Solaris 11 Express - upgrade netatalk

Hello,
what is the safest way / procedure tu go from netatalk 2.1.x to 2.2.x ?
Would a new boot environment prevent mishaps ?
Thanks

Ok,
here is a short how to:
install like here:
http://marcoschuh.de/wp/?p=839
I compiled without avahi support
I had to
svcadm disable network/dns/multicast:default
svcadm disable system/avahi-bridge-dsd:default
and re-enable avahi at some point
AFP config files:
/usr/local/etc/netatalk/
afpd.conf
- -tcp -noddp -uamlist uams_dhx2_passwd.so -nosavepassword
the original entry of uams_dhx2.so is a symbolic link which doesn't seem to work...
AppleVolumes.default
add the option "options:tm" for Time Machine in Mac OS X Lion
~ cnidscheme:dbd options:usedots,invisibledots,upriv perm:0770
/folder "TimeMachine" allow:user cnidscheme:dbd options:tm

/etc/init.d/netatalk stop
/etc/init.d/netatalk start

  • Upgrade from Solaris 11 Express to Solaris 11 Release (11/11); Guide MIA?

Would there be an easy way to upgrade from Solaris 11 Express to Solaris 11 Release (11/11)? The FAQ for Solaris 11 Release has the following hopeful text:
Can I upgrade to Oracle Solaris 11 from Oracle Solaris 11 Express or Oracle Solaris 11 Early Adopter?
Yes. Customers can upgrade to Oracle Solaris 11 by using the package management tools. Refer to the Oracle Solaris 11
Transition Guide (http://www.oracle.com/pls/topic/lookup?ctx=E23824&id=MF JAI) for more information
But that link comes up with an error page 404, "topic not found".
The one transition guide I can find is:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E23824_01/html/E21799/index.html
But that covers Solaris 10 jumpstart, not Solaris 11 Express or Early Adopter.
    The Solaris 11 documentation at:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/documentation/index.html
Also seems to mention only Solaris 10, not 11 Express or Early Adopter.
I have already downloaded the full repo for Solaris 11 Release, and the live installer, but I'm hoping it's something as simple as pointing the ips manager to a new repository, or just loading the full repo I already have as a local source. I would also like to keep the dtrace and sun studio set up I have now in the Express version, without reinstalling them on a new release version on bare metal.
If it keeps the features of the express version while ironing out a few kinks (gdm authentication bug, etc.), that would rock.
    Many Thanks,
    Gordon

Alan, Thank You, that worked with no problem at all. 11 Express was already using the correct repository, and only required a pkg command update, then other updates.
    So here's what I'm guessing:
    1. The Oracle Solaris maintained repository for Express and Early Adopter are now the same as Release, but they do require an updated pkg executable and pkg update command.
    2. The second form of the command mentioned in the update guide:
    # pkg set-publisher -g http://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release
    -G http://internal.co.com/solaris solaris
is for using a local copy of the repository within our lan or vpn wan.
    3. Updates should be fairly regular now that Solaris 11 is in release version.
I think the new hash (SHA 256) fried some of our old gdm settings for our users, so we're creating new user accounts, and migrating the older accounts. We don't have too many, so it's not a problem for us. But that brings up another point:
    4. The graphical user manager in Express is now gone, and user and group management are now done with command line interface.
That's fine with me as well. I always use ssh to connect to the machine and then run the screen command for administration. The graphical user manager was always kludgy in Express, and I couldn't get it to work correctly anyway.
This is great stuff so far. Well done.

    Thanks in advance.

It was some time ago but I recall getting a similar message when I did the update. If I remember correctly, I had some old OpenSolaris packages installed which I had to remove before I could get the Solaris 11 update to complete. I suspect the old OpenSolaris packages had requirements which were in conflict with the requirements of the newer Solaris 11 release and as a result pkg couldn't find a way to do the update while meeting all of the requirements imposed upon it.

  • MDNS/Bonjour port 0 service registration broken on Solaris 11 Express

I'm using Solaris 11 Express on x86-64, and found a pretty bad bug with registering mDNS/Bonjour services. Most service registration works fine, but registering a service that uses port 0 does not work. It claims to work, but the service never gets registered, and can't be browsed for.
It's easy to reproduce: in one window, run
    $ dns-sd -B test.tcp
You should see 'Browsing for test.tcp', and no services found.
    Then, in another window, run
    $ dns-sd -R solaris test.tcp local. 0
to register a test.tcp service on port 0. It seems to succeed, but the first window doesn't show the new service.
Now, kill the 'dns-sd -R' registration process with ctrl-c, and run
    $ dns-sd -R solaris test.tcp local. 1
This time, the first window will show the service. Registering on port 1 works fine, but port 0 does not.
Port 0 service registration works fine on every other OS, and many services use port 0 by convention if they aren't advertising an actual service. For example, netatalk can register a device-info.tcp service to mimic a certain Mac model (so your Solaris server shows up with an Xserve icon). This "service" uses port 0, and doesn't work on S11 Express unless the source is changed to a non-zero port.
Can someone test this out on Solaris 11 EA and other versions, to see if it's been fixed or not?
    Edited by: 887058 on Sep 22, 2011 11:57 PM

It is registering fine with port 0. You can test by trying to register the same service on another host in the local network
with the same service name and port. You will see the service name automatically renamed.
    For example:
    root@estrada:~# dns-sd -R solaris test.tcp local. 0
    Registering Service solaris._test._tcp.local. port 0
Got a reply for solaris._test._tcp.local.: Name now registered and active
    root@testz:~# dns-sd -R solaris test.tcp local. 0
    Registering Service solaris._test._tcp.local. port 0
Got a reply for solaris (2)._test._tcp.local.: Name now registered and active
    ^C
You can also query and see the SRV record for it:
    # dns-sd -Q solaris._test._tcp.local. SRV
Timestamp A/R Flags if Name T C Rdata
    23:38:58.949 Add 2 2 solaris._test._tcp.local. 33 1 21 bytes: 00 00 00 00 00 00 07 65 73 74 72 61 64 61 05 6C 6F 63 61 6C 00
It appears to me the service is not seen in the service browse call. These port 0 registrations are used to indicate the service
is not available on the host so this could be by design. I have tested the same on Mac OS X 10.6.8 and observe the same
    results.

  • Solaris 10 express developer ed. dvd checksum error

    Hi,
I downloaded the solaris 10 express developer ed. dvd. I used Sun Download manager for the download. the file e had checksum error. Hence the DVD contains checksum error. Is there any way we could correct the download without the need re-download the entire file. Other files ending a,b,c,e dont have this problem. Am i the only one getting this problem or is it a known issue?
    with regards,
    ashwin

Sorry there is no real way to solve this other than downloading the last segment of the file.

  • Using Solaris 11 Express for a multiprocessor CAD/CAM x86-64 system.

I'm considering using Solaris 11 Express as the OS for a multiprocessor Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing custom built x86-64 system for my machine shop business. I would like clarification of the license in this situation.
Would I be allowed to use Solaris 11 for free under the open-source license, or would I have to purchase a commercial license? Would I have to pay for program updates? Does just the Oracle Solaris Premier Subscription for Solaris 11 require payment rather than the actual software as well? Would I be required to purchase an Oracle Solaris Premier Subscription to use Solaris 11 in my situation, or can I purchase the Oracle Solaris Premier Subscription at a later date.
I have a lot of respect the open-source concept, and I would only use Solaris while keeping it's license intact. So the answers to these questions are very important factors affecting my decision regarding whether or not my company will start to use Solaris.

I'm afraid you'll have to contact Oracle directly to clarify what applies in your situation.

  • Solaris 9 404 Upgrade to Solaris 10 on Ultra 10

I tried to do a Solaris 9 404 Upgrade to Solaris 10 on my Ultra 10 with SVM mirrored system drives and it wouldn't get past the Upgrade Profile Initialisation section. It stayed there for a long time, maybe 20 minutes and finally came up with a Failed screen. It compalined about a missing device name, said it couldn't find root or boot and mentioned something about filesystem backups.
Is an upgrade from tis configuration really supported?
Ultra 10 440MHZ 768MB RAM. Dual 73GB SCSI mirrored with SVM system drives. One 120GB IDE media drive. There is only a main and a swap partition on the system drive ie everything is in /.
Am currently backing up the data I want from the system drives prior to attempting an initial install but I'd obviously prefer to upgrade the system and keep the SVM filesystems as they are.
    Nick ([email protected])

I would break your mirror and do a liveupgrade on the available mirror. Then boot that disk.

  • Deal-breakers for real use of Solaris 11 Express

I run Solaris 10 U9 for my home 12TB NAS box - based on Supermicro H8SSL-i2 motherboard (ServerWorks HT1000 Chipset and Dual-port Broadcom BCM5704C) and their 8-port SATA2 PCI-X card (AOC-SAT2-MV8). It's a great (but aging) platform and a rock solid OS with the unbeatable ZFS volume manager/filesystem.
However, despite my willingness to run Solaris 11 Express in this role, I can't because of these deal-breakers:
    1) Lack of a full-featured installer that allows me to lay out or preserve existing partitions the way I want. Making /var a separate file system is a must. Ideally, I'd be able to run multiple versions of Solaris on the same box by customizing grub, and use my ZPOOLs on either Solaris 10 or 11 Express while I learn the new OS.
    2) Lack of support for the Broadcom BCM5704C dual-port gigabit NIC (and others), which work wonderfully under Solaris 10, but are badly broken under Solaris 11 Express. I know I could disable the on-board Broadcom NICs and go buy an Intel card - but why the need for this? Won't there be a fix for Broadcom NICs?
    3) Lack of support for modern, generic, server-class motherboards and PCI-e multi-port SATA/SAS cards. I wonder about the future for Solaris without support for modern, affordable x64 server hardware.
Maybe I'm missing the point and Solaris 11 Express is only intended to be run as a virtual machine under VBox or VMware. But it would sure be nice to be able to run it on my real hardware - even if it is just a small hobbyist rig. Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Mike

In Solaris 11, you get a separate /var by default. If you update from Solaris 11 Express to Solaris 11, this transition doesn't happen automatically. If you decide to tackle it on your own, you need to be sure that it is done in a way that beadm, pkg, and other consumers of libbe will handle properly. I would recommend something along the lines of the following. This is untested and may break your system - prove it out somewhere unimportant first.
Do the work in a new boot environment so you reduce the likelihood that you will break things in an unrecoverable way.
    # beadm create sepvar
    # beadm mount sepvar /mntFigure out the name of the root dataset of the new boot environment, then create a var dataset as a child of that.
    # rootds=$(zfs list -H -o name /mnt)
    # zfs create -o mountpoint=/var -o canmount=noauto $rootds/varMount this new /var and migrate data
    # mkdir /tmp/newvar
    # zfs mount -o mountpoint=/tmp/newvar $rootds/var
    # cd /mnt/var
    # mv $(ls -A) /tmp/newvarUnmount, remount
    # umount /tmp/newvar
    # beadm unmount sepvar
    # beadm mount sepvar /mntAt this point /mnt/var should be a separate dataset than /mnt. The contents of /mnt/var should look just like the contents of /var, aside from transient data that has changed while you were doing this. Assuming that is the case, you should be ready to activate and boot the new boot environment.
    # beadm activate sepvar
    # beadm unmount sepvar
    # init 6

  • Is it possible to use wi-fi networks without NWAM in Solaris 11 Express?

    Hello,
I have disabled NWAM in Solaris 11 Express and now I'm trying to set up a wi-fi connection with dladm and ipadm only.
I reached a point where all seems well configured and I can even ping my on dhcp leased address.
But I can't ping the default gateway, for example.
I get something such as "Network unreachable".
This is in spite of "netstat -rn" shows a reasonable route.
    Thanks in advance,
    Carlos.

When I have it disabled I'm not being able to ping other addresses but my own.
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if nwam is doing something else under the hood when it's enabled.

  • Symbolic lins dont work in solaris 11 express

    Can't create a link
when i try to create the link i got the following message
ln: cannot create dir: Operation not applicable?

The OS install will have multiple symbolic links for it to even work. For examle, /usr/bin is just a soft link to /bin and there are probably 50 or more softlinks in /etc in a new install. Thus your claim that "symbolic links don't work in Solaris 11 Express" seems mildly overstated.
    To say the least.
Some details could potentially aide in someone helping you to fix your issues.

  • Xauth extract in solaris 11 express

    Hi all,
I've just migrated from OpenSolaris 2009.11 to Solaris 11 Express. One of the problems I face is X11 forwarding.
I have solved quite a number of problems related to authenticating X11 connections, but I'm still stuck with this one.
Now I have a Solaris 11 Express box that I VNC into (using the standard Xvnc). I have a CentOS 5 zone running on this same machine. I need to export my MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE into this zone, so I can forward X11 from the CentOS zone to the globalzone (Solaris 11) client.
    I tried:
    xauth extract - $DISPLAY
    but I got:
"No matches found, authority file "-" not written"
I tried all these display variables, but none worked:
    localhost:0
    localhost:1
    localhost:10
    sol11host:0
    sol11host:1
    sol11host:10
I even tried their IP addresses: 127.0.0.1:<n> and <LAN IP address>:<n> but they didn't work as well.
However, when I manually do an "xauth list" on the globalzone, and after ssh-ing into the CentOS non-global zone, "xauth add <globalzone IP>:<n> MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 <key taken from xauth list at globalzone>" works.
Not sure if this has anything to do with me "VNC-ing" into the globalzone from another machine. I don't seem to face any x11 authentication problem if I'm physically on my Solaris 11 box, but VNC-ing to the box gives me this problem.
    Help?
    Regards,
    Daniel
Edited by: daniel on Aug 20, 2011 2:45 AM

    Hi Abrante,
Thanks for replying. I did an 'xauth list' again after the 'xauth generate', and saw that two more cookies were created:
    daniel@opensolaris11:~# xauth generate localhost:1
    daniel@opensolaris11:~# xauth list
#ffff#<...>e302e302e31#:1 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 cc94253d585f... ## This was the original, before 'xauth generate'
    opensolaris11:1 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 7844cf...
    localhost:1 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 7844cf...
Both cookie values for opensolaris11:1 and localhost:1 are the same.

Since you ran 'su root' you will still have quite a great deal of the environment setup for 'daniel', hence using 'xauth generate' at that point will probably overwrite the xauth for 'daniel'.
I'm a bit uncertain as to what exactly you want to do, but i guess you could try 'su - root' or simply try to avoid using xauth generate..
.7/M.Yes, I guess you're right. I still have most of my environment as 'daniel' though I already su-ed to root. Probably this is the problem.
I'll try 'su - root' as you suggest.
What I'm trying to achieve is VNC from my laptop to my Solaris 11 box (i.e. the globalzone), and within my VNC session, 'ssh -X' to my CentOS zone (also within the same Solaris 11 box) and run X apps from there.
Means I need to forward X11 from my CentOS zone, to my Solaris 11 globalzone and see it on the VNC session on my laptop.

  • Disable ipv6 in solaris 11 express (2010.11)

Is there a way to disable ipv6 in Solaris 11 Express?
I can unlplumb inet6 interfaces but it created again after reboot.
    # ifconfig v1 inet6 unplumb
    # ifconfig lo0 inet6 unplumb
    # ipadm show-if
    IFNAME STATE CURRENT PERSISTENT
    lo0 ok -m-v------4- ---
    v1 ok bm--------4- -46
Is there a way to get that change persistent?
And what is there right way to get rid of ndpd daemon?
Whenever I disable svc:/network/routing/ndp:default it gets back online by 'routeadm -u' after reboot.

I know how to create addresses. I have no problem with ip4.
Addresses created and persistent across reboot.
The only problem that there is also bunch of ipv6 interfaces brought up at reboot and NDP daemon.
    For now I found workaround:
    1. make lo0 controlled by ipadm:
    # ipadm delete-if lo0
    # ipadm create-if lo0
    # ipadm create-addr -T static -a 127.0.0.1/8 lo0/v4
    2. Remove lines with "_family=26" from /etc/ipadm/ipadm.conf
    3. reboot.
    That's all I wanted.
    # ipadm show-if
    IFNAME STATE CURRENT PERSISTENT
    lo0 ok -m-v------4- -4-
    v1 ok bm--------4- -4-
    # routeadm -u
    # routeadm | grep ndp
    disabled svc:/network/routing/ndp:default
If anyone know how to do the same without editing ipadm.conf please tell.
