Solaris 8 4/01 Intel Instalation/Boot Problems

I am TRYING to install the Solaris 8 for Intel and i am having several problems.
I managed to solve some of them but now i am stuck.
I am running a PII with a an Adapetc 2940 and a scsi disk.
I am using interactive instalation one software cd 1.
I am creating 2 partions one X86 boot with 10 Mb and another one of solaris type with 8500 Mb.
in the second one i created a slice for root and another one for swap.
The problem is after all the instalation completes the system wont boot !
Any ideia why ?
I created a dos boot partion and it boots fine.
How can i create a boot disk ?
How can access the file system a just created to check ?
How can i rewrite the mbr ?
I am using one disk and for solaris only, am i creating the right partion schema ?
Please help.
Thanks in Advance,
Pedro Oliveira

Howdy,
I am please to see someone with ethics responding to some basic questions of a solaris install problem on an intel platform. I have been working with solaris on sparc for a while, not I am trying the Intel side of the house.
I am having a similar problem as you mentioned. I have a Compaq Deskpro system with an IDE 2gb disk to install Solaris 8 4/01 on. I get all the way through the instructions to #27 on the DOC CD to the reboot of the system and the pulling out of the Installation CD. It tells me that I will need to wait for the system to reset then pull out the CD before the sytem completes its Memory test and HW detection.
I think I am removing the CD when this is being done, but the only thing I am seeing is a compaq logo and an hourglass forever....the screen seems to hang there forever.
Should I leave the installation CD in the drive longer?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dennis

  • Solaris install/ boot problems please help

recently had to use solaris at work and liked it. So thought of getting it solaris 10 on intel box at home to learn it. I have never worked on a unix based OS before. When I installed the OS first time, the desktop would not start up, this was because of network setup. Reinstalled worked. After a week due to some problem i had to reinstall OS, installation went fine and but when i reboot i get this errror.

i have been trying to reinstall with many option like formatting with windows fdisk, linux installer everything as I saw somehwre that disk needs low level format.
I have googled but could not find any reason.
When I try to format disk using windows this is the information gatherd

install type 3 (tried all options)
entire disk for boot and solaris
    accepted almost all parameters.
downloaded again , burned a DVD still same.
Any help will be highly apreciated, as I have been trying out everything I could find, also I really want to learn to use solaris

Looks like a boot disk problem.Try doing a lowlevel format with the respective tools.(Ex.If seagate harddisk download seatools) No try to install the OS.If you are facing the same problem try installing windows and see.The error looks like a bad blocks in the disk.

  • Solaris 2.6 intel microchannel boot disk

Where is it? The link in the Solaris 2.6 install docs is broken?
Please help. I have 3 Microchannel machines I need to install Solaris on.
    Thanks,
    Richard

System With a Micro Channel Architecture
The Solaris 2.6 (Intel Platform Edition) distribution CD is accompanied by a boot diskette supporting most systems, including those with ISA, EISA, VLB, and PCI buses. If you have a system with a Micro Channel Architecture (MCA), you may download a boot diskette from Sun's Solaris 2.6 Web site:
     http://access1.sun.com/solaris/distrib2.6
Full instructions for downloading and creating the MCA diskette are on the Web site. You may also obtain the diskette through your Sun Software Support Provider.
You must make certain that the boot diskette is not write-protected because configuration information is saved to the diskette during the initial boot.

  • Installation problems with Solaris 8 on Intel

    Howdy,
I am having some problem with my installation of Solaris 8 on Intel. I am installing the system on a P133 (Asus TX97 motherboard). When I first start the installation and perform the system scan I get the following error:
The PnP ISA: IDE Controller programable device was unable to be programmed.
This could be caused by two possible reasons:
    - Lack of resouces available
    - There is a conflict with the following already-existing device: 8086,7111 - Bus Mastering IDE Controller
When I bring up the View/Edit device settings and I scroll to the IDE controller there is an ! mark beside the PCI IDE controller. The controler is specifying: Bus 0, device: 1, function: 1 port 1F0-1F7, 3F6, 170-177, 376, E000-E00F, 0 IRQ 14, 15
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this conflict? I tried removing the PCI IDE interface and then installing a ISA IDE interfact (for IRQ: 14, IRQ 15 automatically put a PnP IDE controller there). This seemed to resolve the conflict but then I received a: No Bootable devices have been found.
If anyone can help out with how to resolve the conflict, or what the No Bootable Devices have been found error it would be greatly appreciated.
Currently there is a partition set up with NT on it, but I wish to basically get rid of everything on the HD and install Solaris on it. FYI, when I check the HD's in NT it mentions I/0: 1F0-1F7 IRQ 14 and also I/O 170-177 IRQ 15.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
    Regards,
    S.

When I close down Solais in the CDE I am taken back to the logon screen
and I turn the PC off.Don't do that. If you simply turn off the PC, the OS has no chance to
write back cached / modified disk data back to the HDD - this is also the
reason why solaris has to check the filesystems on the next boot and apparently
    has to repair filesystem defects.
What you have to do is shutdown the machine, before you can power it off.
Login as user "root" and use the command
    init 5
    or
    halt
"init 5" will shutdown system services, by executing commands from
/etc/rc0.d/K* with argument "stop". Then it'll sync all modified disk blocks to
the HDD, kills all remaining processes and unmounts all filesystems. In this
state it's safe to power off the machine!
"halt" is a quick-and-dirty shutdown. It does not stop system services (the
/etc/rc0.d/K* commands are not run). But, it syncs all modified disk blocks
to the HDD, kills all processes and unmounts all filesystems. "init 5" is preferred,
especially if you have services like a database server running on the machine,
which needs to be cleanly shutdown. On the other hand, with a default solaris
installation and no extra services, a simple "halt" should be OK.
Btw. if multiple users are logged in on the machine, you should also have a look
at the shutdown(1M) command. "shutdown" sends warnings to the logged in
users that the machine is about to be shut down, ...

  • Solaris 8 on Intel STL2 server board - installation problem

    Hi,
I try to install Solaris 8 (4/01) on Intel STL2 server board (P III 866 MHz, SDRAM 512 ECC Reg, Adaptec AIC7899 Dual Channel-one Ultra160/LVD channel, Intel PRO/100+ Fast Ethernet Controller, ATI Rage* IIC SVGA) - without success.
It recognizes all devices but after I choose Solaris Interactive installation (from CD labeled Solaris 8 Software 1 of 2 Intel Platform Edition) it displays:
    Booting kernel/unix...
    SunOS Release 5.8 Version...
    then reboots after 2 seconds.
Since Intel STL2 board appears in the HCL for Solaris 8 I have struggled a while with the problem. I have not found neither post nor driver update information concerning this issue on the Solaris' related Web sites.
Finally, I found the very strange specification update info of STL2 board, published by Intel:
"13. Sun* Solaris* 8 installation issues
PROBLEM: Sun Solaris 8 cannot be installed on the STL2 server board with any BIOS version later than BIOS Release 1.1, Build 15. The system reboots during install and therefore the installation cannot be completed.
IMPLICATION: Installation of Sun Solaris 8 cannot be completed on an STL2 server board running any BIOS release later than BIOS Release 1.1, Build 15.
WORKAROUND: Sun Solaris* 8 will successfully install on the STL2 server board with BIOS Release 1.1, Build 15."
My BIOS release on the STL2 board is 1.7. It's too new to install Solaris 8 !?!
I am unable to get an old STL2 model with BIOS 1.1. Is there a way to update anything in the Solaris 8 in order to set it up on the new model of Intel STL2 server platform?
I would appreciate any help. Thanks.
    Matt

    The problem has been resolved.
I got the older BIOS 1.1 Build 15 for Intel STL2 from Intel Internet Support. After I installed BIOS 1.1 instead of BIOS 1.7 had no problem with installation of Solaris 8.

  • Unable to install Solaris 10 for intel on IDE hard disk?

I was trying to install solaris on an 80 GB IDE HDD with
AMD 32 bit ,XP2000 cpu, 1024 MB RAM using a DVD rom
drive with the first/second solaris os install CD.
BUT after 2nd CD , i got the message 'Short Read/Read Error'
after the GRUB boot loader screen.
Repeated after formatting disk using Red Hat linux (linux installed successfully on same disk/machine without problems) but even then
when i retried installing solaris 10, it failed with same error.
Same set of CDs installed successfully on intel xeon server with
1 GB RAM, 32 GB SCSI HDD.
Does solaris install on IDE hard disks on intel 32 bit PCs?

Sometimes it's possible to use drivers for older Solaris x86 systems
to install the latest Solaris x86 release.

To do that, you have to modify HP's ITU floppy. For Solaris 10 x86,
rename the DU/sol_2X directory on HP's floppy to DU/sol_210 .

  • Solaris 3/05 no longer boots after installing 113000-07

I can't get Solaris 10 3/05 to boot anymore after installing patch 113000-7. The patch was installed by Sun's update connection software.
The computer is a Dell Dimension XPS T600 with 512MB ram.
    I get the error:
Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory.

I'm not sure how to edit my replies so I'm just gonna make another reply. I assumed the following values:
    GPT 3 Start
    GPT 3 End
    GPT 3 Size
    NTFS Start
    NTFS Offset
    NTFS End
    NTFS Size
    293378384

    294649856
    1936
    490233855
    195584000
I followed the rest of the instructions given here. I made sure to enter the second number with a + sign. After doing all of that all these checks worked:
Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?
Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?
Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?
I've always been able to access my bootcamp files from finder and I can try to boot from System Preferences -> startup disk, from rEFIt and also from my macbooks startup manager that I access by holding down option while booting.
I'm starting to think I've misrepresented my problem and that I've been looking at the wrong threads. Every time I try to boot windows I get a black screen with the Windows logo and some text saying something like "starting automatic recovery" or something like that. It then takes me to a blue screen displaying an error number and telling me to use recovery tools on the installation media. Maybe this is different from the problems I've been looking at in other threads.
I've tried using the same USB I used to install bootcamp with but it doesn't give me the option of repairing the installation.
EDIT: So I figured out how to edit replies. Anyway I just tried to boot into Windows and checked. The black screen with the Windows logo says "Preparing Automatic Repair". The blue screen gives me the error 0xc00000e.

  • Unable to install Boot Camp 3.1 on Win 7 on iMac Intel (suggestions?)

I got the OEM version of Windows 7, professional and 64 bits, and installed it via Boot Camp Assistant. Got it running (no keyboard recognition), and tried to install Boot Camp for Win 7 via the Apple site:
"Unable to install 3.1, needs 3.0".
No problem, insert OSX disk (10.6.3), click, aaand:
"Boot Camp 64bit is not supported on this model"
Uh?,... I thought that my machine was supported (it's running Win7 64bits!),... any suggestions?. Am I doing something wrong?. Any help will be appreciated.

Unfortunately I cannot answer your question but I'm hoping someone can help us. I went a step further than you. I have an iMac 8.1 Intel Core 2Duo 2.8 GHZ Processor (early 2008). I spoke with Apple Customer Support and made it clear that I had Windows 32 bit and 64 bit software and wanted to install on my iMac and MBP. The agent told me to order Snow Leopard for the iMac. I found out tonight I cannot use 64 bit on this particular iMac even though Customer Support had the serial number and data when we ordered the Snow Leopard disc.
So, I partitioned the HD equally between Mac and Windows. Boot Camp installed Windows 7 with no problem and then encountered the same thing you did. Install Boot Camp 3.0 before 3.1. When I put the brand new Mac OS X Snow Leopard from Apple in the iMac it said 'not supported'. I tried to install but it won't.
Funnything is Win 7 seems to be running. I am having problems with the numeric keyboard on the UBS keyboard. I haven't really tried to do too much.
My question to append to yours is how do I go about uninstalling Windows 7 and installing Windows 7 32 bit?
I'm sick about this but at least I believe I can install the 64 bit on my current MBP. I wanted it on both my computers.

  • Fail to install solaris 8 for intel

hello. i downloaded three files and made a CD for each one. but during the installing on a Dell PowerEdge 6450
(4 x Pentium III 550)which has two AIC 7899 ultra160/m SCSI adapters and a Dell PERC RAID controller (i note they are not included in the hardware compatibility list of solaris 8 for
intel), the install process stopped when it was "I2O Nexus:
initializing IO processor 0" and didn't go any further. when i attempt to intall it on another machine(2 x PIII 1000) which has a AIC 7892 ultra160/m SCSI adapter, the process
stopped saying "no disks that meet the criteria in the solaris installer documentation found" after solaris web start began to run. before this, it has reported resource conflict of PNP0C01
and ISY0050. and the installing stopped when "using RPC bootparams for network configuration information" on a PIII 800 PC. what's wrong with my installing. is it due to the incompatibility of hardware or something else?how to resolve it if possible? help is in need very much.besides, what does
DCA mean?sorry, i'm a newbie in this field.
    thanks
    xoing

    Hi,
Problem with PERC RAID controller card.
You try to install the driver for AIC 7899 and Dell PERC RAID controller card. In dell computers, they have dell PERC RAID controller driver for Solaris 7 version. They don't have the driver for solaris 8 version.
You can download driver for SCSI AIC 7899 from this URL:
    http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?cat=/Product/ASC-39160&filekey=u160_slrs_v121_dd.img.Z
Then you check with your local dell support provider for PERC RAID controller driver for solaris 7 and solaris 8.
    Thanks.
    revert back.

  • Re: Installing Solaris 11.1 and multi-boot manager

    Hi,
I have several problems too (I'm newbie on solaris) installing Solaris in multiboot environment ( I have 3 hard disks on this pc)
Does the grub2 of solaris 11.1 boot linux or not ? if the grub2 of solaris 11.1 can boot linux I think I will install the grub2 of solaris in MBR, I have already triyed this with bootadm install-bootloader -M but there was already a grub2-pc of linux installed and it did'nt
delete the grub2 of linux, so I think I must use bootadm install-bootloader -fM to install the grub2 of solaris
if the grub2 of solaris 11.1 doesn't boot linux I will do as you said with the chainload of solaris (how can I chainload solaris in a recent grub2 ?
    in menu entry :
    insmod part_msdos
    insmod part_sunpc
    insmod part_gpt
    insmod zfs
    set root='(hd2,gpt1)'
    chainload +1
(this last point is not important because I have other ways to boot linux and Iprefer to install the grub2 of solaris)
I cannot retrieve my root pool when I boot from the text install CD ROM, zpool import -f rpool doesn't succeed, must I do something after an installation (is it possible to save the root pool on a big usb key ?),(I think I will post another thread for that...)
    thanks for your answers

I tried to install the grub2 of solaris after an installation but it doesn't delete the grub2-pc of linux, I think I should have use bootadm install-bootloader -fM to force the instalaltion in MBR

  • Boot problems - can I "Archive and Install" to back-up and then reformat?

    Hi all!
I'm having booting problems with my PowerBook 15".
I've ran the hardware/disk utility tests and everything seems fine. The problem is, I get a blue-screen with the spinning sun-dial or sthing. It keeps spinning and spinning! I tried going into safe-mode, but it doesn't work!
My question is, can I do an "Archive and Install"... load a fresh copy of OS X on my PowerBook so that I can back-up my data? Would this work?
    Please help, thanks!

I took the risk and managed to install Tiger over my previous OS successfully! Afterwards, I backed up everything as fast as I could, and then did a Clean Install. Worked like a charm! haha..
However... after doing the Clean Install, I realised that I am UNABLE to install "Windows Media Player for Mac OX X" on to my machine!?!?! I downloaded "WindowsMediaInstaller.bin", and opened it with StuffIt Expander. StuffIt Expander just hung at the "Preparing" mode and says "Preparing..."
Anyone else has/had the same problem? Please help, as a number of online radio sites require Windows Media Player to run, and now I can't access them!! =(
