Solaris 8 install on 1 GB Drive

Is it possible to do a Solaris 8 Installation on a 1 Gigabyte Hard Drive. Possibly a Minimum install? The Installation instuctions require more space, but I could not find any information re: a smaller installation. Any help would be most appreciated.
Thank you.

Well, I think you should be able to perform a Core Installation, which takes about 300 to 400 MB

  • Solaris 10 Install problem with SATA drives

Hi, I'm trying to install solaris 10 on a x86 system with 2 SATA drives running in a on board SATA controler (not RAID).
During install the setup fails to detect the disks, to install Windows XP I have to provide disk drivers during the setup procedure by pressing F6 and providing the drivers, alas I cannot seem to find either a way to provide SATA controler drivers to solaris, nor a suitable driver for solaris .
Any help would be extremely apreciated.

I had the same SATA problem on builds 69 and 72 of Solaris10, but the Release version recognises and installs readily on SATA drives on three mainboards that I use. They are Tyan s2875 with dual opteron cpus, Asus k8N-E with a 754 pin athlon64 cpu, and Gigabyte GA-K8NS-939 with a939 pin athlon64.
My Mandrake Linux10 says it sees the SATA drives, but never installed on them.
FreeBSD 5.3 Release for AMD64 sees the SATA and installs with no problems.
Hope this gives you some encouragement to persist

  • How do I add an undetected Intel 82559 NIC to my Sparc Solaris 9 install?

    All,
I bought a combo LSI SCSI and Intel NIC card for my Ultra 5. I'm running Solaris 9 9/04. The card was added after the os was installed. The OS is currently using the hme0 adapter detected on the system but I need to multi-home this system.
first I did a "touch /reconfigure" and a "boot -r" when that failed. Then I checked the net and found the driver ought to be iprb. according to the manpage for iprb, there should be a /kernel/drv/iprb entry but there is none on my system. I tried to `devfsadm -i iprb` anyhow but I got a "failed to attach" although that's the right driver. I suspect that some magic is needed in /etc/devlink.tab
So The card is not detected but prtconf seems to see it as an network device. I'm at a loss on how to proceed to get the nic recognized. The scsi is working just fine. Here is what I know:

    All,
I've found the problem. It seems that Solaris 9 does not ship a driver for this. Anyhow, I found a GPL driver at:
    http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/
Use the "tu" driver. Although the chip is clearly marked as an Intel 82559 it responds to the tu (DEC Chip 211x) and not the Intel ife driver.
So that others can find this solution, I have added these keywords:
    lsi IntraServer ITI-6110U2-X
    Ebay combo Ultra2 SCSI NIC
LSI/Sun Dual Ultra2-LVD/SE SCSI Ethernet Combo PCI Card

  • Solaris 8 Installed, but won't run

Im pretty new to UNIX environments, so any advice or help in regard to the problem Im having with Solaris 8 on my Compaq Presario would be much appreciated. It's a 1G Athlon with 128M of memory.
Ive installed the software, though throughout the installation I was only able to get monochrome screens after I got through the monitor/graphics adapter configuration. I have an old 14 inch SVGA 1024x768 monitor (frequency unknown) so I chose the multifrequency monitor at that resolution (interlaced) at a 14 inch screen size and the VGA 16 color graphics adapter, because my Nvidia TNT graphics card isnt supported in the install program. I was then able to see a serviceable display test screen, though the colors were not accurate in every oval.
The installation went smoothly after that, though as I say it was in monochrome without any depth in the graphics.
I can now start Solaris, which proceeds through the Open Desktop Environment 1.4 screen, then freeezes at the screen with the multiple Solaris logos. This is all in monochrome by the way. No color appears. At this point the curser is a fat X (it does move when I move the mouse).
Would I be correct that the problem is likely to be the need for a driver to support the Nvidia card? I found the Sun archive with the correct driver, but all the installation instructions seem to assume that Solaris is running and that I can get to a shell prompt, which if I can do that I dont know how. Is there a boot option I need to use in order to get to a default shell?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Paul Berk

Try to boot into single user mode. At the following prompt...
    <pre>
    Boot path: /pci@0,0/pci-ide@7,1/ide@0/cmdk@0,0:a
    Boot args:
    Type b [file-name] [boot-flags] <ENTER> to boot with options
or i <ENTER> to enter boot interpreter
or <ENTER> to boot with defaults
    <<< timeout in 5 seconds >>>
    Select (b)oot or (i)nterpreter:
    </pre>
... type <b><code>b -s</code></b>. Once you're in single user mode, install the latest video driver patch (109401-06). After the patch
    is installed, re-run
<code>kdmconfig</code> to configure the video card.

  • Problems making Solaris 10 install disk for x86

The system just doesn't recognize it at all, like there is nothing in the DVD drive.
    What am I doing wrong?
The DVD drive does recognize other DVDs, just not the Solaris 10 install one (I created two install disks to no avail)

How are you burning the DVD. What software/options.

  • Solaris 8 x86 w/ Seagate 410800N Drive - Size Detection Problem

    I have a Dual PII-300Mhz computer w/ 786MB memory and a 4.5GB Wide Scsi (Seagate) and an 8.1GB Narrow Scsi (Seagate - 410800N) configuration.
I have installed Solaris 8 x86 and applied the "recommended patches". The system is working great EXCEPT for when I attempt to format the ST410800N hard drive.
The # of cylinders is suppose to be 4925, heads 27, sectors per track 133, etc...
Solaris is detecting only ~467 cylinders and 26 heads. I've tried to change the "TYPE" to one that I created and it seems to work for a few menu selections, but then when I try to partition the drive, it shows only ~467-470 cylinders. It shows 9 slices and only allows me modify up to #7. The SCSI ID for the drive is 4, which I'm not sure if this is something that Solaris is reserving for a Tape drive. I can change it to 1 or 2.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am new to using Solaris, but I'm enjoying it alot. I just would like to get this drive partitioned so that I can move "home" and to install Oracle 8.x
    Thanks,
    George

Thanks for all of the helpful responses. I figured out the problem.

  • Removing a corrupt partition that Solaris 8 Install will not do

What utility or software will remove a corrupt partition of a previous Solaris install.

I also had that exact same issue on a "HP Presario 2.2Ghz Celeron with 1Ghz ram".
It hangs on the blinking cursor. I am a techie, so I downloaded and burned more dvds in different ways. They all respond the same in that computer (so it shouldn't be a media problem), HOWEVER, on ONE machine (P3 1.0ghz 512MB 60GB) I have gotten the installation to proceed all the way to...
    [solaris install console text reads]
    Checking rules.ok file...
    Using begin script: install_begin
    Using finish script: patch_finish
    Executing SolStart preinstall phase...
    Executing begin script "install_begin"...
    Begin script install_begin execution completed.
    Starting Solaris Installation...
    [end]
It is past the partition creation point, and should be installing the software.
I installed a fresh hard drive in to do some playing, and it did not create any partition information even though it is past that point.
I think it may be a problem with the x86 installation program set. But I have no SPARC hardware in which to test.
I would love to evaluate sol10 if anybody can find a workaround.
    Please advise :-)

  • Help, unable to boot clean Solaris 10 install

I use Solaris at work, but have never done any sysadmin.
I have installed Solaris 10 on a new Intel Core2 Duo machine at home, but when I select Solaris 10 (not failsafe) from GRUB2, my machine reboots right after the "Use is subject to license terms", and goes back to GRUB2.
I can boot to the failsafe prompt, but I don't know how to troubleshoot from there.
What I've been able to find online suggests that I turn off ACPI (tried with no luck) and disable USB legacy mode in bios (again, tried with no luck). I'm using an IDE DVD drive to install, and a SATA drive for the OS, so everything is installed on c1d0, not c0d0.
When I run failsafe, it finds Solaris 10 ... X86 on c1d0s0 and I can attach as read/write, but I'm not sure what to do from there to find out why GRUB can't load the OS.
I've tried the Solaris 0606 Test Check CD, which says there are drivers for my complete system except for the audio (no driver) and the network (third party, I haven't bothered to get yet).
    Please help, I'm totally stuck!
    Thanks in advance,
    Brett

    enemix-
Sorry, I meant to say GRUB stage 2, not GRUB 2. I'm using the GRUB that came with solaris 0606. GRUB works fine.
    mAbrante -
Tried the halt_on_panic=1, had no effect. I'm really not sure what is causing the problem. I've found that if I boot 32 bit mode by editing the GRUB command to append kernel/unix I can boot into solaris. But I'd sure like to be able to boot into 64 bit mode.
    Any more thoughts anyone?

  • Please, solaris 10 installed in my X86 computer, but do not recognize NIC

Even I get a sun NIC, I do not know hot to install driver. So I am wondering, if I install a Sun PCI NIC, does the
solaris 10 recognize the sun PCI NIC automatically? If solaris can install NIC driver by itself, I will not install NIC driver, thanks

A number of drivers for supported cards were installed by default.
Solaris will not take any additional action when you add hardware. Either you've already got the driver and it'll be recognized, or you don't. If you don't have the driver, there might be a third-party driver available that you can download and install.
Best course of action is to add devices that are on the hardware compatibility list.

  • Solaris on MacBook... Driver???

Hi all guys. I am new with Solaris... and sure I have some problems!!!
I just installed Solaris on my MacBook. More precisely on an external usb hard-drive!
    The installation run well...
...but, after the reboot I realized the Solaris didn't recognize neither my ethernet card,
nor my airport, nor my graphic!!!
I repeat, I am good on os x and linux... but this is my first solaris installation...
    ...can someone help me!!!
    Thanks
    Adriano

It is not so simple... the tutorial on-line are unusefull because one is not real and the ather one is just a partition!!! My solaris is installed and running, natively (so any parallels or vmware) I only need to optimize it...
...just some times! I don't have so much free times!!!
How ever it seems there're progresses: yesterday I foiund the Marvell Yukon driver for the NIC... now I have to install them...
...only if my solaris machine is capable to reboot, because magically yesterday night it decided not to boot at all and to reboot each time!!! I don't still know why... I will see!

I bought an HP Pavilion 500 - 319na desktop in summer and want to install a 2nd hard drive. There are spare connections on the board and the power cable to the internal hard drive has a spare connection. From what I read it needs to be SATA 3. I have read conflicting advice on this board.  Some say yes, some say no.
OK, there seems to be only one bay (a poor oversight by HP) but provided I find a way of securing another drive is there any reason why it should not work.
From what I read it should be max 2Tb's.
I want a definitive answer please!
    Win 8.1 64 bit.
This is the hard drive I plan to buy.  The spec says XP, Vista, Win 7, but am I right in thinking it should work with win 8.1

As I said to you in the other cross posting (desktop hardware):
You can obtain 3.5" hard drive cage from here for $11 shipped.  Granted it has a 120mm fan and space for 4 drives, but for the price, you can mod/cut all you want.
Now your other issue/question:  You will want a SataIII 6GB/sec drive 2TB, 7200 RPM.

I am installing i Cloud on a Windows 7  but do not have an option of putting it any where but C drive. How can i install it to another drive? I keeep my operating system on a small partition and install all my programs to a larger partition.

Install it normally, launch it with the Shift key held down, and create a new library on the desired drive. The iTunes application contains system components and therefore must be installed on the drive or partition containing the OS.

  • I had to install a new hard drive because my old hard drives boot files became corrupted, and i want to get all of my music files off the old hard drive and regain all my play counts/ratings/playlists

    Greetings everyone
as the title says, ive had to install a new hard drive  and i want to transfer my old itunes library onto the new drive, maintaining all playlists/play counts/ratings etc, album artwork if possible. The old hard drive is installed as a slave drive and is completely acessible, but due to the boot files being corrupted i cannot use it as the main drive and therefore operate my old itunes. Also, my ipod no longer contains my music library as itunes synced without my permission and wiped it.
The only thing i have tried is copying all of my old music files from the old drive by selecting 'add folder to library' and then the old drive, then replacing the new itunes library.itl file with the one from my old itunes. This restores all my playlists and playcounts but when i try to play any of the songs it says that the files could not be found, and i dont fancy locating  8500 music files individually!
Thankyou for taking the time to read my post, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ah, my reply was based on the assumption that you had a default installation of iTunes.
i.e you had all your music in the iTunes media folder inside your iTunes folder.
If your iTunes folder is so small compared to the amount of music you have, you must have a different arrangement.
    This complicates you situation considerably.
iTunes can cope with moving around as long as all the music is in the iTunes media folder, not not if it isn't.
Your first step should be to get iTunes working on the old drive. This will involve editing the xml library file so that the drive letter is correct and then rebuilding the library from the xml file.
Then you will need to consolidate your library which moves everything into the iTunes media fodler. After that you will be able to use my first suggestion.
    Step 1
Find the iTunes folder on the old drive and copy the two library files somewhere else so you can find them again. That's iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml.
Now open the copy of iTunes Library.xml with WordPad.
    Look for lines starting:
    Location
These contain the paths to tracks.
You will need to use a find/replace to change the drive letter so that it is correct.
Make sure that you include enough in the "find" so that you only change the right thing.
Maybe /c:/ and replace with /d:/ or whatever.
After that, tell iTunes to use the library on the old drive with a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the old drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
    Then use the method in the following article to rebuild your library;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
Unfortunately the date added will be today for all tracks.
If iTunes works correctly after this, consolidate your library
    File>>Library>>Organize>>consolidate
This copies all tracks into to iTunes media folder and could create a problem if you do not have disk space so don't do it if you are unsure about free disk space.
Check that iTunes works OK and then use the first method.
