Solaris 8 Compatibility woth AMD Procesor

I need to install Solalris 8 (Intel Platform Edition) on my PC that runs on AMD Athlon x86 900MHz Processor. I need some advice on compatibility of these two products. Please assist.

I had no problems at all to install Solaris 8 IA on
a box with AMD Athlon 650 MHz (Gigabyte board)
and one with Athlon 900 MHz (Asus board), only,
with the latter box, my IBM disk (40G) was only
recognized as 8GB, which obviously had nothing
to do with the processor. An installation attempt
on a K6-2/500 also seemed to work fine.

I've had the same problem when trying to install it, in my case the disklabel was created with parted and caused the problems. I've relabeld the disk by booting into single user mode from cdrom and executing these commands:

    # format

  • Can Solaris run on AMD Sempron

I am considering evaluating Solaris 10.
I have a new motherboard with an AMD Sempron CPU.
I currently run WinXP on a 30 GB hard drive, partitioned as two 15GB drives.
I need to re-install the operating system as I am replacing my current motherboard.
This will allow me to partition one 15 GB drive into two smaller drives, probabaly one 10 GB and one 5GB
Is it possible to configure this as a dual boot machine, one booting into Windows, and one booting into Solaris.
My concern with Solaris is how hard will it be to learn and configure Solaris, and how many programs that I currently run on Windows can run on Solaris.
I use sevral EDA programs on Windows, Schematic Capture, FPGA design programs, PCB layout.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Well I suppose it will run on AMD Sempron, I haven't tried, but since AMD Sempron is an i386 compatible CPU, It will have no problem...
About using windows programs on Solaris, you should use Wine to use the windows executables. Watch www.winehq.com.
About the ease of configuration of Solaris, it all depends on haw much time you want to dedicate to it. It's not as simple as configuring Windows XP but it doesn't give you so much headaches: things just work if you do the correct.

  • Solaris on Intel/apps for solaris compatibility

Does anyone know how to run apps available for Sun solaris (sparc verion) to run on Intel solaris? I tried to install sybase client s/w on Intel solaris and obviously it bombed. Is there any kind of emulators or anything that would make this work?
    Thanks

Well written code (e.g. avoiding hardware specifics, byte-order differences etc) is intended to be readily portable from Solaris on Intel to Solaris Sparc.
The Forte tools from Sun are recommended, and a Try&Buy version can be had from the Sun download center. Sun also provides the Gnu tools on the companion CD shipped with Solaris media kits or at sunfreeware.com

  • CS5 Compatibility with AMD E350 Processor

I just opened up my new computer and I realized it didnt have a CD Drive.  Later looking into the specs I failed to check if the CS5 Design Premium Suite will run on my AMD Fusion E350 Processor ( 1.60GHz 1MB ) APU.  Its an 11.6 inch netbook with a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.  3GB of RAM and plenty of Hard Drive Space.  But I am mainly asking if the AMD E350 Processor is enough to run the CS5 Suite (Mainly Photoshop) well.
PS.  If you know how to install photoshop cs5 without a built-in CD Drive any advice would be helpful.

Yes, it will run.  When I travel, I take a HP DM1Z-3000 along that is loaded with PSCS 5, Illustrator CS5, and LR 3.5.  That HP line uses the AMD E350 Fusion processor.  Is it as fast as my HP DM4 laptop with an I5 processor - no, but it will get the job done.  The bottleneck for you will be the RAM, not the processor.  It really is quite fast and very energy efficient.  My recommendation would be to up the RAM and you will have something that will work quite well.  I upgraded the RAM of both machines to 8 GB (quite cheap at this point), and even the little DM1Z can run circles around my 2 year old Core2Duo laptop that now sits on a shelf. For comparison, the old Core2Duo laptop also has 8 GB of RAM and it is simply not as responsive as the DM1Z....

  • LABVIEW compatibility with AMD processor

Can LABVIEW be loaded on an embedded PC having an AMD Geod LX800-500 MHz processor. Plz help
Message Edited by vipinsaklani on 12-05-2008 12:57 AM

If you can run a standard windows version (not CE)on your PC you may run labview on it. As I think the geode CPU is x86 compatible. But your CPU is to slow to use windows XP. You may consider using windows 2000 or windows 98, and perhaps labview 7.0 or 7.1. In any case your setup must have sufficient ram, HD, and CPU capacity for your project. If your computer runs windows CE 5.0 you may also use labview, but you need to buy a toolkit and transfer the aplication as an exe file to your host.
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted
(Sorry no Labview "brag list" so far)

  • CD-R/CD+R compatibility woth MacBook 120GB ?

OK, I've tried Tesco CD-R, spat it out and threw up errors. Today I tried Memorex CD-R, and it just spits the CD back out when I put it in, no error message! Memorex works with Acer Vista though.
    WHAT'S GOING ON?
    Help.

    Hi Stu.
Okay, I saw in your other post that you are going through Preferences to set up your burn. In 1,2,3 steps, what exactly are you doing and in what order?
I really do not think it's about the disks you are using. I've used Memorex and Verbatim and have never had any problems.
    1) Highlight your chosen playlist.
    2) Open iTunes from menu bar.
    3) Open Preferences
    4) Click Advanced.
    5) Click Burning
    6) Make sure you check 'Audio CD' option (and sound check, if you wish).
    7) Click 'Okay'.
    8) In bottom right of iTunes window click on 'Burn' and WAIT for the 'insert a disc' prompt.
    9) Insert your disc.
If following these steps is still getting your disc spit out then I don't know.
Do you having something else in there? Stuck or forgotten? Have you tried cleaning it?
If none of this stuff applies, maybe it's time to call AppleCare if you have it, or take it to the store for a look see.

  • Solaris 10 AMD Athlon Opteron BIOS microcode patch

I've recently installed Solaris 10 on AMD Opteron machine, AMD64
On boot, I receive a message "BIOS microcode patch not found...erratum 109" or something to that effect.
this is followed by a bunch of "not enough space" comments.
I've tried to find such a patch without success. Clearly, this points out my lack of knowledge. Perhaps someone can provide advice? AMD said "call Sun"

I went back and did a reinstall of OS. I then downloaded and installed all the patches associated with the machine W1100Z. This has made this operational but issues remain. I decided to download the latest supplement.iso (2.5) and install the newer BIOS. The supplement.iso size is 427.89 MB. Unfortunately, at 427.11 MB I receive an error "not enough memory in the folder". I get the same result regardless of the target directory. I do suspect the installing the new boot image will work but the problem of how to get in on the machine remains.
I apologize for the delayed response but I only have so much time. I have considered the purchase of a new machine would be a good choice, with OS already installed, but this one is autographed by James Goslin. An operating machine certainly would be a great SUN advertisement in my office. Plus, the tanking markets have significantly reduced my upgrade capability.
You are probably correct though. Finding the disks may be a problem especially cdrom.
    cd c:\cdrom
    ls -l
    doesn't list anything

  • Solaris 10 Development - SPARC vs AMD

    Hello Everyone,
We currently develop software for Solaris 9 and Solaris 10 for SPARC. We now need to make our software available for Solaris 10 on AMD.
What are the basic requirements for this? Do we need an AMD system running Solaris 10? Can we still compile on SPARC and it will work on an AMD system?
    Thanks.

It would be easier to just setup an AMD box and compile on it directly. Having said that you can setup a cross compiler and have it compile for multiple operating systems.

  • After AMD X2 3800 upgrade MSI Radio causes stop error

    Hi!
First of all sorry for by bad English
I have an MSI TV Anywhere master card for about two years now.
Until now it was running fine, using the updated drivers from MSI's site
This include the main driver, and the new WinDVR 3.0 and the updated MSI Radio
With these AMD vs Intel price wars, I've upgraded my Athlon Winchester 3000+ to a X2 3800+
    The CPU is running fine
However, MSI radio immedialy gives a BSOD since I have changed the CPU
I have even got as far as reinstalling XP SP2 from scratch, and it still BSOD's :(
    I get
    STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
    How do I solve it?
Any other users having trouble with TV Anwhere Master with an AMD X2
CPU has run for several hours PRIME 95 and some heavy games with no crashes whatsoever
Just click on MSI radio and the mouse cursor wil freeze, followed by a BSOD and a reboot
    Every time this happend
The only time when I could lauch MSI radio was when I booted Windows XP in safe mode
    Thx in advance

    Hi Stu!
Followed you advice, I looked a little more at the processor AMD procesor driver program
I already had installed the latest version, but it crashed too :(
However you suggestion had led my to try this:
    * Removed the normal AMD processor driver
    * Installed the AMD Fix for dual core processors from the AMD site
It worked!! Now MSI radio no more crashes!
    knock on wood
I'll report back when there are errors
This is the page I got the utility from:
    http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html
    It's the first tool listed
    From the desc:
"The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction"
Hope this helps anyone who has an AMD X2 an has similar problems
Actually, with the new drivers from MSI I'm quite happy with my TV Anywhere Master
    Greetings & thanks everyone

  • Solaris 10 x86 cdrw trouble.  Gnome and command line problems writing.

I'm experiencing general weirdness trying to write CD's and DVD's using a new internal DVD-RW device -- It's a Sony NEC AD 7220 A CD / DVD RW drive on a Solaris 10 x86 AMD system. I have searched far and wide for other threads of similar instances but no one has posted an issue like the one I'm having.
    I have a Sony Optiarc AD 7220 A CD-RW on a x86 AMD Athalon 1.6 ghz based server with 2 GB RAM.
The DVD-RW drive gets detected by BIOS (Phoenix TrustedCore 2.3) and reads disks fine. I installed Solaris 10.08 from DVD using this DVD-RW drive.
However, trying to write to new blank media does not work properly, (effectively at all).
I've tried different brands of brands of blank CD's and CD-R and CD+R (have not tried using CD-RW disks yet). Ditto with DVD's - tried DVD-R and DVD+R's.
    1. Inside the Solaris 10 GUI (Gnome, a.k.a. Java Desktop), when I put in a blank CD-R, a dialog box "Format Media...?" pops up. If I click "Ok" it formats the blank CD and closes the session, CD has been written to and is ruined.
    2. I open a terminal window, as root, and put in a blank CD. "mkisofs –r /home/foo 2>/dev/null | cdrw –i –p 1" will write a directory tree OK, but if I go back into gnome GUI and open and close the CD tray, again, up pops the "Format Media..." dialog box instead of the CD appearing on the desktop. If I restart vold (svcadm restart volfs) then open and close the CD tray, voila, the contents appear on desktop as CD icon.
    3. When I try to write to a DVD-R: "cdrw -i /local/iso_image" It always fails with: Write Track 1....Failed. after a few minutes. It did in fact write part of the .iso but bails out with a failure.
I've tried various other write commands (specifying the device ID, speed, so on and so forth) and command line switch options (following the rules of course) and it seems to me to be more than a syntax / media issue. However if it is I would like to know. I did see a similar CDRW device on the HCL for OpenSolaris with a 'reported to work' rating. That was for a Optiarc AD-5200A, which is going away thus my company has chosen to use the AD 7220A in speciality racks we build and deliver to the U.S. Navy.
I really need to get a handle on this CD-RW device issue and decide if a different brand / model is what it's going to take to solve this and move on to producing and delivering these systems in working conditions.

Sony systems are often very particular about what CD's and DVD's they'll take. I have several Sony systems that I use for video work and they'll read almost anything but they'll only write to DVD RW.  They also don't like cheap brand CD's and DVD's.  Be sure to try both CD RW and DVD RW before doing anything else.  Because of the requirement for DVD RW, they won't take fast speed (16x) DVD's, just 4x. If all of this turns out to be the case, you may want to go with a different manufacturer for the drive, DVD +RW 4x aren't always easy to find in the store.

  • Solaris 10 virtual machine for VMware

I've tried the "Solaris 10 OS, AMD x64 Platform - Solaris Enterprise System Virtual Machine for VMware (Solaris 10 11/06) 3.0". I've d/l the virtual appliance for vmware one can find from there : http://developers.sun.com/solaris/downloads/solaris_apps/index.jsp#vmware
    I encountered 2 problems :
The first was the network (netcard) wasn't recognised at all. It's strange because the settings should be the same for every vmware virtual machines. It may be because I'm running the latest version from vmware (10.0.2). The default option was NAT, and I tried the others as well. All other systems I'm using with vmware are working correctly, including the opensolaris "Nexenta".
The second one was with the screen resolution, it was excessively huge, around 2800 x 2000. I couldn't change it in the gnome desktop (the option had no effect). I managed to change it by altering the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. The same was for the keyboard settings, I couldn't switch to azerty (french) keyboard. I had to change it in xorg.conf file.

im new to vmware too, but just wan to share my experience with you.
5.5.1 vmware workstation with vmtool installed.
    - my NIC still define as pcn0, encountered packet drop network issue
    - dtlogin doesn't work properly with my screen resulation, mouse work fine without pressing ctrl+alt key to get out from vmware
6.0 vmware workstation with vmtool installed.
    - no more packet drop issue, especially when i ssh from pc to vmware.
    - gdm fit to screen, GUI work fine.
    - my shared folder working now, mount as /hgfs.
