Solaris 8 -2/02 Intel - CDE Dispaly problem...

I have an IBM Thinkpad 760EL, Trident Cyber 9385 ( 1MB ) video chip. Everything installed okay, and I selected the choice in kdmconfig for the laptop. One problem... from a reboot, or a cold start, it displays fine. But when I logout, or try to choose "Remote Login" from the login screen, the display has vertical lines all across it.
Has anyone else run into this?

I think most posts indicate that power management is enabled in the bios. Also, boot from software cd 1 of 2. If you continue to have problems, download, create and use the DCA diskette to start the installation and troubleshoot what may have been wrong later. if you have a large (20-30gb) disk, search the forum for largedisk or the like - that is a known and well discussed issue also. Search on the current error also.
good luck

  • Solaris 8 4/01 Intel Instalation/Boot Problems

I am TRYING to install the Solaris 8 for Intel and i am having several problems.
I managed to solve some of them but now i am stuck.
I am running a PII with a an Adapetc 2940 and a scsi disk.
I am using interactive instalation one software cd 1.
I am creating 2 partions one X86 boot with 10 Mb and another one of solaris type with 8500 Mb.
in the second one i created a slice for root and another one for swap.
The problem is after all the instalation completes the system wont boot !
    Any ideia why ?
I created a dos boot partion and it boots fine.
How can i create a boot disk ?
How can access the file system a just created to check ?
How can i rewrite the mbr ?
I am using one disk and for solaris only, am i creating the right partion schema ?
    Please help.
    Thanks in Advance,

    Howdy,
I am please to see someone with ethics responding to some basic questions of a solaris install problem on an intel platform. I have been working with solaris on sparc for a while, not I am trying the Intel side of the house.
I am having a similar problem as you mentioned. I have a Compaq Deskpro system with an IDE 2gb disk to install Solaris 8 4/01 on. I get all the way through the instructions to #27 on the DOC CD to the reboot of the system and the pulling out of the Installation CD. It tells me that I will need to wait for the system to reset then pull out the CD before the sytem completes its Memory test and HW detection.
I think I am removing the CD when this is being done, but the only thing I am seeing is a compaq logo and an hourglass forever....the screen seems to hang there forever.
Should I leave the installation CD in the drive longer?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Solaris 10 install on Intel Centrino laptop

    Greetings all:
Can someone tell me if it's possible to install Solaris 10 to a Intel Pentium M 730 processor with i915PM/GM/GMS chipset? I tried to install Linux FC4, but the network/wireless and USB won't work, so I'm thinking in installing Solaris 10 to my laptop. Is there any doc about installing to laptop (any FAQ or how-to?). I'm new to this so please bear with me.

Sorry, assumed you needed an even amount of equal dimm's, but this is not the case.

    Hi there,
i am trying to install the Solaris 10 on HP intel Xeon server. but i get error message during the installaion configuration that hard disk not found. while i had win2003 on it before and drives are okay.
i get this error message when i do text based installation.
Graphix based wont even show up, dont know why.
the image i have downloaded for solaris10 is for x86 32 bit version.
i tried different CD of solaris10 and different server too, same error message. does that have any thing to do with raid configuration or there is something else that i am missing.
any suggestion or help will be appreciated.

Whether hard disk is connected by means of scsi card or raid card or SATA or simply IDE? Since we need to check it out whether proper driver is there for those things. If it is RAID TECHNOLOGY, i suggest you cant install. please check the HP SITE for supported OS.

    hi ,
plase let me know how to solve this..if any further information is required plz give me ur personal mail id so that i can mail u..all those indetail..
    Problem:
We noted that after we transport the iViews from development EP to production EP, some of the iViews could not be display. When we click on the link i.e. employee address in ESS, the page was blank with a hour glass running at the center. In addition we notice there is some warning message on the bottom left corner of the browser which I attached the print screen below.
However, there some iViews which is able to display in the production EP, i.e. "Organization Chart" iView. For these iViews, we publish it in SE80 under internet service. As for those error iViews, we did not publish it in SE80 under internet service as it gives an error message which indicates that the object could not be found. We try to clarify this by doing the same in the development R/3 (SE80) which it gives us the same message that the object could not be found. However the development iViews are able to display without having any error. We suspect that we need to publish these error iViews somewhere in R/3 before we can see it in portal.
To test, we accessed the production webgui at . Url leads to a login page where we key in our production R/3 user id and password. After login, it navigates to the page which same as the error iViews page.(blank page with hour glass running)
    Thanks,

    Hi,
The users to access the iViews need some autorizations, however i tested with SAP_ALL still it does not display. The connection should be okie because it prompt me for password when i try to access the iView. After i enter the username and password, the iView just seem like hanging there with the hour glass running.
Those iView that are not able to display are already in URL mode.
    Thanks

  • Solaris 2.8 on Intel Installation Problem

When attempting to install Solaris on Intel 2.8, everythin g goes fine and the files are copied, but it fails at the end with the following message:
    Customizing system files
    - Mount Point table (etc/vfstab)
    - Network host address (etc/hosts)
Error: Could not copy file (tmp/root/etc/openwin/etc/devdata/SUNWaccel/monitors/pnp/edidgen.vda) to
    (/a/etc/openwin/etc/devdata/SUNWaccel/monitors/pnp/edidgen.vda)
Error: Unable to copy a temporary file to it's final location
I have tried this time and time again, should I disable PNP in my Bios or what could be the cause of my problems?
    Thanks in advance

Looks like the failure that you are having is when the install program is trying to copy the PNP moniter spec from the /tmp location to the /etc location. May be for some reason the edidgen.vda never got created in the first place.
Can you please mention the version of Solaris 8 you are installing and if you have a plug and play monitor.

  • Solaris 8 Installation on Intel - PROBLEM

    Hi,
    I am trying to load Solaris 8 on Intel machine , 810 motherboard , 128MB SDRAM , 20GB HDD
but whenever I try to load with CD-1 I have a problem like Webstart Installation 3.00 start and when he ask me language , after that message comes no hardisk foung and it stop immediately at # prompt.
Whenevr I start with CD-2 , he ask me for Interactive / Jump Start , I choose Interactive , it start laoding KERNAL and machine automatically reboot , again reinstall , at that same point machine reboot.
Tell me what to do , I cant go ahead , I want to load Solaris 8 , and see ..
    HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
    Regards,
    Mahen.

I think the problem source is the BIOS ACPI Power Manager, many of motherboards ACPI always let the system auto-reboot during loaded the OS kernel.
I had tried to install Windows2000 and Solaris8 10/01 on Intel 810 MB, the system always rebooted again and again, I suppose that may be some bugs on 810 chipset !!
Try to reconfigure the BIOS ACPI function, such disable it.
But, I'm not sure that is work for your case.....

I had similar problems several months ago. I suspect this happens when host pc does not have floppy drive(or bios somehow misreports it) as it was in my case. Solaris 8 seems to work fine in the same environment, so I keep using it for now. Possible workaround might be to use DCA from Solaris 8: Installation of Sol9 started just fine after I entered Sol8 DCA and asked it to boot from Sol9 CD.
Hope this problem will be fixed in subsequent Sol9 releases.

  • Solaris 8 on IBM Thinkpad T20 - Display Problem!

    Hi Forum,
I have Solaris 8 07/01 installed on this IBM Tninkpad T20. The problem has been the display. It has S3 Savage IX 8. I need help to resolve this issue. Here's what I have done.
After installation of OS, latest patches were applied. Installed XFree86 without any problems. Configured and generated a /XF86Config.new file from /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -configure. The XF86Config.new was copied as /XFConfig and /etc/X11/XFConfig. This file looks good detecting the Savage driver with this sentence in it: "Savage(0): VESA VBE DDC Support". I understand that this adapter has been picked up with correct configuration.
When I run XFree86, it just displays a grey screen with the mouse cursor in the middle of the screen, and no other action after that. No cursor movement or any response from the keyboard. Leading to cold boot of the system. in short, XFree86, did'nt quite work as it should have.
As an alternative, I have installed these two packages and patches for extended XSun support, which uses this existing XFree86 drivers. I downloaded and "pkgadd"ed the SUNWxf86u & SUNWxf86r and the patches, 109401-10 and 108653-30. Afterwhich, I did find additional adapters showing up in "kdmconfig". I did find Savage IX and other drivers which were'nt found earlier. Selected this driver, with various montitor types in the next scrreen, was unsuccessful in displaying the screen. I have tried the same with VESA and VGA compatible drivers too and different monitor types. Not getting the right display. I have to try the Xig patch. But the existing XFree86 and XSun should still do the work. Any Suggestions & help appreciated.

Regarding T20 laptops with Solaris8. See www.egroups.com Solaris on Intel archive. You can see that Solaris 8 can boot from this kind of hardware. One solution would be:
-Install from the network. Jumpstart installation if your model of laptop has a builtin NIC.
-See more details about this on Jumpstart installation.

  • Installation of solaris 10 on x86 intel dual core or core 2 duo

    hi all,
while i am installing solaris 10 on x86 machine which has 250 GB hard disk and 4 GB RAM with intel dual core processor
the first steps are going cool i.e. in the first cd it asks about partitions and it is accepting the partitions and also the partitions sizes what i am giving are:
    / -- 30 GB, /etc -- 6GB, /home -- 6GB, /usr -- 6GB, /export/home -- 100GB, /var -- 9GB, swap-- 10GB
and after the first CD got installed it asks for restart the system and when it
boots then i am getting the booting option and i selected it as solaris and one more thing to tell is it has already Windows XP pro+sp2
after selecting it boots with solaris and
    after few seconds it restarts
please tell me if any body knows that is there any compatability issue with the processor that solaris is not going to support for intel core 2 duo or dual core processors
    looking for the good reply

OK, so what are the options if we run the HCL check and come up with some incompatibilities??
I have Solaris 11/06 (from DVD media) installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 530 (dual boot with XP). After the grub menu appears, and selecting 'Solaris', it takes about 3 minutes to get to a command line. I get a few errors at that time, such as:
file in / differ from the boot archive: /etc/path_to_inst
cannot find /etc/devices/mdi_ib_cache: no such file
I tried running 'svcadm clear system/boot-archive' and it seems to attempt to boot into a graphical CDE, but I just end up with an unintelligible multi-colored display, and need to power off.
I've checked the HCL and found some incompatibilities, but I don't know how to work-around these?
Running the Hardware compatibility test came up with the following:
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Communication
    Conexant
    HSF 56k Data/Fax Modem
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Network
    Intel Corporation
    *82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection*
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Multimedia
    Intel Corporation
    HD Audio Controller
Can I simply disable the Modem and the HD audio in windows XP device manager, then reboot to Solaris, to get around these two (I tried this already)??
For the network card driver incompatibility, there is a Sun doc that says the workaround is to run: update_drv -a -i '"pci8086,1064"' iprb, but when I run this command at the initial Solaris command line, or try to edit any file for that matter, I get the error "read-only file system" Seems I have my hands tied in maintenance mode.
    Thanks.

  • HELP!! -- Solaris 8 10/01 (Intel) Installation Hangs My PC!!

I downloaded the Solaris 8 for x86 yesterday and burned them into CDs.
I have the following hardware configuration.
    - Intel i815E mainboard
    - Intel PIII 733
    - KingMax 256M 133MHz
    - Maxtor 30G hard disk
    - Acer 50X CDROM
The inistallation initially gave me a warning.
WARNING: ACPI Table not in Reclaim Memory
And it gave more warning during the installation process:
Resource Conflicting -- Both devices are added
    The conflicting devices are:
    - PNP0C01
    - ISY0050
Unfortunately, I don't know what they are. :(
However, these are not the whole story. The installer went ahead to
let me fdisk my 30G hard disk.
I accepted the "Solaris Default" and answered Y to the question "Can
swap slice start at the beginning of the disk?". Immediately, the
system hangs there but the keyboard is responsive that I can type
    anything I want.
In addition, I use the 512M as swap as suggested by the installer.
Can anyone help me with this situation? I have tried installing this
version of Solaris for several times but with no luck. :S
Any insights are highly appreciated! Thanks!
    - Peter

Try this workaround for your problem and let me know the outcomes.
Solaris bootstrap uses Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)
for device configuration and MP interrupt routing.
    Try to disable your ACPI.
    Steps to follow:
    1) Use either eeprom(1M):
    # eeprom acpi-user-options=0x2
    ( OR )
    * Modify the Device Configuration Assistant (DCA) boot floppy.
Manually edit the /boot/solaris/bootenv.rc to add:
    setprop acpi-user-options 0x2
In this method is applicable for at the time of Solaris 8 installation.
DCA for Solaris 8 10/01 download it from this URL:
    http://soldc.sun.com/support/drivers/dca_diskettes/
The ACPI conflicts problem is not fixed and is resolved by disabling ACPI.
In the example you gave, while it is annoying, it probably does no harm. In
some cases it causes duplicate devices to show up, like two floppy or IDE
drives - neither of which work properly. Disabling ACPI is the safest way
to insure there will be no problems if this message shows up.
    2) Reboot the System.
    Hope it helps.

  • Solaris 9 / GNOME 2.0 / SunPCI II problem

Hello. I have Solaris 9 on a SunBlade 100 with SunPCI II (running Windows 2000 Professional). Both OSes have the latest patches. When running under Gnome 2.0 the SunPCI/Windows requires multiple clicks of the mouse to affect any controls. For example, launching IE from the taskbar ought to take one click and it does this when running under CDE. But under Gnome I have to double, triple, quadruple click before it will launch. I cannot open the start menu because one-click does not affect it, but double-click opens and then immediately closes it. Other controls have similar problems. Native Solaris/Gnome apps are not affected - only Windows/SunPCI. Has anyone run into this strange problem, and if so what is the solution? Thanks.

Personally I think JDS3 is a bit awkward and
certainly not as nice to use as Gnome2. I was
disappointed to see the CDE apps menu has disappeared
too, I had to figure out where certain apps are on
the HDD, something I never thought to do in the past.
Specifically I was looking for SMC, which I
    eventually found in /usr/sadm/bin/smc.
I was under the impression from Sun's own
documentation, that Gnome would be the replacement
for CDE, I figured they'd included it with latter
Solaris9 installs as a stop gap. I also noticed that
    when I installed Solaris10, I saw a message box
mention KDE a few times so I expected to see an
option for KDE as well. Dunno if it's hidden away
somewhere but I'd sure like to know what it was all
about.I wonder whether one can get rid of some of the JDS stuff and just use the GNOME part. I never understood why so many of the desktop environments try to immitate Windows even to the extent that there is a launch (aka start) button.

  • Solaris 11.1 on Supermicro X10SAT mobo problems:

When I try to run liveUSB Solaris 11.1 on the motherboard Supermicro X10SAT with an Intel Xeon E3-1245v3 it does not work well. The "Device Driver Utility" reports three problems:

Can I solve these problems in some way? The X10SAT has intel i210 and i217 network interfaces. Can I download drivers from somewhere? And, Solaris also reports errors during boot up of the USB live stick, dmesg shows:

The i210 interface is detected as "8086,1533" but how would I make it work? What is SRU 11 and 12?
As "rukbat" said, I have posted some additional details in another thread. If someone helps me on this one, I will clean this up and write down the solution to help the Solaris community.

  • Solaris 7 Software Installation on x86 System Problem

Experienced error message "disk not found" just prior to Solaris execution of final installation process. This was during Interactive installation. Also recieved "cannot determine boot device name". Could not use set env command in order to set the boot device. It is telling us that there is no boot device set up. Need some information/commands that will enable me to get over this problem and complete the software installation.
This could very well be a simple fix, I just don't have the knowledge bas eto effect it. Please contact at [email protected] or 540 657-6585.
    Thanks

I hope this can help you. I recently posted the similar question on the development group and got help from 'agood214' which I think is the best answer.
(All credit should be to agood214)
Okay, here's the followup and results for my install method.
    1. It worked
    2. Partition magic and Boot magic are not needed to make this happen.
    3. Partition and boot magic do not recognize the solaris partitions on the second master IDE. In fact they give an error ( #110) and offer to "fix" the dirve which will corrupt the install of Solaris.
    4. I had scanned the newsgroups and found a utiliuty called XOSL - Extended Operating System Loader at http://www.xosl.org it works like and absolute charm!
=== Other installation notes - mostly my machine is not on the Hardware Comaptibility List but I figured I'd give it a try. System is a K6-III 450 Mhz ( not on HCL) Iwill XA-100A Plus motherboard ( not on HCL ) Sblive PCI valueboard ( not on HCL ) Siig high speed serial board - PCI (not on HCL) Diamond 56k PCI modem ( not on HCL ) I had to remove the modem and serial card as well as dispable PnP in the BIOS.
    Then everything loaded pretty normal.
    ====
agood214 was using two physical drivers, but I tried on one 13 GB Hard Drive with 4 partitions (Solaris7, Win98, Win2000, data-partition) and working beautifully. In my case, I didn't have to disable anything in the BIOS to get them work. Just read though the manual in XOSL if you want to use this boot-loader and it is very easy to install. NOTE: you can not use 'instant boot' in XOSL to boot with the combination of WIN-OS and Solaris. Besides it, everything is prefect.

Good catch. I would never have though of that since I eagerly anticipate each chance I get for a clean install.
