Solaris 8 DLPI issues

Is anyone aware of any DLPI issues specific to Solaris 8(Beta Refresh 2). In this case,"ifconfig x0 plumb" fails for a pseudo driver in Solaris 8, while the same works fine in Solaris 7. This is a style 2 DLS provider, and it appears that DL_INFO_REQ fails, leading to ifconfig coming out with an error "No such interface".

My company is porting a network traffic-monitoring application to Solaris. We would like to use the Solaris "DLPI" interface to receive packets for analysis. However, my understanding is that DLPI will only provide incoming packets addressed to the local machine. In order to receive outgoing packets also, I understand that DLPI requires that the application place the network interface in promiscuous mode, which we are loathe to do for efficiency reasons. I am hoping that I'm incorrect about this; is there a way in Solaris 7 or 8 to use the DLPI interface to receive both incoming packets addressed to the local machine and also outgoing packets from the local machine? Thank you.

  • Solaris 10 issue with CD 2

I am installing solaris 10 on some old SunBlade 100
All is working fine with the first CD then I reach a point where I am asked to insert a the second CD. I put it in and is not recognized but I can mount it in my linux box.
Same for all the other CD.
The only way I can proceed with the installation is.
reboot with the next cd inserted than it works...
I am not to expert with solaris maybe I am missing something stupid...
    Thank you!

Here is updated information on this 2GB/855GME issue. Any assistance, solution, or insight is very much appreciated.
We are seeing orders of magnitude (30x) increase in access time in a segment at the top of memory when the memory installed is 2 Gigabytes and booting the Solaris operating system. This segment starts at 0x3E000000 (physical - 32 megabytes from the top) up to the 8 Megabytes 'stolen' by the video (or 24 megabytes). The huge increase in Solaris boot time is because (according to our Sun technical contact) Solaris allocates memory from the top down which means its using the slow memory to boot. The symptoms change if the Internal Graphics Device (IGD) is disabled and a PCI video card is used, OR, if the IGD is set to 'steal' all 32 Megabytes available thus consuming the 'slow memory' area.
We have opened an Intel Quad issue outlining the symptoms above (see Quad text below). They suspect MTRR setup in 'anticipation' of IGD use of the memory. However, dumps of the MTRR's via emulator both with and without the IGD are the same.
Note: other model specific registers, such as the BBL_CR_Dx registers are different with/without IGD, but as they are for accessing L2 cache, don't appear to be pertinent to this problem. This opinion could change with more study.

  • 11gR2 install on Solaris 10 Issue

I am trying to install the 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure on Solaris 10 2 node cluster. I have taken care of all the pre reqs, ssh equivalence works well,, i am installing the binaries on a ZFS mounted file system and using ASM for datafiles. The installation runs fine on node 1 and continues until 65% where it hangs saying: "Copying files to node 2"
    Has anyone seen this issue?

  • Dns server in solaris 10 issues

    Hello,
I have configured /etc/resolv.conf with the following:
    nameserver 8.8.8.8
"nslookup www.yahoo.com" works fine to get the IP, but "ping www.yahoo.com" failed with with unknown host.
Did I miss something to configure my dns server?
Thanks for the help in advance.
    Tom

You haven't configured a DNS server. You've told nslookup which DNS server to use to resolve a name to an address.
    Try:
    http://www.convery.me.uk/blog/?p=16
    for assistance with your issue.
Don't forget that Solaris 10 uses both hosts and ipndoes. Later versions have these files linked together.

  • Solaris 10 issue with Memory 1GB on Intel 855GME

With 2GB memory installed on an Intel 855GME based Single Board Computer, we are experiencing extremely slow boots and installs with Solaris 10 (03/05). The boards boot on the order of 25-35 minutes. They are slow during the "configuring devices" phase. After the systems boot they seem fine. An install of Solaris 10 disk 1 takes approximately 2 1/2 hours with 2GB memory installed.
We have tested with 512 MB or 1GB SODIMMs installed and have no issues on several boards. We are trying to integrate the 2GB memory parts. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

  • SAP NW CE 7.2 Distributed Install on Solaris/Oracle Issues

    Hi,
has anyone used the current Installation DVD (51038030) to install a distributed CE 7.2 system. SAPInst fails to install the SCS instance and doesn't unpack the kernel etc as part of the process. The CE 7.1 DVD for Solaris/Oracle installs ok after I downloaded the new control xml which was atached to OSS 1249364. I've got a high priority message open with SAP on the problems with the CE 7.2 installation but thought I'd see if anyone else has encountered any issues with the 7.2 Solaris/Oracle installation.
    Regards,

    Hi;
In my sysstem i discoverer automounting is on.Automounting keeps track on /home by default. If you want to manually controll this dir, then you need to disable automountd or comment out any line in /etc/auto_home and /etc/auto_master. After comment out everything you can reboot the system to be sure that automountd has no control over /home.
Thatwhy i create direcotry user under / and give it 777 then issue:
    useradd -g dba -d /user/applvis applvis
    useradd -g dba -d /user/oravis oravis
    when i switch user as
    root@test # su - applvis
    $
    it switched user
I hope this will help other ppl who need it!

  • Solaris install issues on U-AXi 501-4559 main board

I have a U-AXi Raptor 501-4559 mainboard with UltraSparc IIi processor. SCSI hard drive and CD. One floppy drive that is not SCSI. The video card is TechSource Raptor GFX. My issue is that I have had it for 5 years and had the 'limited updates' from the original Solaris 10 software install. When Oracle bought Sun, my updates stopped. I have been unable to find a way to continue the updates without buying the very expensive packages they offer for big business. This is a 'home server' that I bought mostly for learning purposes and don't want to spend a LOT of money on it. I thought I might just download and install the latest version of Sol 10 and see if they had another 'limited updates' option in it since it contains some linux software (OpenSolaris). I assume the new Sol 10 DVD is the open version. It's free. Anyway, it is on DVD. My system only has a cd and I can't find any options for downloading that DVD in cd format. I don't have a 'jumpstart' server and don't want to spend the money buying another computer to set up as jumpstart server. Anyone have any suggestions how to obtain CDs of the latest Sol 10 for sparc? I don't have a way to connect a computer to the serial port to do it that way. I do have a linux computer on an internal lan that could be accessed by setting the address in nvram on the sparc if someone knows of a document on how to do it that way.
Thanks for any help you may offer.

Thanks for all the help. I found your IRC channels to be as helpful as this forum. I had no other recourse than to install Debian.

  • Hyperion Essbase on Solaris & Security issue in Shared services

I installed Hyperion system 9.3.1 in my dev environment. Every thing is working properlly.
But i still have questions on couple of things.
    1) I installed essbase on solaris 10. I was just trying to configure the sql interface for ESSBASE.
I went through the documentation. It says i supposed to get a file called libesssql.so.1
But i can't able to see this file in ARBORPATH/bin location. But still I could able to load the data
into sample Essbase application. My essbase is working fine. when i ran the script inst -sql.sh
it created a file called libesssql.so in the ARBORPATH/bin location. But no libesssql.so.1.
Can some one help me regarding this................
2)In the shared services when i clicked under Hyperion system 9 BI+, i cant able to see
any reporting related files to assign security. i am seeing a message saying refer to the security guide to confiure
    permissions for this application.
I logged into the shared services with admin privileges.
    Please help me in this...........
    Thanks,

    Hi,
What version are you using ?
Just to be clear are you saying that the utility only exported one native user and you expected it to export more ?

  • Oracle RAC on Solarais Configuration Issue

    Hi,
We are trying to install Oracle RAC 10g R2 on Solaris 10.
    Following are the products
    1=> Soalris 10 OS
    2=> Sun Cluster 3.1
    3=> Veritas Volume Manager
    4=> Veritas Cluster File System
Can i deploy Oracle RAC using the above listed Software.
Here we have not purchase any of the Cluster Volume Manager.
Is the CVM required to install Oracle RAC.
Is there any alternative wherein we can install Oracle RAC without using CVM like for example using the RAW device where the VM will manage storage from a single node rather than buying the CVM that will allow to manage the storage from multiple nodes.
Also i would like to highlight is suggestion for using ASM is rule out hence ASM would not be used.
Can anyone suggest me some solution to the above problem.

Well, my impression is that you don't really know what your requirements are and you are trying to fit the technologies somehow. Worse yet, there is no clear understanding how those technologies fit together and as long as you explain what your vendor is saying you (which vendor?) they don't have clear idea either.
I would also suggest to review your decision to use Sun Network Data Replicator for DR site. Consider Oracle Physical Standby database instead - it's more flexible solution and doesn't limit your choice of storage stack.
    1) Do Oracle RAC 10gR2 requires any Veritas Cluster Volume Manager
Words "any" and "Veritas" contradict in your question. But the answer is no. RAC require shared storage which can generally be one of those:
    - raw devices with or without some kind of cluster volume manager
    - cluster file system
    - NAS storage (NFS mounted)
    - ASM with raw devices for CRS files (OCR and voting disks)
    2) Does Oracle RAC 10g R2 require any Vertias Cluster File System or it can sit on normal Vertias File System
Again, Oracle database files MUST reside on shared storage and non-clustered file system is not an option.
    3) Is there any solution where we can use the Sun Cluster with Veritas Componets to configure RAC.
If I recall correctly, Sun Cluster includes in it's license some of component of Veritas storage stack. So you might be all set. You should turn to documentation on that stage and see exactly what you have licensed and if your stack allows shared storage. You might want to have a look at http://www.sun.com/software/whitepapers/solaris10/solaris_cluster.pdf
and Oracle Certification Matrix on Metalink.

  • Solaris 9 issue with pthread_cond_timedwait() and rdate

The following program produces bizarre behavior. Basically, it is a two threaded program. Thread 1, after setting everything up, simply waits (for a long time) on a condition variable via pthread_cond_timedwait(). The second thread simply forks off a command at the users behest. The problem is that once an rdate has been exec'd, the next time this program forks, the pthread_cond_timedwait() returns ETIMEDOUT, even though it is nowhere near the timeout time (in this example, one day). It's important to realize that the rdate does not actually have to be exec'd via this program. If this program is running and you open another window and do an "rdate <some system>", the pthread_cond_timedwait() will still return ETIMEDOUT the next this program forks a process. Also, just to stem off the obvious question, the system to which rdate is pointed (in my environment) has the exact same time as the system running this program, so there is no effective time/date change on this system.
I just did one other quick test, the same behavior is observed if do a regular "date" that sets the date, instead of just interrogating the date. Again, even if the date is set to the current date/time, the problem occurs.
Finally, I should point out that this only happens on Solaris 9. I have been unable to reproduce it on Solaris 8 or Solaris 2.6. I don't have a Solaris 7 system to try. The problem is not recreatable on Linux or AIX (or at least not the several different levels of each that I have). The program was created using GCC V2.95.3.
I'm assuming that this is some kind of bug in Solaris 9. Any thoughts?
Sorry for what looks like a lack of indentation. I'm not sure how to tell the forum to keep my indentation.

Probably the simplest way to use threads on Solaris is to use pthreads -- it's a portable thread interface that is the same on nearly all operating systems.
To use pthreads in C or C++ using Sun compilers, include <pthread.h> in your code, add the option -mt to every command line, and add -lpthread to each link command.
The full power of Solaris threads is not available via the pthread interface, but pthread is often all you need.
For more information, consult the C++ Users Guide, the Solaris man pages related to threads and pthreads.
Books on the topic are also available. ACCU has an extensive list of reviewed books. Here is a review of a book about pthreads:

  • Solaris 10 issue on ultra 5

After a full installation of Solaris 10, dtlogin will not start up after wat it seems a couple of retries to find a
correct video mode. During the installation process X started up just fine so it is not a hardware problem.
I will look into this problem but would appreciate if someone can shed some light on this.
    Regards

I made an installation with the lasst beta of solaris 10 on a blade 1000 wich worked fine with solaris 8 and 9, then after installing the beta X didn`t start.
I passed the machine to a customer of mine who urgently needed a Sun and he reported they were not able to start X. I think they donwgraded to Solaris 9 to work
Then I used days later the final release of Solaris 10 on a Ultra 60 with Elite3d. Same problem, correct installation using the graphic enviroment, but at restart X didn`t started. I even formatted and reinstalled ... nothing
I always had X works at the first try on different hardware (from sparc 5 to Blade 1000) using from solaris 6 to solaris 9.
    Now X really doesn`t work...
Some one can offer a suggestion on how to fix this?
Should not X correctly run without any trick on standard Sun hardware when the installation was succesfull?
Which additional setting are necessary to let X works under Solaris 10 on standard Sun hardware?
    Thank you.

  • Report Server on Solaris  - Printing Issues

    Hi
I was able to generate reports directly from the Report Server
running on Windows NT. The print outs were generated in HP
Printers. Will there be any problems if the Reports Server is
    installed in Solaris.
The clients are in NT. When we invoke the URL along with the
printer name, the print out is directly generated. For this ,
does the printout is directed from server or teh client?
    Any help would be appreciated
    Ravi

    hello,
the behavior is the same on NT and on solaris. except, that on
UNIX the printer-names are -of course- different. so you have to
use different set of URLs for UNIX and NT.

When I try to install the repository on JCAPS 5.1.3 on Solaris (SPARC), I get a class not found error (from install.sh).
On doing an ls -l on the DVD, I notice that all jar files in the lib/ folder have changed the names
