Solaris 2.6 install problems

Yes, I know 2.6 is an antique, but without going into a lot of boring details, it's what I'm stuck with.
Anyway, I have been trying to load 2.6 to an Ultra10, specifically to start fresh and re-partition the drive for my own evil purposes. I am using the 2.6 cdrom.
I am able to indentify the system, etc., with no problems until this:
Executing SolStart preinstall phase...
Executing begin script "install_begin"...
Begin script install_begin execution completed
Exiting (caught signal 8)
Type suninstall to restart
When I type suninstall, I loop back to the beginning, indentify the system and time zone, and then back to this same place. What's up?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Phil

Thanks a lot...!!!You made our day....it worked for us!!!
Rohini.
Hi,
We had the same problem, on solaris 8 trying to install the enterprise version of 9iAS, it stopped at 30% and in the log file was the OutOfMemory exception you mentioned.
The solution we found was to give the installer (OUI) more memory!!! The JRE that executes the OUI was configured to use a maximum of 32MB for the memory allocation pool (see $ORACLE_BASE/jre/1.1.8/jre_config.txt about -mx option) which doesn't seem to be enough!
This parameter can be modified for OUI in the following file:
$ORACLE_BASE/oui/oraparam.ini
change the following parameter:
JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=" -mx32m"
we found that
JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=" -mx64m"
was enough, but you have to be patient! We got other errors but we got as far as the configuration wizards.
hope this helps, Takeshi.

  • Solaris 10 x86 install problems allocating resources

I have a problem when I first install. I get two devices, NON ACPI and ACPI both using IRQ 3. After the conflict resolves, during some page instances of the boot configuration assistant, I lose my keyboard functionality.
This is currently set to IRQ 1. I was wondering if this was correct based on x86 platform specific resources. I am also unsure as to what port I need to use.
Has anyone ever tried anything different other than IRQ 1?

I think u should do one thing.
    1) Find out your name of your NIC card. ( Probably if u installed XP and seen which NIC is that)
    2) Download drivers for your NIC by giving something like " download network drivers for solaris for ' your NIC' ".
    3) If fortunately if u get drivers, copy it on ur solaris machine and install it by reading readme file of the drivers.
    4) In readme file u will also find NIC name.
    5) Then run command " ifconfig (card name e.g. bcme0) plumb
    6) Now run "ifconfig -a" if u find ur card name there except le0 then congrats u have done it.
    7) Move ahead with network config.
Note : - I am not sure but i think if ur machine is old then u will not get drivers for it.
Tell me if u get success........

    Hi
I have an M4000 configured with a Solaris 8 container.
I am using a flash archive from an Ultra 60.

It just sits at the WARNING doing nothing.
I connected to the container console using "zlogin -C f714clone" but this just gives me a blank screen with no output and unable to do anything.
I used a different archive from a V120 and had no problems.
Is there something I need to configure for a Ultra 60.
    Thanks in advance.
    Steve.

I got this to work. It seems, for whatever reason, that it doesn't like the '-u' flag for an Ultra 60. I installed using '-p' instead and it was fine, it even came up with the new IP I had assinged.

    Please help, thank you

Did you get any help with these problems? I am worried now beacuse my install files are nothing like these sizes. I unzipped a v1-a to 128 Kb.
Did you find some isntructions? Could you forward them to me because I cannot find any. Thank you.
    Mike
    Hello,
I'm trying to create the 3 iso files from the Solaris
8 Intel download and am having
a problem with the iso formed file sizes. Two of the
    iso files, the "install.iso"
and "v1.iso" are larger than 700 meg. (which is the
limit on my CDs) They are
944 meg and 729 meg respectively.
The sun intructions say to create the iso files from
the zipped files I downloads after
unzipping them. Well, combining 3 files each into
each iso file for the CD image is
    creating these large iso images.
    Is this the right procedure?
Also, do I even need the install.iso image as I see a
lot of talk on the newsgroups
about starting a fresh Solaris 8 install with CD 1
    ("v1.iso")?
    Thank you!

  • Solaris 8 intel install problem

When my Solaris 8 install gets to the spot where it asks for the language to use (0-9, english is 0, which I want), anything I hit on my keyboard sends bogus VT codes to the screen. Earlier in the install process (when it asks for solaris interactive vs custom for example), my keyboard works fine, I can choose 1 or 2 there.
Has anyone else seen the problem? I've tried multiple keyboards, and they all do the same thing.

Sounds like the dell keyboard problem:

    Hi,
I am now trying to install Solaris to my other machine... and hoping it will work. This is a K6-2 PC with 192MB RAM and 2 x 8GB harddisks.
The first disk is occupied by Trustix and Slackware (Both are Linux), and I have the entire second dirve for Solaris. Then when I boot from DCA, my machine will keep rebooting itself. IF I boot from CD, it will say cannot find drive for installing Solaris. I have used LBA/CHS/Normal mode for my harddisk - none of them work. Any idea?
    Please help.
    Thanks.

I can't force solaris to boot in 64 bit mode. That is correct since the miniroot is a 32 bit kernel. There are couple of
options. First, since you mention that its a RAID device, are there tools to partition that RAID disk into smaller chunks ? Typically this is feasible and then that RAID device will appear as 2 disks to the kernel. If you have another disk to install to and you want the entire device to be visible under Solaris, format is is the right way to do it. You need add an GPT (EFI label). If format is core dumping then please file a bug or check if you need a patch to address it.

  • Solaris 8 Install Problem - Partition(s)

First, I am a relative "newbie" when it comes to SUN Solaris and System Adminstration, though I know enough UNIX to be dangerous (read "get me into trouble" - hahaha).
I tried to do an "upgrade" to the O/S (2.7) on my Ultra 5, but when doing an "initial install", the system will only allow me to set the partitions/slices manually at the cylinder level. Any attempts to do so have failed, as I keep getting an "overlapping cylinder" error message, regardless of how I try to setup root, /usr, etc. The Solaris 8 O/S setup swap as follows:
    Starting - 3275 Size - 1110
FYI, I was trying to do the install using the Solaris 8 CDROM, Solaris build date 2/02.
Overall, I appear to be having a lot of issues with the Seagate Medalist ST34321A (4.1 Gbyte) drive that came with my Sun Ultra 5. The drive appears to work correctly, but an attempts to "wipe out" the drive (reformat) have not met with success.
Any suggestions anyone can provide regarding the install problem would be appreciated.

If you are trying to Upgrade to Sol 8 it is strongly suggested that you do not use the Installation CD. Use CD 1 of 2 with a boot cdrom. You will have to answer the sysid questions and then should get prompted for Initial Install or Upgrade. If you do not get the Upgrade prompt then there is a problem with your original Sol 7 system. Things like nfs mounts in vfstab, links to /var/sadm/patch, pkg or install/contents.
An Upgrade should not be asking you to lay out filesystems. It should use your existing ones.

  • Fresh solaris 10 x86 install patch update problems 119060-17 ...

Just yesterday, i installed a fresh Solaris 10 x86 onto some pc hardware. After getting solaris installed and issues with my network card, i downloaded and installed the free version of the update manager 1.0.x. Next, i proceeded to update all the general patches for the solaris 10 system. I started with the command 'pprosvc -i' from a terminal. It then proceeded to download and validate a bunch of patches successfully until it hit the following 3 patches:
    119060-17 ---- X11 6.6.2_x86: Xsun patch
    122213-10 ---- GNOME 2.6.0_x86: GNOME Desktop Patch
    122912-02 ---- SunOS 5.10_x86: Apache 1.3 Patch
All 3 failed some kind of validation and then crashed the pprosvc program, at which point it exited with the following error:
    122912-02 cannot be validated
    119060-17 cannot be validated
    122912-02 cannot be validated
Unexpected Failure: java.lang.Throwable: ERROR: Failed to validate the digital signature(s).
I also tried to use the GUI Update Manager to update, hoping the problem was isolated to pprosvc, but that problem was also in the GUI with a similar error message:
Error occurred...The detailed error message is: Unexpected Failure: java.lang.Throwable: ERROR: Failed to validate the digitial signature(s)
Anyone know why Sun's update patch process is so troublesome?
    Getting Tired of Solaris Updates...
I should mention that this is the free solaris 10 x86 install and i don't have a service contract with Sun. If this problem persists, i don't think i'll get one, as i see only further problems after buying one.
    tired and confused

    Hi,
    There is an issue with this that is currently being investigated. There is another thread that may shed some light on what is happening here;
    http://forum.sun.com/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=316
Thread title is : Sun UC, Digitally Signed Patches Using New Verisign Certificates
In the short-term please ensure that the patch mentioned in it is installed.
To quote part of mentioned thread above:
"Once the Sun Update Connection client software is upgraded with patch 121118-06 (SPARC) or 121119-06 (x86/x64) or later revisions normal behavior will resume. "
    If this fails to resolve your problem, would you be kind enough to post the output of the following command for analysis please;
    # showrev -p | egrep -e '121454|121119|120336|121082|121564|122232|119789'

  • Solaris 10 install problem (requested image to big to fit into memory)

I have just downloaded the iso images and burned to disk. When I go to install I get the message (Requested image to big to fit into memory Error 28) I have 1.5GB so I don't understand the problem. Thanks in advance
It took a long time for me to figure out, but the answer is disable in BIOS memory hole at 15M to 16M. This solved the install problem with Open Solaris and quite a few more such as not being able to install Linux Zenwalk 5.0 or openSUSE 10.3. Their are others also problems I have had with Linux or UNIX that this took care of. JGZ
Edited by: jgz on Mar 8, 2008 9:13 PM

    Hi,
I had been able to solve the Error 28 issue that in my case was really related to a corrupted boot image:
    1. I went in the path /a/platform/i86pc
    2. rm boot_archive.
    3. sync
    4. reboot
At this point the OS will notice the absence of the boot_image and it will regenerate it.
At the time of this operation the CD with solaris 10 was inserted in the CDROM.
When the system restarted it was able to load the OS properly.
Please use these information at your own risk. I do not accept any liablity.
    Cheers

  • Solaris 10 Companion Disk Install Problem

    Hi All,
Trying to add a few things to a Solaris 10 (Sparc) install, from the
Software Compainion disk. When I go through the install, either GUI
or texted based it will fail in the end. If you look at the last part
of the text below you can you can see I have selected the packages,
then agreed to the license, next it acts like it going to install but
    stop and reports nothing installed.
Next you can select 4 to be "Done" or 1-3 to view log.
    Log states following:
    /var/sadm/install/logs/Desktop-Environment_install.B02081004 does not
    exist
I only selected one of the logs to view that time through, but the
other installs would have the same error, something like:
    /var/sadm/install/logs/X-Applications_install.B02080955 does not exist
    /var/sadm/install/logs/Application-Utilities_install.B02080955 does not
    exist
I have plenty of disk space, 12GB free on /opt and 14GB free on / and
    16GB on /usr.
I have the boxed set of Solaris 10 disk, but I have even downloaded
another disk image thinking my disk was some how bad, still same
    results.
Any ideas on what is going on?
    Thanks
    Joe

    Hi Joe,
If you cd into the cdrom from command line:
    # cd /cdrom/cdrom0
    # ls
you should see some kind of structure to how the the packages are laid out on the disk.
Use pkgadd on one or more package:
    # pkgadd -d . <package_name>
You will get more output this way.

  • Solaris 10 x_86 install Dell 4600

Install problem with Solaris 10 x_86 and Dell Dimension 4600. When I accept the network settings for the install, I get an error. I have checked the /var/sadm/system/logs/sysidtool.log file and it appears that the install program cannot find the primary network adaptor. I know it works as SLES 8 is installed at the moment on the Dell. Do I need another driver ?
    Regards
    Stephen Gray

Ok, I replaced the failing NIC. Now 193.0.0.2 uses its iprb0 network adapter that is attached on the Motherboard and 193.0.0.1 has a new Realtek NIC. I downloaded the drivers and followed the instructions to install them.
According to me, it all went fine but still the machines can't ping each other.
I took a laptop and unplugged the crossover cable from *.1 . When I give my laptop the IP address 193.0.0.1 (instead of the Dell machine) and connect it to *.2 using the crossover cable, then these two can ping each other.
When I give my laptop the IP address *.2 and conntect it to the *.1 Dell machine using the crossover cable, then these two also can ping each other.
But when I connect the two Dell machines with the cross over cable: nothing.
I followed your advice to change the /kernel/drv/iprb.conf of *.2 . Now I also did the same for *.1 ; according to the man-pages, I can add the same line to /kernel/drv/rtls.conf .
The strange thing is that when I reboot them, then *.2 gives me the message:
    iprb0: No MII link detected
and *.1 is so stubborn to stay in Half Duplex:
    rtls0: link up -- 100Mbps Half Duplex
I thought that "No MII link detected" means that there is no cable connected, but the cable is plugged in (*). Maybe it appears because *.2 is booted up faster than *.1 ?
What might I have done wrong? It really baffles me that pinging from or to the laptop does not give any problem, but among each other there is no reaction at all.
    Greetings,
    Wim
(*) it is a cross over cable and the test with the laptop proves that it works, no?

I was hoping someone could help me with a problem I've been having with Solaris 10. Im currently trying to install Solaris 10 U4 onto a HP Proliant DL320 G5. The problem is Im booting off the 1st installation CD and choosing Solaris Interactve install. Im then prompted to complete the system indentfication which i do. It starts the configuring section and freezes at 1%. The entire system hangs.
Has anyone else had these problems installing Solaris U4 on a DL320?
    Kind Regards
    Anthony

Seems the HP Proliant DL320 G5 is not supported by any verson of Solaris 9 or 10, Had a chat with HP and that seems to be the case.
I will need to purchase another SATA Controller for my Hard drives (something cheap and cheerful) that does support Solaris 10 and install it into the DL320 and hope it installs that way.
Just thought id give anyone that was looking at my post an update
    Cheers
    Anthony
