Otherways, when i try to log on with maintenance password, all files on the system are in Read only attributes
so ===>Try to help to solve this problem thank u

Solaris 2.6 will run on that platform,
though it won't take advantage of the hardware's full capabilities.
Solaris 2.6 is a 32bit environment. The hardware is 64bit-capable.
There are some additional "gotchas":
Which release of Solaris 2.6? The early ones have issues with the L2 cache sizes on some of the cpu modules.
How big is the L2 cache on those modules, 4MB or 8MB ?
If it is 8MB each cpu, then you will need to set temporary conditions in OBP for the OS,
then reset them for every boot and reboot until you apply patches after Solaris is installed.
You will also need to check that you're at a more recent version of the OBP firmware.
Begin by reviewing the contents of SRDB document 20149.
It is available from Sun directly, to Service Contract customers.
There are plenty of references to it out via Google.
Solaris 7, 8, 9, and 10 do not have those issues on your E6500, and they're all natively 64bit on that platform.

  • Partitions problems installing solaris 8 2/04 on Sun v240

    Hi all,
I'm trying to install Solaris 8 on a v240 sun machine. The machine is new, and I think it comes with Solaris 10 installation files pre-loaded. I don't want them, I need Solaris 8.
I'm starting installation booting from cd to use my Solaris 8 cds. During initial installation steps the system promts following question:
Searching for a location to place the Solaris installation software...
Searching disks for upgradeable Solaris root devices...
The following root devices were found to be upgradeable:
    Release Root Device
    Solaris 10 c1t0d0s0
Swap slices are usually erased at each reboot, so it is preferable
to place the Solaris installation software on a disk slice labeled swap.
The disk slice, c1t0d0s1, labeled as swap,
is large enough to hold the Solaris installation software.
NOTE: All information on the selected swap slice will be erased.
Can c1t0d0s1 be used for the Solaris installation software [y,n,?,q] y
And I need to choose one to go on. Then, when I reach the step to set disk partioning up it tells me that I have to do it using cylinders. I try it, but the slice that is being used in the first step (see above) to store installation files is named as swap and I cannot edit it.
How can I proceed? I want to edit my partioning during installation process as I always have done when installed Solaris before.
What is goin on? any help?
    Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Since this is a fresh installation, you might consider starting it all over again.
You may have made some initial selections while prompted at the beginning of the install process, that accidentally omitted essential system files.
As for that device path and the disk? It's pointing to an external non-Sun peripheral that's connected to the rear external SCSI port. That drive has some bad sectors. ( I wouldn't trust a new OS on those sectors until you fixed them.)
The errors are not calling out either of the two possible internal drives.

  • LONG FILE NAME SUPPORT IN SOLARIS 10 INTEL BASED

    Hi,
I am facing the problem in solaris in which, i found that whenever I am copying any file directly from windows based PC to solaris the file name become automataically squizzes to 8+3 [dos file support]. In this case I am facing the problem in which I have to again rename file as actual then only it works properly.
i.e the actual file name "abcdefghij.iope" is converted to "abcdefg_.iop"
Can you confirm is there any setting to avoid this in solaris.

  • Oracle iPlanet Web Server 7.0.9 Patch on Solaris 8 as upgrade from Sun One

We have an application that we are moving from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10, but the process for doing this is slow due to the complex nature of the architecture (Perl, J2EE on JRun, WLS, etc). This means that the application will have some instances on Solaris 8 and some on Solaris 10 for the next few months. We wish to try to bring the non-OS infrastructure up to the same versions of code to assist in this.
Now, I noticed in the release notes that Solaris 8 is no longer supported in 7.0.9 but was in 7.0.8. Is there anything inherent in this or was it just that no testing was done? I know that the official position of the "web tier" is that Solaris 8 is now "deprecated". I ask because it tells me if I can live with the risk of going to 7.0.9 on all environments - as the application code is more aware of this than its core OS - or whether I need to leave 7.0.8 on Solaris 8 and do 7.0.9 on Solaris 10. I'm not asking for support, but a question on whether there is a known issue or not.
    regards
    Colin

Thank you. I'll keep the Solaris 8 boxes on v7.0.8 then.
My main worry was not the code itself but the changes in installation, packaging, branding changes, default directories (e.g. /opt/oracle rather than /opt/sun), etc...... . If I am going to kill off Solaris 8 in a few months it isn't a big problem.

  • Hard disk problem after installing Solaris 10 u5 on a Sun Ultra 24

    Hi.
After receiving a new Sun Ultra 24, shipped with Solaris 10 u4, the first thing I did was installing Solaris 10 u5. X wouldn't start but that was not a big problem and installed it in text mode. Installation went fine but, when the system starts, a single beep is heard and after some seconds some warning message appear on the console, before the "Hostname: ..." message, informing that some read operation on my hard disk had timed out and were aborted. The system then starts up normally. The only other anomaly is that the diagnostic partition in unbootable.
I ran the hard disk tests from the tools and drivers CDs and all of the tests were passed. Solaris 10 u4 was working normally so I'm wondering if this may be a bug.
    Thanks for your help,
    Enrico.

Thanks anyway, I discovered what the problem was: a bug in Solaris 10 u5:

  • Porting Solaris 10 from Fujitsu to Sun V490

    Hi
Does anyone know how to take an existing copy of Solaris (and environment ) running on a Fujitsu box to
restore on a Sun V490 Hardware.
How can you get this to work ?
basically I have a Fujitsu server runnig Solaris 10 and I want to copy everthing from this Server and make it run on a Sun V490
with miniumum effort and avoiding a re-install ?
    Any ideas/help is much appreciated.
    Thank You
    Arun

    Hi Arun.
Unfortunately it's not a minimum effort job. First and foremost the physical characteristics of the systems are different so if you 'lifted and shifted' the OS you'll be missing the packages and patches needed to get the OS working on the V490. The OS is very unlikely to boot. Adding the necessary packages and patches would also be time consuming.
As the OS should contain no application specific data it's much quicker and easier to re-install the OS on the V490 and just migrate the application(s).
The migration is certainly possible but will require a certain degree of knowledge about the current config and what is needed on the V490.

    Steve

  • Solaris 7 system upgrade from Sun 60?

We need to replace a Sun 60 on a large system and want to upgrade to a faster machine but we MUST stay with Solaris 7. We started looking at the 1000, 1500 and 2500 but they seem not to support Solaris 7. Can anyone tell me the fastest workstation that supports Solaris 7.
    Edited by: shadow83 on Oct 21, 2008 7:49 AM

You will likely be limited to the Ultra-80 / E420R / Netra 1405 series of systems.
They all use the same systemboard and can have as many as four 450MHz US-II processors.
You can install as much as 4GB of RAM to them as well.
The U80/E420R/N1405 systems were all discontinued in 2002.
They will therefore be rather inexpensive to buy as used machines from web sites such as Ebay.
All newer models will need a newer version of Solaris.
Solaris 7 just wouldn't know how to make the newer hardware function.
    It was disontinued in 2003.

  • How to configure network printer on solaris 10 intel based

how to configure the network printer in solaris 10
    like hp laserjet printer/printers,

    Very very easy.
Go to the print manager . (printmgr I believe or in the launch menu under preferences)
    select add a network printer
Fill out the info. I find that the hpijs printer driver works better then the suggested foomatic on my hp 4000s. I could not print pdfs otherwise.
Other things to know is the protocol should be BSD (at least it works for me). And add the port to the destination so 192.168.0.1:9600 for example (for hp).
thats about it. To have it show up correctly in JDS you should probably add it to the printer list under the launch->preferences->printer preferences.

In general, if you are having a problem compiling Open Source code with Sun Studio, you need to try the community support portal for that code.
Start with the Iperf home page
    [http://starplane.org/tooldoc/iperf/]
Often, Open Source code has been tried only with gcc, and won't build with other compilers without some effort.
If nobody else has tried using Sun Studio, you might need to do some debugging of configuration scripts and even source code.
The Iperf home page provides an address where you can report such problems.
In addition, older versions of autoconf and libtool don't work with Sun Studio, and can generate invalid makefiles. Be sure you have the current versions of both, if they are used by Iperf.

  • Sun Cluster 3.1 64 bit support  for Solaris 10

    Hi:
I have some questions when migrate SC 3.1 from solaris 9 to solaris 10.
    1) Does Clutster 3.1 for solaris 10 support 64 bit?
I have develop own resource type which is compiled with 64 bit mode, while cluster admin program is 32 bit based. E.g. /usr/cluster/bin/scrgadm
Will that cause any problem? For instance: 32 bit lib and 64 bit lib have the same name libscha.so will be loaded by 32 bit scrgadm and 64 bit my own developped resource type program.
    2) Can I download a Cluster 3.1 install-pkg for solaris 10, 64 bit supported., which means all admin files like scrgadm are 64 bit based.
Or only ONE Cluster 3.1 version for solaris 10 is deliveried by SUN?
    Thanks in advance!
    BRs
    //rdctahu

    Hi,
    Comments on your 2 questions:
    1) Yes. IIRC, SC31 for S10 actually supports ONLY 64 bit. To be clear, this means
Solaris has to be booted in 64 bit mode, but 32 bit applications would run just
    fine.
As for your RT being 64 bit, and scrgadm being 32 bit, no problem.
    2) See (1). You are good.
    Go for it.

  • New to Sun and Solaris

Hello all. I am currently a Sr. System Administrator right now for IBM AIX and SCO UNIX OS systems and I am wanting to start learning the Sun Solaris OS and getting familiar with that in hopes to become a System Administrator for those OS as well. I know zero about Solaris or Sun right now other than what I have read about.
Anybody have suggestions on how I start learning Sun Solaris? I see Solaris 10 is a free download for x86 platforms. I was going to install that on my laptop as a dual boot for Solaris 10 and my current laptop Windows XP OS. Would that be a good start in learning Sun Solaris system? Would anybody recommend taking the training courses that Sun provides or would that be a waste of time? Most of the AIX and SCO UNIX OS I come to know and master is from learning on my own and later on taking some advanced admin courses in that.
My company is thinking changing to Sun Solaris OS and servers to replace the SCO UNIX servers so I just wanted to know any suggestions on how to get familiar with where I can get to the point of install, setup, admin Solaris servers. Thanks!

    hi " mmitguy "
    while I can't comment on
in hopes to become a System Administrator for those OS as well
part but I would like to respond on dual boot part, as I've installed Solaris 10 with Win XP recently on a single HD of my Dell 9150 Desktop. First I backed up all my data & tried to resize (using Partition Magic 8) existing Win XP partition (there was only one) & create new partition but it failed & I had to re-install Win XP.
So I would recommend first to make sure that u have Win XP installation disk & driver / utility installation disk available. And after backing all ur data from ur laptop re-install Win XP & while re-installing create 2 partitions. Install Win XP & install display / graphics card, modem, network etc drivers.
Installing Solaris 10: I downloaded Solaris 10 11/06 from Sun & burnt a DVD & ran into lots of problems so i posted this:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5137821&tstart=15
After that, some one from this same forum suggested to install Solaris Express Developers Edition 02/07 instead. ( http://developers.sun.com/solaris/downloads/solexpdev/download.jsp )
I re-installed Solaris, this time Dev Edition 02/07 and that was very, very simple compare to Solaris 10 11/06.
    Good Luck!

  • Problem with a DDI Device driver for Solaris 8 and 9 on a Sun-Blade-1500

The problem has to do with dma allocated memory and the little-endian format.
When I copy blocks bigger than 256 bytes to the dma memory, using a uiomove() or bcopy(), the data after the first 32 bytes is swapped around over 8 bytes.
The bcopy from a driver (stack) buffer into the dma virtual memory has the same affect.
So it has to do with the kernel dma allocated memory and the endianess.
When I set the byte order to big-endian inside the ddi_device_acc_attr the data seems to be alright, also with bigger transfer sizes.
My device however needs the little-endian format.
I have the same the same device driver running without any errors on a Sun Blade-150 Solaris 8 for a long time now.

I am having the similar problem identified in this thread.
    OS: Sun Solaris 10 01/06
    Hardware: Sun Blade 2500
    PCI Memory card.
Problem: When driver moves more then 40 bytes via PIO from a PCI device memory card, the long words are swapped starting at 40 byte transfer size and greater.
    device memory description:

    The user application does a read call, which goes to xxread. xxread calls physio( xxstrategy, bp, dev, B_READ, xxminphys, uio );
In xxstrategy the transfer is done using
    ddi_mem_rep_get8(ucb->ucb_sdram_accHndl,
    (uint8_t*) kaddr,
    (uint8_t*) raddr,
    (size_t) bp->b_resid),

PCI Device memory is loaded with incrementing address (8bit), 0,1,2... This is confirmed using a PCI Bus Analyzer.
A read of 36 bytes or less returns:

A read of 40 bytes returns:
    07 06 05 04 03 02 01 00 ...
    If I peek 1 byte at a time using ddi_get8(ucb->ucb_sdram_accHndl, ...) I get
    00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07
Why are the long words swapped starting at 40 byte transfer size and greater?

  • Need help building boost_1_37_0 on Solaris 10 U6 with Sun Studio 12

    Hi,
Ok, please bear with me here. I've tried many different sets of instructions, and haven't had success with any of them (including the ones at http://blogs.sun.com/sga/category/Boost).
    Operating System: Solaris 10 x86 U6
Compiler: Sun Studio 12 (SUNCC version 5.9)
    Boost version: 1.37.0
The ONLY part of boost that I need is regex. I've never built external libraries before and building boost on Solaris seems a rather daunting task. So, could someone please explain, as clearly as possible, how do I build the boost::regex library using SUNCC?
I know this is a very broad topic, but since I haven't had any luck with any existing instructions that google turns up, alas I am here.
Thanks in advance if someone can help me,
    ~Slow
Note: I don't need any special options, any special, non-standard install paths, nothing. Just a straight, stock, boost install.

First, be sure you have the current patches for Sun Studio 12. You can get them here:
    http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/patches/
Please install the current C++ compiler patch, the C compiler patch, and the common back-end compiler patch.
You should then be able to build BOOST 1.37.0. The only problem I know of has been filed as CR 6767881, which results in an incorrect complaint about a constructor not being accessible. But I don't think that one affects regex.
If you running into some other problem after patching the compiler, please post enough detail that we can investigate it.
Questions about how to build just a portion of BOOST are probably best addressed to a BOOST forum.

  • Upgrade from Solaris 8 SPARC with Sun cluster 3.1u3 to Solaris 10 SPARC

    Dear All,
We are planning an upgrade of the OS from Solaris 8 SPARC to Solaris 10 SPARC on a two-node active-standby clustered system.
The current major software we have on the Solaris 8 system are:
    1: Sun Cluster 3.1u3
    2: Oracle 9i 9.2.0.8
3: Veritas File System Vxfs v4.0
    4: Sun Solaris 8 2/04 SPARC
Any pointers as to what sequence and how the upgrade should be done?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Ray

yes I know it can be quite complicated and complex, but Sun provided us with a detailed documentation, at least in our case Solaris 9 to 10 it was very helpful.
You might get better help in the cluster forum http://forums.sun.com/forum.jspa?forumID=842
