUN.
iSCSI work and I am able to hit the max of the network so there is no problems with access to access the disks.

I also tried openindiana, the speed was good, but link will die and then capturing stmf debug shows the following when using the Emulex.

It seems no one is using Solaris as a FC target anymore and since we do not have 10Gbe in our lab and some systems cannot communicate via IP to others, FC is the only form of backup.
Can someone please let me know if they are using Solaris as an FC target and perhaps some pointers. On the example above I am trying to clone using VMware from a LUN on an EMC array to the Solaris node. As I mentions the speed is good in OI, but then it seems there is a driver issue.
Cloning in OI from the EMC LUN to the back server:

We have tons of other devices connected to the Brocade 5100B switches. I tried connecting the system to two different switches individually with the same result. We are basically 100% Emulex shop and I only have the one qlt card
I have now tried a brand new Emulex LPe11002 card in a different PCI-E slot, new cable and different FC switch.
I have similar problems with Openindiana and no problems with any of the emc vnx/cx/data domain connected to the same switches or any of the hosts connected to them as the targets using the same LPe10000/LPe11002/LPe12002 cards.
Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Accidentally found this. Some comments.  Unfortuinately, we run Solaris FC as initiators/clients to san target LUNs on NetApp and HP.
1. There were patches in sol 10 for fc cards for bugs, driver and firmware upgrades, fcode/bios which I believe is for san boot only.
I read somewhere these patches for sun/oracle branded FC cards would not be released under Sol 11, have not looked.
Sample patches for Qlogic for Sol 10 are 114874-07 for fcode/bios and 149175-03 for everything else.  Unfortunately we're most Qlogic and only have a couple Emulex in Linux systems.  So is 11.1 really supporting these FC cards now or is the user responsible for downloading drivers and firmware from vendors and installing?.
2.  Have heard when zfs gets to around 80% capacity i/o performance can suffer.  This may have been fixed, been avoiding with quotas.
Then of course if looking for continuous speed don't turn on compression.
3.  Do you have/need the sol 11.1 multi-path package when Solaris has the targets/LUNs?  Are you configured for MPxIO?
pkg info system/storage/multipath-utilities
4. Do you need any kernel changes to /etc/system for performance? Some below are x86.
set sd:sd_max_throttle=64   sparc
set ssd:ssd_max_throttle=64   x86
set maxphys=1048576
set ssd:ssd_io_time=60        x86
5.   Do you need to worry about 4K alignment from client side?
These are all things I worry about but Solaris is an initiator in our environment along with every other platform.
This is old and hopefully resolved by this time!

  • IDM Demo always reports connection failed for Solaris target

I'm setting up the IDM Demo, using the Setup Wizard, using a Solaris 10 container as
the target system. For this demo, I'm using telnet directly as root, which seems to be
the only method available. This succeeds when I run telnet by hand from the IDM host
to the target host. When I test the connection from the wizard, after a long delay, it
always reports that the test connection failed. However, the console log on the target
system shows a successful login. The Details button says that it was looking for `_.)#+(:',
regardless of what I specify as the `Login Prompt'. (I assume this really means the shell
prompt.) I've tried changing the shell prompt by setting PS1 in /.profile and tried suppressing
the banner by creating a /.hushlogin file. Still, the test button always reports that the
    connection failed. What's wrong here?

    ah, familiar territory :)
the string _.)#+(: is something that the adapter uses as a suffix to check whether the previous command executed has changed state or not. The assumption being that _.)#+(: will not be encountered as output of any command on Solaris.
    1. Try connecting as root
    2. Whats your IDM version?
    3. Try this: login as root over putty, and paste whatever strings you get into the adapter configuration page on IM (for say, prompt, etc.)
    4. Tracing the following variables can give you better details regarding where its getting stuck:
    com.waveset.adapter.SolarisResourceAdapter
    com.waveset.adapter.SVIDResourceAdapter
    com.waveset.adapter.ScriptedConnection
    Hope this helps!

  • System Copy Questions R/3 4.6c  + Oracle + Solaris

    dear gurus
goal system copy in R/3 4.6c + Oracle + Solaris
I am doing the db export using R3SETUP (quite slow, I have optimize it using split SRT files method)
    I have questions here..
    when I do export I download latest R3szchk, R3load, R3SETUP, R3check, R3LDCTL
    I download from
Support Packages and Patches - Archive - Additional Components - SAP Kernel -SAP KERNEL 64-BIT - SAP KERNEL 4.6D 64-BIT
    R3szchk, R3load, R3check, R3LDCTL using SAPEXEDB_2364-10001132.SAR (Kernel Part II for Stack Q1-2008)
    R3SETUP using R3SETUP_29-10001132.CAR
    source system : Oracle 8.1.7 - R/3 4.6C - Solaris 9
    my question is
    target system : Oracle 10.0.2 with patches - R/3 4.6C - Solaris 10
later on when i do import to target system, should I use the same kernel when I do the export, or should I use the one from
Support Packages and Patches -> Additional Components -> SAP Kernel -> SAP KERNEL 64-BIT -> SAP KERNEL 4.6D_EX2 64-BIT
    another question
how to speed up the export ? i am stucked with bottle neck in IO, CPU usage is very low, please dont recommend me something related to hardware or disk architecture, if possible recommend me something related to Oracle parameter.
disk IO  using IO stat showing 100% busy and service time 800-1500

Yes - use that one. It uses the Oracle instantclient instead of the old 9.2 client. Make sure you add "-loadprocedure fast" to the load options, this will enable the fastloader.
Make also sure you install all the patchsets and interim patches BEFORE you start the data load.

if you disk I/O subsystem can´t deliver more than you are lost with Oracle parameters.

  • ISCSI Broken after 11.1 Update

    Hi,
I am currently using Solaris 11 as an iSCSI target; however after updating to 11.1 and ZFS 34 My Linux clients stopped booting from the LUN's it seems they can read the MBR and bootloader but that is about all. I've tried adding some new zfs LUN's and the Windows and Linux Initiators can see them but give out I/O errors or freeze up when trying to Initialize or partition the new disks.
    Here are some of the things I've also tried;
Removing all stmf and iscsi configuration e.g. all views, groups,LUN's and targets.
    Uninstalling/Re-install the storage-server package group
Using a File as the LUN
Adding a fresh disk with a brand new ZFS pool and using that as the LUN.
    Changing record sizes on LUN's e.g. 512K,4096K,8096K
There is nothing in the log's to indicate a problem and I'm at my whits end as to what to do next.
Anyone else having issues with this or can recommend a way to troubleshoot the problem.
    Cheers,
    Jarrad.

I'm trying to get some more help to troubleshoot your problems from the team that would know
because your configs are beyond my skills.
If you could provide some error messages that would be helpful.
I could not reproduce this by configuring the basic COMSTAR target/iSCSI initiator configuration.
    See below.

  • How can we clone the Oracle database in new Oracle Home

    Hi,
I would like to clone oracle database into new oracle home. How can we set it using OEM.
I am using 10g grid control. Target db is on solaris
    Thanks
    Naveen

after logging into target database, under maintenance tab, data movement header; ther is "clone database" option. When you click on it; you'll see :
Clone Database uses RMAN to duplicate a database from:
-- An open database in ARCHIVELOG mode, or
-- An open database in NOARCHIVELOG mode (restart required), or
-- A saved working directory from previous cloning
Clone Database performs the following operations:
-- Backup each database file and store it in a working directory
-- Transfer each backup file from source to destination host
-- Restore each backup file to existing destination Oracle Home
-- Recover the cloned database with saved archived log files
-- Open the cloned database with resetlogs
It seems to be for cloning to a different host, but i guess you can chose the same host for source and destination. (I've never used cloning on em by the way :))
But firstly, you should create a new oracle home, you can simply copy your oracle home with a new name (cp -R /oracle/app/oracle/product/10.2.0 /oracle/app/oracle/product/10.2.0.new) or make a new installation.
I suggest you to do this cloning with CLI. You should take a full backup with RMAN, copy the oracle home, create a new initNEWSID.ora file and nomount the database, restore (or simply copy) controlfiles, restore database (with set newname commands), recover database, open resetlogs.

  • VM Import Win XP EA VDI3 fail and cannot find file

    Guys
Have struck a snag in the VM pool sitting on a Solaris 10 U6 ZFS iSCSI target.
Have configured storage pool and start import of desktop.
We see the data transmission b/w iscsi initiator and target, but cannot confirm the location of the imported VM on target.
However the cacao.0 log shows import as successful.
    Proceed to start VM.
VirtualBox cannot mount IDE disk (vdi image file).
    Any sugestions ?
    Jeremy.

    Preface:
We follow the standards as demanded by course documentation given by us in training sessions for Sun LS:
    1. Tail the logs
    2. View the VB interface for activity and other details (but do not play, and same if is VMware)
    3. Always work from the web interface.
OK, so the word "start" means click with left mouse button on the "Start" button on the Virtual Machine screen in VDI (accessed via port 1800/1801).
(Aplos but have spent days on this and found this to be the most grievous issue as the question will come of not me but trainees)
Let's get back to the original issue - where are the files placed on the iSCSI storage ?
How can we confirm on the Storage device the files are written ?
Why does the cacao log file indicate all activities are OK but the VM started after import fails to locate the vdi file (attempts to make ISCSI mount - hence the requirement for looking at the Virtual Box interface).
Is the iSCSI target limited to OpenSolaris / OpenStorage or can the 2510 be used for a small deployment of <100 VM's ?
    Jeremy.

  • Boot from pxe

I have a PXE target on fedora... Is it possible to install Solaris-10 through this PXE target, if yes, please provide the steps.
    Thanks in advance.

    booty wrote:

if yes, please provide the steps.Ah... That's a lot harder. The media comes with scripts that do the work on Solaris, not Linux.
There are several DHCP/jumpstart guides on the internet, including some for ISC dhcp servers (which is what any Linux distribution is likely to use). Configuring that properly is about 85% of the work. The rest of it is getting the netboot image file served by a tftp server and getting the NFS configurations set is the rest.
I haven't worked with that in a while, so I don't have any type of checklist that I am sure works.
    Good luck!

  • Best practice deployment - Solaris source and target

    Hi,
What is the recommended deployment guide for an ODI instance under Solaris. I have a sybase source and an Oracle target, both of which are on Solaris. I plan to put my ODI master and work repository on another Oracle DB on the solaris target machine. Now where does my agent sit, since my source and target are solaris ?? I plan to administer ODI from my windows clients but :-
Where and how do I configure my agent so that I can schedule scenarios. It would make most sense to be able to run the agent on my target solaris machine , is this possible ?? If not then do I have to have a separate windows server that is used to run the agent and schedule the jobs ??
    Thanks for any assistance,
    Brandon

thanks for the reply. I cant find anything in the installation guide about Solaris specifically but it mentions to follow the instructions for "Installing the Java Agent on iSeries and AS/400" where the download o/s is not supported.
So it seems I just need make some directories on the solaris host and to manually copy files into s these directories and as long as java sdk/runtime is there I can use the shell scripts (eg. agentshceduler.sh ) to start and stop the agent.
So my question I guess is since the os supported downloads are only windows and Linux, where do I copy the files from, the Linux ones ?? Is it right to say that since these are java programs I should be able to copy the Linux ones and use them under Solaris ??
I dont have the Solaris environment at hand to test this just yet.... hence the questions....
    thanks again

  • Targeted C compilation for Solaris 8

    Hi
I'm running Solaris 10. I need to build a C application - a socket based server daemon - which will run on Solaris 8, AFAICT on different h/w platforms, though all sparc I think.
So I assume I need to configure my compile/link for the target platform.
From the docs it looks like I could specify the code name for a given machine with the target option, eg -xtarget=ultra3i - which would then build for an Ultra sparc IIIi. But that sounds like a pain, esp as the target servers are located around the world, and no one person knows what they all are.
Or can I use the 'generic' target? Any issues with building a networking application on 10, to deliver on 8 using that target?
Any help (or definitive url <g>) would be greatly appreciated.

    Chris

Or can I use the 'generic' target? Any issues with building a networking application on 10, to deliver on 8 using that target? How generic is generic? Generic Sun4U and Generic Sun4D are different platforms so even if it is generic is it generic enough?
The easiest thing to do would be to look for a lowest common denominator for each platform, do the build on that and then test it out on the rest.
Compiling is usually forward compatible and not backwards compatible.
